  • Have you tried growing your Sweet Peas in the Cold? I listen to different flower farming podcasts and just recently a couple of flower farmers were talking about how to get great Sweet Peas. Letting them get started in the cold instead of in a warm house was the ticket.

    New sub here. I've been gardening for decades but this is the first year of planting Sweet Peas. I appreciate your no-nonsense approach as I'm the same way and I'm thrilled to hear I can simply sow Sweet Pea seed outdoors. That fits me perfectly. Thank you!

      My best success has been direct sowing. Some years I get away with doing it in Fall and others Spring works better. It depends on how our winter goes.i wish you success.

    I love sweet peas, my favorite way is to plant them directly into ground outside. Sometimes I will sprout them using damp paper towel and ziplock bag method, but that is absolutely unnecessary. Thank you so much for sharing!! Love your videos 😀 You explain everything in plain language!

      I love direct sowing too. But lately, the gophers have been eating the seeds! Grrrr. I am going to start some in my pots with the bamboo, I love how they just climb up through the canes and it makes it look like the bamboo is blooming.

      @@FlowerPatchFarmhouse That's a great idea!! But gophers need to go away 😉

    For YEARS I've struggled with sweet pea. I've been following the directions on the package and it says April/may so I plant April/May. I'm behind the 8 ball here but I started a lot earlier for once. Thanks for sharing this info!

      Yes, it really depends on where you are and your growing conditions. When I lived in the San Joaquin Valley (zone9b), I planted sweet pea seeds in the Fall. That was perfect timing for there.

    I’m growing sweet peas for the first time this year. Didn’t know about pinching them back so I will get that done soon. Looking forward to the blooms.

    Thank you so much. I was really sad with all the info out there about starting them early but thankful to know I can no fuss sow outdoor. Plz continue to share your knowledge, much appreciated.

    I grew sweet peas for the first time last year. I planted them directly in an obelisk and container after frost and they did great. I moved it to a shadier spot when it got hot outside. I soaked them because I thought that was what you should do. Bonny zone 5b

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is a great idea to move the pot to a shady spot when it gets hot, you certainly get a longer bloom time. I like to pop them into my pots of bamboo, it is a great combo!

    Great video! Thank you. Do you ever sprout your Sweet Peas before planting? What do you think of this method?

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have but once I realized there was no benefit I stopped. I try to keep things easier.

      @@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Thank you. Your video was so inspiring. I do it because as impossible as it may seem, my seeds have a tendency not to sprout under the dirt. (I have a brown thumb and can kill almost any plant.) Once the Sweet Peas sprout under wet paper towels, I usually pot them and then transplant into the garden after a few weeks. I have been gardening for over 30 years and can croak more plants and waste more money than any gardener in Western Washington. I keep trying and studying, but my beautiful garden represents about a 15 - 20% success rate. 🥀

      @@noracharles80 I am all about doing what works for you best and that comes from doing the trial and error method you are using. I planted delphinium seeds this year "according to the instructions" of the site I bought them from as the method I had been using was frowned upon by them. So I thought I had to be doing it wrong. Well, their method has failed me and I went back to how I was doing it and had much more success. So phooey on what everyone else says and do what works for you!

    How long until you see them surface after you sow the seeds? I planted mine 3 days ago, but haven't seen any sign yet. Great Video

      If it is really cold they will take a bit but I can't give you an exact time. The soil temp needs to be 55 degrees to 65 degrees.
