- Today I am chatting with you as I plant out my sweet peas for the outdoor garden. Sweet Peas are one of my favorite flower to grow partly for there lush rambling vines and the beautiful ruffled blooms but most of all for there fragrant smell and I am also chatting with you about my thoughts on having a healthy gardeners mindset because, I don't know about you but I can loose myself in my thoughts of how well or how not so well I have done sometimes.

South Willamette Valley here. Finally got electricity back after 12 days. Started cleaning out the greenhouse today. Sowing sweet peas and onions tomorrow. You've motivated me.

Hi Beth thanks for your very informative video, I grow cut flowers on my allotment in NE England. This year it was a big disappointment due to having many family commitments and I was giving myself a hard time over it but your chat reminded me we can’t be good at everything all the time. This year I am planning lots of seeds I’ve never grown before and looking forward to plenty of flowers to give away to family and friends. Thanks again for inspiring me.😁

Good morning Beth! The weather is quite cold and I have been thinking a lot about starting seeds indoors. I have some sweet pea seeds to plant this year and your video was quite helpful. I have never grown sweet peas and have learned a lot about them. As far as your thoughts on if you are a good enough gardener...I think we all have those thoughts with everything in our lives. Is my house nice enough, is my cooking good enough, is my sewing good enough, the work I do at my job. Good grief! No wonder I feel like a mess every now and then! 😄 Have a wonderful day! ❤

Also, thanks for the reminder for each one of us to give ourselves some “Gardener’s Grace” when life happens and not everything gets done when it was planned or if at all. And…that you don’t owe anybody an explanation why. Yes, we need to celebrate our successes more and focus less on our failures. Learn lessons from the failures and move on. Your flower farm and garden are so beautiful, as our your bouquets.💚🥀🌺 Sweet peas are one of my favourites and are one of the cottagey flowers that I grew up with, and I still plant them in the garden. I really relate to what you are saying. I have always been the sort of person to rationalize things if I believe something isn't as perfect as I expect it to be, particularly with my creative skills - especially gardening. During my lifetime I have tried to work on not always not always expecting everything to be 'perfect' as trying to accomplish this can make our journey through life very tiring! We need to find joy and peace with our personal accomplishments; not be as hard on ourselves. No one is perfect. 💚
Well said, I agree. I use to be really hard on myself about everything, and wanting it to be perfect but I have worked on letting it go over the years but not to the point I'm lazy about it. I just put family first and work on doing my best in each moment or season.

I failed lat year also with my sweet peas. I am a very small gardener. Your video has encouraged me to keep trying and so I will try again this year and learn from my mistakes. Thank you for your beautiful videos! They are peaceful and comforting.
Mine also failed but not sure why they didn't have any flowers. Lots of healthy plant and leaves.
You can do it! I failed my first year and still to this day fail at things I know how to grow, don't give up my friend!

I can definitely identify with beating myself up! I tried so hard to establish more plants and bushes in my poor yard. The hours I spent on studying each plant, flower, seed, and bush… and then drought came with a vengeance. I’m still mad…
I was tempted to yank everything up and walk away, but my husband said to wait until spring to see what survived. So, yes, i can totally understand the frustration
I’m a firm believer that my garden has been more successful because I put drip into all of my gardens. 😊 good luck either your garden.
Oh dear, that's so hard, I get it, we lost a ton to a drought a few years ago but I was surprised on how much ended up coming back the next year. I think the key is to get your perennials established in fall and then add in your annuals in spring. If you have had die off id say fill your bed with easy sowing annuals this spring, plan out what needs replaced as far as perennials and plant new in fall. Good luck my friend!

This will be my fourth year trying to grow sweetpeas. The most success I had was my first year when I was 100% clueless. Now that I kind of know what to do I can’t even get them to germinate😢 I’m glad I found you…I will follow every step from germinating to fish emulsion…wish me luck!

You know, you are not alone in your wanting to apologize for everything that is not done. And you are certainly not alone in comparing to others. In fact, I have had the thought as I watch some of yours that I should do better because your beds are so nice. It's normal. But then I remember that everyone is in a different stage of life and what is getting thrown at them. So, learn from what others have done, but be happy and feel blessed with what you have and what you have done. There is beauty all around you, even amongst the weeds. As you talked about in your last video - contentment. I like growing sweet peas and will be growing again this year. I may try starting them indoors rather than direct sowing though. Good video Ma'am.
Thank you my friend, I know its so hard not to judge yourself against others who on the outside look like everything is so perfect. I find that outside mine don't get as tall but still amazing to grow, the trench of compost and fertilizer helps.

Oh, you all got hit hard, we got away with just a little snow, cold and ice. We still have some of it hanging around but its starting to melt. Stay safe!
Great video. I have big plans for the coming year, but i'll try to not giving myself a hard time over things that do not go as planned.
I think we all have to try not to give ourselves a hard time when things go wrong, I'm trying to balance with the good thought and successes of the garden.

Ty Beth for the video on growing sweet peas. This will be my 1st year growing them. Not a lot but just enough. Yours are always gorgeous as usual. I'm in S. Alabama and I can't wait to get my hand's in the dirt! Again, ty I just learned a lot from you!!
Well all the best to you this year and growing sweet peas, I do think to growing them were you have some afternoon shade will work better for you to keep them in a longer bloom time.

Thanks for the tips on growing sweet peas! This will be my second year as a flower farmer and my first attempt at growing sweet peas. Starting small to see how they will do in my climate here is central Georgia. I’ve always admired the romantic look of them online, but have never attempted to try to grow them in my 25 years of gardening. Better late than never 😂. I hope y’all have a great season!

Great information on sweet peas. Two sisters flower farm recommended using 72-Hole seed tray dibber, could save time making individual holes with pen when you have so many trays to sow.

Grew sweet peas last year! Had 10 plants and they did so well! So planting 340 sweet pea seeds this year😂 im in zone 6b,7a sometimes.
For anyone reading this I start seeds indoors beg. Of February and plant them outside when they are 6 inches tall. They love colder weather! If your worried about any frosts just throw a frost blanket over they will be fine!
Forgot to mention my peas get 3 hours of shade every day and it's from 4-6(blocked by my roof) then evening sun. So take that into consideration, our summers get very hot they can reach 118 or a bad summer but usually 98-103 is our usual and I get 6 weeks of perfect blooms.
That is awesome! Sweet peas are addicting for sure, I'm growing extra crop outside just for seed production, its going to be amazing i think. 340 is a ton of sweet peas, enjoy all that beauty.
It is an insane amount of peas😂 but I fell In love with them and it was hard choosing what varieties to get and I ordered from owl city and the Spencer variety seed options was either 20 or 60 seeds each, so I decided I'll plant every single seed😅
Hi I’m new to your channel and when I saw sweet peas I had to watch I live in zone 9B inland northern Ca And I love growing sweet peas mine are in the ground I don’t grow mine in seed trays there no need I put them in water like you did or put them in between a wet paper towel on a paper plate then I plant them in the ground I put them in two different spots in my garden the ones I planted a month ago are not up but the ones I planted about three weeks ago are up there almost to the pinching fase anyways I love the old fashion type good luck with your crop 👍

I love sweat peas. In another video, you said that you sometimes order from Enchanting Sweet Peas. I do too. She's in Sebastopol, CA and I'm in Forestville, CA about a 15-minute drive. She used to have an annual open house. I've been twice and it was beautiful. She did not reopen annually after the 2020 shutdown. Everything is online now. She has amazing varieties.
I love her hand written receipt and notes, so nice to get her sweet peas in the mail. I just ordered a few more from her this last week, I think I seriously have a problem. 😀

I realized I was lacking in pink sweet peas compared to other colors, so I ordered 2 varieties from select seeds since I already had a cart going (Miss Willmott and Mollie Rilstone). I've also ordered from Floret and Johnny's. I'm planting 22 varieties this year. I have 4 pea trellises from Gardener's Supply, but I also plant around our fenced garden.
I already have my autumn sown sweetpeas in the ground here in the UK. But i wont be sowing my spring ones til March. The Ethel Grace is my current favourite.
I love Ethel grace, the large lavender petrels stop me in there tracks each time. Happy growing!
So glad to have found a grower near me --Im in Newberg so we aren't far away from Rickreall at all, and I think our growing climate is identical. Did I hear you correctly that the seedlings you plant outside just go directly into the ground or do you dig a deep trench and put fertilizer/compost in first. I am just a home gardener and would want all mine to be planted out in the yard. I get mine to sprout fine--I do exactly as you do--soak for 24 hours. But have had them just "sit" when I plant them out. So I think your video has helped see why! And I have tried them in large pots this year and they are blooming like crazy and six feet high climbing obelisks! Love it!
I love what you’ve talked about! I think when you garden you care about plants and are actually sad when you’re the one who messed something up. (By you I mean me😂) but absolutely! Even in a small home garden, we’re always looking to perfection. Nature. Humanity itself means flawed. But when that process goes right… it’s the ultimate pat in the back! It’s like her flowers are a smile and a thank you. It’s almost as if she says “thanks mom, watch me shine” then it’s hard to cut 🤦♀️ but I can’t get enough of gardening! You guys too huh?
I have to agree, I have been known to keep on watering a plant that is dead just to make myself feel better. I'm always out in the garden, every day, defiantly cant get enough of it 😂

So nice of you to say but at times I feel like a mediocre grower because around us there are really big farms and I am very small scale😄.
I tried and tried growing sweet peas from seed with no luck. I’m not giving up. I’m going to try a different location this year.
That the attitude i like to see! watch for mice, slugs and birds all love them so keep netted, baited if you plant out by seed.
I have gardened for over 40 years and constantly am telling myself 'maybe next year' the mistakes are all part of the process or maybe like and mother nature made things not work this year.
I have to agree with you, I do think that each year the garden stretches you as part of the process and that is how life is, always learning. 🌼

I've been looking for that unicorn for over six months with no luck here in the US (abundant in the UK and Canada!). Anyway, I was wondering if you'd share your source for it? Would really love to grow some this year, but my window is quickly closing! Any help appreciated!
Its a hard one to find for sure, mine were a gift from a friend a few years ago, I grew for seed last year and shared some with our Patrion in a mix. I started a large patch for seed production so we will have them available this coming Jan. 2025🌱

Hi there! How do you condition your cut Sweet Peas? Any advice on getting the longest vase life out of them?
We cut straight into clean buckets with fresh cool water, I add Chrysal Professional 1 Hydrating Solution to the water. Hope that helps.
I'm new to the PNW, I'm between Portland and Seattle. Was gardening all my life, but I'm failing here. The night temperatures are at 50s and nothing grows here. How do you do it? Cover everything at night? Flowers start sprouting and veggies start growing in July during those crazy hot periods only. Please PNWesters, help me figure out this area 🙏

Peas love cold. My last frost date is may 15 I'm in eastern wa, I plant my peas out 6 weeks before. They can tolerate cold weather they actually really love it. If it gets really chilly under 35 I usually throw over a frost blanket just in case but they need cold to develop stronger roots to survive the hot summers. Hope that helps:)
Mariann, don't loose heart my friend, its a learning curve for sure. Sweet peas like a bit of cold for sure, but if you plant with a few hours of shade in the PM, hot part of the day that will protect the roots from the really hot we get and should give you a longer bloom time. We have a PNW flower meet up this month at OSU that will help you with growing issues in your area, PM me on IG if you want more information.
You mentioned that you spray the leaves with a weak fish emulsion. Does the fish smell linger on the plants? Do you have to rinse them off to make sure the stems don't go to the customer smelling like fish?
It doesn't, Its really week and only smells for a short time, like a day. We spray lower areas as they mature, close to ground were aphids get going first and we don't cut that low anyway in the harvest season. Hope that helps, its hard to explain. ill try and do a video on it this season.
Where is she located and her zone? I always want to know before subscribing. I winter sow my sweet peas successfully here in 7b-8a MS but I just installed raised beds so will also plant them up. My issue is getting them to last in our heat.
Hello, I'm in the Willamette valley of Oregon zone 8B On our farms average last frost date is April 18th and first frost date is Oct 30th. I think fall sowing is best in your area for early spring blooms but if you plant with afternoon shade you should get a longer bloom time. Good Luck my friend!

'Mermaids Dream' color blend/Mammoth from Renee's Garden Seeds &
Salmon colored Mammoth seeds from a local flower farmer.
So we do a 10 stem bunch on the vine for around 15.00 each, and if it's just the flower stems, it's bunched in 15 stems for around 10.00 each
Can these be grown in hanging pots?
I think they would get to long and might be a bit of work to manage.
Promix is NOT $35.00 for us regular gardeners!!! It is $113.00 for the two cubic ft. bale! Well worth it I'm sure, and I am going to order it, but you don't seem to be a person who likes to misrepresent anything, so thought I'd let you know. Happy digging!

I feel quite appreciative, too, that I get to grow so much. Unfortunately, there is no room for mining/storing dirt--but one day there will be! You are so kind to share info with me! I’ve managed to kill 3 David Austin roses by listening to advice of “ trim the roots “ .. from here & there via TH-cam .. i just couldn’t forgive myself for that.. now i don’t touch them.. the beautiful Ann Bolin,grace & the pilgrim roses + rose de resht.. let’s see what happens this yr. with them .. they might perk up.. but 2 are definitely dead .. i’ve planted new damasks, mosses & all sorts with the union above the earth too for a breather
I feel like I have learned over time to listen to your gut and that everyone's gardens are different. roses might not be your thing but maybe something else will be? Good luck my friend with this years garden🌷
@@crowleyhouseflowerfarm I wrote to Jason from frazer valley rose farm in Canada if new bareroots were budding & now with -6 new shoots have shriveled up .. but looking at your snow was just thinking.. your roses will come up & flower this yr. so i shouldn’t worry.. Jason’s keeping his fingers crossed.. hmmm

You are correct, you do not need to soak the seeds, they do well just planting straight into the ground or pots.
