I also recommend Real Seeds . Open pollinated and heritage varieties. They really care about their seeds and encourage growers to save their own seeds. They have great unusual vegetables and provide lots of helpful growing tips.
Sarah Raven seeds are just Johnson seeds which is part of the Mr Fothergills group of companies - ditto DT Browns. All the same seed just different packets and prices.
This is very true, but Sarah only lists the flowers that tend to be great for cutting for the vase, this is useful for those who are trying growing cut flowers for the first time as it can be a minefield out there. For example Dahlia seeds, so many on the market but not all state their eventual grown size and most will be bedding Dahlias growing no more than 12 inches high and not suitable for the vase....Steve...😃
Hi Steve, I've just got my first allotment inspired by your videos. I've started to clear it and it looks pretty good so far it is big so I have been on Premier seeds and bought loads of seeds, I can't wait till Spring Keep up the great videos it's given me a great new hobby and a new lease of life. So I thank you very much.
That is wonderful to hear Derek, an allotment is a happy place that in time will produce very well for you. Chunk every task down into much smaller jobs, then you will achieve more, faster. Work on small areas at a time and once ground is clear a hoe is your best friend. Best of luck with your new plot!!...Steve...😃
Hello Steve, I use Premier Seeds Direct too but hadn’t heard of the others. D.T Brown is a company that I also use , twice I got free parsnip seeds to grow from them complimentary which was a nice touch. I live in Scotland I had heard of the company in Annan so I might use them in future. I have saved your video to my TH-cam library for future use as I have already have all my seeds for next year. I like the seeds to come in simple packages too help keep the costs down. I like gardening to be on the cheap side , I like to recycle ♻️ too even my bags of compost adding seaweed & leaves, blood fish and bone , chicken manure pellets and lime . Gardening to me should be done by doing it cheaply as possible and recycling whatever you can , never throw away what you can reuse, cut down on plastics , take cuttings etc . I like to grow my own because not only it tastes better but you know the food doesn’t contain anything harmful and it cheaper too than buying from the shops. Plus side it keeps you active.
I think most of what you have written is pretty much the unspoken "rules" for most allotment plot holders and many gardeners too. Keeping active and out in the fresh air is so important in these troubling times and being able to have a "craic" with other plot holders over the fence too...Steve...😃
Thanks Steve for sharing your list. You actually made me aware of premier seeds when I first started growing and use them as well as others so do recommend them. Take care.
Excellent video again Steve and superb information. Thank you. You must have a look at real seeds in south Wales, some fantastic information on real heirloom varieties and loads of info on saving, drying and replanting seeds from your own crops. Have a look, I'm sure you will find something within their varieties that takes your fancy. Take care Steve Phil
Oh I do use Real seeds Philip, just not as much as I should do is all. There are quite a few companies that I use that did not make it into this top ten video and it is why it took me nearly 2 weeks to decide on this list and I had to keep the list short to keep peoples attention...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp I can imagine Steve, there are some very good ones out there if you search enough. Still, I enjoyed listening to your thoughts on your short (long) list and after everything I said, I placed my orders last night and ended up using Premier seeds for the majotiry! Happy growing Steve.
Many thanks Steve, great information. Have used a few of your recommendations already. On our allotment in Chester, the trading hut uses Kings Seeds for the members and we have been very pleased with them plus we get a little bit to add to our funds. Keep up the good work.
We used to use Kings seeds here on our site too, I think it came as part of being members of NSALG (National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners). ...Steve...😃
Very helpful vid Steve. As usual, honest and thoroughly explained. 10 suppliers is just enough to explore, too many and we lose concentration. You're a good teacher mate. I've been using Premier seeds since I started my allotment a year ago and You're absolutely right, I give them 10 out of 10! I'm just starting with Growseeds too. I like nipping into Wilkinsons in our little town, their seeds are often very well priced, especially at end of season. Seeds are still well in date but they just want them gone. Among other things I bought 10 packets of carrot seeds 5pence each! Thanks again
Nice bargaain find at Wilkinsons Pat, it is so difficult to walk past seed bargains, I guess next year you will be having Boiled carrots, steamed carrots, roast carrots purre carrots, carrot cake......Steve...😃
I'm raging , missed all the brown Friday sales of seeds in GB as I live in the north of Ireland. I've had to find new outlets for seeds in the south, no sales 🥺
Hi John, there are quite a few Irish gardeners fed up with the whole border/brexit thing, it needs sorting out quickly. Probably two people in the pub could sort it better and quicker rather than politicians!...Steve...😃
Thanks Steve, I have had my first order from Premier Seeds after watching one of your previous videos and am now a convert 😊 thank you. Love your videos 😊
Thanks Steve, What a list 👍 We are just finishing up with our Thanksgiving weekend so lots of turkey and side dishes all weekend 😋 Tomorrow we begin to check off our to-do list for Christmas 🎄 I hope you and your family have a great holiday season. Your channel is doing well and I hope 2022 is your best year!
Eagle Sweet Peas is a new one to me. Do seeds saved from their Chelsea Collection produce such a diverse range of flower colours as the original seeds, or a small range of dominant colours ?
I think they do but I am not 100% on that, I have only saved sweet pea seeds on a few occasions over the last couple of decades and it is something I should do more of and will do over the coming years...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp Thanks. With all expensive seeds I try and have a year or two from free saved seeds to spread the cost, then buy some more to start again. I try and plant some seperate for seed saving and let them go to seed very early incase of prolonged wet weather later on causing them to rot/go mouldy in the pods before they're ready to harvest.
Great stuff as usual, Steve. However, I WAS surprised that when recommending Simpson's Seeds for lettuce cvs you didn't mention their exceptional specialisms- tomatoes and capsicums (peppers). And they are one of the three companies I use for plug plants (the other two are Brookside- super quality- and Marshall's). Totally agree about ALL the rest (your list is almost identical to mine) . Thanks especially for Robinson's and Moles. I too have found Premier Seeds an excellent company to deal with.
Sarpo Mira for growing in buckets, they are a blight resisant main crop potato and it is the variety I will be using for my trials next year. King Edwards for roasting and chips. Charlottes for boiling (excellent taste) Internaational Kidney for tasty new potatoes. Pink fir apples for tasty quirky shaped new potatoes later in the season...Steve...😃
Hi, Steve x Thanks for your video (I've written them all down). Some I'd never heard of, but some I had. It's good to have a personal recommendation for them. I have used Premier Seeds Direct for *most* of my container garden next year - veg and flowers. How have you found their flower seeds? I am going now to check out Growseeds - I love using independent companies because I think they really out their heart into it. I have a few more seeds to get for next season (I seriously have a seed-buying problem! I need to get something to keep them all in!) and I'll see what they have to offer. Thanks again for these recommendations! ☺️
I'm glad you have found them useful Robin, for seed storage I have an affiliate link in this videos description Seed Storage Case amzn.to/3nSAgrs Quite a good price and excellent for organisation. Growseed are great, still a relatively new company so they will build on that and I expect some "bumps" in the road as they move forward. I will be using them more and more next season...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp That's funny because that very thing (but with the colours inside) is in my wish list. I keep trying to tell myself once I buy these things, I won't have to keep buying them. 😂 I've already found a couple of seeds I want to buy from Growseed, so hopefully I'll get them soon and find somewhere to plant them!
most of the big companies are owened by the same parent company if you look in to them so you don't really get much of a choice really. I prefer some of the more independant's and I tend to grow open pollenated varieties as I don't want a field of carrots ready on the same day like farmers and growers which is what most of the F1's are bred for.

Cheers Steve. Good video and the beard is cool!
Oh no, if the beard is cool, I'll have to shave it off !! ...Steve...😃
Sea Spring Seeds are fantastic for chilli and pepper seeds in the UK. Based in Dorset I think. Huge selection, decent prices
I also use Real Seed, they promote open pollinated, heirloom varieties which you can collect your own seed thus preventing GMO if that is of concern.
Yes, I use these too, but not as much as I should...Steve...😃
