    Came in from sowing sweet peas to find your video! Luckily my autumn sown seeds are doing well. I normally pinch out the tips as find they make stronger plants. Going to try and find a spot without bindweed this year.

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Anna, can you go "no dig" where your bind weed is? Charles Dowding has had great success killing bindweed off with that...Steve...😃

    • @annaeborall934
      @annaeborall934 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GreenSideUp Tried that Steve. Put compost over cardboard and the bindweed grew again strongly when the cardboard rotted. Then black plastic for a year. Needed the ground so took it up and cleared the mass of dead bindweed but it grew again. Gave up and dug which has lessened it but have to be careful what to plant. It always grows next to a seedling or plant so can only nip it off at ground level. Didn't have any when I took the allotment on however the two adjacement plots did so no prizes for guessing where it came from!

    Just in time! I sowed eight in loo roll tubes last Sunday under the grow light in the kitchen and three have already appeared. I'll sow more in a week or so. I'm putting some with my beans, some with my pumpkin arch, and maybe a few in a container with twigs so they can climb. I love the smell of them 😍

    Always grow Sweet peas for the memory my mother and grand mother always had great displays of them growing and their scent drifted over the whole garden i made my first sowing a few weeks ago in the same manor as you have just shown and the germination was first class and i made a second sowing today this is the first year i have not pre soaked the seeds and i have to say the germination was fantastic. I was going to autumn sow but i work six days a week and go to and come home in the dark over Autumn/Winter and my plot is a bit away from home but will give it ago when i retire.

    I've started using the organic slug pellets as well, in the greenhouse only, where I've used home made compost particularly. As the active ingredient is Ferric Phosphate it will only leave what is effectively a fertiliser - nothing toxic. I'm trying a few sweet peas this year - it's a long while since I grew them. I didn't know that mice would go for them - I thought they would be poisonous. I don't seem to have any trouble with mice though - maybe I've got to thank visiting neighbour's cats.
    Thanks for all your great videos - really helpful. All the best.

    I am currently growing lupin seedlings in root trainers and they are growing like mad. When they are re-potted I am going to put some peas in there. Peas grow so fast I always think its good to have some pots set up for them already before transplanting. Beans are the same, once they get their true leaves they seriously take off.

  • @David_Bell_growing
    @David_Bell_growing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I sowed my (also Eagle) sweet peas this morning in root trainers, 2 per cell which will be in a heated propagator in an unheated spare room I use for propagation, which will enable me to keep them at correct temperature and avoid exposing them to slugs/mice/voles.
    A second sowing of saved seeds will follow next month as those will be the right size to donate to charity plant sales in May.

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI David, which of the Eagle sweet peas did you choose? Always interested in what others are growing...Steve...😃

    • @David_Bell_growing
      @David_Bell_growing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GreenSideUp I looked through all their collections and came to the conclusion that their 'Chesea Collection' as sown by yourself was the best. 128 Seeds sown 2 per cell in root trainers, leaving 32 seeds left (4 of each colour) for another sowing as soon as another themostatically controlled heat mat arrives, which will increase my propagator space to 2.5m2.
      I'm labelling each variety and plan to seed save from all of them, but until I find out next year from a small sowing of saved seeds whether I will get a decent mix of colours from them, I'll still have to pay for another lot for my main sowing next year. Even if they're reasonably OK, there will still be the question of what will seeds saved from flowers grown from saved seeds will produce.

    I really enjoy your videos, so much good advice from experience! My question is, I have never grown sweet peas and have a few packs to sow but have NO greenhouse or polytunnel. I can start them inside but what do you suggest I do? I live in the Scottish Borders and wouldn't plant anything tender out till into May. If you could advise when I should start them inside, then do I just plant right out in the bed?

      There is actually a 'right way up' for using those, which will avoid them unwinding from the top as the glue dissolves. Make sure the pointy ends of the spiral are on the inside at the top and outside at the bottom. Standing them upright in a 24x cell tray will create airspaces between them and slow down mould growth on the cardboard, plus stop the tube unwinding at the bottom.
