    Plastic is in my life time. When I was a child in the 1960's I remember going to the beach and my bucket was made of rubber and the spade was made of wood and tin. You could buy tin buckets too. I also remember my mum being amazed at the new material... nylon and rayon that would now make cardigans. All our clothes were wool, or cotton. Tricky for some with woolly swimmers. Also I remember the shop around the corner where food like sugar would be weighed out and put into a paper bag and handed over the count r to my mum. No supermarkets. So it hasn't taken long to get where we are today....... little over 50 years. The really good thing is that people are changing it round again. We don't like the result. My daughter sent me a clip yesterday showing some supermarkets will have refill stations. Lots of new ideas are emerging and the kids in the schools are made aware daily of the problems and they will grow up/ are growing up, responding in many ways. I am optimistic.

    Once upon a time back when I don't know when we never had plastic carrier bags or plastic bottles or plastic chairs or plastic anything. The carrier bags were paper bags. The bottles were glass and the chairs were made of wood. The meats were not sold in plastic containers but in paper bags probably cause we bought from butcher and he put in paper bags. Yogurts could go in tiny glass jars. As does the little jars of meat pastes. Chicken paste. Beef paste. Why do we not BAN plastic? Why did we ever invent it? Why do we have plastic in toothpaste? That can not be healthy. Some ofus probably swallow tiny amounts of it. We got plastic going down our throats? plastic cancers. I think I might cough.

      telsah1 I agree with you, but if you went back to wood everything and paper everything, we would be killing off the forests even faster than we already are. It's a no win situation. The only solution.... Stop breeding! Populations need to go back down to a number capable of being self sustainable. Farming local foods for smaller communities, and hunting for your meat instead of mass buying at supermarkets. Since the population won't decrease, this is an impossible fight.

      Sam Ride but we could sustain the forests anyways, as long as the people whos cutting the forests down stop and agree to help us, we could fix this. But at the moment, the world cares about virtual money and want to be rich. It is also likely well have to adapt to plastic and the world will have to cope, the damage is done now, we just have to not make it worse.

      because it's a brilliant material. It doesn't give off taste, it's resistant against acids, it's easily formed into a shape, it insulates electrical currents. Without plastic the current world couldn't exist. We need to deal with our garbage better that's it and stop countries that dump it in the sea.

    What this doesn't show is that over 50% of the waste in the oceans is from fishing boats, including fishing nets which is what really kills the majority of animals

      you can always do research and spread awareness on social media, youtube, reddit etc. Be proactive, it will cheer you up. Check out the environment page on reddit. It's depressing at first but once you break through, it gives you a lot of information to work with

    This might be a super dumb question but shouldn't a purification plant prevent this?

    • @greghill3168
      @greghill3168 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      An honest question, but no it does not prevent it. Treatment plants separate solids from liquid, treat the liquid and release it into the water supply. Solids are broken up and then dumped. Microplastics and other solids will always end up in the water supply with current systems.

    Would be good if you could point what is the solution? There is a steel substitution for water bottles, even 19 liters. But how to deal with packaging?

  • @Alianger

    Why are dumps placed near the ocean and the plastics not re-used? That's so dumb

    • @mc2594
      @mc2594 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      landfill needs one side expandable plus it stinks, new plastic is cheaper than re-cycling old plastic, re-purposing it works quite well, see my full comment for more.

  • @mehmetalipasa
    @mehmetalipasa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Well I’d say:
    1. Plastic collection on the end of every river
    2. No usage of Dump yards, but 100% recycling
    3. Plastic cleaning in the sewage
    4. Start cleaning the sea.
    In 25 years we might have solved the problem, how about that?

    • @TheChug
      @TheChug 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Go tell that to all African and Asian countries... That's where the plastic oceans come from. Good luck.

    • @greghill3168
      @greghill3168 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean yeah your intentions are good but honestly who is going to pay for all of that. If there were financial incentive to collect plastic , then cleaning the floating (and non floating ) waste in the oceans and lakes would be possible.

  • @mc2594
    @mc2594 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Production efficiency and profit where the roads start far outstrip responsibility and cost where the roads end and there's few bins in between, landfill needs one side expandable and new plastic is cheaper than re-cycling old plastic although some is re-cycled far less efficiently than it's produced. Burying it out of sight and mind stopped working 50 years ago, now it's literally costing the Earth because 50 years behind or 50 ahead makes no difference to now if production efficiency and profit is all that ever mattered.
    The system has to be 360' / equally efficient both ends or it's broken and usually on purpose as it's someone else's problem than the company's that produced the plastic and waste. How it ends up in Streams and Rivers I don't know, we're hemorrhaging rubbish. Everyone can help by reducing waste to a minimum and recycling to a maximum, litter collecting rather than dropping it, being responsible for your own part in this death sentence for marine life.

    I have been aware and trying to do what i can to help turn things around.This is one of the organizations that i have been involved with. Due to the fact that i am fighting for my very life and future, I can't help financially. However, i have been making videos and constantly signing petitions. Everyone is either part of the problem, or the solution

      Simon Boudreau I have been eating less meat for years.. Dealing with gerd makes it challenging to even eat at times.. love the Veg burgers, BBQ an more veg food. I also have to take into account that my income is extremely limited so have to find the Vegan food on sale.

    • @simonb4689
      @simonb4689 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well vegan foods are the cheapest thing you can buy. dried beans and whole grains cost next to nothing. vegan doesn't mean fancy prepackaged processed food with the the V logo on it. its just plants. eat whole plant foods and no animal products at all for a month and i would be shocked if your gerd didn't reduce drastically.
      go to nutritionfacts.org for more.
      best wishes and keep on reducing that meat.

    Because of our inclination of money and comforts we choose to classify even worst and harmfull as valuable and important. Plastics and pesticides/chemicals causing disastrous/mass extintion effect on environment. So we can not change what has already been destroyed ,but by limiting ourselves we can certainly prevent further damages. Its very easy to live and survive without industries but not a single day without environment.

    how can you make a video about plastics in the oceans and not mention fishing ? I'm pretty sure that by weight/volume, most of the plastic in that plastic continent in the middle of the ocean is fishing nets and other gear. if you want to impact the plastic in the oceans and the mysery it brings to the marine life, and you are not willing to adress that the best solution for the population to have a major impact in their daily lives is to become vegan, you are doing a major disservice to the cause.¸
    just amazing.
