I half-expected a “Giger Counter” pun when you recounted your maybe-radioactive acquisition. I envy your collection and the space you must have for so many amazing pieces. Thank you for sharing!
Started collecting Hot Toys in '08, when they were still pretty new to the game. Even though I'm exclusively a 1/6 collector , I decided to pick up a couple of the sturdier, larger and highly detailed NECA figures.
This wouldve been expensive. As an ex hot toys collector who exclusively collected these and Predators, this is awesome to see a new video covering this line. Predators next? 👀
I always wanted one of these since i was a kid, but they’re not for playing. I got a Hasbro alien resurrection 12” for Christmas last year and left it in the box. I wish some company would make something you can get dirty and throw around. Really good review btw.
I personally do like the idea of xenos taking characteristics from their hosts it gives them a more interesting look then just everything ending up looking the same.
I wish Hot Toys would 2.0 Cameron's Aliens. A new Xeno Warrior 2.0, Ripley, Newt, Hicks, Hudson, and Vasquez would make a lot of Alien fans happy. I don't know if the demand would be there, but I would like to think all the Alien fans would step up to the plate and bat for them.
I just started collecting Alien figures this year and I feel like im super late into the game but, coming across your videos yesterday was very helpful in finding out what I'm getting into. Seeing all the type of brands that make them the styles, sizes, and the good and bad parts of the alien figures was super helpful and satisfying to watch.
The AvP brown alien warrior shown at 8:43 does indeed resemble the Alien Resurrection xenomorph in terms of the paint job, dome and sculpt in general but does clearly differs from it in terms of legs (the alien resurrection warrior has digitigrade legs and as you mentioned it misses the dorsal spine). Excellent review, Strange Form! Would love to see more reviews of other more rare figures (Marmit 1/3 scale figure - the plastic version; 25th anniversary Big Chap Marmit statues types A and B; Sideshow 1/5 Scale Alien Resurrection Statue, etc.).
Awesome deep dive into all of Hot toys Alien figures! I only have the final figure from 2016 but would like to get a few of the other ones you reviewed. Thanks for the informative post.
I’ve never owned anything from Hot Toys and now I probably won’t. If I’m paying a hundred bucks or more for a figure, I expect it to be of the highest quality possible. And durable. I’ll pass.
@SuperCollectorClark Thanks! interestingly enough, I actually got half of these from Japan. Yahoo auctions Japan, to be precise. I can see why no one else has done a review of the entire collection, as it was really hard finding intact and complete representations of the older figures.
Cool video. I think HT will eventually give Big Chap the 2.0 treatment and if he turns out like the Alien Warrior from Aliens or the Xenomorph from Alien Romulas, i think it will be amazing.
@CROMA1927 Seriously! And the "map guy" immediately getting lost, while the animal expert wants to touch something showing the most obvious "threat display" imaginable. They definitely didn’t sell Weyland being rich if this is only the expedition crew he could afford.
2:49 I would love to see a video of you making metal joints and pins on your blue variant if you haven’t finished the project. I’m currently fixing the tubes on a AVP Alien Warrior with magnets to detach and reattach it easier (My experience with more risky fixes like joints are barely nonexistent). Ik this video wasn’t made recently, i often rewatch some of your Alien videos and this particular topic of fixing Hot Toys Aliens often come to my mind.
Love the content you've been releasing! Your voice is relaxing and I enjoy listening about your deep knowledge on these figures and production history. Keep going with it, your channel will be monetised sooner than you know 🦾👽
I come back to this video a lot, particularly cause its just my favorite that youve done, and partly because i keep getting tempted to buy another Hot Toys figure. That being said, i was very curious about the AVP dorsal spine, which you brought attention to. Because I own one of the many Furyu AVP statues, and it also has the spine present. And very recently, i had stumbled on some foreign AVP merchandise (particularly a German DVD case) that featured promotional images of the suit in the film ...... And these images HAD THE DORSAL SPINE. So that confirmed to me that, at some point, the suit actually did have the spine present. I was able to find some more images of the suit with the spine, as well as some interviews talking about how they brought it back to make the design distinct from Resurrection, but ended up removing it when it got in the way of filming. Very interesting stuff. These interviews refered to it as a "headrest" which is apparent what Giger called it. One even claimed that that was the only reason Giger added the spine, as a rest for the head, and he actually wanted to remove it
This video brought me to your channel.. and I’m an instant sub!! And about to enjoy a morning of videos!! 👏👏 PS: A video like this, showcasing the predator line.. would be INSANE! 😂✌️
Welcome aboard! And you are right, Hot Toys has done some of the best Predators out there. At some point, I will be looking into the ultimate hunter, probably some of the 1/4th neca figures, or possibly Mezco, not sure yet but I definitely will be doing something Predator before the end of the year.
@@strangeform maybe a “Top Predator figures” video (since there’s so many options..) And then you wouldn’t have to limit it to just Hot Toys.. 1/4 Neca open mouth Jungle Hunter Predator, Hot Toys Samurai Pred, Hot Toys Wolf 2.0, are some of favs in my collection.
I personally look no further than the first two Alien films. The horror factor is watered down significantly with all of these lore-breaking origin stories and wacky hybrids. The obscure nature of the impossibly violent Xenomorph is what sells it. Now it’s being oversold, and feels more comical than scary.
Up until Alien 3 you had the first and second film and the Dark Horse comics, and all of these stories were in agreement that the Alien was a naturally occurring creature that evolved on the hell class planet, and would immediately overtake any environment that didn't have the checks and balances of said origin planet. In other words, they were an invasive species that would become the apex predator in any food chain outside of their home world. Then Alien 3 came along and subtly introduce the idea of the creature taking some genetic aspects of the host. Even with the human skull in the first film this wasn't expressly stated throughout the series, so the creature and its lifecycle was a pretty uniform idea until the third installment. Then you had Hasbro leaning into the concept and releasing a toy line with Xenomorph snakes and praying mantis, turning the success of storylines into a grab bag of resident evil like Xenomorph mutations, and the series never really recovered. And then along came Ridley Scott, (WHO HAS NEVER WRITTEN AN ALIEN FILM) trying to recapture his relevance. Scott is capable director, but he is very poor at choosing scripts, just look at his filmography, as it's incredibly lopsided. Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett wrote the incredible script for Scott's original Alien, and the awful (check their writing credits if you don't believe me) duo of Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof wrote the abysmal script to Prometheus. Ridley Scott does not have a single writing credit (he's not even accredited for the story idea) the stories aren't really his, so it's strange that people look to him for answers regarding the lore. Anyway, the awful scripted but beautifully filmed Prometheus lead a lot of fans into thinking that, because it was really polished, it was a brilliant film, irreparably dragging the series into a world of X-Files like black goo and mutated hybrid creatures. A direction that I fear we may never return from.
@@Febbyatbear Just know that hunting down intact versions of most of these is going to be a task all its own. Fragile is an understatement for everything except the two newer figures.
@GrayKiddo ha, at first, I thought you meant the character in Robotech and was like, wow, my voice is coming across much differently than I expected. But I quickly realized that you meant the voice actor. No, I am not him... but I was trained as a character actor in my youth and draw from that training to create the cadence and affectation in my videos.
Nice, and likewise I have all the ones you showed, with a few doubles for good measure ;) I have most in storage, so I'm just hoping they haven't degraded at all... the only thing I've ever really had issues with was my first ED-209's dome. I also managed to give you your 666'th like!
I live in Japan and own a battle damage Predalien, and a blue warrior from Aliens. This last one I got for about $55 because 3 articulations we're almost pulverized. I restored it by the tobacco ashes and super glue technique. It's now possible again although has limited mobility. The Predalien, I broke the inner mandible trying it to stay out and pulled it too hard that it detached :( Haven't been able to glue it back since the spot is too deep in it's throat. Great video.
That's a great fix, and using tobacco ashes as a thickener is a really interesting technique. I'm working on the extra one I have to see if I can come up with a plan for all four of the joints. So far, the one that has worked is using a stop motion figure's adjustable ball joints. Basically I drilled down into both lower and upper sections of the leg at the knee, and inserted the metal rods with superglue about 2 inches in either direction. Both rods attach to an adjustable ball joint, which gave me full mobility at the knee. The nice thing is that the work is easily hidden by the rubber joint cuff.
Inner mandible? You mean inner jaw? Also, for it being the BD version, it's technically more film accurate that way, since Wolf ripped it out before stabbing the abomination through the head.
Bought the Aliens figure, the original blue one. I primarily got it because to me it looks like it crawled out of the pages of Dark Horse's Aliens comics. The figure arrived new in box, completely unopened, but the joints were broken. Unlucky! I went at it with some super glue and I got it to a point where it can stand when propped up on another figure, but the legs are essentially noodles. At some point down the line Im gonna try and get a drill and put some metal rods into its legs.
I also received a broken one, so I have two of the blue ones. I got some metal stop motion armature joints off of amazon, drilled into the upper and lower legs about an inch deep, and anchored it in with some gel super glue. Fortunately, I was able to preserve the rubber joint coverings. When I was extracting the joint peg, it was turning to powder like something from the Andromeda Strain. Hot Toys definitely used to use some questionable quality plastics, as anything prior to 2010 you have to treat like a museum curator touching archeological artifacts that are thousands of years old.
@CaptainSamuelVimesBootsTheory I'm working on a review video. There were some things I liked, and some things I was disappointed with. I don't want to discourage anyone from seeing it, though, as this films success will most likely lead to even better Alien projects. But I do get the feeling that I will enjoy Alien: Earth a bit more than this one.
I'm more impressed with your opinions on the films than these figures, it seems most fans are hungry enough for content (or are quite frankly just tasteless) that they embrace the many mishandlings of the film franchise. I love the first 2 and even the third (I seem to be in the minority that dislikes the assembly cut) Resurrection is a mess that I can enjoy if I think of it like a comicbook spin-off, and everything after that is a mess. Prometheus is a slap in the face of the source material.
I think the early "Aliens" figures, although inaccurate, are gorgeous. I can not say the same for the "Alien³" figure... it looks strange, nowhere near on the level of Prime 1's Runner rendition. It's not even on the level of Aliens Fireteam Elite NECA Runner.
You’ve not got another sub! I have been closely following your channel. I wasn’t sure about it so I kept my eye out. But after this one, I have decided I enjoy the content and most of it is stuff I’m ACTUALLY interested in. I agree with pretty much everything said here. I actually just got lucky and came across a collector who is selling his whole alien and Predator collection including everything in this video at the price he bought it for upon release. So, good to hear someone be honest about them. Some of them I wouldn’t normally get but being they’re the only 1/6 scale option out there, I’m doing so anyway. Like the Big Chap. Either way, I think your channel is actually better than a lot of others that are monetized. So keep it up! I do wish I understood the whole Japanese auction thing. I’d love to be able to do the same.
Thanks, happy to have you on board! And what an awesome score. How is the condition of everything, I am trying to develop a good joint replacement strategy for the earlier ones. If there isn't a single problem you should buy a lottery ticket. As for the auction thing, once you join one of the sites like buyee, it is mostly like eBay, you just have to get to know the right combination of words to put in the translat surch function (some of their terminology is different, but nothing you can't get a hold on with Google translat, ie cut and paste the Japanese kanji/kana for xenomorph, alien and such) I know that this is a generalization, but on a whole, japanese sellers tend to be more honest and less about maximizing profits than most, so I have never had problems that can't be quickly rectified. I was in shock when I got a pristine 79 kenner Alien for under $200, my hands were shaking when I opened that box.
@@strangeform Thank you! Glad to be aboard! Ya I REALLY lucked out. When the guy contacted me in response to an add I posted in a BST group looking for certain HT Predators he told me a few he had that I mentioned. He then told me the price which seemed 2g2 be true. And in my experience it almost always is. But I currently have the Aliens Warrior and Predalien on the way from him now. And have already received a brand new unopened Wolf Predator Heavy Weaponry from him. I will have a few more from him as well. I am very worried about the joints of the Predalien… I really want to display it with Wolf… what were the main issues with your Predalien? Not the battle damaged variant but the original. So as far as the Japanese sites. I sort of get it… but to be honest I’m not even the greatest with EBay. I used to purchase things from HK websites for the custom mechanical keyboard hobby so I thought maybe I’d have some experience but, I was lost haha. Think you may make another video about it one day? Maybe you shouldn’t give away too many secrets… haha. I LOVE my Kotobukiya Aliens. And I love the little mini figures you had in the video. I need to find a way to get ahold of those. My so would also enjoy those.
@@strangeform Sorry I didn’t really answer on the condition. Nothing I’m getting from him has been opened. I’ll be the first to open them. The Wolf Predator isn’t THAT old so he was in perfect brand new shape. I’ll see how it goes with the predalien and Aliens Warrior. As well as the Jungle Hunter, Dutch and Billy, the AvP predators (2.0) versions. Oh I also have an unopened Grid Alien coming. That is another I’m a little worried about because of the age.
Your gonna hate this but I love the predalien it just feels natural to have the xeno takes on traits of its host otherwise why go through the trouble of that type of reproduction when there are more effective ways in nature to reproduce faster I feel that the chest bursting was just added so they could explain how the Xenomorph species were able to spread to different worlds.
Wow, I find it baffling how inaccurate some of these figures are. Neca really soloed Hot Toys for more than a decade in terms of screen accuracy, even if they're technically two completely different scales.
Recommending “just paint it” on a high-end figure like this is offensive to the non-hobbyists because how tf they gonna paint shit? And it’s offensive to the hobbyists cuz we tired from puttin in max-effort and i just spent a whole lotta cash (a whole lot more than if it was a plastic model kit), i ain’t tryna put any further effort in that.
i love your video. but it completely put me off from buying anything from Hot Toys. i admire your investment. i dont have the space or patience to display figures like this.
Ah, I see you don't spend a lot of time in the alien fandom. There is a portion of the community that absolutely hates it when you call the thing a "Xenomorph". Largely because the term was coined in Aliens to describe the type of creature they would be facing, the word basically meaning "strange form" or "foreign shape" in Greek. So originally the name Xenomorph was never supposed to be the creature's actual name, but a generic scientific way of describing what the Marines would be facing. In the films and scripts the Xenomorph has been called, a Creature. Monster. Dragon. Beast. Star Beast. Animal. Bug. And Thing, as many if not more times than Xenomorph. In the extended material the term Xenomorph has been synonymous with the creature but it wasn't until Romulus that the term was actually canonized to mean the Alien we all know and love. Knowing this I set out to use many of the terms the creature was ever referred to throughout the series in this video.
Its disappointing hearing how fragile these figures are but its cool you were able to get your hands on these I never knew they existed
I have the aliens alien figure the head broke off still cool figure though BTW where's boon? The night breed mask is awesome

Hopefully the Alien Romulas figure will be more durable. It looks like HT might have broken new ground of Xenomorph figures with it, so we'll see.

@@strangeform oh nice can’t wait for the vid, and yup I agree with u
@@strangeform sadly the series still can't escape Ridley and his black goo. We'll have to see how the tv show turns out.
Is Prometheus the best film in the franchise? No. But its definitely the most interesting.
Yes!!!!! Its here!!
A person who likes xenomorph figures but didn't watch the movies, THAT'S ME🗣️🔥🔥🔥
Just bought the hot toys alien warrior on this recommendation
The alien from 4th movie has wrong legs.
Thanks for the vid. 🙏
You are very welcome.
Well now I know if I’m looking for a PredAlien I better make sure that it’s not ☢️ contaminated
dog alien is my favorite
Big chaps arse is cracking me up
Where are these Japanese sites you mentioned for bidding as I often spent silly prices on my collection , any help please
The nightbreed serial killer. That's right the ALIENS and the queen were Brown in the movie.
That is another I’m a little worried about because of the age.
excellent!
Its rewatch time :v
40th anniversary Big Chap neca figure is objectively better looking than the hot toys one
@weakbird5579 I agree, wholeheartedly... a lot of figures jog right past that one to take their place in the xenomorph beauty contest lineup.
what are you gonna say to me now that you've killed me
L for the Prometheus hate.
You can have an Egg, as a treat
Big chap♥️
Wow, I find it baffling how inaccurate some of these figures are. Neca really soloed Hot Toys for more than a decade in terms of screen accuracy, even if they're technically two completely different scales.
Awsum
finally someone said it, big chap from hot toys is really bad
Recommending “just paint it” on a high-end figure like this is offensive to the non-hobbyists because how tf they gonna paint shit? And it’s offensive to the hobbyists cuz we tired from puttin in max-effort and i just spent a whole lotta cash (a whole lot more than if it was a plastic model kit), i ain’t tryna put any further effort in that.
Damn!
Is that a mask? Or are you palpatine?
is that human? why they have human skull in head
alien resurrection is awesome. You're a Ridley Scott fanboy
The Best is McFarlane toys original alien 12" 1979. PERIOD
i love your video. but it completely put me off from buying anything from Hot Toys. i admire your investment. i dont have the space or patience to display figures like this.
Why are you calling it "the creature" or "the alien" when it has a very well known name, the Xenomorph?
@@strangeform I personaly dont really like when a xeno is called alien, simply because of there beign many movie/game creatures you can call that.
im out
I needs them all and they ain't toys they are collectors items you heathens
I would love to watch this video but I despise that mask.
why u looking like mr cruel man, its throwing me off ;(
EXCELENTE , EXCELENTE VIDEO AMIGO .....¿ ALGUNA PÁGINA DONDE COMPRAR ESOS ALIENS ? ....GRACIAS .....😮
All Hot Toys xenos are crap. Maybe the Alien warrior is ok.
