  • This clock was discovered in a long closed auto repair shop and tow yard and it's certainly seen better days. Likely from the 1970's or possibly 1980's, it's rusted, cracked and missing parts. Can we bring it back? Let's get busy!

This was a great video. The tool rebuilds are fun but this was something different and fun to watch.

Thanks! Working on old electrical tools, signs and appliances is a lot of fun. Hopefully this will turn up in the workshop on my brother's channel: @whattherust

Awesome job! It is an amazing transformation, and the light strip idea is awesome!

Thanks! I would bet that the LED strip light looks better than the fluorescent ever did.

Beautiful job Matt! Your patience and skill set gets the job done. I’m sure Richard will be quite happy with the final results.

Thanks! It's amazing that the clock came back to life. Should look good in his workshop.

I remember back in the 60s getting air for my bicycle at closed gas stations seeing lighted signs like that glowing.

Yes, this one must have been on for many years before it was retired. A lot of history in it.

Yes! When I was a pre-teen kid in the 1970's I'd see these in auto parts stores when I went with my father and wonder what Motorcraft represented.

Thank you very much! It was quite a surprise when that old clock motor started running. I could have replaced it but seeing this working with the original motor was far better.

Congratulations on the 1000 subscribers. This may be my favorite project yet. I've been fascinated with lighted clock signs since I was a kid going with my father to the local auto parts store. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for one of these since you showed how easily they can be refurbished. The only thing I would do different is mounting the switch in that hole using a large fender washer as an escutcheon. Keep the great content coming.

Thanks! I used to refurbish a lot of old bar lights back 20 years ago so this was somewhat familiar but still a challenge.

Wow! Love that clock! As soon as you said you wanted lights I immediately said use the LED strip. I’m glad you heard me 😆 Are you going to give this back to Richard? Lol It would be hard not to keep it. Great job, thank you!

Yes, I'll be sending it back to him for his garage. Great minds think alike on the strip lights. They don't get hot, consume very little energy and seem to last a long time.

Nice restoration. I had my doubts but you pulled it off. Instead of the red thing covering the damage perhaps you could have covered it with a switch plate and switch. Thumbs up!

Agreed! I had thought of that. I just didn't have a plate large enough to go from the steel back to over the hole in the plastic. That and this plastic is so brittle that cracks if you look at it the wrong way. :)

    Use WAGO connectors

Thanks for the tip! I just ordered some. That would have made wiring this a bit easier.

You should have soaked it in hydrogen peroxide and put it in the sunlight. It would have brought it back to a white color.

That's an interesting tip, thanks! I don't know if it was ever a bright white but i bet that would have helped.
