  • What Remains Of The Capital Of The Pharaohs?
    Let's see what remained of the first capital of unified Egypt: Memphis. Was the city founded by the first king of Egypt, Narmer/Menes, or was it Epaphus who named it after his wife?
    Let's take a closer look at the breathtaking sculpture of Ramses II (Ramesses II) and the mysterious sphinx of Amenhotep II... or maybe Hatshepsut? We will learn more about the history of the city and find out why it was built in Mit Rahina.

      I absolutely agree with you. The overall quality of work is excellent. I don't expect perfection, but there are so many alternative history channels that produce trash and people fall for it. You and Irena are NOT among them. I also find that mainstream archaeologists are poor at communicating and that where you and Irena, and a few others, really excel.

    this reminded me of the words of the arab historian "Abdullatif al-bagdadi" when he visited Memphis' ruins in Egypt in the medieval times. He admired the city and its artistry and abhorred the practice of quarrying its stones for building. He stated that the ruins covered vacious area that you would walk for half a day in any direction to reach the end of the ruins. I, myself, being from native fellahin population, cry everyday for this great city and mourn its previous glory as if I witnessed it. Thank you very much for remembering my poor city Memphis and honoring it with a visit though very little remains of it.

      I did not know this Abdullatif al-Baghdadi text, He was undoubtedly a very wise man. We can only imagine how spectacular the ruins of Memphis and Heliopolis were. Best regards!

    Hi Irena 👋. Sorry it's been awhile, I've got a few of your recent video's to catch up on. That statue of Ramses the Great is UNBELIEVABLE!! Im blown away by the detail and excellent condition! I could watch a full hour just on that! I always get it mixed up, but Memphis was the first capital and then Thebes? It's again unfortunate that, the particular area you couldn't go into is closed to tourists: NO
    EXCEPTIONS. Great as always! See you next episode! 🖖😎🤘🇨🇦❤️

    Thank you for this one. I always enjoy your videos showing these places because I get to live through you for a few minutes seeing these treasures of the world that I’ve never seen myself. I’m especially fond of Ramses the Great though and have been obsessed with him and his history my whole life, so this video was especially enjoyable for me. Ive watched many of your videos, and I always enjoy the ones like this the most where you just simply show a wonderful place and discuss its history. I love the close-up shots you take of things, because most videos out there don’t show the details up close very well like that. That statue is breathtakingly large and beautiful, even on camera. I’m sure it’s absolutely amazing in person. I always read about its massive size, but no one ever showed and described its detail and beauty like you did here. If you were to rank the best statues ever made across the world, this one would probably have to be high on the list. One of my biggest life goals is to travel to Egypt and this is one of the “must-see” places for me. To walk or touch places/things that Ramses touched and see his mummy in the museum just sound absolutely magical to me. Someday I hope to experience it. When I watch your videos traveling there, it inspires me to reach my goal of visiting there even more, so thank you for that, and keep it up.

    Super!!! Dziś pierwszy raz od dawna oglądałem na dużym ekranie. Może nie było tu aż tylu pięknych widoków ale zbliżenia kamiennych rzeźb też robią niesamowite wrażenie. Myślę, że to świetny pomysł odwiedzić czasem muzeum z kamerą. Świetny odcinek!

    • @ancientsitesgirl
      @ancientsitesgirl  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Dziękuję, cieszę się że ci się podobało, mimo że tak nietypowy odcinek. Z muzeami jest jeszcze trudniej niż z piramidami, jeśli pozwalają tam filmować, to tylko telefonami😕 a ja uparłam się na kamerę z obiektywem zbliżonym do ludzkiego oka żeby oddać jak najlepiej atmosferę tych miejsc i obiektów. BTW te zakazy filmowania to często łamanie nowego egipskiego prawa... nie jest jednak łatwo "walczyć" z inspektorami i strażnikami na miejscu🙄

    1:47 The writing is done over the belt and dagger. And it's crude and the polish isn't the same as compared to the finish of the rest of the stonework. Was it was done well after this statue was made?
    I do have a question. What is the tool in his right hand? Because it looks like it was cut off to leave just the handle of the tool. And then they covered it with hieroglyphs to hide that fact. The bottom of the statue looks like it was attacked by picks to tear it down. But the left arm to the head looks melted. What did the left hand hold?
    Things that make me go, hmmmmmmm.

    What if Ramshes only wrote his name on this statue ? and the statue itself belongs to another builder possible even before the dynastic Egypt itself. The craftmanship of this 80 tone statue is incredible.The hyroglyphs on the statue look worse quality than the Statue itself.

    • @ancientsitesgirl
      @ancientsitesgirl  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      not in this case. it is known exactly how Ramses portrayed himself in various years of his reign. hieroglyphs were supposed to be legible, not necessarily beautifully made. such statues were not yet created in predynastic times...

  • @NoIce33
    @NoIce33 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I found Memphis quite disappointing. An open-air museum, the size and feel of a parking lot, representing what was once one of the most influencial cities in the whole world. The statue of Ramesses is impressive but by that time I had seen and read enough on him to find him and his colossi quite cringy.
    The now closed excavation area behind the fence will hopefully one day be on display and the museum will be more worthy of that city with unfathomably deep history.

    • @jesseleesamples
      @jesseleesamples 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Commenting on the museum there and the way things are displayed, and remarking on the way people have pillaged great historical sites like Memphis is certainly accurate, but that statue is an absolute marvel of human history and deserves more than to be described as “cringy” imo lol. It’s not only absolutely gigantic, but its detail and craftsmanship are absolutely astonishing to behold. It’s hard to comment on who the man was in the statue, but more than likely most kings in history weren’t the best people. I don’t think it’s fair or necessary to degrade the statue or other works of art made in his image because of that though. It’s a wonderful piece of art and human history and should be respected and preserved.

      @@jesseleesamples Yea, I quite agee, the statue is a marvel. And I don't think Ramesses II was a negative person, but he sure was full of himself even for a king of Egypt, building and usurping an array of monuments to himself that far exceeded his actual achievements, and generally bragging beyond measure. Hence I wasn't particularly thrilled to find yet another statue of him, even if this was indeed the most remarkable of them :)

      @@NoIce33 Ramses has plenty of accomplishments during his reign though. He wasn’t some weak king who barely held onto power for a few years. Egypt prospered greatly under his leadership for many years, and I think a good indicator for how good of a leader he must have been was what happened after he was gone. The country definitely went into a downward spiral after he passed, so he was obviously a very strong leader and an effective king. The people of Egypt likely ate and lived very well during his reign compared to other time periods under other kings. Pretty much every single Pharaoh could be considered a bit “full of themself” if you consider that they all built huge monuments with their names and likenesses all over them and told stories of their triumphs on their walls. I really doubt that Ramses was any more full of himself than any other Pharaoh, he was just way more successful and long-lived so he had more time to express it. He had more years to build or carve his name on monuments than others. If King Tut didn’t pass as a young boy, his name would’ve surely been on statues and temples across the land as well. I mean, the Pharaoh’s were considered to be the human manifestation of a god and their people worshipped them as such, so how much more of an ego boost could you get than that lol it’d be hard to not become a little full of yourself in that situation. There were definitely Pharaohs and kings throughout history who were much much worse and way more full of themselves than Ramses. Akhenaten sure seemed confident in himself based on what he did during his reign lol I would say he was way more full of himself than Ramses was, but he didn’t reign nearly as long so there’s just less artifacts from his time. The fact that Ramses lived and reigned for so long doesn’t necessarily mean he was an egotistical maniac who wanted his face and name everywhere. He just had 90 years of prosperous time on his hands to build and do what Pharaohs did, so more of his artifacts exist.

    I don't believe any of the Ramses artifacts or statues, and here is why. All of the inscribed text, that declares this is Ramses work, and this is his image, etc. were added on by Ramses. The quality of the inscriptions, is of much inferior quality than the statue itself. In fact the statue itself, is enigmatically perfect, in its symmetry, from side to side. Much better work, than the artist, that scratched, RAMSES on the bottom. Most of the Ramses artifacts and artwork, were not of his dynasty. He stamped his name on everything, that had a blank spot. It almost embarrassing that so many are fooled.
