- Take a virtual walk through Hubbard's Annex, a hidden gem on Mackinac Island! Hubbard's Annex is one of the oldest neighborhood's on Mackinac Island and the Victorian homes, landscaping, and views are some of the best in the Midwest. We hope you enjoy this rainy day walking tour of beautiful Mackinac Island.

Some history on the neighborhood: Gurdon Hubbard came to Mackinac Island in 1818 working for the American Fur Company. Later, he purchased 80 acres and built a home on Mackinac Island, which at that time was also the second National Park in the US. (Yes, Mackinac Island was the 2nd National Park in the US after Yellowstone, another fun fact that many people don't know!) His home was destroyed in the tragic 1871 Chicago fire and he neared bankruptcy. To recoup his losses, he began selling lots from his property as building summer cottages in the National Parks property was a fashionable idea. Today, it's a historic neighborhood and a beautiful place to escape for a peaceful walk!

Mackinac Island is beautiful, even in the rain! Hubbard's Annex is such a neat neighborhood to explore. There is so much history in this part of the Island. It's definitely off the beaten path, but worth visiting if you have the time. And how about those hedges? My oh my they sure are impressive! Enjoy! ✨

The small and charming "cottage " , 3rd home shown on the right was in our family for 30 years. This extraordinary chapter in my family's history will forever be a lovely and substantial part of our hearts...it was truly a privilege.

Mackinac Island is truly a special place! It has lots of tourism and is best enjoyed May-October. Definitely recommend visiting www.mackinacisland.org for more information!
Love it, love it, love it. The only thing that made me sad, is seeing people keep a single horse in the yard. They are herd animals and don't thrive alone.
So glad you enjoyed! There are generally more horses together but they are often out and about, busy pulling a carriage, out for a ride, or getting taken care of.

Things are definitely a lot different in the winter. The tourism season ends at the end of October and most places shut down. There is a small population of about 500 residents and even a public school and activities that you would expect in any small town, but it's definitely different than the summer months!

Is there much fruit available there year round?
There aren't many fruit trees, mostly just a few personal gardens. The growing season is super short on the Island so difficult to grow naturally.
