How rare is English gold ?

  • Gold Panning and prospecting at an English river in search of a few specs of the good stuff.
    With Covid-19 restrictions still in place I cannot travel to the usual spots in Wales and Scotland.
    Today I sampled the dirt in the bedrock cracks and crevices.
    If you are new to gold panning and prospecting I would also recommend that you get your self the latest book out there compiled by Lee Palmer - Gold occurrences in the UK

    Another great video my friend. I have only just got a detector and I find your videos really informative. I am 66 years old and have just come to this hobby, much inspired by you I have to admit. I live in Scotland and find the laws and rules on metal detecting very confusing, if you at some time could find the time to set me straight I would really appreciate it. As an ex diver I am drawn to sniping in the local burns and rivers but really the whole range of the hobby interests me. Sorry for the long winded post but your videos have inspired me for the first time in years.

      Hello Alex and thank you for the comments, they are really appreciated. There are a lot of grey areas about this subject. I understand that metal detecting has a lot more protocols and declaration of certain artifacts and finds, which I totally get. Not forgetting permissions etc. Gold panning is a nice recreational hobby where some locations in the UK openly promote it . Other places seem to be very popular with enthusiasts and there are no restrictions other than no overnight parking. Personally I think Sniping is the least intrusive way of finding a few specs. I would always recommend contacting the British gold panning association for further guidance. Get your wet suit on pal and let me know how you get on.
      Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

      There are so many grey areas on this subject that I wouldn't want to misinform you about. I would always seek the best advice from the British gold Panning association, but you can pan at a few locations in Scotland where there is gold to be found with a days permit. There are places in the UK , England and Wales that like to promote gold panning for tourism too but that's more from the novelty aspect of things. It's a great little hobby and to find a diddy spec of gold is an amazing feeling .......and you won't get rich quick (if , at all)
      I tend to go for a picnic, walk the dog and spend a few hours panning , usually out of site and out of mind pal. Thanks for the comments Chris

    Hello. You said ‘though its heavy it can float due to its microscopic properties’.
    Watching how you fill the sluice with one portion of material after another (your earlier films), I am wondering, is it possible that particles of gold just ride over already occupied ridges of the sluice and finish back in water? Sliding over the material that settled there before? Or the ones that already settled, can they be pushed out by new portion of material? Did anyone check how much gold can be lost back into water? How accurate is sluicing?

    • @MrDazP1adv3ntures
      @MrDazP1adv3ntures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point Greg. Gold can float because of it's is hydrophobic properties: ( I said the wrong thing - "Hydroscopic" ,oooops) it repels water. Because of this, even if the piece of gold is first completely submerged, if it gets near the surface it will throw off the water above it and float. Almost like when you lie on a mattress and it holds the shape of your body. It's surface area will be the key to this happening though. A solid lump of gold will sink like a lead weight (or a gold weight)............I am rambling on a bit here.
      Sluices create low pressure areas on the riffle sections which should allow anything heavy in the cons to drop out of the flow with greater effect. There are and always will be losses with sluices, I'm not too sure but 3 % would be a ball park figure and it could be much higher.
      The fascinating thing is that when you look at the journey gold takes from being picked up by your shovel, go through a classifier and then be washed down a sluice run from a smaller shovel. Even the smallest particles of gold will come to rest somewhere on the run.
      Sluicing is great to help you process the dirt and overburden quicker in order to hit the juicy pay layer, where ever that is.
      I'm still learning too Greg and that's all part of the fun.

    Hi Daz, recently became interested in trying my hand at panning, and found you along the way. Im travelling to cornwall in a few weeks and want to give it a shot. do you have any tips on where to go or any rivers in the Cornwall/falmouth that have potential, or what types of rivers best increase your chances. I have looked into cornwall gold panning and it does seem to be an are of england that you can find gold. just don't know where to start.

    • @MrDazP1adv3ntures
      @MrDazP1adv3ntures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could try any river in that area. They reckon a lot of gold was taken in the bronze age almost akin to a mini Klondike way back then. Camborne and Carnon Downs could be places to try, also the river Dart and the river Fowey. Potentially any stream down there could be worth a few test pans. I think a large nugget was found in a stream near Carnon Downs. It's probably worth researching the tin mines to see if there was gold there as a secondary element.

      @@MrDazP1adv3ntures Thanks for the advice, i will definitely look into that. I assume it would be best to stick to rivers/streams that have a rocky bed rather than mud, search the crevices and cracks between bedrock. still have no idea what im doing other than what ive seen in videos but i am looking forward to that first spec/flake. just ordered my panning kit.

      @@kyaltaylor4587 Hi Kyal, Just try to be focused at the river and yes look for bedrock cracks if you can. It can be a daunting experience when you get to a river and your mind goes blank after watching a lot of videos. When you see that first spec you will be hooked !.

      @@MrDazP1adv3ntures Thanks for the tips Daz, much appreciate it. Unfortunately i wont be able to visit those rivers you mentioned, they are just too far away from Falmouth. The river kenall seems like it might be a good one to try, it also passes close to an old tin mine. Thanks for the help again.

    Anywhere in Lancashire? Where best place to go and do this legally? Do you need permits or anything?

    • @MrDazP1adv3ntures
      @MrDazP1adv3ntures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would try any river or stream and simply give it a go. If you can get permission to prospect from the land owner or farmer then that's all the better but in general I just look for ideal locations with public access and walk to the places where others may want to have a picnic beside the water or have a paddle. You can get permits at Leadhills etc but even some local authorities such as near Nenthead have publicly looked at panning activities for the tourism benefits.

      You are not too far from Abergele then. I believe a river that flows in that region is gold bearing. Not sure of it's name though. I would also research other locations in North Wales. Any river or stream though is worth a cheeky pan durk.
