Yes, indeed. The props, I mean. They are meant to provide warning if the rock above is moving; the props make a creaking sound - hopefully enough time to not get caught in a cave-in.

There are ancient abandoned and disused mines over the entire globe, some date back to roman era and beyond. But what if these earth cavities after the mining has finished could be used for a purpose. There are a few ideas that could be of interest. They could become luxury living quarters using a combination of light tubes and artificial lighting, they could be used to house under ground nuclear power stations, they also could be used as water storage areas. Vertical food farms mushroom farms or research facilities. The point is if we are going to invest in mining projects that create deep cavities far into the earth simply abandoning them after mining stops is a MASSIVE waste of the resources it took to produce them. We should be integrating a final design purpose into the mining projects before we begin to dig. which means the way in which the mines are built can be directly related to the final project once mining is finished. Use your common and we Can fix this planet.

You were very lucky pulling that dynamite out. Over time it sweats out nitro glycerin which crystallizes and is highly percussive. Even the lightest touch can cause it to detonate which could have caused the whole shot face to fire. Your recklessness is staggering.
Never mind the timber look at all the gold still in the rock above your head. Gold is natural not shiny and dull in colour

Excellent video Antonio. I have a piece of that pyrite/quartz veinstone that they were handing out on the inaugural open day they had there when it was re-opening in the late 1980's. I keep it as a memorable specimen. Around the same time a mine explorer colleague and I were invited to look around the 'other' royal gold mine, nearby, by the mine manager there at that point in time. The 'bloody' iron sulphide pools you captured are splendid. Kind regards.

Birch wood rots faster than most other wood...therefore, very untrustworthy as props...😳
Props in mines were more often used as early warning systems. . Rock shifting can be silent but the sound of props breaking would alert workers to the danger.

When we used to bore up handle the powder to prep all the holes. Occasionally snapping some powder sticks in half when we didn't need so much in the hole, we'd get some trainees to rub a little powder on their fore heartening them it would give them extra energy or some other bull ?. Poor sods would have a massive head ache.We always had to take the mick. Like I once told Antonio. Life down the pit was based on bullying. But a type that toughened the younger lads, I myself went through this too. My own mistake was to wipe my sweaty fore whist stemming up. Yes it's a throbing head ache, never made that mistake again.

did you have to get special permission to go and explore the mine as it is still operating...wonder how many hundreds of tons of weight are on those props...when you are in the tunnels how do you record which way you went so as to get out again....what are those wand lamps you are using...is that a modern plastic water pipe...has anyone ever mapped the tunnels...truly amazing when you think of the tools they had at that time...
Border Reiver the mine stoped operating not many years ago ! There is no official access granted by the owners to mine explorers ,so we go in at our own risk!, the props would stand no chance if the earth above caves in ! I figure the props where more to check for movement or subsidence, the key when you navigate a mine is looking back at every turn , this way you memorise the way out ! , if in doubt you’ll remember leave markers such as timbers of rocks you can use them as arrows , always pointing the way out ! The light wand we use it’s a YONGNUO YN360II Pro LED Video Light , you can buy them on EBay for £100 👌🏼👌🏼🔦

We look back often to know where we came from , sometimes in more complex mines we leave markers in the form of stones or sticks !

I came here to respond to a comment that the dynamite was actually fake and planted; so that is probably a good thing. The other thing I wanted to comment on was that the stulls/props are literally there for the comfort of people who believe they are actually holding up the back. They aren't; at all! Those pitiful things are like trying to prop up bricks with tooth picks. We simply don't have many mines that project danger like that in Eastern Australia and i found that deeply disturbing.

They ùse birch because the bark doesn't rot for a very long time. The insides do though. Altho probably a lot slower than many other trees.
