  • This is a step-by-step instructional video to remove and replace an alternator in a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country 3.3 Litre. It should be applicable to all Generation V Chrysler/Dodge minivans with similar layout.

Thanks! Did this today in less than an hour. Not sure I would have given this a shot had I not seen how relatively easy and quick it would be. Big ups and appreciation!

To anyone replacing their Dodge 2008-2011 Grand Caravan alternator, please look at this video carefully around 2:09-2:30 where he explains how to use the tension remover tool. There is a female 3/8"drive receptacle that you must feel for with your fingers and the tool. As he says, you must remove the air filter assembly first in order to get a proper angle on the tensioner 3/8" drive receptacle. This will save you untold time and hassle. I bought the tool for $25, and it saved me about an hour and much unneeded stress. Thanks for this video. It saved me money and time.

Glad you found this useful, and I'm sorry that I forgot to explicitly show how the tensioner tool went in. My goal was to try and show everything during the process. Oh well, perhaps next time. I have to work on the brake rotors on the same van.
I was able to get the tool at Harbor Freight for a little less (using their 10% coupon).

Stan Blackburn I'm having trouble with the tensioner, I rented the tool from the auto parts store but it only seams to turn the bolt and not releasing the belt.

There shouldn't be a bolt...did you resolve the issue?

Good job I guess the tensioner bar may be something I'll buy tomorrow as I have this to do on my 08 Town and country Touring addition

Dr. with prices rising I'm doing my own work. Just the easy stuff. This was so informativeand detailed I loved it. Most channels assume that you know things. I learned a lot. Now if you can do the bank 1 o2 sensor video that would be wonderful!

One brief thing that got missed in here:
To remove the smaller wires below the main wires on the alternator itself, you must pull out the red plastic clip and then squeeze the plastic below it to release a catch that is holding the plug onto the alternator. I haven't seen that step shown or listed in any videos about this. It is kind of glossed over at the 4 minute mark in this video when he says "disconnect the wires" before fast forwarding.
Other than that, this whole thing was quick and easy. I did this with my 9 year old so that he could get some experience under the hood of a car. It took about 20 minutes to disconnect everything except that one wire, 40 minutes to disconnect that one wire, and 15 minutes to re-assemble and test the whole thing when we were done.

Sorry for that...I should have covered it.

Hope you are still around after 5 years to read this! My job stopped because I couldn't figure out that connector and I didn't want to break it off. Even with the the red clip slid out revealing the black tab, it came off a bit on the tough side. It took a little jiggling.
Your comment got me going again. Thanks

Dr. Silverman!! Thanks for posting this video. It was very instructive and useful. The alternator on my 2010 Town & Country went out on us last night as we were driving home. This video helped me move forward with changing the alternator myself. Thanks again for posting the video. All the best to you and yours.
