2008/Mk. V Chrysler Town & Country Valve Cover Gasket Removal and Replacement

Here it is, folks...the "holy grail." If you own a Mk. V (2008-2016) Chrysler Town & Country (or it's Dodge equivalent), you've probably noticed that there isn't any good set of instructions let alone a video showing you how to do this incredibly easy project. Until now. Here it is. I'm not (very) proud of it, as I forgot to start taping from the beginning, but if you watch it through, you'll f...

This is a step-by-step instructional video to remove and replace an alternator in a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country 3.3 Litre. It should be applicable to all Generation V Chrysler/Dodge minivans with similar layout.

    Thanks for this video you saved me a fortune. The Previous owner put freaking permatex making it really difficult for me to repair, and the permatex got in my piston arms and got yanked in causing a hole in the valve gasket causing a massive leak and burn in the front one and loss of oil pressure and deceleration overall. Hopefully this helps.

      No. The only reason you have to remove the plug wires in the back is because they block access to removing the rear valve cover gasket. The plugs bolt into the block below the valve covers (at least on the Mk. V 3.3 engine). Good luck with your project.

    Please add showing how you removed the PCV valve. That’s the hardest part, which is what we need, which you skipped, and you didn’t show it, and now we don’t know what to do, so that’s not very helpful, and this is typical of how to videos that don’t really show you how to do it. Thank you have a great day

    • @drsilverman
      @drsilverman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are very difficult to replace (there are other videos that show this being done). If you break the housing that it sits in (and this is very likely to happen), you have to replace the valve cover (they come with a new PCV valve installed).

    Good info, though the video editing could be a bit fine-tuned. You do convey what somebody thinking about doing this would need though. Questions: Just to confirm, the original rubber grommets need to be "cut off" and replaced with new ones? Did you not use any RTV in the gasket grooves? Thanks

    • @drsilverman
      @drsilverman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you should never use RTV on these gaskets (I know, it's weird). Ask at the parts store. As for the rubber grommets, they're most likely toast anyway. You don't want to have to do this job again for a while, so make sure that your gasket kit has new grommets included before you cut the old ones off.

  • @hotsaucehimself
    @hotsaucehimself 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Doc. Planning to do this soon. I also have a bad PCV valve I'll replace and would also like to do spark plugs and wires. Are the rear spark plugs accessible with the rear valve cover off? or would more need to come out, like the intake manifold?

    • @drsilverman
      @drsilverman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do the spark plugs "blind" if the engine is cool and you have a good feel for working over the engine and "backwards." Just be careful when threading the plugs to avoid cross-threading them (they should go in very easily).

  • @scottbiddle9432
    @scottbiddle9432 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    One brief thing that got missed in here: To remove the smaller wires below the main wires on the alternator itself, you must pull out the red plastic clip and then squeeze the plastic below it to release a catch that is holding the plug onto the alternator. I haven't seen that step shown or listed in any videos about this. It is kind of glossed over at the 4 minute mark in this video when he says "disconnect the wires" before fast forwarding. Other than that, this whole thing was quick and easy. I did this with my 9 year old so that he could get some experience under the hood of a car. It took about 20 minutes to disconnect everything except that one wire, 40 minutes to disconnect that one wire, and 15 minutes to re-assemble and test the whole thing when we were done.

      Hope you are still around after 5 years to read this! My job stopped because I couldn't figure out that connector and I didn't want to break it off. Air and fuel filters? Also, and this is a tip that will help with any tune up, you can always use an old spark plug boot to start the new sparkplug

    • @drsilverman
      @drsilverman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fuel filter is built-in to the fuel pump and is not a part of regular service. The air filter is fairly simple to replace (look at the housing and you'll see this).

      Stock Champion spark plugs (from NAPA), plug wires (also from NAPA), copper anti-seize paste (also from NAPA). Basically, that's it. Have you ever performed a tune-up (or removed plugs) before? The most important thing is to get a good start so you don't "crossthread" them.

    To anyone replacing their Dodge 2008-2011 Grand Caravan alternator, please look at this video carefully around 2:09-2:30 where he explains how to use the tension remover tool. There is a female 3/8"drive receptacle that you must feel for with your fingers and the tool. As he says, you must remove the air filter assembly first in order to get a proper angle on the tensioner 3/8" drive receptacle. This will save you untold time and hassle. I bought the tool for $25, and it saved me about an hour and much unneeded stress. Thanks for this video. It saved me money and time.

      Glad you found this useful, and I'm sorry that I forgot to explicitly show how the tensioner tool went in. My goal was to try and show everything during the process. Oh well, perhaps next time. I have to work on the brake rotors on the same van. I was able to get the tool at Harbor Freight for a little less (using their 10% coupon).
