Where I live it would be illegal for me to tow anything other than maybe a smart car behind this truck due to weight. There is a MAX weight limit, and a truck like this is usually just within that limit. Some places have exemptions on the weight limits for tow trucks, some will heavily enforce the weight limit. Give me a break.
Nice work guys, but I’m guessing there was no certified airframe and power plant mechanic available to assist you or to advise you as to the aircraft manufacturers lifting and shoring instructions for the aircraft. The airframe at the position of your rear lifting straps is not designed to take a compression load, as applied by your straps without the use of a spreader bar across the top of the fuselage. I cannot speak for how you rigged the front end as I could not tell from the video, but if any straps where routed around any part of the engine bearer that’s a definite nope, the engine bearer is specifically designed to only take the load of the engine and the dynamic load applied to it by the engine and propeller any other load applied to the bearer can cause serious damage to it.
The gentleman in the video was a mechanic for this company and the lady was the owner. They were the ones that advised me where to lift from, so it was not done at random. I know how tricky these can be and have done recoveries to clean up the mess that others have made from improper lifting. After assessing everything we decided the spreader bar was not necessary and got it transported safely without any damage.
The plane could have been turned sideways simply by moving the front landing gear direction and manually pushing on the front of the wings. That is how we do it at the airport all the time. We do. Have a “jig” that attaches to the front wheel and then one person can roll it around.
Updated: The plane is a Beechcraft Bonanza. length 27'6", wingspan 33'6" so definitely wider than it is long! ... Guessing that the plane's wingspan is greater than the width of the tunnel. As it is, it only cleared the tunnel with a few feet to spare, and arriving the the airport with a few feet of wing missing on each side would not have made for a pretty picture!
@@ronjohnson9507 My information came from the news reports at the time (3 months ago), so that is what I based it on for length and wingspan. Since your comment, I have done some research and found that that aircraft is actually a Piper PA-28-181 Archer II so we were both wrong! To save you the trouble, the tail number is N80853 ..... By the way, you might want to consider using a less troll-like name, people like myself tend to ignore comments from names like that!
Yeah I understand why there's not a wheel lift on the back of that truck is to help with the weight of the truck you have to be underweight for that truck in your state
Thanks! In hindsight, it would have been cool to have the helmet cam on during the transport, but I was "in the zone" and focused on the escort to make sure nothing went wrong. I just have that cool tunnel shot.
@@PepesTowingService Thanks for the prompt reply. Another option would be to just mount a camera in the truck between the two seats, like Ron Pratt does in his videos.
@@1nm1 I tried that but I'm not a fan of all the talking. @@PepesTowingService I understand. The "highlights" is what is typically shown in the various TV shows, etc, while the mundane, day to day actions that account for much of the work are excluded, due to their repetitive nature. Regardless, thank you SO MUCH for the videos you do upload, I enjoy them very much!!!
You don't get to make that call in emergency landings this way. We should up fast to clear the intersection. When you allow people to make calls like this, you don't know who you are dealing with. For example, what if their team to remove the wings was hours away? You can't leave this there that long.
I thought that they take the wings off before moving the plane. Had to be really lucky to move it whole. Who paid and if i's available how much? Great job.
@@f0rumrr That kind of move would never happen in the NY area. Our roads are narrow and congested. I assume the plane came down near the airport. Can you imagine an emergency landing on the Long Island Expressway or the Grad Central Parkway?

"doesn't weigh a lot"... yea, but it probably cost more than the tow truck! (laughingly said). just fyi, cross the straps in an x under the fuselage at the wings and the plane will balance itself (the balance point is just behind the spar on any small plane).
Nice job by Pepe's! You had a twist in the left-side cable but I don't suppose it was a problem with a light load and a short lift. Was the lady with the backpack the "pilot" who landed on the wrong "runway"?

They told us where it's at is fine and to just make sure it's behind the white line. Taking an extra 60 seconds to swing it in back of me is more time than re-positioning both trucks? Give me a break.
Love your flag. Thank you for your hard work Patriot!
“ I want to fly like a eagle”....... good job.....
Pretty cool, but do me a favor and give the flag a proper disposal. It looks more like a grease rag.
@I Am Sekou That's a shame.
Heard this on afc now the video pretty awesome hook
Space Force One is safe again!
Well you don't see that everyday lol
The lady looked liked she was a pain in the ass
how many guys would it have taken to lift the airplane onto the trailer ?
The pilot put that on his AAA card
Ladies and gentlemen, where approached for landing out of fuel, please tilt up your back seats stop smoking and call Pepe's towing for recovery.
The plane could have been turned sideways simply by moving the front landing gear direction and manually pushing on the front of the wings. That is how we do it at the airport all the time. We do. Have a “jig” that attaches to the front wheel and then one person can roll it around.
Good job guys, but why transversely? Worried that the trailer would become airborne with a fore-aft arrangement?
Updated: The plane is a Beechcraft Bonanza. length 27'6", wingspan 33'6" so definitely wider than it is long! ... Guessing that the plane's wingspan is greater than the width of the tunnel. As it is, it only cleared the tunnel with a few feet to spare, and arriving the the airport with a few feet of wing missing on each side would not have made for a pretty picture!
Thanks! Mystery solved.
@@daveyburgess Man you are good!
@@daveyburgess that bonanza is a piper cherokee
@@ronjohnson9507 My information came from the news reports at the time (3 months ago), so that is what I based it on for length and wingspan. Since your comment, I have done some research and found that that aircraft is actually a Piper PA-28-181 Archer II so we were both wrong! To save you the trouble, the tail number is N80853 ..... By the way, you might want to consider using a less troll-like name, people like myself tend to ignore comments from names like that!
Yeah I understand why there's not a wheel lift on the back of that truck is to help with the weight of the truck you have to be underweight for that truck in your state
That was interesting...you guys are pros...👍😀😎
Appreciate the compliment!
Awesome video! :-)
Do you have a video showing the entire (most) of the transportation to the airport???
No offense to Ron, his videos are great but personally I can't sit through an hour video showing every little thing, including 20 minutes in setting up and putting stuff away. In this case, that would have worked perfect. Going forward I will definitely consider it.
@@PepesTowingService I understand. I am not a "talker" myself, so I wouldn't be able to fill time either LOL
All I will say in conclusion is seeing the action even WITHOUT talking would be most entertaining for some viewers, like myself.
The "highlights" is what is typically shown in the various TV shows, etc, while the mundane, day to day actions that account for much of the work are excluded, due to their repetitive nature. I think many people that watch these sorts of videos on TH-cam look for the realness of those types of videos, since it shows more closely what the work is ACTUALLY, REALLY like.
Regardless, thank you SO MUCH for the videos you do upload, I enjoy them very much!!!
@@1nm1 No problem, I'll definitely keep that in mind for the future.
I bet that fiery was the kid who stood right in front of the TV.
Great job!
Do the wings not come off for transportation? Or would that have taken too long?
You don't get to make that call in emergency landings this way. We should up fast to clear the intersection. When you allow people to make calls like this, you don't know who you are dealing with. For example, what if their team to remove the wings was hours away? You can't leave this there that long.
How much was the tow ?
We charge our contracted hourly rates. I'm not sure I can say the exact amount, but it was close to $3k.
I thought that they take the wings off before moving the plane. Had to be really lucky to move it whole. Who paid and if i's available how much? Great job.
The owners of the plane most likely paid.
@@f0rumrr That kind of move would never happen in the NY area. Our roads are narrow and congested. I assume the plane came down near the airport. Can you imagine an emergency landing on the Long Island Expressway or the Grad Central Parkway?
@@steveschlackman4503 I live in the Seattle area...
Steve Schlackman there was one on the i87 in the Bronx a couple years ago. I got a video of it sitting on the highway but not sure how they transported it.
@@Acepilot2k7 I live in Far Rockaway just across Jamaica Bay from JFK. Keep them on the runway please.
Iam suprised you didn't use a spreader bar
"doesn't weigh a lot"... yea, but it probably cost more than the tow truck! (laughingly said). just fyi, cross the straps in an x under the fuselage at the wings and the plane will balance itself (the balance point is just behind the spar on any small plane).
Why didn't you just raise the plane, drive trailer out and sit the plane down there??
Green Hornet More of a show haha
@@fawnz14 LOL! I stated a few times already, but once we parked, they wanted the plane behind the white line for traffic.
How many truck do they have
You have to use a colored edge black or white for your texts....
When the plane's on the trailer, pilot says "these runways are short, but they sure are wide"

should have put the plane diagnal (at a angle) on the truck bed?
What's that going to do?
It would be good if you didn’t use yellow test. Not everyone has perfect vision with good contrary perception.
i got to do this 2 times in 1 day at X49 . load of bad gas and i was the only guy with a 35 feet flat bed trailer
Sounds like a bad ass day. Did they allow you to transport it regular?
Why did you have to load it sideways? I know the police said you had to but why
If it was loaded facing forward the wings could catch wind and the plane could try to take off.
Width reasons for transporting to the airport.
My guess is the wingspan is greater than the length of the plane. Makes for a narrower load this way.
Why did you guys get a rotator without an underreach? Just curious.
It's California, you wouldn't be able to tow shit with it anyway. We do an insane amount of recovery work and this rotator is just for those calls.
@@PepesTowingService Interesting, thanks for the reply!
Nice job by Pepe's! You had a twist in the left-side cable but I don't suppose it was a problem with a light load and a short lift. Was the lady with the backpack the "pilot" who landed on the wrong "runway"?
Close, she was the owner!
Emergency landing is happening quite often these days,it seems like them things are so wide to be transported on a trailer, seems like airlifted with one them cargo hellicopters and taken to the nearest airport would be the best way to go , just my thought
