hey scotty,,. i just did the same job ..only the retaining clip looks like it broke on the way out.. i got the big peace but never found the tips ,, 02 accent gl 1.6,, what would you do?.
Thank you Scotty. You made this look so easy! Your video helped me tackle this myself and as a woman the only thing I didn't have was some of that elbow grease RUGH! The only extra tip I would say is leave the nut on when hammering the new axle into the transmission. Otherwise you risk damaging the threads.
I love that there are people like you out there that make these kind of videos. It reduces so much anxiety with the pleasant way you address car issues. Its so helpful for the average woman who has limited knowledge about cars and would like to to understand whats going on.
Great tip on putting grease on the end of the axle. I would extend that to put grease or better yet anti-seize on the splines on both ends of the axle to make removal easier next time. Rusted in cv axles are no fun. Also I wouldn't recommend to anyone to hit the tie rod on the castle nut like that. You can easily bend a prong on the castle nut and you'll never get it back on. Hit the steering knuckle where the tie rod goes through it instead. Works great and no risk of damaging anything.
Hey Scotty, army of one, be all you can be!!!!, i searched for this problem in my car and guess what?, found your video and my car is also a red hyundai accent....how crazy. I really like how you keep your narration to a minimum and spot on....thanks man
Thanks a million Scotty, you just pin pointed that noise my wife was complaining about... I have ordered the parts and will be changing out the cv shaft tomorrow. I was surprised how cheep the part was too. Good day sir and God bless.
I have a Acura TL that makes this annoying noise! Sounds like the Wheel of Fortune wheel. Thanks, now I have a fun, learning experience to tackle this summer.
Love your videos scotty am fairly mechanically minded but sometimes I need a bit of help. Luckily you explain and demonstrate in a way even someone with little experience can understand
Hi Scotty, I think your videos are awesome! You explain and demonstrate well.....I'm a woman comptiplating doing this myself...I believe I can now after seeing your thorough video. Thank you, Annemarie C.
Go for it. It takes patience. I did it myself, after watching YT videos and ordering a shop manual. I also bought an impact driver, which has saved me numerous struggles. Good luck!
Nice tutorial. This was the first problem I had to fix on my beloved Suzuki. I paid only ~16 bucks for the left outer joint. It has been working perfectly for 8 years and 50000 km. If somebody wants to replace only the joint it is highly advisable that throw away the no name grease that comes with the kit and replace it with some quality lubricant. (The inner joints need ordinary EP2 grease - eg.: Total Multis EP2 - without any solid additives and the outers need lubricant that has MoS2 improver eg: Total Multis MS2.)
Thanks my man i tried removing the outer cv and the whole drive shaft popped out, because of this video im confident that ill get it fixed before the end of the week 👍
Hi scotty kilmer I Love to watch your video's But i dont have a car because i'm only 15 i have to wait 3 years more than i can get a car And then i go fix it my self :D Srry for bad english i'm comming from holland
Scotty, heads up: some cars don't have two CVs on each axle. On them, there's one CV outboard, and inboard is a tripod bearing meshed into an inner driver cup with a boot covering the whole thing. The boot is held on with a big hose clamp. If your car's this way you will never pry the inner driver out of the transmission because there's something in there holding it in. Saabs are like this. To get this out, when you get to the stage where you'd have to pry the CV out of the transmission, just loosen the hose clamp and tug. It'll come right off. Make sure you're not under it so you don't get conked in the head when one of the bearings falls out of it - and at least one bearing will fall out. To put it back in, pack the inner driver with CV grease, work the tripod bearing in, reassemble your front end, and then slide the boot into place and clamp it on.
Great video! I tried replacing the CV axle on my 95 Subaru Legacy last week and could not get the lower control arm to separate. Whacked it with a sledge like you did, heated it with a torch, tried pretty much everything. I even put the bolt on loosely like you did there and jacked the car up, then dropped it but it still wouldn't budge!
Love the Vids you are great. I have to ask about blooper videos and if you ever thought of making like a blooper from the years passed. I work at a dealership and everyday someones boliing over about fingers smashed or something is a pain to fix. It would be soo funny to see you get pissed off at a car or a mishap. Cheers Live free!!
Scotty thank you so much! I recently started working on my car and just found your channel again right when I needed it. I was terrified my transfer case or front differential had blown up, but thankfully it’s only the CV joint.
On some cars you can just drop the ball joint out and then your whole wheel assembly can be pushed to the side and the CV axle will slide right out. This can actually be easier at times as apposed to the method shown in this video. and when you are done you won't need an alignment. However if you have an old rusted car, then getting the ball joint out can be a pain in the behind.
So what do I do if I don't have a transmission dipstick. Looked ALL over the engine and couldn't find it. Took it to a couple local mechanics and even they couldn't locate it. Dealership told me it's entirely sealed? What's up with that? Any help Scotty?
yep, the evil engineers make most of them that way so they have to be serviced at the dealer or by a pro mechanic with special tools and more knowledge. It's all about MONEY.
Alot of vehicles just have a fill hole with no dip stick. You just remove the plug and stick your pinky in there to check the level. If the fluid is right at the hole, you're good. But some cars, especially German cars, have fully sealed transmissions that only a transmission shop or dealership could charge you a fortune to service.
VW transmissions in the past had 2 plugs, one at the diferential to drain and other in the the back of the transmission to fill. The procedure is simply fill till it starts leaking from the filling hole. Its that simple, no need for a dipstick.
Great video. I'm diagnosing a popping/knocking noise from my front suspension/steering area. Had the sway bar links replaced before, so now I'm leaning towards the axles or shocks.
Look at the label at 3:36 smart guys. Pause and zoom in and you'll see it's a bottle of Pentosin ATF! Transmission fluid, kiddies. Observe before making asses of yourselves.

Hands down the easiest to follow video I have ever watched on a cv joint replacement... I just wished I would have found it before I already replaced them! ha ha
Hey Scotty Kilmer how much do you think this repair would run me? I dont really have the tools or the time to make the repairs myself most of the time, but ive been watching your videoes for about a year now and i love how informative your videos have been. I don't want some mechanic to over charge me

great video again scotty although long as people remember when reassembling the cv nut that on most vehicles there is a torque spec that needs to be in place so it doesnt ruin the wheel bearing/hub assembly
Looking at the color of the trans fluid, it needs to be replaced. I did learn one thing from what Scotty shows and that is to put grease on the end of the axle before putting it in the transmission. I have been fixing cars for 30 some years. First things major that I did was make a new wiring harness for the engine on a 64 chevy after the thing caught fire due to carburetor problems. The float was stuck, and flooded the engine and poured fuel all over the top of the engine. There are few things that I can't fix, but just as Scotty said in his videos about mistakes that he has done in the past. I have done the same thing and that is taking on jobs that are not worth my time, and I would be better off rejecting them (or as a former boss said don't say no just quote a high enough price to make it worth your trouble.)
Damn your the best Scotty. Always appreciate you beaming us up your great technical expertise and DIY repair tips. You're easy to listen to and always right-on in layman's terms. Keep-up the great work Scotty. We love you !!
Thanks a lot Scottie,I have the same grinding noise while turning and driving, so I did just that and replaced both axles.. ONLY THAT IT STILL MAKE THE GRINDING NOISE WHILE TURNING AND DRIVING with the new front axles 😢😢😢... Any advice would be appreciated 👍🏽😅
Wow my 95 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme is making this noise. At first it was only when i turn corners. Now it does it while just accelerating period. Im glad i found this video i couldnt for the life of me figure out that noise.
I fixed this once on the Mercedes c300 2009 model, the section thats in the transmission is actually hard to get out especially when the car is only 1-2 foot off the ground with minimal space to move. What worked for me is I hit a piece of wood with a hammer and the vibration that transferred knocked it out
I have now watched 3 videoes from you and i love them BUT, when u lose the tire rod you do it diffrent every time... 1. video you use a puller, 2. video you use a tie rod spreader and 3. video you use the simple hammer/punch on the bolt... Are they all evenly good or is there one you prefer the most?
there are many ways to skin a mule, you do it with whatever tools you have. The puller of course works best, but it costs the most to buy a good puller
I replaced the driver side axel shaft on my 2005 Toyota Solara and at the end I got a surprise - the wheel it's not rotating. I wonder if I can have the right tip (advice) to avoiding this unpleasant surprise. Thank you so much in advance!
Thanks a lot! This exactly happens in my case, but only when you turn to the right, it also can be heard when you shift gears(i mean when you let off the gas).

Yeah, Scotty's "Eh" even tells us what kind of torque we should apply bolting stuff on.
Yeah cars ant tht hard its them benz and god awful BMW's they have massive problems if they are 5 + years old.
You’re almost to manhood... 😂 when you can do it, then you are a young man.

Great job keeping it simple I am currently attending auto school and watching this videos keeps me ahead of the game by knowing the basics

he does, but I wouldn't trust myself to do it lol
Yeah this one in particular. It's excellent skilled labor what he demonstrates.
That's what happens when you do it for 50 years lol
i m looking for a cv axle left and right for a Suzuki alto 1999 1.0 benzine can some one help me find them

breaker bar or impact wrench is my advice. Take your time and remember how it goes back together n u will be fine. easy
job if u can follow directions

I like the sound effectd....tighten the strut mount...ARHHH......tighten the lug nuts...ARHHHH!!!
His grunts are how he measures how much torque to use. That's why he doesn't need a torque wrench. 👍
Thanks my man i tried removing the outer cv and the whole drive shaft popped out, because of this video im confident that ill get it fixed before the end of the week 👍
"And get the axle nut on nice and tight... RUGH! Put the tire back on and the lug nuts... UGH!"
Literally my favorite part of his Videos.
Haha I read that perfectly in his voice. Your transposition is on point. Take my genuine chuckle sir.
Don’t forget sometimes “YA GOTTA WIGGLE IT A LITTLE..... UHHHH!!” Not in this video but it’s my favorite Scotty-ism of all time 😂😂😂
Legend has it he doesn't need a torque wrench cause how much he grunts determines the right amount of torque needed for that operation. 👍
Scotty has so much experience lol he does everything with such ease. Every mechanic has there own way of working on cars.
you know you seriously love a channel when you turn adblock off lol
thank you, that's how I get paid so I will continue making these free videos for everyone
I hope i can find a mechanic like you who is very trustworthy
That was some strange looking transmission fluid you poured back in. Looked more like motor oil kinda?
It was motor oil I saw that too. Shhh
@@lukepecoraro8600 could be manual transmission. honda manual fluid is basically motor oil.

Alright, thanks Scotty!
I replaced the driver side axel shaft on my 2005 Toyota Solara and at the end I got a surprise - the wheel it's not rotating. I wonder if I can have the right tip (advice) to avoiding this unpleasant surprise.
Thank you so much in advance!
Great man and a great knowledgeable mechanic
Thanks a lot! This exactly happens in my case, but only when you turn to the right, it also can be heard when you shift gears(i mean when you let off the gas).
Nice video Scotty! But if I were to take it to a mechanic, about how much would it cost to get it fixed?
Thanks scotty you just solved my problem. I truly thank you!
Thank you Scotty .you are the best. Take care
