Jocko only spoke about peoples nurture: socioeconomic status, location of living, family surroundings etc. He didn't consider nature at all which is personality traits, genetics and the IQ you were born with. that stuff can be influenced but mostly can't be helped. he describes the hard workers and go getters but that's simply people who are disagreeable, high in openness, high in conscientiousness and low in neuroticism which is all simply the traits of a persons nature. from what i see i think his answer should be "mostly nature".

Im on the opposite side of the fence! I say it is BOTH! Nature & Nurture! We need to stop separating the two! I hear what Jocko is saying, about the choices we make in order to be successful, however I think the Nature VS. Nurture debate is about AFTER you make your choice, i.e. is it your genes that are going to carry you to your goal or is it your upbringing that is going to give you the edge? I personally think it's BOTH! Fat people have a hard time with running but if you can "Nurture" them or lead them to the goal it can be done and the people skinnier ones who are good at running can also be cut down and bullied out of meeting their goal! So it is a complex equation and both play an equal part in completing the goal you chose to pursue!
Long comment I know! But I CHOSE to finish it to the best of my ability! LOL

Yes I agree with what Jocko said, that we still have a choice on if we want to succeed or not. I didn't say he was wrong, I am just adding the fact, and not junk science there has been valid and reliable studies done on this, of how much genes impact who you are. But we are still left with a choosing what we do. Hence why I said it is a mix of nature and nurture.
