Never seen the Johnny show before, so surprised me to see this episode with the kid. It's a reference to an obscure sci-fi story called "It's a Good Life!" It's about a young boy in a mid-Western town who's born with God-like powers of telepathy and reality manipulation. The whole town has been teleported away from the rest of the world, floating in some featureless grey limbo, and all the citizens of the town are at the kid's mercy. Not necessarily an evil kid, but besides being sadistic, when he wanted to help his deeds could cause more harm than good. So everyone always acted and thought that "Life is good" so he wouldn't read their true thoughts and possibly hurt them. But when he did kill things, like a man who said he should never have been born (after turning him into some horrific abomination) he wished them into a graveyard in the cornfield. It's a pretty dark short story. And certainly something I'd be surprised to find referenced in a children's show.

The creativity and clever humor is extremely lacking these days. The most common type of humor is best described as "character does/is doing something, stiff shock face or some other face, sudden slap while announcing the slap, "wand attack, wand attack" without any enthusiasm, or a character spends about 1 minute making a facial reaction to a food they just ate or something they caused or just witnessed happened. The humor is dry, flat and stale. It's something that's not intended for everyone and unless you're someone who still has any attachment to the show because they watched it when it was airing, you're just not going to find it funny. The humor being found funny heavily relies on dedicated old fans with the mental impression firmly in them that it's still funny to them. The jokes have very little effort, there's no clever thinking that goes into them, a character could blow a raspberry looking with a stiff face after being told something serious and that's supposed to be funny.
This shows that you can do repeated comedy and land every time. I loose it whenever I hear the hillbilly music and the VCR trick. I didn't realize Timmy is voiced by Kevin McDonald, the voice actor best known for Peakley and Almighty Tallest Purple.
