    Hello, I have the AWU2 and the Fenix 6. I love both, the AWU2 is an amazing smart watch and a pretty good sport watch. Yet to seriously train, it is not as convenient as the Fenix which is really an amazing sport watch… and a poor smart watch 😊 On balance, for my current needs, the AWU2 is more adequate.

    Another great review. I appreciate your point of view and the insights you provide. I have been a long time Garmin user and a few months ago upgraded to the Epix Pro 51mm. Love this watch, however I own so many apple products that I have been on the fence about getting the Apple watch Ultra since V1. With every video you put out I get just a little closer. I do feel Apple has a ways to go with some of the options but for the average runner/fitness enthusiast I do feel the Apple watch would work just fine. I do have a question for you, I know the Apple watch has the touch screen and less buttons than the Garmin but can you disable the touch screen on the Apple watch? I do hear a lot about the inadvertent touches that stop workouts. Thanks for your work and your time. Love the insight and thoughts.

      The Apple Watches have a water lock that I recommend turning on when it's rainy out. I've lost a few activities due to my wet jacket sleeve mixing up stuff on the touchscreen. I´m with you on the race route feature being a strangely half-baked like a lot of Apple´s running features. No navigation and no routing based on a certain stat (pace, HR), no possibility to import a GPX.
    Also worth mentioning: running power without (automatic) running power zones (based on the correlation between HR and RP on flat surfaces, like Garmin and Polar do(1)), or intervals and fartleg without being able to see the last active split (like you mentioned), or any kind of map as a data page.
    Also worth mentioning for hiking or other outdoor activities: the strangely implemented backtrack feature (not into the workout app but into the compass app, without navigational features).
    Still have the AWU1 bc of the fall detection on motorcycles (hence the AW) and he battery life (hence the Ultra).
    (1) As a workaround, I have several workouts on the watch in which I set up alarms for my own power zones).

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Those are really good points Peter. It's odd that cycling has power zones that are automatically generated but running doesn't. 🤔 Lots of work for Apple to get to. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

    I’ve tried Garmin, Suunto, Polar and Apple Watch.
    For running, not having buttons to navigate the watch, it’s a really downer. In the summer, the sweaty hands, and in the winter, when wearing gloves, it’s difficult to navigate.
    Other minuses of the Apple Watch are the lack of mapping, inability to cancel a workout but keep the existing run going, etc…

      It's a little different that what Garmin offers. You can build custom workout with pace alerts, so it'll buzz and show an alert on the screen when you drop above or below the assigned pace. There is also a Pacer type workout which is set to just one pace for a distance and it'll show a ahead or behind animation. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. Thank you Hugo!!! I think Apple is aware of the battery life issue and yet they always seem to reference ‘all day’ battery life as if that all people want. The processor improvements on the AWU2 or Series 9 didn’t move the needle. Maybe a new display technology would help? 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • @martowl
    @martowl 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I ran the Bear 100 (100 mile Ultra) with an AWU1 and while you are correct about the 2 min GPS fix in the reduced GPS and HR mode, Apple is performing magic if you have your phone with you and offline downloaded maps. My track was near perfect to my amazement and surprise. My distance was spot on and my HR and calories were very close to a Suunto Vertical that I also wore. I was slow so 35h for a finish and no issues with battery.
    I agree with you about a non-optimal experience though, as that extreme low power mode restricts you to one screen. However, checking the pace and elevation gain with my Suunto showed they were very close.
    So, I think it can work with some compromises.

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow, nice work on finishing that hundo!!! 👏🏻 And this is great feedback for people to hear about. You should check out Dave Dillion's channel @ChaseTheSummit He does ultras and tries different watches frequently. I'm really glad to hear the GPS track was solid even in the reduced mode. I'm a big fan of the Enduro 2 and I think that'd be my go to watch if I wanted something for a 100 miler but the AWU is super nice for the 99% of the time in life that you're not out on the trails. And like you said, it's really not that bad in those cases either. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

    The one thing I don’t hear anyone talking about is the lack of data field customization. Workout app or Strava app only have average pace and lap pace 🤔 ( At Least on the SE2 I’m testing) I do like the Apple Watch for its smart features such as getting a snapshot of who’s at my ring camera, but as a running watch it’s lacking unfortunately… So capable and so close, but it just doesn’t show me what I want

    Apparently everything is personal perception. I purchased the AWU2 about 2 weeks ago and I’m not a big macho man and to me this watch is not a big boy like so many TH-camrs claim it to be nor it doesn’t feel heavy either at least to me. But to each their own.
    This Apple Watch should have been called like “Apple Watch Pro” instead of the falsely marketing stunt and very likely customer feelings about it would have come across much more positive for everyone.
    I’m into mild work outs mainly 4-5 miles of mixed walk and running 4days per week. I do sleep with it and doesn’t bother me at all maybe because I got accustomed to my previous Nike Series 7 Apple Watch.
    I only keep important notifications on all else is off because battery is subjective from user to user but it is not the best option. I get about 3 days on mixed use. Overall, I’m happy and appreciative that I was able to buy it, because it is honestly a very expensive watch.

      In stopwatch, the action button can work to start and then as a split. Then you need to use both the right and left button at the same time to stop. Touchscreen for reset 😬 We have a lot of rain here so it’s not ideal.

    We did our own research on both Ultra 1 and Ultra 2. Verdict? The always on feature…THATS IT. I love Apple but if you’ve got the Ultra 1 don’t waste your money for the 2. And I’ve had the iPhone 15 Pro Max since it came out. I traded in from the 14 Pro Max. Verdict? NO NEED TO UPGRADE. The 14 of any version is the same for all 15 products. Here’s a fun fact: the same board and electronics used to make the iPhone since the iPhone 11 ALL have come from Samsung. Samsung sells Apple their electronics and designs. So basically, if you love Apple or your Galaxy, there is no real big difference. The first manufacturer that rolls out the clear/transparent wrap around wrist watch will be the front runner. One thing that Apple will begin using for the 16 is that they will give the user the ability to use the iwatch and iPhone to “satellite mode” to use in very remote areas. Something we should all consider having since we’re inching closer to a world conflict, so if anyone were to take over all cell phone capabilities, a sat phone is what you’ll need

    Running with an apple watch Ultra is no different than running with an Apple Watch 9,87,6,5,4,3,it is a watch you wear it on your wrist and you run jog walk or just go shopping. I have an Ultra 2 I have had a stroke so I don't run I walk with my dogs or by myself. So an Apple Watch be it an Ultra or one of the the other models an Apple Watch is good for anything and for everybody!!!!!!!!

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree for the most part. The AWU 1 & 2 both have multi-band GPS. So it' can connect to 2 types of satellite systems at the same time. This increases the accuracy of GPS. You'd probably only notice this in really tricky conditions like when you run along next to a rock face or in a city when running next to tall glass buildings. My experience has been that all Apple Watches after about the the Series 6 have really good GPS accuracy. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

    Let's put it this way. It's an APPLE WATCH. Unlike a Sunnto or Garmin which has a long extensive history when it comes to real world navigation. You're gonna spend upwards to a 1000 or so. Just get any SOLAR POWERED Garmin . You'll be a winner at the end in all fronts. Granted you're standing next to some Wannabe wearing an Apple Ultra. Yes. Wannabe. Or one of those people who are Just getting' into RUNNING. (thinking all this gear I just bought will improve my Running Ability.).
