By the time the '88 Bears defense reached the NFC Championship Game, they were devastated by injuries to key players. Most importantly, that of DE Richard Dent who dominated the 'Niners O-Line and harassed Montana throughout their Monday night matchup. Dent's "flying sack" of Montana was key in securing that game for the Bears. Dent had 10.5 sacks after 12 games and wound up an "all pro" despite missing the last 4gms of the season. The loss of Dent, in and of itself was enough to impact not only the Bears defensive game-plan, but to create offensive opportunities for Walsh & the 'Niners that would not have been present except for his absence. His replacement, DE Sean Smith was barely serviceable, out of the league a year later and in short, was NO Richard Dent. This left the Bears defense as "barely" a SHADOW of what it had been earlier in the season. Other key players were injured, but either continued to play like DE/DT Dan Hampton (knees) & ROLB Jim Morrissey (everything) or were ruled out altogether, like rookie CB Lemuel Stinson(knee). So, Dent was not the only injury problem for the '88 Bears defense, but he was without question the most prominent and impactful. Don't get me started on the offense, QB Mike Tomczak had a badly separated shoulder and Jim McMahon, although cleared to play was still dealing with arm/shoulder injuries from a week 9 matchup vs the Patriots. If you watch the game, most of McMahon's throws veer to the right due to his shoulder injury. Tomczak was put in to relieve McMahon, but by any standard, BOTH QB's should've been ruled out, while 2nd year man & 3rd string QB Jim Harbaugh started the game...
He will always be the Greatest Of All Time, no one could beat him, 4-0 in super bowls and he never had to smash his phone or be suspended for cheating!
@brokensystembrokentrust5047 Oh funny how you guys hate modern NFL but believe what the nfl says about the patriots? Last time I checked, Joe Montana confessed to his linemen spraying themselves on NFL network, funny you wanna bash Brady for supposedly “smashing his phone” or “cheating” when one what the NFL did was a violation of privacy (which all of you guys complain about when it happens to you) two, cheating? Jerry rice using stick em anyone? That even Cris Carter called him out on in a Twitter post.
@@345optimusprime Actually the Patriots Admitted to Spygate & Brady admitted to tampering with footballs. I dont have to believe the NFL I can just believe the Patriots
This version of the Bears defense was hardly the best, they were missing several key guys to injuries. Earlier in the same season (when healthy) this defense battered Montana to the point he couldn't finish the game & Steve Young had to try & mount a 4th quarter comeback. That being said I think Montana is the one of the greatest to ever play.
You're so right because I guess 7 Superbowls and 10 Superbowl appearances is not as good as 4 rings but I always thought that 7 was almost twice as much as 4 but then again maybe you're using a different type of arithmetic
@@nathandodge665 some of those rings were not legit, spygate, deflate gate, the first Superbowl they shouldn't even have been in as Brady fumbled the ball against the raiders but the pass was called incomplete which the refs blew that call. Yup Montana is the Goat
@@cloudysalsa Right, after Buddy Ryan left after the '85 season they were very good for a few years but just not the same without the brains as their DC.
You really can't argue Brady as the GOAT but I will say this; if he played during Montana's era instead of the age of the protected quarterback no way in heII he'd have the same longevity he's had. Montana took SO many big shots and injuries really hampered his career at the end.
@@345optimusprime say which part, exactly? Brady as the GOAT or the longevity comment? If you mean his longevity that's why they changed the rules in the first place, too many big name quarterbacks were going down with injuries. Anyways your "those dudes aren't legit" comment really makes no sense.
@billparker7410 Since people can’t read above fifth grade reading level. You were claiming that Brady couldn’t survive old football which is a fallacy. When I will throw Marino and Elway longevity. Plus when I said “aren’t legit” because you were discrediting players that Brady played against that talked about Brady toughness
@@345optimusprime oh I knew exactly what you meant, just couldn't believe someone would say something so naive. But you're right, Brady's longevity has absolutley nothing to do with all the rules put in place to protect quarterbacka.🙄And as far as all those defensive studs you named, that's exactly the point. they weren't allowed to cream quarterbacks like they were back in Montana's era. Now since you seem to have zero reading comprehension let me clarify, I'm not saying that's the only reason for his longevity, obviously the guys a freak, but to still be able to win a Super Bowl st the age of 43? Yeah get serious bozo!
No argument that Tom Brady was a great quarterback and have longevity like no other. But not only did Montana have a much shorter career, he played in an error when it was a lot more difficult for not only quarterbacks but wide receivers. This game is a great example. They stomped Chicago where the crowd noise was so loud they couldn't even call Audibles.
Montana's 4th behind Brady, Unitas & Marino. Eli Manning has more 4th quarter comebacks then him. If Brady had Taylor, Rice & a 1,000 yard back like Roger Craig, he would of had 10 rings.
@cloudysalsa Incredible! They were undefeated in a time when real men played. Their running offense was awesome. They say 73 Dolphins were even better and they lost 2 games, then won another Superbowl.
@@cloudysalsa True, but then again there were a lot of "pretty good" defenses throughout NFL history. "The Best Defense Of All Time" can only go to one defense, for one year. Actually, the 84 Bears defense was best as they had 72 sacks and allowed less yards a game with LB Al Harris & SS Todd Bell... The 85 Bears had the Fridge and Marshall had 64 sacks total... Joe Montana beat the 84 Bears 23-0 to go face Dolphins' Marino... Joe Montana isn't the GOAT ... Rams Matthew Stafford is the G.O.A.T. 😛 ...
The judge ultimately sentenced Richardson to a year in prison and an extended probation period, violation of which would result in Richardson serving the remainder of a 13-year sentence.
Montana is in the argument for greatest but Chicago didn't have the greatest defense of all time. The 46 was vulnerable to big plays. They won the SB one year because their luck at dodging bullets held out, except against Miami. It was, however, a great, exciting defense to watch.
My 85 Bears had the best defense of all time. In 88 the Bears had already lost otis Wilson, Wilbur Marshall, and Coach Buddy Ryan. Still a solid defense but the 85 Bears beat up on Montana and Rice.
Montana was good, but you can't just go by Superbowl/playoff success when ranking a quarterback, you have to use the stats as well. By the stats, he's great but not one of the best ever, probably not even as good as his successor Steve Young.
Yeah, I was doing real well taking money from idiots in a 3k tent city with the 91 Redskins in Desert Storm, until Montana came along and screwed it up in the Wild Card round.
Antonio Brown is probably the closest you’ve come to Jerry Rice in the modern era. But overall people don’t realize that Jerry for 2 decades was the most feared and potent offensive weapon in the NFL. Certainly in the 90’s rookie Moss.
Look am Steelers fans since 1995 yes he was great among the greatest until his mouth got him in lots of trouble now RB 'Bell came out few years back an said it was he fault nobody else also he did admit to myself tht he let team do but we all forgave him he is bouncing back tht took heart for ' bell to say but for AB am not feeling sorry for him

Montana is the GOAT of QB’s but the ‘88-‘89 Bears was not their best defense. Buddy Ryan was no longer the DC. That season the Bears lost at home 31-7 vs Vikings, lost at New England 30-7, lost at LA Rams 23-3, lost at Minnesota 28-27 in final regular season game.

Tomczak was put in to relieve McMahon, but by any standard, BOTH QB's should've been ruled out, while 2nd year man & 3rd string QB Jim Harbaugh started the game...
great info, thanks
He will always be the Greatest Of All Time, no one could beat him, 4-0 in super bowls and he never had to smash his phone or be suspended for cheating!
lol, no asterisks next to Montana's championships
Only 2 goats in my humble opinion. Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana. Both 4 and 0. Never lost a Superbowl. T Brady has more but, he's not a goat.
Terry numbers don't measure up
Tom Brady is the real (GOAT)
is it because he has the most championships?
I remember this game as if it was yesterday, & when Football was Football.... & to think that Minnesota wasn't even on the radar screen.
10 years from now NFL will be flag football

Just realized the best eyeball-to-eyeball was Craig vs Singletary!
Craig was underrated
This version of the Bears defense was hardly the best, they were missing several key guys to injuries. Earlier in the same season (when healthy) this defense battered Montana to the point he couldn't finish the game & Steve Young had to try & mount a 4th quarter comeback. That being said I think Montana is the one of the greatest to ever play.
valid point
la nueva regla es otro paso mas hacia el tocho bandera

Of course he's the goat, he NEVER lost a Superbowl, he was clutch when pressured. Bradybunch can't say either
I agree he is the goat
Tuck etc etc etc etc, like t sizzle said flop 😂😂😂
You're so right because I guess 7 Superbowls and 10 Superbowl appearances is not as good as 4 rings but I always thought that 7 was almost twice as much as 4 but then again maybe you're using a different type of arithmetic
Four rings to seven 😊
@@nathandodge665 some of those rings were not legit, spygate, deflate gate, the first Superbowl they shouldn't even have been in as Brady fumbled the ball against the raiders but the pass was called incomplete which the refs blew that call. Yup Montana is the Goat
This isn't the 85 Bears right? This is what 88? Buddy Ryan isn't there I believe right?
88 Bears still a great defense, not exactly 85 but pretty good
@@cloudysalsa Right, after Buddy Ryan left after the '85 season they were very good for a few years but just not the same without the brains as their DC.
Miami torched the 85 bears that Monday nite
Right, they gave up 38 points which was more than 5 times as much as the average game for the 69 Vikings.@@starwarsfan7740
You really can't argue Brady as the GOAT but I will say this; if he played during Montana's era instead of the age of the protected quarterback no way in heII he'd have the same longevity he's had. Montana took SO many big shots and injuries really hampered his career at the end.
great points, thanks
@billparker7410 Say that to Von Miller, Justin Tuck, Ray Lewis, Demarcus ware? By your logic those dudes aren’t legit.
2:50 Tecmo Super Bowl celebration screen?
Montana was and still is the best..................on defense sorry Bears.........76 Steeler defense was best ever.......look up what they did
No argument that Tom Brady was a great quarterback and have longevity like no other. But not only did Montana have a much shorter career, he played in an error when it was a lot more difficult for not only quarterbacks but wide receivers. This game is a great example. They stomped Chicago where the crowd noise was so loud they couldn't even call Audibles.
case for him to be the goat
Montana's 4th behind Brady, Unitas & Marino. Eli Manning has more 4th quarter comebacks then him.
If Brady had Taylor, Rice & a 1,000 yard back like Roger Craig, he would of had 10 rings.
Great info, I was nit aware of some of these
If I had to pick a quarterback Joe would be number one. Then staubach or elway.
Elway in my top 2 all time great, don't know why is not in the GOAT debate
Marino, in my opinion, was better. Stats show it. Elway didn't win his Super Bowls until he got a running back. Marino never had a running back
The best team was in the booth calling the game.
48ers ha great coaches too
49ers had a very stacked team...
they were pretty good, many players and coach hall of fame
Best defenses had to be 72 Dolphins and 76 Steelers.
I have never heard anyone talk about the 72 Dolphins defense as being best
@cloudysalsa Incredible! They were undefeated in a time when real men played. Their running offense was awesome. They say 73 Dolphins were even better and they lost 2 games, then won another Superbowl.
going undefeated is an incredible task, probably will never happened again
Some suspect tackling and pursuit by Bears secondary. Helped Montana a lot. Fixed?
LOL
What about the Giants beating him 49-3 in the 1986 divisional round LOL
can't win them all
When football was the real deal !! the 49ers were unstoppable!! not like the team we have today!! Kyle shanahan is a joke!
This was not “the greatest defense of all time”. That crown would go to the 1985 Bears. This was the 1988 Bears.
that was still a pretty good defense
@@cloudysalsa True, but then again there were a lot of "pretty good" defenses throughout NFL history. "The Best Defense Of All Time" can only go to one defense, for one year. Perhaps change the title of the video to - "Joe Montana Showing Greatness Against A Pretty Good Defense". 😉
Here's the game from 1985 where Montana played against the greatest defense of all time -
th-cam.com/video/E7S_EHtbHHQ/w-d-xo.html
Actually, the 84 Bears defense was best as they had 72 sacks and allowed less yards a game with LB Al Harris & SS Todd Bell... The 85 Bears had the Fridge and Marshall had 64 sacks total...
Joe Montana beat the 84 Bears 23-0 to go face Dolphins' Marino...
Joe Montana isn't the GOAT ...
Rams Matthew Stafford is the G.O.A.T. 😛 ...
Is this Tecmo Bowl?
thanks for stopping by
The real best D of all time was 86 Giants who knocked Montana out of the game. 1990 Giants D did that also.
I think you might be right, that Lawrence Taylor defense was special
Mike Richardson of the Bears. Would eventually get himself caught up in a murder in Phoenix, AZ.
thanks for sharing
The judge ultimately sentenced Richardson to a year in prison and an extended probation period, violation of which would result in Richardson serving the remainder of a 13-year sentence.
This isn’t the ‘85 Bears.
no one wants to give the 88 Bears respect
CHICAGO S DEFENSE MUST HAVE BEEN CONVINCED ITS 49ERS TURN TO WIN
QB was too much
Montana is in the argument for greatest but Chicago didn't have the greatest defense of all time. The 46 was vulnerable to big plays. They won the SB one year because their luck at dodging bullets held out, except against Miami. It was, however, a great, exciting defense to watch.
thanks for sharing
Twenty bucks says Joe Montana posted this video. 🤣
LOL
My 85 Bears had the best defense of all time. In 88 the Bears had already lost otis Wilson, Wilbur Marshall, and Coach Buddy Ryan. Still a solid defense but the 85 Bears beat up on Montana and Rice.
true statement, I agree
Montana was good, but you can't just go by Superbowl/playoff success when ranking a quarterback, you have to use the stats as well. By the stats, he's great but not one of the best ever, probably not even as good as his successor Steve Young.
so who is the best by the numbers
@@cloudysalsa Manning or Brady
Yeah, I was doing real well taking money from idiots in a 3k tent city with the 91 Redskins in Desert Storm, until Montana came along and screwed it up in the Wild Card round.
Montana broke a lot hearts
The best defense of all time! Jajaja

Y u thnk #80 is th best of Best Moss ,AB ,TO these guys not in the same class is #80
#80 all time best
Antonio Brown is probably the closest you’ve come to Jerry Rice in the modern era. But overall people don’t realize that Jerry for 2 decades was the most feared and potent offensive weapon in the NFL. Certainly in the 90’s rookie Moss.
Look am Steelers fans since 1995 yes he was great among the greatest until his mouth got him in lots of trouble now RB 'Bell came out few years back an said it was he fault nobody else also he did admit to myself tht he let team do but we all forgave him he is bouncing back tht took heart for ' bell to say but for AB am not feeling sorry for him
This video isnt showing the Steel Curtain aka the real best defense of all time.
I wouldn't say the '88 Bears were the best defense of all time--that's really stretching things... On an unrelated note, the Bears let Morrissey wear #51? (Butkus's number)
Blasphemy...

In terms on winning and overall best talent - Montana, Brady, Graham, Mahomes, Toss up between either Elway, Peyton of Unitas at 5
I have nothing to say. For once.
classic
Montana is the GOAT of QB’s but the ‘88-‘89 Bears was not their best defense. Buddy Ryan was no longer the DC. That season the Bears lost at home 31-7 vs Vikings, lost at New England 30-7, lost at LA Rams 23-3, lost at Minnesota 28-27 in final regular season game.
thanks for sharing
This like 1989 this isn't the best defense of All Time, it's the '85 Bears and they beat Joe Montana & the 49ers 26-10.
The 49ers are fast becoming the Buffalo Bills and the Minnesota Vikings. One more Super Bowl loss and 0-4! All star team the last two and the Chiefs beat em both times!!! What happened to Edward Debartolo jr?!
The 49ers have not had an it QB in a long time, that's probably the reason
This is '88, not '86. The Bears defense was great but not legendary.
still a pretty good defense
Joe was great. Brady still the goat.
not so sure
@@cloudysalsa Brady put Doug gaberial in the pro Bowl. Who's Doug gaberial? Exactly.
