This is Archie Manning’s best statistical performance of his career and it also summarizes the pre Tom Benson owned Saints in a nut shell.
@Jonathan Dee The One And Only Their potential relocation had nothing to do with Benson or the team’s performance, if I recall correctly. It was largely due to Hurricane Katrina and them playing several games there throughout the 2005 season; The Superdome and New Orleans’ future was uncertain at the time. It’s the same reason why there was speculation that the then-Hornets would relocate to Oklahoma City. Nothing was close to actually happening, though.
@Jonathan Dee The One And Only of course, every team has but in Tom Benson’s first full year the Saints made their first playoff appearance in franchise history after 21 years 1987. There was the famous Dome Patrol in the early 90’s that could’ve easily gone to the super bowl if they weren’t in the same division as the 49ers and had a good quarterback. Then they fired Jim Mora for Mike Ditka because the Saints couldn’t win a playoff game under him and that was really the only stretch of years the Saints where consistently terrible and it went for around 4 years. 2000-2005 where average years (45-48, 1-1 postseason) but they where always in playoff discussions except 2005 where they went 3-13. Since 2006 we all know how good the Saints have been, Tom Benson truly changed the franchise for the better. They didn’t almost relocate to San Antonio because they where bad they almost did because New Orleans got wiped out and they didn’t even know if it could recover or if would become a wasteland after Katrina, they would only be able to play at San Antonio for so long until the city would take them but thankfully they rebuilt the superdome just in time for week 3, 2006.

@@erocs9747 Dick Stanfel, interim coach... this was the 1-15 season. Dick Nolan was fired after an 0-12 start.
Yep, bad drafts, bad trades, bad hires marked the Mecom ownership reign of error! They hired Bum Phillips after he couldn't get the Oilers into the Super Bowl. But, he made some terrible trades. Trading 1st round picks in 83, 84, and 85 for Bruce Clark- who didn't sign with the Packers & came back from the CFL, Richard Todd- a washed up QB, and Earl Campbell-who was also washed up! Factor that into not having a #1 pick in 82- using that pick to take Dave Wilson, a bust QB, in the 81 Supplemental draft. They did have a #1 pick in 82, after trading Wes Chandler, but that pick was a bust- WR Lindsay Scott.

That first TD pass was like a lazer beam shot to the WR, while the second was thrown on point like a rainbow, dropping in over the head of the defender.
I'm sure Peyton and Eli have seen of a bunch of Archie games on tape Peyton probably went to a few but he was very young

Some fun facts about this game and the two teams:
Two weeks prior to this game, the Saints suffered a humiliating Monday night 27-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. In that game, fans started putting paper bags over their heads and calling themselves the “Aints”. After that game their head coach, Dick Nolan, who led the 49ers to success in the early ‘70s, was fired and replaced with Dick Stanfel. In 2005, his son, Mike Nolan would coach the 49ers until Week 8 of the 2008 season in which he was replaced by Mike Singletary.
Number 26 of the 49ers might be a familiar name to those who know the Bill Walsh head coaching tree because it is Ray Rhodes. Rhodes the next season, became an assistant defensive backs coach, coaching a secondary that featured three rookies: Ronnie Lott, Eric Wright and Carlton Williamson. Rhodes would be promoted to defensive backs coach in 1983 and held the position until 1991. Rhodes would leave with Mike Holmgren to Green Bay, where he became their defensive coordinator for two seasons before going back to San Francisco as their defensive coordinator for their 1994 championship season. After that, he became head coach of the Eagles, which he held until 1998 and the head man for the Packers in 1999. After that, he held various defensive coaching positions, including a four year stint with the Seahawks from 2003-2007 as a defensive coordinator, reuniting him with Mike Holmgren. His last coaching assignment was with the Browns as a defensive assistant from 2011-2012.
The next week after their debacle, the Saints would get their first and only win of 1980, a 21-20 victory over the New York Jets at Shea Stadium. After the season, the Saints hired Bum Phillips to coach the team. Phillips got the team almost to the playoffs in 1983; however, his magic couldn’t get them over the hump and after Week 12 of the 1985 season, he would resign.
When the Saints won their first division title in 1991, only one player remained from that dismal 1-15 1980 team: tackle Stan Brock. Brock was a rookie on the 1980 team and he along with cornerback Dave Waymer (also a rookie in 1980) were the only two players from the 1980 team on the 1987 team that made their first playoff appearance.

IIRC Dave Waymer joined the 49ers in 1990 to help their efforts at a three-peat. I think he also intercepted more Joe Montana passes than any other NFL player.

1980: SF had the worst secondary in the NFL.
1981 Draft, SF selected 4 defensive backs with four of the five first selections (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th rounds), which included Ronnie Lott and two other players to earn multiple pro bowl appearances (Wright and Williamson both in the pro bowl in 84 & 85). This a huge reason they went on a super bowl run and had a top defense.
They would have never won the SB, if they didn't trade for Fred Dean! His sacks and pass rush, took the pressure off that rookie secondary.
Wright and Williamson were the other DB drafted. But, that 4th pick, was a DL named John Harty- who was a bust. They passed up a HOF MLB, in Mike Singletary, who went within 2-4 picks of Harty.

1st round pick 8 Ronnie Lott CB USC. We know his story, but not every knows/remembers he played CB, SS and FS - all of the secondary positions.
[2nd round pick 5 NT John Harty [ not a DB]
2nd round pick 10 Eric Wright CB, Missouri - Pro Bowls in 1984 & 1985, played until 1990.
3rd round pick 7 Carlton Williamson Safety, Pittsburgh. Also pro bowls in 1984 & 1985 and played until 1988.
No 4th round selection
5th round Lynn Thomas CB, Pittsburgh. he is the one that didn't do anything.
Yes, the 49ers missed on Mike Singletary who went two places after Harty at 7 in the 2nd round. While that is obviously a miss, the 49ers had LBs in Keena turner and Jack "Hacksaw" Reynolds. What they didn't have was an anchor at NT. Harty played from 1981 to 1986 and started 42 games at NT. While not a HoF career, the 49ers used a Hybrid defense throughout the 80's and 90's that required a strong NT to anchor the line. it would have been amazing to have had Mike Singletary, but it wasn't like they selected a bust either.
I feel like the 49ers always find some crazy way to beat the Saints. No matter how good or bad either team is

hate to be a homer, but this is what kills me about Mahomes. I saw a mic'd up of P.Manning a few years ago. Every time he threw it there was an audible grunt. Ok fine I expect that.
I expect that Arch threw this ball, and Mahomes does to (heard it in last weeks mic'd up), without so much as a hefty exhale. Players on a different level.

Hey I'm not going to knock it. Do I like 'Homes?... Not really but I can understand the kind of skills some of these players have.
Besides... I just love watching a beautifully spiraled pass float across the field and dropped, with precision, into their teammates arms. However, I can appreciate it more in the older era of football rather than where the league is at nowadays. But that's probably just me.

I'm guessing this is also the game that made the 49ers want to get a certain defensive back from USC in the '81 draft. That secondary got torched.
They took 3 other DBs in that draft including both starting CBs from Pitt, together with Dwight Hicks they became one of the best secondaries in the league

Archie Manning was an elite QB and like Matthew Stafford in 2020 had an entire career not being surrounded by enough talent. Imagine if Archie actually had weapons.

pretty sure face guarding is when the defender isn't playing the ball or looking back while crowding the receiver. They still called it "pass interference". I've heard it used recently tho, but yeah you don't hear that anymore.

Good thing Bill Walsh had to be talked into drafting Montana in 79! One of the 49ers scouts has said he was the one who said Walsh should draft Montana. The story goes Walsh, who came from Stanford, wanted his Stanford QB- Steve Dils. But, this scout, his last name is something like Ranzanno, said he talked the 49ers brass into drafting Montana instead.
This Montana guy, I think he might have an overall Ok career in the NFL, 100 TDs, 25,000 passing yards for him, maybe 1 Super Bowl if they put talent around him.

I was at this game at 8 years old. We almost left at halftime but thank goodness we didn't! A historic game, and amazing family memory ❤️

Awesome. I have to say, while this is a little before my time, I like this presentation more than today's broadcasts. Today there is too much talking between they guys in the booth and some woman on the sideline and then some ex-referee then a panel of guys in a studio. Then there is all of the wak music ("Watin' all day for Sunday night...ugh!). Don't get me wrong, I really like a lot of those guys on TV. I have a subscription to NFL Game Pass and love it. I just find this broadcast a little easier on my senses.

I came to watch Montana. I left thinking that Archie Manning was amazing. I feel bad for the saints. They were winless. The thought they finally won a game. What a gut punch.

Saints fan here for over 36 years. Even though they're not in our division anymore, the 49ers will always be a thorn in my side. This game took place the year I was born. Pure example as to why they were the thorn.

The Montana Legend started when Joe was in college at Notre Dame. November, 1975....the Irish were down 30-10 to start the 4th Qtr on the road at Air Force. He engineered a 21 point 4th Qtr comeback and Notre Dame won 31-30.
I don’t mind watching old games but what makes it hard is not having the score up. Sometimes I wanna skip to where the comeback starts.

Hats off to Montana, but watching this reminds me the comeback was truly a complete team effort. Niners D held the line in the 2nd half.

I could imagine the young boys seeing Archie come home from from the Saints being disappointed most of the time. They learned from Dad that you have to play with organizations that are committed with good talent. Both of those kids grew up to be world champions!
Actually the game that started the legend was the "Chicken Soup" game in the Cotton Bowl with Notre Dame where his core temperature dropped to 96 degrees with hypothermia & had to leave the game. He stayed in the locker to get IVs, with heated blankets, and given hot chicken soup.. He came back at the end of the game losing 34-12 and threw 3 TDs in the last 8 minutes to win 35-34 with a walk-off TD. Sounds like a Hollywood movie, but it really happened. Look up the film, "Seven & a Half Minutes to Destiny." You will be inspired.
I saw quite a few before 1971. But the biggest hoopla game was Archie Mannings rookie debut in Candlestick Park, Nov 14 1971.
Saints vs 49ers in was Blacked out here in Northern California in 1980 because the game wasn't Sold out. However I had seen Montana come back from games several times before for The Fighting Irish. Anyone who knew Montana's reputation before this game wasn't surprised by the outcome.

@@ericsigersmith2831 There’s plenty of it around. They played there from 1964-83. Lots of games are on TH-cam of the Jets playing at Shea in the early 80s. It was a terrible stadium not designed for football at all but had its charm and was a real home field advantage more than they ever had sharing a stadium w the Giants as they have since 1984.

Montana's legend started while saving Bill Walsh's job at the time. DeBartelo was ready to move on from Walsh after what would have been an embarrassing loss to the Saints.
Montana basically saved a franchise with this comeback.
