    Sad news - I believe the exposure was off on the Canon AE-1 due to the battery running low. My apologies, I will ensure a fresh one is used for the next test. I hope you enjoyed the video regardless!

    Why canon ae1 seem to be a little bit "over exposed" it seems as the camera's light meter is off by some steps

    • @ByteReview

      I noticed a lot seemed that way! Will work on underexposing next time to see if that helps!

      @@ByteReview You can easily overexpose color film by a few stops, so i think that there's more a problem with the scan. My guess is that some of the information was cut off during scanning, but even a picture that is 3 stops or more overexposed should show much more detail in the sky than these.

    • @TheMistermike87
      @TheMistermike87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You would actually get way better results with portra 400 over exposed a couple stops or more. Way better to over expose any color neg film. Under exposing will give you brown cast and muddy shadows which you can’t recover.

    I see lots of comments talking about the over exposure of the Canon. That's really no big deal since film has a much higher dynamic range and you can reduce the exposure and still look natural.

      @@kayleedeering5121 it isn't "the vintage look" he messed up. It was user error and he even admitted it. Film can look very good, and in many cases it does, so much so that many digital cameras try to copy it. It's all down to the person behind the lens.

    What the canon does better is capturing the feelings of the moment, if our priority was the quality of the image we would only use DSLR. Film is much more about the feeling of taking a photo.
    I really dont like taking photos with a phone but I'm really surprised with the Pixel, I never thought it would have such a good camera.

      The fact of the matter is that in many cases SLR is better... This guy made a lot of mistakes when he was shooting. Overexposed images, out of focus, it's all down to the user tbh.

    really great video. In this day and age the where everyone has a smart phone digital is not a threat to analog anymore, because anyone can choose to use one over the other. It is simply a different way to express oneself artistically. It has become simply the difference between water color or oil in painting. One doesn't cancel the other out, but they both live in harmony with each other. I think no one can refute that digital show a much more accurate and higher resolution depiction of how it was on they day than 35mm film. But the analog pictures seem to have more soul and honesty about them. Maybe it is possible to simulate the effect in Lightroom or similar, but that feels like somehow cheating. In that case simply shoot the real thing in the first place. Bottom line if you want super accuracy and convenience then digital. If on the other hand you are trying to achieve a special look then analog. As final note :- It is kind of ironic that digital mediums (i.e the internet and hybrid workflow) are bringing about a revival of film. Without the possibility of sharing the results of analog or the simplicity of developing and scanning at him then I doubt whether there would be a revival at all.

    • @ByteReview
      @ByteReview  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words, and I agree - It's great that film is still around, and if that's thanks to digital, then that's fine by me. I only got into shooting film because of TH-cam anyway!

    Just seen this and I have to say in few of the Canon images focus was missed. Its obvious as the in-focus images really stand out. I have the same issue with my film cameras with manual focus lenses, I miss focus quite a lot even though I think its good, Its why I decided to opt for an auto focus film camera ( Pentax MZ-6), now my in focus losses are a lot less. Overexposure with film isn't such a bad thing, but bad focus is. Keep up the good work.

    • @ByteReview
      @ByteReview  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm considering using a point and shoot film camera (Ricoh GR1v) for my next test in this series, that's got auto focus so should help for sure!

    Exposure levels aside (because that factors into the result)
    The Pixel 3 is clearly a very sharp, focused and colourful image, you could say quite true to life.
    But.... that is quite boring in my opinion.
    You can clearly see here that with the exposure, grain, pastel colours and much softer image, that a film camera can make the mundane, look interesting, nearly dream like. So what if the exposure is "off" or the battery is low, or the colours aren't right. That is all the more reason that makes film instantly more interesting over the "auto" digital camera shot pictures.
    Each of the camera phone pictures are nice..
    But each of the film photos tell a story.

    Maybe this is why film will never be mainstream again. As a niche hobbyist fun project...sure but otherwise its unpredictable, unorganized and takes time and money to finally see the final results. In the age of instant technology where everything is handled so fast and at an alarming rate, something like taking a simple picture is what we take so granted now.

    Great comparison! I have an iPhone XS, but the pixel quality is really nice. As someone who owns both the AE-1 and a year subscription to VSCO presets, I can def say I still prefer AE-1's looks. It's just not as easy to throw around as an iphone. But it def captures something beyond just a digital picture.

    Based on my own experience, the film pictures are /under/exposed. For colour negative film, err slightly on the side of overexposure, and the converse for colour reversal (slide) film. Negative film is significantly more tolerant than reversal film. In addition to replacing the AE-1's battery, it would be worth checking the calibration of its light meter against something known to be reliable. I concur with other comments posted earlier that there is also something wrong with the scanning. Maybe the machine is incorrectly calibrated or out of focus.

    The Canon AE1 photos seem like they have more character. The photos look overexposed on the 35mm and film cameras had the original Instagram and cell phone filters. I love the character, emotion, and mood that classic film captures over digital. Digital is almost too perfect in where it makes photos look and feel fake.

      Because apparently it was not the intention of the author, happened to me too with a faulty Canon EF and with Portra 160 too, it can tolerate some overexposure but for this result, which I think is great, you just need a cheeper ColorPlus 200, which has less dynamic range, less contrast, more muted colors and emphasis in yellows that properly exposed Portra 160.
