Mal: "We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty."
As big fans of Nathan Fillion, we don't know really how we didn't watch firefly before, shame on us! But order has been restored and here we go!
Watching this pilot we were amazed at how current and modern the show felt. It really established a good start to what seems to be an epic adventure for us.
It's a given to say that we loved Mal. He is an amazing leader. He has total control over his ship and crew, which involves a huge pallet of personalities.
And Mal has decided that all he wants out of life is to keep going on his own terms, to be as free as he can.
    Sailing his freedom with serenity

You guys could notice that we recorded this one around Christmas time.
It was an old set-up for us, so we apologise for any sound discomfort, obviously we improved a lot since then, and we are still improving, but this one is definitely our beginnings 😊
If we see that people are as hyped as us to have our reaction of firefly on the channel, obviously next ones will be recorded with the new set-up (a part from episode 2, we also have that in the bag 😉)

I think the Shepherd is such a likable character, because he is immediately able to separate what he would regard as a sinful action, from the person who does it. He doesn't seem to regard sin as something to be condemned, but as something to be more constructively taught, and also more fully undertood.

This show invests you in the characters immediately. I don't think I've ever experienced a show that invested me so quickly in all the main characters. The most engaging feature of this series is the revelation of the characters, their backstories, and how they interact. Malcolm Reynolds was on the losing side of the war against the Alliance, but he carries on his personal rebellion.

Joss Whedon had two shows on his plate, and he created Firefly with the outline for 5 full seasons. FOX decided not to air this pilot until after canceling the series, using the pilot to complete airtime commitments.
The second episode was used as the premiere. The studio wanted a new, shorter pilot with changes. Joss and Tim had to write the episode over a weekend and ready for able read on Monday morning. The normal season at the time would be 22 episodes. 14 episodes were made, 11 were shown in jumbled order with time slots scrambled for sports championships and other muck ups.

    Some things that might help you out (but you got it mostly down!), this is pure world-building with no story spoilers;
The earth grew over-populated with USA and China being main superpowers. Hence why they drop into Chinese speach occasionally. People were pushed to frontiers in new areas of space. Lots of new earth's, terraforming worked on some world's better than others.
The core world's allied and in an effort to 'help' they started to take control over the failing planets. The war at the start is the end of the brief few years of the war for unification.
    On characters;
Mal ultimately wants freedom, he's a man of morals and ethics, who at times hates he has them but he always does the best for his crew and others and himself too.
Zoe is his loyal link to his past service self. She embodies his leadership and inspiration side; both he and her get the job done.
Wash is Mal's main way to be free; flying free from alliance control - so he's the sense of fun for Mal and the crew; every day is sticking it to the Alliance.
Jayne is the needed dogsbody, rough and ready and dependable to get something done - although maybe not in the ideal way.
Kaylee is the heart of the ship, their energy and the sweetest of all things. She's honest and simple - Mal hates complex.
Shepard Book is faith, something Mal lost at the end of the battle of Serenity Valley... Book also has a massive mystery backstory (that's explained in a comic released after the show was cancelled).
River and Simon are the new things, the continued fight against the alliance but are the care and family element of the crew.
Inara is grace and elegance (a lot of today's drugs as well as prostitution is legally regulated in the future 'verse). Respectability is something that Mal aspires to have, but his way of life is more to float like a leaf on the wind, playing the best of the hand that he's dealt. He's not a thinker nor is he trained in life. Inara (and probably companions at large) is there to ultimately make life better.

Best canceled 1 season (sort of) show ever made... I think this ensemble cast is one of the best I've ever seen.
You could rewatch to pick up more.
Western on the ground, because a lot of the planets and moons out on the Rim haven't been colonized for that long, it is essentially a frontier, and livestock is self-replicating, horses are transport that you just have to train and feed, etc.
Science fiction in space, because you need spaceships to travel, and some scifi on the ground too, especially in the Inner Planets which have been settled for longer. The Inner Planets were the Alliance in the war, vs the Independents from the Rim.
Lots more will be revealed over time...

In one of the deleted scenes, Zoe explains that the Battle of Serenity Valley, that we saw, there were so many casualties that 2 weeks in, Mal was senior officer in, commanding a Regiment of the survivors. You are asking all the right questions, getting all the right impressions. Don't wanta say much more, too much to spoil. You will get some answers, but not all...and it will be a bumpy ride...

I've seen the series countless times. Somewhere along the way, I decided that this is actually Mal and Zoe's tale. The tale of the war buddies. It begins with them and ends with them (no spoilers.) And it really is their story. There are so many subtle hints to just how much trust is between them. Jayne gets mad at Mal and Zoe puts her hand on her gun. Zoe never calls Mal out in front of the crew and is always ready to back his crazy schemes. Why? Because she trusts him because he got her through the war when so many others didn't make it. And Zoe always guards his back and he trusts she'll be there to do it. But there are a couple of scenes when they are alone and she speaks her mind to let him know he might not be right about something. And those scenes just make it clear how much trust she has for Mal. Their friendship is truly something special. I would have liked to see later seasons and see their friendship put to the test. I think it would have survived anything.

  • @larrystuder8543

Joss Whedon's style is to dump you into the middle of things, and not stop to explain. And then give a brief answer, in a few minutes, that answers the most immediate questions, but leaves as many as it answers. All you can do is go along for the ride and enjoy it.

Yay! Rob and Trin are doing Firefly! It is, unfortunately, a very quick watch - Fox really screwed the pooch on this one, so to speak. The writing is wonderful. The characters are a joy to be with (mostly). Even the CGI still holds up FAIRLY well. The fact that this show didn't even get one full season before being cut off is a travesty. You mentioned it's only 14 episodes...which, it should be noted, is significantly fewer than the 22 or so that would've been the norm for a season of television at that time. Bear in mind, though, that there was also a feature film (also called Serenity, just to be confusing) released a few years after the show was cancelled - the whole company reprised their roles and it's a must-watch once you've finished with the episodes. There's also a series of shorts ("The River Tam Sessions"?) that, I guess, is recommended be watched BETWEEN episode 14 and the film.
    Have fun with this!!
[eta: Well, if I'd only allowed the video to run a little bit first, I'd have seen that you already know about the feature film. Oops.]

A detail that is easy to overlook in the 1st episode is great writing for Mal's character: during the war he believes in God by kissing a cross (Catholic, maybe?) and then is disillusioned and becomes a non-believer. This carries on in the series (non-spoiler). They lose the last battle in Serenity Valley so that's why the Firefly-class ship is named "Serenity".

The reason there was no cliffhanger and it "just ended" is because that's just how TV was back then. It was starting to move towards serialisation, but mostly that was in the form of two- and three-part episodes, particularly crossing a season boundary (so you'd have to wait six months to see the conclusion).
I wonder how you guys would take Farscape which was mostly episodic at first but gradually became more serialised. Rather than a no alien sci-fi (or almost none, maybe), Firefly is a one-human sci-fi. What it has in common with Firefly, though, is excellent characters and believable interpersonal relationships. Many of the aliens are amazing-looking puppets rather than an actor with latex prosthetics, though there are those, too.

In the Firefly 'verse, the Central planets are the Alliance homeworlds. Very technologically-forward, rich planets. The Border planets are the ones with low-tech, horses, etc. Basically these planets are terraformed and settlers are plopped down to build the world as best they can. This can included indentured servants and slaves. Presumably, once money's made on these planets, it goes back to the rich on the Central planets. Mal and a variety of others mainly travel the outer planets making money any way possible, trying to avoid the notice of the Alliance government.

Nathan Fillion also has a role in the last season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, another fan favorite Joss Whedon show. It's a memorable role, and a really good show, but you probably don't want to watch all 7 seasons just to have context for what's going on when he appears.

At the end you mention that it noticeably has a beginning middle end like a movie, when other shows might have a cliff hanger. Remember this is an old show from before bingeing was possible! So most TV shows had to get back to status quo by the end of the episode and cliffhangers were really only for major episodes like mid season finales. I think this show is just written and shot with such modern sensibilities it's hard to remember how old it is and what TV was like at the time. Enjoyed your reaction and commentary! Love that you fell for the evil Simon fakeout AND the Kaylee fakeout. 😆 I hope posting on youtube means you've decided to continue the show! Enjoy while it lasts! 🥲

I would give you a primer but they uncover most of the information you need gradually throughout the series. It was a crime that it was mishandled so badly by Fox, but what can you do? One thing you noticed that you probably wouldn't necessarily be able to figure out through the show was that the snippets of non-English dialogue are Chinese. They actually translate to nonsense phrases, sometimes with profanities in them, but they are there because in the universe of Firefly the biggest world powers, America and China, merged into an alliance so both cultures mix together. It's a lot like how they intermix English and French in the Canadian parliament.

    "Kaylee's dead."
Rob: "I'm hanging on to a shred of hope."
Yes, Shannon all over again but this time with a happy ending.
So glad you didn't start with the movie!
When Firefly is done and if you feel like some more Joss Whedon, then you could try his (also aborted) series 'Dollhouse'. Very different from this but still an unusual kind of sci-fi, and I think it explores some interesting concepts that will come up in the near future. Two seasons, 27 episodes. I've never seen anyone do 'Dollhouse'.
Others have mention BSG - that would definitely be on my list, as the Rob and Trin Reaction Empire expands more and more!

Welcome to Josh Weedon's world a Western in Space!!! A series cut down before it's time!!! The Network showed it out of sequence showing the second episode first and they kept changing the scheduling so that the ratings were to low for the network to keep it going, 3 or 4 final episodes were not even aired... it took the overwhelming persuasion of the fans over the following years to get the movie made and the fight for a second season continues to this day. I watch and listen to your reactions with all your questions and speculations. About the only 'non-spoiler' tidbit I will add is about the language spoken. Joss Whedon placed into the canon that 'Earth that was' was dominated by English and Mandarin speaking peoples. So the language is a mix of the two. And all the cussing that happens on the show gets past the censors in Mandarin.

Welcome to Firefly, youre in for a great time. As you'll have seen from other comments this series was totally messed with on its original broadcast, with 2 episodes not even being aired at all. You'll have many questions over the series, most will be answered either by the last episode or in the movie....but unfortunately some wont be answred as they were plot points that werent given a chance to be explored properly. Theres also several comics and some novels as well if you feel the desire to go further in the Firefly universe after watching the series/movie

Oh, awesome! Firefly is great! So a few things (no spoilers): We Browncoats (Firefly fans) call it a Space Western - I think you can understand why :) While the Chinese is kind of weird, it's supposed to portray a scenario where US and China were once the 2 main civilizations, and so everyone knows those languages. While there are no subtitles or other translations of the Chinese sentences, you can usually understand from context and tone what they meant.

You're in the same boat as everyone else who watched the show initially in that we all came in cold. What we know of it and the background issues, history and makeup of the universe came partially through things said in the show but many details were fleshed out to the audience after it was over through ComiCon discussions or interviews with Joss Whedon at the time, like the stuff about the Alliance being an amalgam of the last 2 superpowers, China and the US, amongst other things. People have done math to try to figure out when this takes place in relation to us. I believe someone said it's supposed to be about 400 years in the future and it's in a different galaxy as humans had to leave Earth and they spread out into the new galaxy to different planets to inhabit and they terraformed many of them. Joss Whedon wasn't interested in telling a sci-fi story with aliens so there aren't any and just wanted to focus on people. The central planets are the wealthier ones and under the control of The Alliance, while others wanted to venture out away from Alliance and make lives for themselves as pioneers on outer planets, hence the more western feel. The show is really good at giving you a sense of things (even if they never got the chance to explain all the details within the show), but the details, when you find them out, are very interesting and tend to make you more mad/sad that it was cut short.

So glad you are watching this, and that you enjoyed the pilot. It is a lot to jump into and a lot of information to grasp both about characters and the world. I liked that you commented on the structure, it’s very by-the-book competently written, with just enough subversion and witty dialogue that helps the audience stay alert and invested.
If you watched and liked Castle there are some nods to Firefly in that show that you probably missed. For example he dresses up in Mal’s clothes for Halloween and calls this costume «space cowboy». Which is an accurate summary of the vibe Firefly is going for as you noticed pretty quickly.

They sometimes speak in Mandarin, for two reasons, one to emphasize that the culture is a blend of the 2 cultures that colonized space in the untold back story, and second to get around the censors who didn't use translators to find out what was being said, sort of like they say "gorram" instead of god damn.

He also did a lot with the way things were filmed, handheld cameras, off-center shots, initial blurriness, etc. The ship was named Serenity after the battle of Serenity Valley, which was seen at the beginning of the episode.
