One of the great things about this show is the ship, it's one helluva prop. The entire ship is one contiguous set, everything mocked up for actual use. Some of the galley actually functioned as the cast preferred continuing to stay on set, and took their breaks together, on set, in that galley. 5:11 Dortmunder is actually a name deriving from a town in Germany. I don't know if the show is referencing anyone in particular by using it, but I can't help but think of the character John Dortmunder from Donald E Westlake's Dortmunder book series. He was a career criminal whose exploits never went according to plan. As I understand it, many of the Dortmunder books were originally intended to be books in Westlake's Parker book series, but he deemed the plots too comical for the ruthless Parker so he created John Dortmunder to be the lead in those stories instead. He's been portrayed onscreen a number of times by the likes of Robert Redford, George C Scott, Paul Le Mat, Christopher Lambert and even Martin Lawrence.
Someone once commented that everyone says the same things when they watch this for the first time. Episode 1 “I don’t like Jane”. Episode 14 “check out my new hat”.
While _Dortmunder_ is the demonym for a native of Dortmund, Germany, the name of that Alliance cruiser is more likely a reference to John Dortmunder, a character in a series of comic heist novels and stories by Donald E. Westlake, several of which have been adapted to film, notably _The Hot Rock_ (1972) with Robert Redford and George Segal.
I thought that myself. I heard somebody say in a video from a Con, that Joss needed a name for that ship. He happened to be at a bar and saw a neon sign for Dortmund beer. He liked the sound, so named the ship that. WHICH IS FUNNY, because Donald Westlake once explained that he created Dortmunder after his regular protagonist, Parker, refused to co-operate in a novel that was "too comic", Parker being a serious, tough guy... So Westlake needed a name for his new comical guy. He happened to be in a bar, saw a neon sign for Dortmund beer, and liked the sound..
Gotta say I never expected this for this channel. I'm down for it. Interestingly, Firefly was my first introduction to watching reactors at all. Didn't really think I'd get into watching someone react to a show or movie, but an episode of Firefly reaction was in my notifications and I wasn't doing anything else so I checked it out. That reactor had a lot of other reactions to shows I enjoy, so I subbed, and then of course was recommended other reactors. I'm already subbed, here but I would have for Firefly anyway.
12:34 Good call! 17:40 not such a good call! 13:31 Kaylee's near-orgasmic expression as she eats the strawberry shows why she was so happy when she saw what the Shepherd had in his box. 18:00 Summer Glau was concerned that the box (or her posture in it) made her look fat. 31:04 The lawman was awake, facing and armed when he killed him. He makes no stipulation that the weapon be pointed at him. Kaylee seems kind of like a little sister to a lot of the crew, especially Inara. Even Jayne seems to have a bit of a soft spot for her, even if he is horribly insulting to her at dinner.
Always nice to see someone discover this series. The Firefly theme is my phones main ringtone. Fox has had a bad history of canceling scifi shows, this one, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Almost Human, Terra Nova, the list goes on.
Used to be my ringtone, unfortunately it became a pavlovian signal for me to stress out because I started associating it with getting called in to my shitty job.

I have to say I love watching her eyes when Zoe is explaining Reavers to Simon. And then the line that takes all that horror just spoken and multiplies it by a thousand: "And if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order." i always loved that scene where Mal stands up to see Alliance ships descending while wiping out all resistance... and the sad music starts playing.... Just the utter disbelief, loss, and realization that they've been abandoned kicking in... it set the pace for the series and I think grabbed my attention and kept me watching even in some of the slow moments of the series...
Something else to this that always hits me on rewatches is just before this, Mal kisses a small cross and says a prayer... This is the exact moment Captain Reynolds lost his faith.
For those wondering "Ivan" or "Crazy Ivan" is a sudden abrupt change in direction going into the baffles (wake, exhaust area, etc). Also its something that was discussed in The Hunt For Red October movie. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baffles_(submarine)
There might be a legit reason the Reavers were entering the atmosphere that way, but I always figured they were flying crazy because they *were* crazy. LOL!
They are aerobraking to reduce speed for landing. Our shuttles do the same. If you dive straight into atmo it will either rip your ship apart or outright melt it to slag. It's done the way shown so as to provide the most surface area possible to absorb the heat of reentry.
@@somashaman That's actually not true. The smaller the surface area hitting the atmosphere first the farther away the plasma layer is. NASA did tests with various shapes.

Firefly - NICE! I'm here for the ride. Liked and Subscribed. Note: During the war, Mal was very religious and even kissed his cross at one point. 6 years later, he has definitely changed on more than just his view on God.
One of the saddest things about Firefly (other than the only-14-episodes bit) is that I can never go back and watch it for the very first time ever again. So it's really cool to see other people discover this masterpiece for the first time. Thank you!

From day one when this first came out I was hooked and devestated when it was canceled. Loved the Serenity movie wish they had done a sequel. Even all these years later I would watch a new series or movie sequel, It doesn't matter to me that they are all older. Thanks for the review
Jeez, the views on this beast. Anyone who's anyone saw this coming. This is a great way to bounce back from all the introspection over classic horrors with a great adventure story absolutely riddled with comedy and writing gems by Joss Whedon. This is beloved to me because it taught me I wanted to screenwrite. Me and Dad watched this over and over again. Enjoy the show.
LOL! I LOVE THAT ONE! "Ok, one: there are no cows in space, and two: didn't you wear that like 5 years ago?" his daughter says in 2009...5 years after he wore it in the Serenity feature film. "But I *like* it."
"Fun" fact about Inara's syringe, it's not for her to commit suicide. According to producer Tim Minnear, when she takes the injection, anyone that has sex with her dies horribly. There was a story that they supposedly wanted to do in a future season where she gets taken by Reavers. When Mal finally catches up to them and boards the reaver ship to rescue Inara, every single reaver is dead. Really dark stuff. I'm kind of glad that episode never got made because I don't think I'd be able to deal with anyone, let alone Inara, being brutalized like that.
Actually, according to what Nathan said in the 10 year reunion, that had been *his* idea. Whedon & Minear have never confirmed what the syringe is for, exactly, though Morena confirmed in a convention panel that Whedon had told her Inara was terminally ill, and while she would not say what the syringe was for exactly, she did say that it had to do with Inara's illness.
I appreciate the fact that you all don't constantly talk over dialogue, key plot points, or jokes. Too many "Reactors" don't understand that "reacting" does not necessarily mean talking.
Firefly is based on the reconstruction period after the American Civil War. The Brown Coats were the military of the border planets and the Alliance was getting too heavy handed. As you see the Rebel Forces were betrayed by their Government. They were winning the battle of Serenity Valley and got the rug pulled out from under them. They were left out there dying for two weeks as the treaty was hammered out. You can imagine why Mal is so bitter now. The two entities that made it out into space were the Chinese Hegemony and the Anglo- American Alliance. The Anglo-American Alliance kinda won the space race so though more numerous the Chinese take jobs on the lower rungs of society. This is why the characters cuss in Mandarin. The poor girl they had as an on-site translator was run ragged trying to come up with translations of things like "You are a Baboon's Ass Crack" and similar stuff. It was Whedon's way of getting past the censors. The new Executives at Fox did not like the deal Joss made with Fox and Universal. He was to do two series of their choosing, Buffy and Angel and then he got to do the series he wanted to do, Firefly. He wrote and directed it, hell he even wrote the theme song. This was his passion. The actors would hang out in other rooms on the ship even when they didn't have any scenes that day. Everyone loved this show. Fox did everything they could to shitcan this epic. They didn't show the pilot until three weeks in, put it in a bad time slot and called the cast and crew at their Christmas Party to tell them they hadn't been picked up for the next season. When the DVDs came out the fans bought all of them up and sent them to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. This created an even bigger demand to restart the series. Fox and Universal were forced to make the movie. They used the movie to make sure the series would never be revived.
@@fewwiggle I often have a grilled Viennese sausage in a warm baguette, with diced Spanish onion, a tomato reduction, and mustard glaze for supper. :-)
In the Buffy pilot, they put one character in the opening credits then killed him permanently just to set the tone. When Kaylee got shot there was a real chance she would die.
When you're done with _Firefly_ let me suggest you watch the 1967 British spy/sci-fi/surreal series _The Prisoner._ Created by and starring Patrick McGoohan, _The Prisoner_ was also years ahead of its time. It also was cancelled mid-season, only twenty-two episodes being made. Unlike _Firefly,_ which was cancelled pretty much without warning, McGoohan was given enough notice that he was able to write a proper finale episode, which raised as many questions as it answered. It quickly garnered a cult following that continues to this day, with an annual convention held in the resort town that was the main location. It's rather brilliant.
Omg, I’m so excited for this! My second favorite sci-fi series! ❤️ Also, when you’re done with the series (and the movie), since you love Nathan Fillion, you should do a reaction to Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. It’s a short musical that Joss Whedon wrote, and Nathan Fillion is one of the male leads. It’s easily one of my top 10 musicals of all time, and (at the risk of sounding cocky) I’m a professional musical theater actress, so that’s a somewhat informed and educated opinion, lol
As you progress through the series, you’ll notice how the crew members (new ones included) embody a part of Mal that he lost at Serenity. His sense of loyalty (Zoe), optimism (Kaylee), faith (Book), humor (Wash), and so on.
Soooo glad you're watching this show! After you're done, you will want to go back and watch some clips of Castle again. Nathan Fillion referenced Firefly at least once in every season (at least up to five) because Castle was his first show after Firefly got cancelled. In the Halloween episode of season 1 he puts on a "space cowboy" costume, which is his Captain Mal outfit from Firefly. His daughter says, "Didn't you wear that a few years ago?" That was all a nod at Firefly. In Castle Season 5 they go to a sci-fi convention and solve a murder involving a star trek like show, but Castle says something like "didn't that show only last 14 episodes?" and gives a nod to the camera, another Firefly reference.
So glad you guys are doing Firefly - my favorite show. There are maps of the ship you can Google and it helps to know the layout of the ship for some episodes.
You can also check the licensed tabletop role playing games by Margaret Weis Productions. It includes the glossary for Chinese phrases, History of the 'Verse, and more. There is the version licensed for Firefly episodes, and a version licensed for the Universal Studios Serenity movie.
This makes me happy. Finally a show I want to see a reaction to. Fox pulled a total douche move doing that to a show. Thank you for reacting to this amazing show! I also wish you luck with the braces. There were moments when I was 14 that they hurt my cheeks and mouth so much, from wires scratching, and from the tightening making my mouth ache so bad I wanted to cry.
Think of Inara as more of a Geisha. She's been trained since she was young to entertain clients, and it's a respected profession. It fits in with the blend of Western and Eastern (mainly Asian) cultures. All the characters get a surprising amount of development, considering how Fox cut the show short. For the next few episodes, keep in mind that they were also written as "pilots", since Fox for some crazy reason didn't think this particular episode had enough "action" and "appeal" to be the pilot. Don't get me wrong, they're great episodes, but a few people (not me!) feel the episodes don't move the story line forward enough, which is because they were written as pilots rather than regular episodes. We watched it when it originally came out, presented in the order Fox wanted, and it was confusing, but fun, so we stuck around. Glad we did, since when they finally aired this episode it explained everything.
I don't mind the lisp, in fact, it's rather cute. I also never watched Firefly but it's constantly being mentioned as a really good show, I'm not really into TV shows. (Only shows I watched from start to finish are the marvel shows and Dexter) But it's fun to experience it with you guys!

They also are shocked when Kaylee is shot. "I liked her the most!"
A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything.
Hey! Why'd you guys order a dead man?
Hey! My ringtone, too!
Used to be my ringtone, unfortunately it became a pavlovian signal for me to stress out because I started associating it with getting called in to my shitty job.
@@MandoWookie Totally understand that, I had a song I really liked as the ring tone for a girlfriend, couldn't listen to it again for quite a while after we split.
@@darthphayde508 I had to work with my ex for 6 months after we broke up.
Rule #1 for the future: Don't date in the workplace, especially on the same shift, in the same department.
I knew terra nova was gonna get canceled. With the size of its budget at the time. we all knew it wasn’t getting renewed no matter how well it might do.
I have to say I love watching her eyes when Zoe is explaining Reavers to Simon. And then the line that takes all that horror just spoken and multiplies it by a thousand: "And if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order."
To be fair, I probably had the same expression the first time I heard that line. Still a masterpiece of tension, horror, and fear.
Love that you’re reacting to this, think you’ll love it. And don’t worry about the braces at all. The lisp is so subtle and barely noticeable unless you’re specifically listening for it. And you definitely look fine when you laugh. Don’t worry about them at all. I hope you enjoy the rest of the show!
Castle was filled with Firefly References...
Like when Nathan dressed up as Mal, and when his daughter asked what he was, he replied "Space Cowboy".
'When did you learn Chinese?'
"My favorite tv show..."
Awesome TV show. Great reaction guys, some really great episodes coming up :)
OH MY GOSH! You will love this show! If you like Nathen Fillion at all, you will love this show! I am so happy you are watching Firefly, Such a great show!
This show is a great ride and no need to be self conscious about the braces. No one would know if you hadn't mentioned it
omg
this even better then Dexter
still flying thats enough
i always loved that scene where Mal stands up to see Alliance ships descending while wiping out all resistance... and the sad music starts playing....
Of all the missed video game opportunities, Firefly is probably the biggest. It's tailor made for a good story-driven action adventure RPG.
You could tell that The Outer Worlds was trying for Firefly vibes, but unfortunately that game was rather disappointing, at least I thought it was.
I'm not remotely a gamer, but if there was an actual video game for Firefly, I'd become one in a hurry
This is another show that you will really become invested in the characters.
I'll be back for all these episodes
There might be a legit reason the Reavers were entering the atmosphere that way, but I always figured they were flying crazy because they *were* crazy. LOL!
I'd have to watch it again to be sure, but it looked to me like they came in "flat" (after the flip) in order to scrub off speed.
They are aerobraking to reduce speed for landing. Our shuttles do the same. If you dive straight into atmo it will either rip your ship apart or outright melt it to slag. It's done the way shown so as to provide the most surface area possible to absorb the heat of reentry.
@@somashaman I thought our shuttles re-entered bottom side facing down because that's where they put all the most heat-resistant tiles.
@@gluuuuue Aye, and they put them there for the reason I stated above. More surface area = less heat per tile.
@@somashaman That's actually not true. The smaller the surface area hitting the atmosphere first the farther away the plasma layer is. NASA did tests with various shapes.
Yay for Firefly!
Yes Yes one thousand times YES!!
Shiny!! What a wonderful little, much too short-lived show. FYI: My understanding is that the actress playing Kaylee (Jewel Staite) actually hates strawberries. Could've fooled me - that was some damn fine acting. lol
14 episodes and a movie of bliss, then a lifetime of longing.
there is a meme in the firefly community on reddit.... it gets posted nearly every april fools day... its mal pointing a gun and it says "Its not coming back...dont even joke about it"
Firefly - NICE! I'm here for the ride. Liked and Subscribed.
Note: During the war, Mal was very religious and even kissed his cross at one point. 6 years later, he has definitely changed on more than just his view on God.
This makes some of the jokes in Castle that much better.
This show is brilliant and have watched it at least once a year since it was released. Only The Expanse has come anywhere near this.
OMG, y'all doing Firefly... I am just so happy to see the love still happening for this boat 'n crew.
You could see the Missus was onboard from the word "go". Very excited to rewatch this amazing show with you guys!
One of the saddest things about Firefly (other than the only-14-episodes bit) is that I can never go back and watch it for the very first time ever again. So it's really cool to see other people discover this masterpiece for the first time. Thank you!
"No wonder I couldn't say it (Dortmunder). It's all just sounds."
"All words are sounds."
Cowboy hat guy munching the popcorn is based. You, sir, earned a like.
Yea!!!’ This is still my all time favorite TV show.
Heh.... now you know the joke IN CASTLE about Castle's Halloween costume as "Space Cowboy"!!!
SHINY!
LOL! I LOVE THAT ONE! "Ok, one: there are no cows in space, and two: didn't you wear that like 5 years ago?" his daughter says in 2009...5 years after he wore it in the Serenity feature film. "But I *like* it."
There's this theory that River is a slayer like buffy.
My wife and I had a running argument about this show:
Me: It’s a space western!
Wife: it’s a space western!
Just found your channel because of Firefly, looking forward to catching up all your reactions.
Wow, and I just finished Mary Cherry's reaction to this show 2 months ago. Time flies!!
They used the movie to make sure the series would never be revived.
a Dortmunder is a person or thing from Dortmund (Germany), just like a Wiener is a person or thing from Vienna.
Doh!!!!! I never connected that about Vienna
OMG YES!
so happy you are watching this show
No one has ever eaten a strawberry the way Kaylee eats a strawberry.
Be in space your whole life... you will.
Fresh fruit is hard to come by in space.
All the more impressive since the actress hates strawberries.
So excited for you to watch this! Yay! Just from how you received this episode I know you're going to have a good time :)
When you're done with _Firefly_ let me suggest you watch the 1967 British spy/sci-fi/surreal series _The Prisoner._
Created by and starring Patrick McGoohan, _The Prisoner_ was also years ahead of its time.
So good!
Omg, I’m so excited for this! My second favorite sci-fi series! ❤️
Also, when you’re done with the series (and the movie), since you love Nathan Fillion, you should do a reaction to Dr.
5:36 into the first video I've ever seen on this channel and I already love her. "No wonder. That's not a word. Just sounds." :)
I absolutely loved Firefly. It'll be really nice to be able to experience it through the fresh eyes of someone who hasn't seen it before.
As you progress through the series, you’ll notice how the crew members (new ones included) embody a part of Mal that he lost at Serenity. His sense of loyalty (Zoe), optimism (Kaylee), faith (Book), humor (Wash), and so on.
Good point!
brilliant series. Hope you keep watching :)
I subscribed just to watch Firefly with you folks
Yes! Let's do this! 👏👏👏
Shiny! Welcome aboard Serenity.
Firefly means I subscribe!
5:26-
Mr-All words are sounds.
🤣 absolute comic god
Firefly, Grimm, LOST and Black Sails are in the top five of my favorite tv shows of all time.
Why are you ashamed to name the fifth one? ;-)
@@fewwiggle the fifth one is more of a tie between all the 90s star trek shows.
this show is great. glad to see it gaining traction on react channels
"All words are sounds." 🤣
Soooo glad you're watching this show! After you're done, you will want to go back and watch some clips of Castle again. Nathan Fillion referenced Firefly at least once in every season (at least up to five) because Castle was his first show after Firefly got cancelled. In the Halloween episode of season 1 he puts on a "space cowboy" costume, which is his Captain Mal outfit from Firefly. His daughter says, "Didn't you wear that a few years ago?" That was all a nod at Firefly. In Castle Season 5 they go to a sci-fi convention and solve a murder involving a star trek like show, but Castle says something like "didn't that show only last 14 episodes?" and gives a nod to the camera, another Firefly reference.
probably should have read all the other commenters already pointing this out. LOL. I was just so excited that someone else is watching Firefly!
My personal favourite tv show of all time, followed closely by Carnivàle. Would be really fun to see you watch that one :)
“All words are sounds” lol, also, I want popcorn too...
She's a courtesan.
I don't mind the lisp, in fact, it's rather cute.
I also never watched Firefly but it's constantly being mentioned as a really good show, I'm not really into TV shows. (Only shows I watched from start to finish are the marvel shows and Dexter)
But it's fun to experience it with you guys!
Almost if not all of the Firefly Actors had Guest shots in "Castle"
@30:05 having read 'The Shepherd's Tale' I totally get why he's so emotional about that statement. Dude had a very interesting past.
Damn! I love watching you guys, I’m so sad I can only watch one season of this with you.
Glad you watched this. It's a great series. Also, I love ya'lls relationship! So cool to see the joking and quips. You all are fun to watch.
Great reaction! This show is fantastic. Glad your wife is liking it. More good episodes to come. 😊👍
6:47 Your “Deadpool’s wife” delivery had a nice hint of “Scruffy. I’m the janitor” to it. :)
...I've just gotten into your movie reactions. This is just glorious gravy.
"Just a really punchable face I guess, huh?" I laughed my head off on that one. Subscribed!
God I love that show. Every episode is a gem. Glad you are doing this.
