Inna, I'm so glad you chose to experience this series (and film). As you move from episode to episode, you will fall in love with these characters, and as you approach the final episode you will feel sadness in realizing that you're about to say goodbye to these characters you've come to love. All a part of becoming a browncoat. Welcome to our ranks.
Oh, you're going to get an influx of new subscribers with this. The fans call themselves Browncoats, a term for the Independents that Captain Malcolm Reynolds was fighting for at the start of the show. Great show, and handled so poorly by Fox, as if their execs wanted it to fail.
Welcome among our ranks, *Browncoat!* 🤎 They're talking Mandarin, btw. In this setting, English and Mandarin are the two more commonly spoken languages, for lore reasons. In the show they usually do this when a character is swearing, to circumvent the TV rules against too many swear words.
Re: swearing in Mandarin - true. Mandarin speakers sometimes criticize the use of Mandarin in this show for poor pronunciation, grammar and sentence construction, and they are right if you look at Mandarin in today's context but hey, does anyone know what Mandarin would evolve into in an interplanetary context some centuries hence? In the show, I think Mandarin is used as a sort of pidgeon or creole, probably one of a few common tongues used by people from different origins to allow for barter and trade. In the show English has evolved a little also, but only a little. eg: Shiny! But again, dramatic license. We want the English speaking audience to understand everything without effort.
@@marknickols7316 Yeah, you're right... I should have said "a badly mangled version of Mandarin attempted by actors who don't speak the language, without supervision from someone who actually speaks Mandarin." 😅 It's funny to watch the disappointment in Mandarin speakers when they watch Futurama or Firefly and can understand little to nothing, and then you tell them it's 500 years or 1000 years in the future... 😅
I feel like the Captain telling the Doctor that Kaylee was unalive was primarily intended as a sick joke to make the Doctor worry for no reason. But I also believe that their is some truth to the idea that he was also testing the Doctor to see what his reaction would be. Would the Doctor take that knowledge and immediately worry about himself or his patient..
Mal is very very very protective of Kaylee. If you say something bad about her, then he doesn't want you around, so he sent Jayne away from the table, even though what Jayne said is true. As you can see, Jayne is a very simple, crude person. You said "I'm so stupid" when you wrongly guessed the Shepherd was the mole. Throughout the series you, like everyone else, are led to believe one thing, then the plot turns to something that is completely different from what you thought. That's the way Joss Whedon wrote the series, with many many false expectations about what is about to happen. One thing that most reactors agree on is that the episodes keep getting better and better.
As for the food situation, they have stuff to eat... but it is a processed and packaged protein base. Long shelf life, doesn't require refrigeration, etc. Fresh fruits and vegetables or meats are much more rare when they are off world. And yes, there is a spattering of Chinese words and phrases mixed throughout the dialogue. That's the culture on the show: heavily influenced by American and Chinese societies.
Welcome to the club, you are now hooked and will be along for the whole ride. Every episode will take you through several emotions, and these characters will be like friends in just a short time. Welcome to the browncoats.
Well done Inna. I have watched these 14 episodes many times and never tire of them. I know a lot about Firefly but not everything. When you hear Chinese being used, first, The USA and the Chinese were the top 2 societies when humans left the earth to find new homes so some Chinese is used. Second, the producer, creator and writers can use Chinese when they want to cuss and get it past the critics. This was 22 years ago and language restrictions were much tighter than today. Keep up the good work.
I wish they'd not deleted the scene where Zoe explains Serenity to Simon. Going from being responsible for 30 men, to being responsible for a couple thousand, and watching them slowly die, unable to do anything about it, until you're pretty much left with only Zoe, is going to affect you mentally and emotionally. I think it's a driving force behind Mal's tribalism. His drive to protect and provide for those he considers his. Even the ones he doesn't like. (yes, I know, in 2024 "tribalism" is a dirty word, but it's Man's true nature; just as wolves are pack animals, Man is tribal. There's nothing wrong with it).
Believe or not, all of these Firefly episodes were filmed within six months...they represent only six months of the lives of the actors, but the actors are all still close friends.
You will fall in love with this series. I'm sure you've been told that but it is true. Great reactions on your viewing. Glad to see you like what you've seen so far. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
There's a great deal you don't know about the characters and that's what makes the series and the movie so good. The characters evolve and are revealed slowly. The Captain is the ideal Western gunslinger hero. He lives by his own code and he will never betray it or the people he cares about. His crew are the people he cares about. This first episode has brought them all together and made us care about them too, even Jane who is what they used to call a 'hard case'. Jane knows that there is only one Alpha wolf on the ship and that's the Captain. Their relationship is one that men will immediately understand, but might puzzle women.

Ahh, another new recruit. Shiny. Firefly is the make of the ship. The ship is named Serenity. The thinking behind the show was America and China were the two surviving world powers and they merged over time. Also makes it easy to curse without the censors jumping in. Neat little effect most miss is the live text on Badgers "paper". Parent grounding a child. It is called command. As captain, one must maintain absolute control. It is not a position to be kinder/gentler. Jayne was taking out Patience's sniper and covering Mal.
Technically, Firefly didn't get a full season. Unlike today where you're lucky to get 10 episodes in a "season", Firefly was probably supposed to get 20-24 since it was on network TV.
Firefly fans are very much like The Warning Army in the music world. I think you will fall in love with these characters just like we all did. Enjoy the ride and thank you for sharing your reactions with with us. 😊
Welcome new Browncoat! You'll see that word a lot and you'll find out it's meaning over the next few weeks. It's a pleasure to subscribe and watch you react to one of my all time favorite TV shows of all time!
"Firefly" caught lighting-in-a-bottle in DVD sales but because it was only on network TV, was very expensive to produce and was always going to struggle to find a cult audience. The fans won and got a movie made, but that also lost money at the box office. It is what it is, let's all be grateful that it helped pave the way for "nerd/geek" culture that allows for hit streaming sci-fi shows today. Streaming was definitely it's ideal format but just wasn't available in 2002.
I just found your channel today. Liked and subscribed for your 'Firefly' journey, and I'll check out some other things too. I think you did really well - especially when considering English is not your native language. This show is great for re-watching. Everything shown has a well written, nuanced reason behind it. There are lots of subtext. Even the minor characters & scenes have depth. It is easy to miss things, especially on the first watch. I have a lot to say, hopefully it isn't too much. [NO SPOILER TALK]: -- It sounded like you caught on to Mal's cruel joke being a test ---> When Mal told Simon "Kaylee is dead" it was more than just a cruel joke. Mal was also testing him. Mal made it a point to look at Simon's reaction. He even mentioned it to the crew "You should have seen his face!" (Mal shares with the crew he noticed Simon was concerned for Kaylee) and "... he's a good doctor." (Mal runs it past the others that Simon can benefit the crew). Simon's concerned response for Kaylee (and not for himself & sister) is why Mal offered him a position on his crew at the end. Had Simon reacted selfishly for only his & River's concerns, Mal would have caught on to that. Instead of sharing a cruel joke with the crew, Mal would have been telling the crew "Hey crew. Don't trust that selfish #@%^!" -- You also caught that fresh food is scarce on the outer worlds. People are used to eating synthesized food so it's a big deal when Shepherd Book shows up with real strawberries and fresh produce. -- I didn't see on TH-cam if you caught --> -- Drinking water would be limited on a ship. Using very little to rinse your hands and face would be necessary. Chances are that isn't drinking water but more of a sanitizer/cleaner that Mal used sparingly on his hands and face during his bathroom break. Inara as well with her bath. -- Mal was a devoted Christian with a lot of optimism during the Battle of Serenity Valley. He changed since then. He is no longer a practicing Christian and acts more pessimistic. Mal to Shepherd Book: "You're welcome on my boat. God ain't." -- Shepherd Book beat up & took down a trained Fed officer very quickly. GENERAL NO SPOILER INFO: There is no such thing as a bad 'Firefly' episode. The series is sometimes called 'Joss Whedon's unfinished symphony'. Whedon had signed a 5 season contract (22-24 episodes per season) to tell a 3 part story. You have picked a real gem of a story here. It goes in this order: 1) 14 episodes (seasons were normally 22-23 episodes long back then, often with a double length pilot - this series was sabotaged so it could be canceled early due to executive politics at FOX). 2) Short Movie promo teasers "The River Tam Sessions" - best watched in release order and NOT the fan made chronological order. 3) 'Serenity' movie will finish the main story arc 1 of 3 as a soft reboot (yes, it has the same name as the pilot episode you just watched). 4) Bloopers and Deleted scenes. 5) Comics, Novels, and Role Playing Games for tying up loose ends and more Official Lore that continues with story arc 2 & 3 ... and beyond.
You are clearly very perceptive, it's nice to see someone who can appreciate the material for what it is. Looking forward to more "Firefly" reactions with you. While sad that our journey will be short, at least it will be together. Thanks for appreciating the show and being so cool!
"Kaylee's Dead!" is a prank on the audience, the show's creator had gained a reputation for killing off characters in his other shows and he always wanted to include an actor in the opening credits just to kill them off so when Mal utters that line fans of his other work would have been convinced he'd finally gone through with it
Some of us wonder how anyone could not...Not judging, but honestly asking for directions to something more worthy of love. Still will love this no matter.
One detail that many viewers, myself included, miss during the first episode, is how Mal changed his view on religion. During the battle of Serenity Valley, he believed in God, but he lost faith after the defeat
@michaelhoward142 quite right, sir. However, the level of information revealed about Blue Sun and other interesting features made me think that it would be a worthy mention 😉
28:20 Yes, that was a test. See how Simon would react. If he had been more concerned about his own survival, since he was told, he'd be spaced if she dies, then he would have been spaced. But because he was more concerned for his patient, he was allowed to live, and even got invited to join the crew.
This show has the best characters with the best actors. Summer Glau as River Tam is not just gold, but one of my celebrity crushes. And also combine perfectly drama and comedy on the dialogues, and this is not arguable at all.
30:55 -- RE: Oh No! Poor Shepherd!; A: That's his Job title, like "Father" for a priest or "Pastor" for some Protestant clergy. His name is Book, though, which is also metaphorical as heck. #EnoughSaid
"Serenity": Mal's war experience and his current (sorta) Pirate life. Welcome to the "Firefly" 'Verse, it's a short, interesting ride in a well-crafted frontier world "far from Earth." How long will it take for this viewer to fall in love with "Firefly"? When will she start singing "The Ballad of Firefly"? I watched this long-ago Fox TV show, as they "threw crumbs to viewers and didn't broadcast other episodes," then they moved it to the "Friday night Death Slot." But I didn't see all of "Firefly" until I bought the DVD set. A Companion has the status of a Geisha in this frontier world. I recall reading that the Chinese spoken in this TV series had viewers in Taiwan, Hong Kong and overseas towns ROTFLMAO.;)
Pilots for Broadcast TV were sometimes made movie length so they could be used to cover its cost as a made for TV Movie if they didn't make the series! Also while Firefly is said to one season it's more like a half season with some episodes that were filmed not shown during it's original run!
When Jayne (not jayce) trained the sniper rifle on mal, it was a direction choice to make it seem momentarily that he was truning on mal , but the truth is he was just watching mal to see how the deal went dow, since there wasnt actually a plan for after he took out the sniper.
They speak Chinese for reasons never explained on the show. It was about the US and China merging or something long ago/in our future. But it's really so the characters can curse on broadcast TV. Keep in mind, this pilot was rejected by the network and aired last. Also, the show was intended to have 22 episodes a season, but they only shot 14.
It's in teh compainion etc. The USA and China became the dominant superpowers, such that the "Earth that was" essentially became two empires, and most citizens knew English and Chinese to some extent. For the show of course, they used Chinese as an excuse and way to have the characters swear. The Companion books translate, but the whole point is that you don't have to understand it, you get the general idea from the tone and switch to Chinese.
@adp806 I generally don't have any interest in things outside of a show itself, beyond gag reels and making of featurettes. This show was canceled, which killed the time to explain this, but I don't like when major things are left to be explained in other media.
@@johncampbell756 I don't either. This show just grabbed my attention like that. That, and I worked processing books that included the companions, so they came directly to me. Things weren't explained because shows invariably like some information to be a bit of a mystery for viewers to learn as they go. Sudden cancellation unfortunately ruins that. A fair amount was provided by the movie. Not all though, as that would be too much of an info dump, and there was some hope for some kind of continuation after that.
@adp806 I have some Buffy and Angel stuff (books and comics) due yo an old job. I get it. I have serious issues with the movie, which I'll have to wait for a while to get to. LOL
The Chinese was to avoid the censoring when they were cursing. So don't worry about the Chinese, and no your brain isn't shorting out with understanding English because it's not English!
Take your time, dear. You're doing great. And remember: there is no way to get YOUR reaction wrong. It's YOUR reaction. YOUR reaction may be different from MINE, but that doesn't make it WRONG. As you go through this series, more information (at least a little bit) will be brought to bear on all the characters, even the outlying characters (criminal element, Alliance, Reavers, et. al.) I can promise that you will have quite a few questions (about everything) come up as you watch. I CAN'T promise that they will ALL be answered by the end of it all. Just sit back, strap in, and hold on tight. It's gonna be a FUN ride!!
Jayne ("Public Relations") did indeed zero in on Mal (The Captain) with the rifle scope and smile- it wasn't that he was betraying him, but a "I could if I wanted to" moment. On the Earth That Was, China and the United States were the dominant cultural powers; hence the main language being a mixture of English and Chinese, (the Chinese being the way to allow "cursing" without running afoul of television censors)
Honey, he owns the ship. He is the Captain. The boss. So he's not rude he's just in charge. Yes kinda like a parent but he clearly cares for his crew. The language mix includes Chinese because there are over a billion Chinese already and remember this is set in the future.
Your awareness that fresh fruit might be uncommon is spot on. Badger uses an apple peeler in a manner that suggests he’s showing off that he’s wealthy and sophisticated. Also, 31:30 “Brain is braining.” I love that! 😂
Just discovered your channel and I find you are reacting to one of my favorite shows ever, Firefly. So I had to immediately subscribe. I love your reactions. I can’t wait to see what you think of the rest of the series.
These are just a few things they only originally televised in the US 1/2 a season with the 3 unaired episodes only shown over the summer in Europe. The cancelation was not due to screwups or a series of bad things. The executive put in charge intentionally sabotaged the series after the former executive who had green-lit the series was promoted. The new guy began sabotaging the series before it aired through misinformation in the TV ads for the show. Not airing this pilot with the excuse of not enough action. He then had episodes aired out of order and finally changed the air/time slot without informing the viewers and thus it was canceled. A week or 2 later they aired this 2-hour pilot. The movie was not made by FOX but by fans, who raised over $30 million to make the movie. The movie is not a wrap of the series but a continuation with a few character development backsteps as most people would not have seen the series. It was intended to be the first of a movie franchise but Universal managed to botch the rollout and it didn't make enough to warrant more movies. The reason the movie isn't called Firefly the Movie or something with Firefly in it was thanks to FOX.
I love that Jayne is known on this channel as "the public relations guy." I agree about Morena Baccarin. It's like all of the world's superior genes came together at once to form the supreme genetic specimen. She is outrageously gorgeous.
@@Mr.EkshinKaylee would be getting on my last nerve in under an hour. She’s fine in small doses but her naive and oddly flirty middle school girly behavior continually makes me cringe. 0 out of 100 times for me because you don’t stick your Dick Tracy in crazy.
@@Mr.EkshinAh, the old Ginger vs Mary-Ann debate. Now, as then the correct answer is not "Ginger or Mary-Ann?', the correct answer is 'Ginger and Mary-Ann'!
I love that they used Mandarin to be able to openly curse on network TV and not get censored. The bloopers are filled with the cast trying get the pronunciation correct, pretty funny and something worth watching after Serenity. You bond so much with the characters that it's like watching home movies.
So glad you found Firefly! If I may make a suggestion though, keep long thoughts and comments until after the reaction, maybe jot a brief note to remind yourself. After the show you asked about the "P.R." guy's reasoning, which was explained during his conversation with Mal at the end of the episode, but you were talking and explaining something over the conversation and missed it. Firefly has lots of small moments, subtle looks, comments and clues that are missed if you're not paying attention. That being said I love your energy, you really seem excited by what you've seen so far and I look forward to more Firefly reactions!!! 👏 👏 👏
You will find a very dedicated fan base. I think the new subs that come to you from this series will remain with you through others. Have fun. Good reaction.
Someone might have already said, but they speak Chinese as well as English. Mostly for cursing, to get it by US Censors. The backstory on that is interesting, too. The US and China were the last two superpowers left before they left Earth, and so the two mixed when they settled other worlds. SO, no, it wasn't you losing English comprehension. It was them speaking Chinese.
28:26 I think it is a test, to see how Simon would react and what he would do in that moment...but I also think Mal enjoyed messing with him. 35:14 Simon is not good at being sneaky. He's been traveling around using his real name and not even wearing any sort of disguise. At dinner, he was even telling them all about working as a doctor in a hospital on the planet Osiris. He's definitely doing a terrible job of hiding, especially from the government. The outer planets, like Whitefall, are more primitive and don't have the resources for a lot of technology, but the planet where Simon got on the ship was one of the richer central planets with plenty of technology. They probably tracked Simon on Persephone using tech and either the ship had to submit a passenger manifest, or since they knew he would be trying to leave the planet, they questioned people at the dock, and found someone that saw Simon get on the ship, 42:12 They absolutely did do it on purpose. The whole episode has been letting us know upfront that Jayne is aggressive, not always the smartest, motivated by money, and not necessarily all that trustworthy. It makes him a bit of an unknown element on the ship.
I've often seen people comparing the Companions of the Firefly 'Verse with RL geisha. Contrary to the common Western belief, geisha are not prostitutes. However, Companions have some things in common with geisha, such as being educated in music and dance. Perhaps a better comparison would be to the hetairai of Ancient Greece. Much like a Companion, a hetaira was often well-educated, and rather than just being about sex, the hetaira would also provide company and entertainment. In fact, the Greek word actually means "companion". Glad that you're checking out what is one of my favourite TV-shows! I am sure that you'll soon consider yourself a fellow Browncoat! 😊
VERY nicely done Inna! All the events/folks you were a bit confused about are very much the things that JossWeden wanted to make viewers anxious about... Trust your high intellect & great powers of observation and you'll be fine. PS: the Chinese language is used a lot, mainly for saying stuff that networks didn't allow, ie, "swearing"!
Jayne isn't actually the public relations guy (Mal was joking as a way to avoid answering Simon's question); he's more like the ordinance officer, though Mal does use him when he needs to intimidate someone, like the Alliance spy who tried to arrest Simon and River. Yes, Jayne is perfectly capable of betraying people, but he has some redeeming characteristics as well. He's more complex than he appears to be, though he really isn't terribly smart. You'll learn more in future episodes.
The other language is Mandarin. The lore is that it took a joint American/Chinese venture to colonize a new star system. Of course, the way things are these days, it would probably need more than that.
Only *one half* of a season. TV series back then were usually at least 26 episodes, sometimes more. And this one was cancelled abruptly without finishing its first season, leaving a lot of story unresolved. The movie did a decent job of tying up the loose strings. As good as it could, at least.
I saw this when it was first aired and I'm always envious of folks who can see it in the proper order. Envy aside: welcome, my friend. You are very welcome among us.
"The Alliance" (officially the Union of Allied Planets) is the descendant of the alliance between the United States and China that led the people that left from Earth-That-Was on generation ships to this new galaxy that they all live in. Everyone speaks a mixed language of English and Chinese. In reality the show uses Chinese to let the characters curse and still get around the censors.
"Dortmunder" is the name of the Alliance cruiser. It's probably named for John Dortmunder, the hapless antihero who stars in a popular series of comic crime capers written by Donald E. Westlake. (Highly recommended, by the way. Westlake was an excellent author and his crime novels are both ingenious and very funny.)
The sweet young woman who was shot is Kaylee Frye, _Serenity's_ engineer. She was played by Jewel Staite, whose best known role in a different series is as Jennifer Keller, on _Stargate Atlantis._
The other language is Chinese, they use it mostly to get away with swearing on network TV. Think of the show as a mix of western, sci-fi and Robin Hood. One of the 2 best shows ever aired on TV, the other being Band Of Brothers.
You weren't losing your English language. Joss Whedon believed Chinese would become more prominent and so the people in this show often speak Chinese. Also, your bow looks so cute! 😊
41:26 I love how you said probably there. As others have said they slip in mandarin here and there primarily for swearing. Should maybe find subtitles just for the mandarin for future episodes though the most used will get familiar like goza (garbage) and goram it (goddamn it). His name is Jayne Cobb. Not Jace but I get the confusion in first watch. He is not public relations. That was a joke just like Inara isn't an ambassador. Simon's intense look and demeanor upon arriving is there to get you to suspect him and the sheppard there in the cargo hold was meant as a second subversion of expectation. Same with Jayne's possible betrayal. Same with Kaylee and Mal's telling simon she's dead, same as the sheppard being knocked out. All there to trick you so don't feel bad about it. Another fun one was "we're too pretty to die"... 20 seconds later-dead
A single, perfect fresh strawberry is such a treasure, it can be sold individually, each in a presentation box. And you will see, food in any form, is a treasure of great value. These people live that close to the edge of barest survival. Welcome to our 'Verse.
I'm just gonna put this out there for folks who might not know....Firefly, technically speaking, NEVER really ended. In 2018, Boom! Studios launched an ongoing series of comic books / graphic novels that serve as a continuation of the series, immediately following the events of the 2005 movie, Serenity. These publications are RECOGNIZED AS CANON, since Joss Whedon, himself, acts as a story consultant on them. To date, there are over 70 such publications, the latest being from March 2024. These graphic novels provide very detailed background stories for all the main characters and are painstakingly accurate to the unique feel of our beloved little space western. I have collected many of them and I can testify to their wondrous quality!! I won't reveal any spoilers but I earnestly encourage all Firefly fans to seek them out if you still hunger for more of Capt. Mal & Co.
Originally, this episode wasn't aired until much later because FOX executives wanted something different. One consequence of this is that Shepard Book's character was tweaked for the rest of the show, changing him from an idealistic preacher who finds himself in the real world for the first time to someone who is . . . um, different. While it would have been fascinating to see the interactions between him and Mal, I much prefer this version.
Inara's bathing scene is a ritual cleansing done by Companions. She was publicly humiliated and insulted by Mal, this ritual bath is used by Companions. Notice her facial expression and overall demeanor changes by the end of the ritual cleansing. From 😢 to 😊.
Full disclosure, *New Sub* as of today and I enjoyed your Star Wars OT videos (ESB and ROTJ). So I'm very pleased to see you're watching this, too. In my opinion (no Spoilers, either) I think Joss Whedon's main *Undisclosed* source of inspiration for this cancelled series of awesome-should-never-have-been-cancelled is "Cowboy Bebop". If you haven't seen the animated shows, they're worth reacting to. If you have you might recognize the stuff Joss borrowed and the things he changed, too. There's more people on the Serenity, but they have the same concerns as the people on Cowboy Bebop, like where the next meal will be coming from, pasts that haunt them, who they really are, and how to get out of kitchen duty.
It is very "shiny" that you're giving this show a chance, Inna. You will be a Brown Coat very soon. 👍😊 BTW, this is a bi-lingual space culture. Just about everyone speaks English and Chinese Mandarin.
The Fox executives didn't care much for this pilot, so they didn't actually air it until the end after the series had been cancelled. The episode "The Train Job" was the first episode to air that audiences got to see. Come to think of it, considering how they treated this show, Fox didn't care much for the show in general. And yes, EVERYBODY loves Kaylee.
While I'm certain that many have already said it, the moments when it sounds like a different language, it is. They're speaking Mandarin Chinese. They mostly use it to swear (Use bad language) to avoid censorship, though they use it as regular language as well. "Dongma?" = "Understand?", "Mei Mei (May May)" = "Little Sister". Around 8:16 Wash gives a whole sentence to his wife (Zoe) which I always interpreted as, "You guys be careful and come home safe." "I am very smart...top 3% of my class...So when I tell you that my sister makes me look like and IDIOT CHILD, I want you to understand my FULL meaning." "They kill her off just like that?!?! In the First episode?!?!" Welcome to the worlds of Joss Whedon. 😂 (We got lucky in this first episode. He isn't above killing off characters VERY early in a show.) The Fed guy tracked down Simon which is what led him to River. Finally, Welcome to the Verse. Strap yourself in because it's gonna be a hell of a ride.
The alliance is the 2 superpowers in space forming 1 government: the Untied States and China. That is why English and Chinese are both used in this society. Also, using Chinese allows to use curse words without triggering the sensors.
Good choice. The best TV show ever. They didn't wrap up every question in the movie, I think because they had hopes that because the show was so beloved there may have been another movie or even restart the series. Unfortunately never happened. But some people still ask for a reboot

Yes so true. Brown coat here checking in and subscribed.
Pretty much how I find all the reactors I watch. Their reaction to Firefly tells me everything I need to know.
I heard there was Browncoat action over here. Reporting for duty!
Welcome among our ranks, *Browncoat!* 🤎
They're talking Mandarin, btw.
@@marknickols7316
Yeah, you're right... I should have said "a badly mangled version of Mandarin attempted by actors who don't speak the language, without supervision from someone who actually speaks Mandarin." 😅
It's funny to watch the disappointment in Mandarin speakers when they watch Futurama or Firefly and can understand little to nothing, and then you tell them it's 500 years or 1000 years in the future... 😅
@@happyslapsgiving5421 And besides, Mandarin to English doesn't exactly translate word for word.
Dead. The word is "dead."
His name is Jayne.
The man called Jayne! 😮
He's my Hero, lol
Our love for him now, ain't hard to explain! Public relations is how he got fame! 🤭
He's name is the same is a dame! The hero of us all, the man they call Jayne!
Jayne's girls name!
@@PierceThirlen2 Don't say that! He's gonna show you his man parts! :p
The statement Mal makes that we are "Just too pretty for God to let us die" is to give you an idea that Mal at that time was a man of faith.
Hes also wearing a crucifix at that time and is without it after the battle of series valley.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves please.
I feel like material this thought provoking has been deemed illegal. Yet Browncoats persist.
Another Firefly reaction. Shiny!
Gorram. There goes my productivity. Well, at least my dreams of having it.
Woohoo! A new Firefly reactor! Looks like you'll be along for the whole ride - strap in tight!
I'm so glad you ran with my recommendation in your live chat. You're going to love this series!
Also serves the same purpose as a "bleep"🎉
@@laramyelliott2903But so much cooler! I sometimes insult people to their face, but they think I am sneezing!
Welcome to the club, you are now hooked and will be along for the whole ride.
Every episode will take you through several emotions, and these characters will be like friends in just a short time.
Welcome to the browncoats.
Welcome to the 'verse. After seeing you react to the theme song, I can't wait for "Jayne's Town".
With regard to the captain's demeanor, you'll note that he behaves in a way specifically tailored to the situation and whom he is addressing.
What you said about Mal and Jayne is something not a lot of people want to hear. Well you said it. And I guess that's something.
Dude, it doesn't "puzzle" women that males have a pecking order.

They didn't even air 2 of the 14 episodes at all. Glad they added them to the DVD.
@@LibrarianMichael yes that was a pleasant surprise when I purchased the DVDs. 👍 'new' episodes!

Joss Whedon has created several great characters. These are his best.
What you hear is the characters occasionally cursing in Chinese.
Such a great, forgotten gem. Looking forward for more!
One of the best sci-fi shows ever, IMO. Thanks for reacting to it!
Buckle in. It is a fun ride!
[NO SPOILER TALK]:
-- It sounded like you caught on to Mal's cruel joke being a test ---> When Mal told Simon "Kaylee is dead" it was more than just a cruel joke.
Don't trust that selfish #@%^!"
-- You also caught that fresh food is scarce on the outer worlds. People are used to eating synthesized food so it's a big deal when Shepherd Book shows up with real strawberries and fresh produce.
-- I didn't see on TH-cam if you caught -->
-- Drinking water would be limited on a ship.
God ain't."
-- Shepherd Book beat up & took down a trained Fed officer very quickly.
GENERAL NO SPOILER INFO:
There is no such thing as a bad 'Firefly' episode. The series is sometimes called 'Joss Whedon's unfinished symphony'. Whedon had signed a 5 season contract (22-24 episodes per season) to tell a 3 part story.
You have picked a real gem of a story here. It goes in this order:
1) 14 episodes (seasons were normally 22-23 episodes long back then, often with a double length pilot - this series was sabotaged so it could be canceled early due to executive politics at FOX).
5) Comics, Novels, and Role Playing Games for tying up loose ends and more Official Lore that continues with story arc 2 & 3 ... and beyond.
Thanks for introducing me. Hooked!
You are clearly very perceptive, it's nice to see someone who can appreciate the material for what it is. Looking forward to more "Firefly" reactions with you.
While sad that our journey will be short, at least it will be together.
Thanks for appreciating the show and being so cool!
"Kaylee's Dead!" is a prank on the audience, the show's creator had gained a reputation for killing off characters in his other shows and he always wanted to include an actor in the opening credits just to kill them off so when Mal utters that line fans of his other work would have been convinced he'd finally gone through with it
We "brown coats" (diehard Firefly fans) are prone to following anyone who wants to watch our favorite show. You should see an uptick.
Maybe we could let the show reveal things like that to new viewers. Isn't that how we browncoats learned about it?
@michaelhoward142 quite right, sir. However, the level of information revealed about Blue Sun and other interesting features made me think that it would be a worthy mention 😉
@@Agadorn70 I agree. In fact, I don't recall the show ever telling us ANYTHING about Blue Sun. I wish they had.
I ask anyone to direct me towards a more perfect manifestation of the laughing and crying masks that symbolize the art of Drama.

I would be interested to hear Inna's opinion on Nishka's accent in the train job episode.
Niska is supposed to be Czech, IIRC.
Slavic accents are all in a jumble to most western ears. We all sound like donkeys to them!

I wonder how solid his accent is.
@@shaggybaggums I can do a drunk Russian accent spot on, if you are also drunk.
Mal is a bit rough around the edges, but he has a strong moral sense (for an outlaw).
❤. Enjoy the ride!
Honey, he owns the ship. He is the Captain. The boss. So he's not rude he's just in charge. Yes kinda like a parent but he clearly cares for his crew. The language mix includes Chinese because there are over a billion Chinese already and remember this is set in the future.

Let’s be bad guys!!!
I'll be in my bunk, until the next reaction.
After this I suggest Joss's best work (no offense brown coats) Buffy the Vampire Slayer the show.

Everybody ♥ Kaylee! Such a fantastic series! 🚀
They probably tracked Simon on Persephone using tech and either the ship had to submit a passenger manifest, or since they knew he would be trying to leave the planet, they questioned people at the dock, and found someone that saw Simon get on the ship,
42:12 They absolutely did do it on purpose.
I loved that you kept calling Jayne "the public relations guy"! LOL!!!
I'm always here to see reactions to this particular show. It was excellent.

So happy to see a new Firefly watcher! Do you have a couple more episodes already available on your patreon?
Episode 2 is already up, episode 3 will be published today 😊
This was a great series and did not deserve to be cancelled. I've rewatched it many times. You will enjoy it.
She was played by Jewel Staite, whose best known role in a different series is as Jennifer Keller, on _Stargate Atlantis._
actually the same character with a different name in a different universe...
@@Metzwerg74 Thanks. I'm not a _Stargate_ fan, so I got my information from Wikipedia.
Mal & Co.
4:30 ALL women fully understand; when it comes to MEN, growing OLD is inevitable, growing UP is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL (and so VERY FEW of us choose to)!
firefly!
Jayne's "betrayal" was definitely intentionally ambiguous.
Yay new reactor!
I'll just add my own welcome to the Browncoats! I can't wait to head down the rabbit hole with you.
The show never mentions faster than light speed.
It all takes place in a weirdly dense compound system.
Around 8:16 Wash gives a whole sentence to his wife (Zoe) which I always interpreted as, "You guys be careful and come home safe."
"I am very smart...top 3% of my class...So when I tell you that my sister makes me look like and IDIOT CHILD, I want you to understand my FULL meaning."
"They kill her off just like that?!?! In the First episode?!?!" Welcome to the worlds of Joss Whedon. 😂 (We got lucky in this first episode. He isn't above killing off characters VERY early in a show.)
The Fed guy tracked down Simon which is what led him to River.
I think they wisely refrained from trying to tie up all the loose ends in the movie and just stuck with a couple.
