21:42 "Is he holding something?" Time for some lore: Joss Whedon did not want to film everything in standard screen aspect ratios, preferring to go widescreen in a more cinematic aspect. Studio argued, but JW had the scenes blocked so that the editors had more widescreen angles. This shot in particular had been shot in both aspects by different cameras. The tv ratio would have Wash's hands off-screen, so when they did a quick readjustment of cameras, the control yoke had not been returned and Alan just pantomimed it.
Other unique things about the Firefly production : Joss intended to give the audience to absorb the scene before moving to the next scene [as opposed to no-gap jump cuts], but he found out that if he faded to black, the network cut to commercial automatically because of the hue... he had to reverse-engineer how dark the screen could be before the automated signal was triggered. I believe he actually had to trademark/register/patent the color as the deepest possible blue/purple before it counted as black.
Through the run of the show, (as depicted in this episode with Inara's first client), any time the camera loses focus, it is tied to the peak of ecstacy.

Ooof. Trash is a rough episode to get spoiled on. Not only do you lose the impact of the Simon misdirect of this ep, but it also has major fallout from two other episodes (one of which is also a great twist.)

Badger : This was meant to be the role that Joss Whedon intended to cameo in his world. Mark Sheppard did so well in his audition, that he won the role. No one told him until after the episode wrapped that he took the boss's job, for fear of messing up his performance.

Fox exec's were idiots when it came to this series. Companion is the actual term for Inara's profession. Jayne is loyal to those he considers as part of his crew. He never considered Simon and River part of the crew because they were fugitives and were only supposed to be passengers. We do see why Mal made Jayne part of the crew. Hope you do a reaction to the gag reels for the series and the movie.

"Trash" is a favorite, but a lot of world building went on before that. It's kind of a free standing, isolated episode. If the series had lasted longer, it's what the show might have become: a new story, a new place, every week, sometimes with returning characters, sometimes not.

When the show was being prepped, they changed their minds about the first actress cast as Inara. Morena Baccarin showed up for her first audition, and went immediately to wardrobe. When you see her in Serenity meeting Book, that is her first scene. Ever. First job, first scene, fresh from Julliard.

    • @Nick-pu3of
      @Nick-pu3of 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

See, Stephen, it is commonly said on DVD jackets and such that FIrefly was her first "television series" job, not her first job ever. Her first work as a professional actress was when she was 6 years old, and while she certainly wasn't a veteran when she joined Firefly, it was far, faaaaar from her first job. And she'd been graduated from acting school for two years by that point.

Most people hate Jayne at the beginning of the series and question why he's even there but he serves a very important role in the series. With every character being "good" and getting along 95% of the time the show needs a character that makes us uneasy and stirs the proverbial pot. Adam Baldwin is so great in this. He's played so many memorable characters and, for me, Jayne Cobb is right up there with John Casey. Duaffy is going to love the "Firefly"/"Serenity" journey.

Something that doesn't often get mentioned is that Firefly competed with Fox's execs' pet project, the XFL (extreme football league - it ultimately failed hard). Firefly got delayed, even preempted by XFL games and commentary going over time. That was in addition to Fox execs starting the series with an episode that didn't explain much unlike this episode. These factors actively prevented a fan base growing with the first half-dozen episodes and so the execs, that caused the poor ratings, canceled the series based on the ratings.

This caused Fox to be very unsure of the show and they didn't know where to put it in their line-up, which caused it to not really have a slot, and part of why they canceled the show.

The reason why there is Chinese influence in the show and you hear the characters speaking Mandarin on occasion is because in the Firefly universe and canon, the US and China were the only two super powers nations left in the world and they joined together to form the Anglo Sina Allaince, simply known as the Alliance in the show. Speaking Mandarin was also a way for the shows creator Josh Wheaton to get using curse words past the censors lol. I always wondered if the US and China formed the Alliance, why there were not many Chinese people in the show lol. Anyway I love this series and such a shame it got a raw deal from Fox.

The first time I saw Firefly, the way they talked reminded me of the Civil War series by Ken Burns. Actual letters were read along with photographs (a relatively new thing at the time) from the war. The eloquence of many of these letters is astounding and powerful. Some of these solders only had basic educations (the 3 Rs), but since they all read they wrote beautifully. Anyway, Firefly, (less the Chinese) reminded me a little of this.

I will say, I first found this series by accident, partway through an episode somewhere in the middle, and I only caught the last 10 minutes on air, back when it was originally airing. I couldn't find out what show it was. TV Guide and the Newspaper's Program Guide just listed this time slot as "To Be Announced" or "To Be Determined" meaning in this 2 hour slot, neither publication knew what was going to be there. The following week in that time slot, nothing remotely related was in that time slot. So a handful of scenes lurked in the back of my mind for a number of years, before someone loaned me their DVD set a week before we were going to see a movie they were really excited about and told me "If you want to get the most out of the movie, you're going to want to watch these." I watched an episode, then another, then another. I was on the third DVD before I knew it. I later came to learn that more than one of the episodes were presented as possible pilot (episode 1), Since they were aired out of order, and at least a couple people indicated the first aired episode in some markets wasn't even one of the proposed pilots, plus the show moving around in days and time slots, the show was sabotaged in several ways. So it made more sense after the fact, that we got introduced to a character more than once.
As for seeing them out of order, I hate to say it, but that kind of puts you in the same boat as some of the people who saw all of it during its original airing. As I said, I only say 10 or 15 minutes of one episode, and never saw it again for years. By which time, I'd aged a bit, changed jobs, changed cities, and was in a completely different place in my life. But when I found this show for the first time, with a continuity of sorts, I fell in love. And I. for one, would like to thank you for being someone who admits when an "oops" happened. There are a lot of people out there who would try to "fake" their reaction and not admit to the truth that, "yes, I saw one episode, let me explain what happened."
Got to love when Jayne mouths off about Kaylee and the passenger "Simon" Mal gets to the point of telling Jayne "Walk away from this table, right now." Sets a tone, which is one of several reasons, I agree with this being the first episode to start with.
When you said that Simon had done nothing wrong, I must ask you to think about what Simon just said to Mal, and what you know about Mal, just from this episode.
    a. Mal would sell Simon out to the Alliance just for a pat on the head
    b. Mal should probably be working for the Alliance
    c. Mal fits the pro-[file of one of their lackeys]
Why did Mal punch Simon? [ Mind you I fully understand Simon's perspective, but from Mal's point of view, what kind of insults were those toe *him* ]

My understanding is there was an influx of executives at FOX which were having some type of internal feud and Firefly was one of the casualties of this fight. A similar thing happened with the Doctor Who movie which was a pilot for a new series. That series never happened because of internal battles. The problem was that FOX has different departments like Movies, TV series, Advertisements, Sports, and the like. I believe 2 hour pilots are considered movies and fall under the movie department and they seem to be at war with the TV series department.

As you said this was supposed to be the 1st episode on TV. FOX TV said this did not have enough action for a premier episode. It did not have the opening battle scene, the creator added it and this episode was broadcast at the end of it's short run. That means the next episode, I believe it is :Train Job" was the first episode broadcast. The last 2 episodes 13 and 14 were never broadcast, the series was cancelled after 12. 13 and 14 were added onto the DVD's. Now you know how Simon, River and Book joined the crew. How the rest got together will be shown later. I'm glad you are doing this series, I love it and when we get to the 14th episode I get a little misty because I know it's over. Let's see if you become a true Browncoat.

@@geraldtodd6633 Both can be true. More than one person can think the same thing. I don't know which is true, that Duaffy thought that Mal is too harsh or that Nathan did, or if Duaffy thought Mal is too harsh or the network did. Well we know first hand that Duaffy thought Mal was too harsh. So does that mean that Nathan and the network didn't? And if so then we get to I don't know which is true that Nathan thought that Mal WASN'T too harsh or did the network?
Joss' original intention was for Mal to be very harsh, closed off, humorless and bitter. And over time we'd see him be influenced by the crew. But one of the few times I can agree with the network. If you hire Nathan Fillan to play the character you got to have him show his great humor.

    Inara's big secret.
(It's good to know that there's no spoilers in this discussion!)
Inara is dying. She has an incurable disease, and not much time left to live. She's planning to see the 'verse before she goes, and end things on her own terms before the disease takes her quality of life (thus the little syringe "kit" you see in this episode).
This is the reason she left House Madrassa, baffling her peers. She was on track to become head mistress of the school, but suddenly and inexplicably packed her things and signed on with the crew of the somewhat shabby little transport 'Serenity'. She didn't want her friends, relatives or peers to watch her become sick and eventually pass away. She didn't want people mourning her, or trying to convince her to fight the disease while she wasted away. She wanted to go on her own terms.
As you see, the only things that she didn't count on was falling for Mal... or becoming part of a loving family with the crew of Serenity. That is why she eventually decides to leave... for all the same reasons she left House Madrassa. The moment she realizes that she actually loves Mal, and that he loves her... she knows he will suffer when she dies (as will the crew). She thinks it will be easier on everyone if she just leaves.

Actually, she's 100% correct. The episodes were aired out of order during the original run on FOX. Network executives (who had nothing to do with the actual show) didn't like the pilot because they wanted the humor and action of Whedon's other shows so they aired "The Train Job" as the first episode and swapped a few others as well. This episode, which was meant to be our introduction to the series, was aired as the 11th episode.

I'm a huge fan of this show and even I didnt really get sold on it till about episode 3 because of having no idea who the characters were do to the lack of backstory. By the fifth episode, you'll love ALL of the characters, and by the end of the series, you'll be ready to see the TV network execs strung up! It was an amazing tv show, with some of the best writing, and the cast has the most amazing chemistry. I'm sorry that you saw Trash out of order, and you'll understand why later on. This show was actually written to be seen in the order they were supposed to be shown in, as many of the episodes depend on things you've seen in earlier episodes. So try to forget Trash as best as you can.
