Thanks so much for this vid - and yes the photo quality is very nice. Can't tell you how wonderful it was to be able to take a half hour out of this terrible week to get out of my head and just enjoy something - and learn some good stuff while I was at it! Thanks again for what you do.
Great tutorial, this is actually a very good beginner project. Not much money is needed to start it up and you can test your skills at terrain/diorama/wtfe you want in mini skills. Hope to learn a lot from this channel! :) FINALLY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THE 6 P's!! Proper Planning Prevents _Pee_ Poor Performance! Diorama and scale model building a hobby of mine, only just picked it up from a family member who's been doing for 20+ years.
Firstly yes I enjoyed the video. I'm a new viewer and thought it looked amazing, can't wait to find a video where you do a 'proper' piece. Had a question about why did you paint the logs but you answered it already - ta
Hey Mel, if you split your sticks/logs in half, lengthwise with this application, you can double the quantity of your materials, or half the needed quantity, however you want to see it. This would also help it to adhere to the sides as there would be more surface area.
I think that it looks natural for what would happen if you were in a war with a short time to build a new bunker . What others don't understand is that you can't get a hold of all straight wood to build your bunker .
PVA for the logs works great if you have time to do one side at a time and lean them against something so gravity keeps the logs in place while they dry
Fabulous techniques! Thank you for this tutorial. The thing that occurred to me insofar as the logs themselves are concerned would be bamboo or palm tree type materials. As such, I think your garden plant material was perfect as is in its natural state. I would not have painted the logs at all. Leave them natural. Perhaps a tiny bit of painted highlights with dry brushing only? An American patrol of Marines a generation apart -- Pacific Theatre island in WWII with the bunker manned by Japanese troops or a scene from the jungles of Vietnam with the bunker providing a safe haven for NVA or VC troops. THANKS AGAIN!
I aggree, I would not have painted the logs (that requires to paint the walls in advance) Maybe a light varnish would be enough for the logs. THanks for sharing your mastering skills Greetings from BCN
28:25 That moment when you realize your weed has been showing the whole time so you have to pretend it's flock :p (Just kidding haha love your videos!)
Haha making terrain can be risky buisness ;p Keep up the great work! Your videos have helped me with my terrain techniques alot! I will send you a couple pics some time.
I knew a fellow that actually had a whole wall dedicated to a war scene with an untold amount of weed for foliage, had even been visited by the sheriff's dept. While they never noticed the incognito pot. At the same time telling him how much they appreciated his WW2 scene as they were VETs. Lol. If his story wasn't true it should be, lol.
I wouldve left the logs alone and not paint them. But rather take a small culinary propane torch and lightly scorch the logs a little bit. Then using your Elmer's PVA glue brush on a coat to seal them like a varnish or even brush on a matte wood varnish to seal them. That way if you get any drywall spackle on it you can easily wipe it off. That way you keep the natural look of the logs, etc. And to add a little extra detail to your log bunker. Think of like the trenches of WWI or other earthen bunkers and such. When it rains, and since the ground inside the bunker is just dirt. If you paint it a light color brown to show the ground is dry is good. But if you paint the dirt a dark brown then I would also dig out a small little puddle and then pour a small amount of EZ Water resin to show that there is still mud and water inside the bunker after a recent rain storm. Since many of those type of bunkers were common to have puddles of water in them giving the real battle conditions soldiers had to endure in combat living in those bunkers. Its amazing what just a little bit of detail can really bring it to life. Use your imagination when your building one of your dioramas. And most importantly have fun with it.
this video makes me started to make wargames diorama's. thanks for that! made likely the same, but more background around the bunker, like it was build in a hill. with some stones and trees, again! thanks, i like your video's
Mel would airbrushing have been easier for getting the tape covered rather than relying on gravity to take the paint on to it. Love these vids you've inspired me to try out foam board building... And I'm going to send some pics to the monthly round up
Incredible "how to" video. Great techniques ,easy to understand and duplicate with a bit of trial and error. 1 question. What tools would you recommend a beginner in making scenic models purchase before starting?
Great tutorial (as usual) only thing I'm wondering about is if anyone has done it with raw wood? As in, instead of painting the 'logs' just maybe putting a wash over them to tie it all together? I'd say you'd have to get as far as painting the whole thing first and then add the logs then wash it and flock it.
Great video thanks alot for the great video's........ Im learning allot from you and i enjoy building dioramas now..... I v had big accident zo this is such a nice hobbbby to do at home. but i always thought it was to difficult to do...im still in the learning process.but my firstt model is very nice. Thanks and greeetings good sir.
I would like to see u do more videos with using foam and hot wire tools, I just got the a set of hot wire from foam factory and looking for things to do.. I am dying to do something, my husband is a table top gamer and want to make something for him.
Will you be making a bunker/buildings set on Star Wars worlds like Endor or other overgrown lands? Some bunkers could be like this one, but more than likely would be metal in design. You have a vid for making Pillboxes, but i dont think these would be correct. If you hurry i could make something for when the new Star Wars Legion game comes out in February. :) :)
Really great job creating this bunker. The logs really are nice & TY for explaining hovv to prepare them as I've made the mistake of not "sterilizing" them & gotten bugs running around. Most of the materials can be gotten through recycleing except for spackle, glue, tape paint & flock/foliage ( except the lichen, ty for the idea but should that be "sterilized" as vvell & using the same technique ? ) so cost is much lovver than a store bought piece. One question, have you used sculpey ( lovv temp oven baked clay that turns to plastic & can be further sculped after baking) in any of your models ? I've found it to be relatively lovv cost & capable of being turned into anything needed including miniature figures ( depending on our sculpting ability ) & I'd ike your opinion of it & vvhat you find are its best uses . TY again for sharing your creativity .
Im starting up with making game tables for my models which are scale 1.72. What would you recommend i use for the paint which i can use as a undercoat before i start adding all the detail on.
@TheTerrainTutor, can the same be done with concrete bunkers instead of the log one? Just wanting to do a hidden concrete bunker surrounded by earth. Looks amazing by the way :)
What is the difference between using latex paint and cheap store acrylic paint? Is it dependant on the material it is painted on, or are there other reasons to use one over the other?
I was wondering, is there anything you might suggest mixing with filler/spackle to get some different effects? I've been experimenting with using Future Polish in any situation where normally you would use water (thinning paints, most obviously), and I was wondering what that might come out looking like if I used it to thin down some filler. Likewise, what are your thoughts on mixing filler/spackle with ink, paint, or grit?
Hey Mel great vid as always! One thing that threw me off was you used imperial measurements! Is that for the benefit for us US folks or has the UK finally seen the light? LOL!
well, the rest of the world is using the metric system, but it's easy to remember that one inch is about 2.5 centimeters (2.54), also helps having a direct comparison to the common GW model measurement.
The UK is not like Europe we still mix imperial and metric. Easy example, all motorway signs are in miles, but all liquids are in litres. So you'd drive a mile for 30ltrs of petrol.
Better grass quality and it’d be much better, it needs to look wild. It looks like fake football field grass when it’s supposed to be old. Old is grown out and wild, not what you have in the build. Just a quick tip :D
They always do but trying to keep them that way while doing the rest of the painting, weathering, flocking, sealing is a real challenge so I just paint them up with the rest
So folks, did you notice any improvement with the video quality? Fingers crossed you did! :-D
TheTerrainTutor looks really sharp, I do usually watch on my phone however so the TV may be helping. ps this is awesome
Yeah, I can tell it's more clear than it has been in the past.
those photo's look professional quality mate!
It looks great man
Definitely more clear video. well done!
Great job, my Dad was a field gunner in the Royal Canadian Army,And was on the Second wave of Juno Beach ,and made it through the war.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
6:06 Was the most perfectly timed notification ever.
At that moment, everybody checked their phone.
the blink "you got a message" sound was so perfectly timed.
You are totally the Vince Venturella of terrain building

Very enjoyable just watching you create pieces of art. Thank you for sharing.
I love the enthusiasm in your videos, great job my dude.
Cheers buddy
Another great video Mel! I'm still in love with the pink monitor...
Me too!
"Give it a quck rub. It always makes it better guys 😉"
Brilliant, professional video, chocked full of information! Thanks for your efforts and obvious talent!
I have no intention of building a log bunker,or anything for that matter. I did however find this oddly satisfying. 'Subbed'
As long as you enjoyed it bud!
I love your videos, been subscribed for a few years now and this is by far my favorite tutorial. Thanks for these awesome ideas and techniques!
Enjoyed this one Mel. It looked great. I don’t play the Pacific theatre but your Burma build has really tempted me.
Do it!
Incredible! I will added to my wargamesfor sure. Thanks for share this tutorial.

Welcome aboard buddy
Hey Mel,
If you hold the sides of your spartel bucket clean, the spartula will last for a long time and you can use the entire bucket 😀
Love the video as always! That little photo course really paid off. Big thumbs up!!!!
The maturity of the audience must have improved: no-one's mentioned Mel saying he was going to make a mound to bury his whatchacallit in
even I didn't spot that one lol
You did
Amazing Job!!! Congratulations.
Outstanding video and presentation.
Dogwood sticks work fantastic for this (red woody stems etc)
Another great vid Mel, thanks a lot!!!
My Germans need a log bunker now. And trenches ;-)
Awesome videos especially for beginners like me to learn. Thank you so much.
Hope it helps you mate
Another excellent tutorial Mel, thanks so much!
Awesome piece of wargame kit.
Firstly yes I enjoyed the video. I'm a new viewer and thought it looked amazing, can't wait to find a video where you do a 'proper' piece. Had a question about why did you paint the logs but you answered it already - ta
Check my projects playlist mate
Fantastico....sei veramente bravo i tuoi modellini sono dei piccoli capolavori.
Damn, Mel, another great video. Enjoy your new PC and the photography courses.
These bunkers are completely bonkers! ;)
Cheers
another great vid . cool bunker bro , very nice . will make . thanks .
Very cool! Might want to think about using a black wash on those logs before you add the flocking
Hey Mel, if you split your sticks/logs in half, lengthwise with this application, you can double the quantity of your materials, or half the needed quantity, however you want to see it. This would also help it to adhere to the sides as there would be more surface area.
Yep, easy to do with these but twigs/dowels etc would be much harder mate
Great video Mel keep up the great work
I think that it looks natural for what would happen if you were in a war with a short time to build a new bunker . What others don't understand is that you can't get a hold of all straight wood to build your bunker .
Good use of sports direct mugs
Indeed

Agreed but I paint the logs to help them bind to the interior walls ;-)
Nice job. Looks really good.
Superb video this - thanks fella!
Welcome mate

That moment when you realize your weed has been showing the whole time so you have to pretend it's flock :p
(Just kidding haha love your videos!)
I've been raided for making clump foliage in the past, 8 officers, with firearms
Wow, terrain making to its extremes!
Haha making terrain can be risky buisness ;p Keep up the great work!
Your videos have helped me with my terrain techniques alot!

"Its blended it it in all bloody lovely !" - I talk like that sometimes, im from North Somerset XD
I'd like to be from north somerset :-(
Great vid Mel. Great quality :)

Yes, video quality is better! That pink monitor really pops now! :)
Cheers bud
Absolutely helpful. Just earned yourself a new sub!
Mel would airbrushing have been easier for getting the tape covered rather than relying on gravity to take the paint on to it. Love these vids you've inspired me to try out foam board building... And I'm going to send some pics to the monthly round up
Oh yes but remember, I keep the lets makes as simple as possible materials/tools wise mate
Incredible "how to" video. Great techniques ,easy to understand and duplicate with a bit of trial and error.
1 question. What tools would you recommend a beginner in making scenic models purchase before starting?
Cheers buddy, there's guides for all that in the back to basics playlist mate

Absolutely love your channel mate, now my terrain doesn't look like it came out of the rear end of a pigeon
Awesome matey
*gasp* Styrofoam, and to think I slightly upgraded to the more expensive foam sheets for insulation due to your tastes. Glad I can always go back.
Posh now are we ;-)
so much innuendo hahaha, very informative cheers :D
Fun fact if you still have it white like you dont make dark the foam you can do a finnish or german vs soviet thing
You are so talented
Thank you
"Always give it a quick rub, always makes it better, guys"...
Sound advice!
nice, you have given me some inspiration, just gonna get some material and start i guess, cheers from Sweden
Great video
thanks alot for the great video's........
Im learning allot from you and i enjoy building dioramas now.....

Glad the videos are helping you mate
Very talented!
Thanks!
I really like what you did beautiful job
Nice work..!
Your gaming table must look boss
This will help me make bunkers for my Astra Militarum Forces, But i will most probably make it rocky Sand/dirt based climate and not so green
Loved it, just thought it looked more 'natural' before you painted the logs. Just my opinion. Great vid tho.
brilliant mate.
Your buddy's foot prints are a good defence when you have no other defence
Harsh!
Awesome video keep it up
Thanks buddy!
U are very welcome
That could have been a really cool snow bunker
I love your videos, you might need some variation with the flocking, all your builds look like they are in the normandy ;)
I would like to see u do more videos with using foam and hot wire tools, I just got the a set of hot wire from foam factory and looking for things to do.. I am dying to do something, my husband is a table top gamer and want to make something for him.
And who doesn't enjoy a lovely mound?
Exactly!
looks good buddy.
Robert
this is a really cool piece I really want to build it. What is the brand name of the flock that you use?
Loved this video too. Can't wait to start my war diarama. Question, wouldn't the logs look better natural than painted all brown?
I prefer to paint
I'm working on winter terrain for Dust Tactics , how can I make cracked ice effect and snow patches and dead bushes on winter bunker?
Check the snow and ice tutorial mate
Thank you

Not unless FFG give me approval mate
Is the expanded pvc foam board the stuff that has paper on the outside? I guess we'd call it foam core in the US?
No, it's like that but it's made for plastic, checkout foamex mate
You can buy foamboard in the US at the Dollar Tree stores.
very nice vid, thanks for it.
your my terrain god!

Can I ask what bush your growing?
What is the difference between using latex paint and cheap store acrylic paint? Is it dependant on the material it is painted on, or are there other reasons to use one over the other?
latex is cheaper and thicker giving a better coat, acrylic is a finer pigment, so good for washes and detailing
Is that Australian Cricket Team grade sandpaper you are using there or just some cheap stuff?
ooooh, still burns!
Hello Which paint did you use to paint the wood and the floor of this bunker?
Pretty excellent 👌🏻
Belo trabalho! Adorei! Parabéns!!
I was wondering, is there anything you might suggest mixing with filler/spackle to get some different effects? Beyond paint, no idea mate, give it a go
Hey Mel great vid as always! One thing that threw me off was you used imperial measurements! Is that for the benefit for us US folks or has the UK finally seen the light? LOL!
You do realise we invented the imperial system in 1824, that's why it's called the Imperial system mate ;-)
lmao yep! I just didn't know yall still had a working understanding of it or that it was commonly used.

Better grass quality and it’d be much better, it needs to look wild. It looks like fake football field grass when it’s supposed to be old. Old is grown out and wild, not what you have in the build. Just a quick tip :D
Im going to be planting a black eyed susan... JUST for harvesting hobby supplies.
I thought the logs looked really good unpainted.
They always do but trying to keep them that way while doing the rest of the painting, weathering, flocking, sealing is a real challenge so I just paint them up with the rest
Excellent
wooo, no time for sleep
looking nice mel, how long do you reckon this took to build?
The build was about 2-3hrs, filming'editing a lot more lol
