Oh Mel popped up on FYP. Gotta increase engagement. Much love Mel!
Mel is the King of finding a way to make incredible terrain cheaply. Mel is to terrain as Vince Venturella is to miniature figures.
Czech hedgehogs are the cross obstacles. They are mainly anti-tank obstacles. Love the tutorial!
Yeah, it starter as a general obstacles vid but there were too many tank obstacles to cover so I'll do them in a different vid mate ;-)
They are called Spanish Riders in Danish
Thanks for the info, Czech hedgehogs are obviously invented in the Czechoslovakia
Loving these videos, had to sneak out of bed (didn't want to wake the missus) and make some quick barbed wire terrain since I had the stuff at home and was just way too much in the mood to make some obstacles after watching this vid.
Hey, I don't want your wife thinking I'm your bit on the side! ;-D
If yo take 3 of the hedgehogs with only two of the sprew bits and add one large sprew bit it could be one of the things on the beaches to stop landing craft and tip, they're pretty cool! Nice job Mel!
they're called 'Rommel's asparagus'. and dont forget to top off ever 3rd pole with a mine!
This video has featured in the Warlord Games newsletter, congrats Mal. Hope it gets you some new followers, and reminds some old ones you're still around.
Awesome sauce :-D
slag om engeland
Congrats Mel on getting in the Warlord Games newsletter. For those fine fiddly bits have you considered a wax pencil?
Tile spacers glued together would make good hedgehogs for 15mm tank games.
Regarding the mines, you could model scatterable mines delivered by aircraft, artillery or ground vehicles which would naturally be laying above ground.
It’s look fantastic when it’s done
Other half: Darling why are you rummaging through the bins?
Me: I accidentally threw away a tonne of models!
Stumbled upon your videos last week and it’s really caught my attention! Iv just made my first pill box and a few fences. After watching this I think a few rows of barbwire is my next job! Last week was my first look into war games thanks to you and I just love the modelling aspect!
This was one of the first videos I've ever seen on TH-cam, glad to see this channel is still up and running! great models lad, amazing work, and it gets consistently better!
Nice to see these type of tutorials for someone just getting into this kind of terraining and modeling!
Stumbled back across this tutorial while I had your channel playing in the background while doing some terrain, and ended up finding inspiration and starting a couple of minefield strips using this technique, but in 15mm!
LOVE your "Let's Make" series!!!
Me too
Been looking forward to this video since the making. Barbed wire & Hedgehogs look OUTSTANDING Mel! Will try both!
You came first !!!
I have been asking Commissar Gamza and RubbishInRubbishOut if they would make an imperial guard or space marines minefield and I tried to tricked them with that it never has be made here on youtube before and they could become the first to make that terrain ... ( I know that the headline is Battlefield Basics Series and not warhammer 40k, but who gives a s*** )
But you beat them, and thank you very much for that ...( because I do not believe that they would make one) ;-)))
So thank you very much for this inspiring video, and please let you'r " Let's Make" videos come flowing like a river for there are great work, really inspiring and so instructive.
Thanks for showing and keep up the good work ;-)
It's not a race but thanks anyway mate ;-)
Great stuff as usual Mel. I've used your link for the wire and will get on with making the bases ready for when the wire arrives.
Cracking vid Mel; they all really look the part, very impressive.
Another great vid as always Mel, really enjoying the Lets Make series, I really like the mines, very nicely done.
Oh and the tank mines were called Tellermines which means Plate mine due to its shape and size. and the configuration your using is called a Mixed Density mine field that was used for the event more than one category walked into it like a infantry platoon with armor support for example. The arming weight for the Teller mine is 100-180 kg and the s-mine is 7 kg.
another great video Mel always giving me the urge to build 👍
Quite often they would also rap barbed wire across the Czech hedgehogs so infantry couldn't get past. There was also a wire thing with explosives on that would be held high and cover large fields to stop gliders and paratroopers
That'd look good as a terrain piece
Awesome as always mel
I think you do occasionally see mines, tank mines on hard roads for instance, or old mines in Afghanistan or or France,. after heavy rain after washing away to top soil, or dust-storms.
You can also just fence of an area with wire, or bury them for a more realistic effect. Or one friend of mine (lol) buried an LED in in flock to flash read which was cool. ^.^
The led thing sounds so cool
Yaaaas... This is exactly what I was looking for
You've inspired my wife and I to use "CRACK ON!" throughout our daily lives... Love the videos too, great technique lol
That's friggin awesome! :-D
Great video as always Mel. Full of good advice and top tips. Many thanks mate,
Joe
You can rust the barbed wire easily by just leaving it in a bath of distilled vinegar for a couple of days. No need to paint of wash it. Just let it actually rust!
I prefer the control paint gives you and it's a lot quicker and permanent mate
TheTerrainTutor I like the zero effort 100℅ realism aspect of using vinegar.
Dude the mines with the rod sticking up is called a Schrapnellmine/springmine or simply bouncing betty, its a bounding blast mine that when walked on it arms and when the step off it explodes lifting it up to about waist-chest level then a second charge explodes sending 360 ball bearings, 360 degrees. Its basically cuts the person in half at the waist taking limbs, genitalia with it. hope that was helpfull.
This and " Let's make : Dragon's Teeth Tank Traps # Sandbag Barricades Bunkers # Battlefield Craters # Trenches, Emplacements & Breast Works ...
I have seen them all like 15-20 times, they are without doubt the best "how to do" wargaming video's I have ever seen ... !!
So well illustrated and very well Explained, really really inspiring ...
Perhaps one day you will make a series with the "same" again but this time with a urban / city theme... ;-)))
Many many thanks for you'r allways instructive video's, keep up the good work.
And thanks for showing ... ;-)))
Cheers bud
I love the terrain mines
These are fantastic! This is so helpful for me as I get involved in Gaslands and gives me a load of ideas for terrain! Just one suggestion though... for the rods on the mines, maybe a set of tweezers? xD
Lovely! awesome work..
Nice job mate
Suggestion: ad a few little bumps (like small sandhills) to the baseplates to break up the uniform flatness? A bit of undulation to the terrain? Great vid 😸
Sure!
Such a money saver! Thank you very much!
Here to help mate
Great work!
THANK YOU! This has helped me so much!
Glad it did mate
"So, what I'm going to do is find my little hole and force it in" Absolute best line
damit yous 😂🤣
Love the videos! Has definitely changed the way I think a bout building terrain. I was wondering what kind of hobby flock you use. I usually use static grass but the stuff your using looks like it could handle a model standing on it a lot better without the flock falling off.
I used javis premium fine scatter mate ;-)
Thanks man! Keep up the good work!
this is fantastic ! thanks Mel .. i would like to put in a special request as well . could you show us how to do fox holes and OP/ command tent type thing?
Did you see the sandbag bunker lets make?
superb
Mine field is my favorite
Would it not be easier/safer to cut the notches in the I-beam BEFORE cutting off an 8mm length?
Also, for tank mines, old fashioned thumb tacks, with button tops, might make a smaller diameter mine.
Just a thought - those tile spacers would make good cross-pieces for railings, such as the Romans used for watch towers and balconies. Perhaps for half-timbered houses as well.
Probably lol. Nice ideas bud
very interesting you put the barbed wire in the cheval de frise / spanish rider frame
Thanks for the info, I was just going off an old ww1 photo mate
All very good what about dragons teeth anti tank fortifications have you done any of these?
Yep, vid after this in the lets make playlist mate ;-)
Greetings my friend...nice video.... very interesting...regards to down under.
Caltrops were originally thrown down to attack cavalry. Shaka the Zulu chief had his warriors stamp flat African thorns which resembles caltrops. Any (warriors) that screamed were clubbed to death.
Yes...they`re called Hedgehogs! Another obstacle you may want to look at is tetrahedons...look like hollow pyramids made of concrete : )
Hey. Loving your videos. I just got into wargaming and I enjoy making things for it. The problem I've run into is that when I put the pva glue (elmers) on, whether its watered down or not, it causes the base board (same stuff you're using) to warp and then wobble on the table. Any quick hints? or direction to one of your videos in particular that might address this?
Thanks.
Hey mate just send some funds your way you helped me make some obstacles which turned out awesome hope to see more content like this in the future. Would be cool to do some terrain for Bolt action.
wow this is awesome
Ur the master I'm using a few of your tips if ok there amazing just finished a German 251 halftrack but want to make it into a communications vehicle the last 3 kits iv bought they all came with figures bloody nightmare heads rolling away literally lol love the hedgehogs getting a fkak 38 tomorrow and finishing up my 2 trench kits just figures to to so much accessories with the down to bolt cutters check I'm gonna put them lol but got a separate kit all different ammo boxes all sizes n shapes so use some for storage for all these tools lol
just so you know things like traps mines etc is only put down if its discovered buy a unit
Evening I hope your well, I've only recently come across your fantastic video's, may I say you do a fantastic job. I do have a question for your good self. Have you done any video's for scenery on a Super small scale IE- N Guage model railways.
Thanks in advance
Not as yet mate
What does one use for barbed wire? I've been thinking to use the wire from a spiral notebook.
Hi mel i new to this hobby please can you tell me where to buy that security wire to make barbed wire ,?
The greatest infantry obstacle is enemy grenadiers
*british grenadiers intensiefies*
Does anyone know where to get the double wrapped wire in uk, i have tried to search for it but all that comes up is american products or bike chains
I bought it from this site on eBay 100 meters don't know if they do smaller lengths www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201546000638
Excellent tutorial and beautiful pieces!
But the triple bars (czech hedgehogs?) are more of an anti-armor/anti-vehicle device then actualle effective against infantry, right?
Yeah, it started as a general obstacles vid mate ;-)
When used as a hard point for barbed/razor wire they’re effective enough.
im getting in to war gaming and i love your videos and can somone please
tell me what he is using for base plate ?
Palite mate
thank you i found somthing similar and it is looking great, can you please make a video about making easy city buildings... ?
In the urban techniques playlist mate
thank you so mutch I love your channel keep going no matter what the haters say !!!
Hey mate why dont you make any molds of what you make like the bases..? You can make molds and then melt down the spruces. Thus making plastic molds.
Mold making is a whole different adventure mate
Far point.
where do you get the double wire security ? what nr gauge is it thanks
Where do you get flat PVC for your bases? Could old credit cards be cut up and used?
Scrap from sign printers mate
Do you make your wash? (How do you make it?) or do you
But it? (If so where?)
He makes it his self. saw it on his video about sandbag emplacements. I beileve don't qoute me on it, but I believe he gets black acrylic and brown acrylic and he adds water until it's quite translucent - ish. Please correct me anyone
That's pretty much it but there's vids on it in the back to basics playlist mate
What did you use as the basing material here? Eva foam?
EPvc foamboard
Czech hedgehogs, or Spanish riders or tank traps
Or hedgehog tank traps
Hi Great Vids,
What scale are these for, As i Play Warhammer 40K (28mm 1/35 )?
28mm
26:22 find my little hole,... and force it in,... slowly
;-D
can you tell me which size the i-beam is in mm?
We would watch you get your fingers all superglued if your melon wasn't in the way. :P My players are going to hate me. I run D&D in a world that has passed on from ours, so they come across stuff from our now occasionally.. I'm thinking mine field next.
That's pure evil! love it!
I have set up a D&D campaign that is 1000+ years after a nuclear war.....
What paints do you use? I have been using Vallejo.
What scale do you normally work to? I bet you've said it but I've just found your channel and not sure. is it 28mm or roughly somewhere around there? Wanting to use your techniques for warhammer 40k.
Usually he works in 28mm scale.
*eh yeah!*
Weren't the hedgehogs made for anti-tank purposes instead of anti-infantry? Looks good none-the-less and fits well into the scenery
Probably :-D
What is the name of the wire you use
their Czech hedgehogs-ooh hes put in ok
Hey Mel, I’m having warping issues with my
e-pvc once I apply paint and such. Got a solid solution for this problem?
paint the bottom with pva, it'll warp it straight again
Your work is fictional and well done. What colors do you use? Send me the names of colors
Colours are in the video mate
What kind of paints do you use?
House paints mate
What are you using for the bases? Foam Board?
epvc
Expanded? PVC?
Yep
hi, for a tank scale 1/50 i need figurines soldiers 1/48 or 1/35?
I'd say 1/50, same as your tank
Hi do u have any links for the double wire can't find it anywhere
www.ebay.co.uk/i/201546000638?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&itemid=201546000638&targetid=540657981261&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=1007121&poi=&campaignid=1669190333&mkgroupid=67214010920&rlsatarget=pla-540657981261&abcId=578896&merchantid=101716110&gclid=CjwKCAjwtuLrBRAlEiwAPVcZBpe43fNFb4jB0K0FhDDXZqXNmAORZYEo2sBkKLYVubNNdmEeiyMhxBoCTAwQAvD_BwE
what scale is this built for?
28mm I beileve
any just depends how big you make them
grant tube sort of! I model in 1/144 scale. This kinda stuff is only gonna be a few mm tall. I'd need to come up with different materials due to scale. Lucky for me, Mel's principles still apply.
Show 'em you then?
need to make dragons teeth also
like em one day got do it ;;;;;]]]]
Abatis in the Napoleonic era.
Not entaierly sure of What you mean when you talking about making a extra long wire wher do i glue it?
To the small bases
Tank traps are the first objects made Incase you didn’t know that
Or hedgehogs as he puts in editing
Also the maginot line was very anti-infantry and anti-tank too bad they could just go around it
You know you're a fuckin' genius Mel yeah!!!! what moron down votes this?!?!?
I watched the tank traps video first followed by this...
Now, any particular reason you haven't used hot glue in either of the videos for glueing you stuff to the bases? Commissar Gamza does a neat little Trash Terrain series and he uses a hot glue gun for most jobs, is it personal preference or is the super glue just better??
I try to keep my tutorials as simple as possible tool wise, I don't want people thinking they need a glue gun to make these pieces mate
What Was the name on the barbdwire?
Doubble seling??
Wher do i buy that??
Double wrap security seal on ebay
You can make your own by getting thin wire... Get two long pieces and clamp them in a vine or vise grips... Put the other two ends in the chuck of an electric drill.... Turn the grill on and they'll twist together perfectly !
The criss-crossy ones are Czech- oh wait...
Dude, you dont own a pair of tweezers? lol
I think so .... ;-)
Wher do i get those H beams??
Plastruct
Smert as heck
Great tips...... but you do say yeah alot.....yeah. Gets a bit annoying, sorry
It's called a verbal tic
busy weekend coming up
