I do think making a vid on the Pens almost moving in the early 2000s is a must at this point since it’s crazy how one of the most iconic teams in the league nearly left it’s city to go somewhere else.
I lived in Lawrence, KS at the time, and the possibility of the Penguins moving to Kansas City created quite the buzz on local sports radio, especially as KC was building a new downtown arena, Sprint Center (now renamed T-Mobile Center), in the hopes of landing an NHL or NBA team.
Fun fact about the 87-88 regular season and due to he NHL's divisional format at the time, Toronto made the playoffs with a 21-49-10 regular season record ( the second-worst record in the NHL) while the Pens went 36-35-9
The Patrick Division that season was insanely tight, only 7 points separated the 1st-place Islanders( 88 pts )from the Penguins( 81 pts )who wound up last in the division by 1 pt.
@@ckendall67 Between the race down to the wire in the Patrick ( the Devils went 7-0-1 to beat out the Rangers and Penguins )and the tank bowl turned playoff race in the Norris 87-88 was one of the more unpredictable regular seasons of the decade which saw very static league standings. The playoffs that year were also insane in that the Devils went all the way to the conference finals in their first-ever playoff appearance, Boston finally won a playoff series against Montreal, and then there were the controversial moments in the last two rounds such as the doughnut incident and replacement ref fiasco in games 3/4 of the Wales Conference finals and then the power outage in game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals and the NHL's decision to move right on to a game 5 in Edmonton.
I just looked at the standings and 6 teams with fewer points than the penguins made the playoffs that year including 3 from the Norris. Pittsburgh would’ve had home ice advantage in the first round if they had played in the Norris.
I wonder how much of the communication issues were rooted in the Penguins not hiring a translator If Bobby Valentine and Trey Hillman could lead their teams to Japan Series titles (and in Hillman's case, a Korean Series title as well) despite the language barrier, communication might not've been the only issue. Dan Frawley ended up going from Pittsburgh down to the AHL team in Rochester, where he earned a spot in the Amerks Hall of Fame. He liked it here enough to come out of retirement twice. Also, guess who was the coach in Sherbrooke when the Canadiens blew a 3-2 series lead and lost Games 6 and 7 of the AHL Calder Cup finals at home to those Amerks before trying his luck in the NHL? No hints, now....

Their 1st big goal that eventually helped catapult the Devils to being one the more successful teams in the league for the better part of the next quarter-century that followed.
Before they drafted Mario they were in the depths of the standings, they were perhaps on the verge of relocating, until they finally landed the 1st overall pick & '84....& their fortunes were changed forever.
Tree, one of my earliest memories was the game where 66 went off for four goals including the winner in OT in a must-win game at Washington where he rendered Lange speechless. Well, evidently, given that a tie was useless, 66 is arguing with Creamer on the bench IN FRENCH to pull the damn goalie but Creamer was so stupid AND headstrong that he wouldn't do it. So....66 simply took matters into his own hands. The Creamer and Ubriaco eras from 87-90 were something to behold, my friend, when you're scoring AND giving up four and a half goals per game.
Coming from a Commanders fan… Dude playing for the tie with the playoffs on the line is some Ron Rivera “You mean we could be eliminated?” shit that I never thought happened before then.
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that the Penguins hired David Quinn as an assistant coach. Ya know, the guy who led the Rangers and Sharks to hell? Yeah that guy. Have fun Penguins!
I can't help but wonder what would've happened if the Pens actually did make the playoffs? Who am I kidding, they probably would've been swept in round 1. Lemieux can only play superhuman for so long ya know
I'm old enough to remember all of this vividly. Just to give you an idea how much a joke the Pens were, there was a major newspaper whose sports section routinely referred to the Pens as the "Penquins." Yes, that's the letter 'Q;' yes, I wrote them about it; no, they didn't stop doing it, because no one gave a damn about hockey in the 80s, much less Penguins hockey. Jerseys? You wanted a jersey? You had to mail order it from a Canadian company and then wait three months because it took them that long to procure one because no one cared enough about the Pens to keep them in stock.
It does make one wonder what would have been if DeBartolo didn't veto the Moog trade. Esposito wound up trading for Tom Barrasso the next year, but would the Penguins have made the playoffs with Moog in goal? He was certainly a better and more consistent option than Guenette, Meloche, Riggin and Pieterangelo.
if he'd been with the Nordiques or Montreal he may have had a legitimate shot at having his name on Lord Stanley's cup. Hell, if Pittsburgh had bothered with a propper translator they may have had a much better outcome.
Only real Penguins fans can appreciate moments like these. I know it sounds like a cliché, but the old saying does ring true "if you don't love me at my worst, you don't deserve me at my best". It's usually when teams reach their lowest points, either cause of rebuilds or PR blunders, do you actually see the fans that give a damn. Even as a rival fan (look at my icon), I want the Penguins to be competitive. The only thing I ask for is no more "LOL Browns" jokes from their fan base, cause come on, it's low hanging fruit at this point. Is it too much to ask for new memes and jokes to poke fun at?

Don’t let this distract you from the fact that the dolphins scored a pick six from the opposing teams 1st yard line
The Hell Mary!
An accomplished head man at every level of hockey he coached... No pun intended.
1991 will forever live in infamy in the State of Hockey it started the beginning of the end for the North Stars
So Utree on another note how about Paul Skenes for the Pirates.
Must-watch baseball every time he pitches.
Coming from a Commanders fan… Dude playing for the tie with the playoffs on the line is some Ron Rivera “You mean we could be eliminated?” shit that I never thought happened before then.
Fun fact, Pierre Creamer is Mike Bossy’s brother in law
Funny that this gets uploaded as I'm in the middle of a Quebec Trip (stopped in Montreal first, now in Quebec City)!

Did the announcer just say
"And Mario Lemieux takes a fucking stride"?
Yoi can tell Tree really enjoyed making this. If only he could do hockey videos full-time if his NFL content wasn't so popular...
Oh, I definitely enjoyed making this one. Freed me from the grind of Haters Guide/Current Events stuff.
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that the Penguins hired David Quinn as an assistant coach. Ya know, the guy who led the Rangers and Sharks to hell? Yeah that guy. Have fun Penguins!
Rags and sharks couldn't bring a cup home though 😂
@@hugh2hoob668 bruh under David Quinn who was an awful coach? How are they gonna win under a guy who doesn’t know how to lead a team at all?
Goaltending in the 80s was so mickey mouse, like I'm screaming at this guy to go butterfly at 9:03

That’s how it feels when you visit the Department of Redundancy Department.
"Tell your Mah, Tell your Pah You're goin back to Arkansas!"
Was my fav Lange line 😅
Hearing Mike lang at the beginning after watching this year’s cup is such a big difference
I'll never forget Bill Clement referring to him as Pierre "Non-Dairy" Creamer to Chris Berman on Sports center before a game in 1987-88
Go Make Bicycle is now being integrated into my vocabulary
Tree and the legendary dramatic interpretations.
If this is close as we to another UT look at insane team owners, I’m here for it.
