We see wild porcupines a lot in our forest here along the river, and one of the four we saw today was a huge blonde porcupine like Teddy! This of course reminded me I desperately needed to watch videos. The cockatoo screaming away in the background of this one also cracks me up- although I reckon it's a good deal less amusing if you're in the same room! And I think my little conure is loud >.< He's got nothin' on a 'too.

Dear Zooniversity: (1) Are his vocalizations at all consistent with speech? Have people tried to teach him words? Does he have a working internal vocabulary (like a dog or cat)? What are his mental abilities/ equivalent human age? I would swear that on one of the popular vids, the little dude is saying ' pumpkin' over and over.

At 0:10 he answers a question with the words “Yeah, I did” and at 0:20 he says “It’s all right”. So decide for yourself! Is Teddy the talking porcupine?
Rodents in general aren't thought of as being especially intellectual as far as animals go, so a verbal language is probably right out. This may be the porcupine equivalent of a tiger's chuffing, a dog's panting or a cat purring. An involuntary sound they make when especially happy.
RXdash78 - You left out the magic. I'll bet that you never even clapped for Tinkerbell when you were younger.
To be fair not all rodents are alike in the intellectual department. While the average house mouse isn’t too bright some species of rats are good problem solvers, hamsters often get attached to their owners, and Beavers know how to engineer dams, and porcupines have been known in the wild to be quick learners and can quickly find their way back to an area even after a trap and release 30 miles away. Porcupines in general are poorly understood creatures, so who knows how far they go?
