  • @stagerat
    @stagerat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +130

    Yeah, Patti was 100% in the right on this one. Two polite reminders was more than enough chance for that audience member to get their act together; after all, it's really not at all difficult to just make sure your mask is on properly and if you don't want to be wearing a mask then...just don't go into a space that has a mask mandate in place. That audience member doesn't have a leg to stand on with regards to this, especially since they're the one who seemed to escalate the situation.

      I think Patti was excessive. She acted like the mask was not on on the person. But not wore correctly. And the audience member did put their mask over their nose when corrected. I would have just ignored the action after.

    • @stagerat
      @stagerat ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@obsidianromance34 Wearing a mask means *wearing it properly* . The mask mandates were in place for a reason and a literal child could tell you how they're supposed to be worn; the cast couldn't wear masks while performing but they - along with most others who work in a theatre setting for a living - were doing pretty much everything they could to keep themselves and each other safe because *no one* in that community wanted another Broadway shutdown. That also meant putting a huge amount of trust in the audience to follow what relatively rules were asked of them since a COVID positive person or an asymptomatic carrier in the audience not wearing their masks correctly put the entire cast at unnecessary risk...which then puts the show at risk.
      When you enter a place of business, you implicitly agree to abide by its rules or leave if you feel you can't do so - when you go to eat at a restaurant, you don't just barge in, climb on the tables and start eating someone else's food while grunting like a pig; if you did, you would at the very least be asked to leave. A theatre is no different; it has rules and when you go to see a performance there, you agree to abide by those rules for the duration of the time you're in the building or you face the consequences of not doing so, whether that's being asked to leave by the staff or being called out by a cast member. If the audience member couldn't be bothered or didn't want to just keep wearing the damn thing as it's supposed to be worn, they shouldn't have gone to the show. End of. And sure, they put it up over their nose the first time Patti confronted them about it; if they'd, again, actually bothered to make sure they *continued* wearing it properly, Patti wouldn't have had to call them out again. The audience member escalated the situation and Patti had every right to be pissed off at them for their blatant disrespect of the rules, her fellow performers and herself. No matter how you try and spin it, the audience member is the one in the wrong here.

      @@stagerat People don’t wear the mask properly in general, I seen this in real life. Sorry it was an overreaction.

    • @stagerat
      @stagerat ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@obsidianromance34 I've seen it too. We all have. It's still no excuse, not even close to one. "Other people steal stuff, so why don't I just help myself to this TV..?"; it's not great logic, is it? Like I said, when you enter a place of business, you agree to follow *their* rules. The mask mandates the theatre had in place required people to wear their mask so that it covered their mouth *and nose* . It's a very simple instruction to follow and one that was needed in order to keep the cast and those that worked at the theatre safe; it's not an overreaction to tell someone to follow the rules if it's putting people's safety at risk. There are plenty of people I know who literally cannot wear a mask properly for various reasons for the duration of a show plus a post-show talkback - if the audience member was like them, then they shouldn't have gone to the theatre in the first place just as those I know sacrificed plenty of theatre tickets coming out of lockdown because they *knew* they couldn't follow the mask mandates; if they could wear a mask, then the only other thing we can conclude was that they *deliberately* broke the rules. Neither option reflects particularly well on them.
      Patti told them the first time to cover their nose, and they did so clearly *by that point* they understood how they should be wearing the mask, if they somehow didn't understand before. They then either pulled the mask back down or allowed it to slip down and didn't bother pulling it back up again which would take all of a second and very little effort. At which point she asked them again (because, again, the mask mandate was in place specifically to keep those who work in the theatre safe including the cast), and the audience member then decided the appropriate reaction was to argue with and insult her. Patti shouldn't have even had to ask the second time because either the audience member should have just worn the mask properly after having been told how they ought to have been wearing it (which would have been ideal for everyone concerned) or else the theatre management should have sent Front of House staff to deal with it, likely by kicking them out for failing to abide by the rules of their business. It's a failing on the theatre's part that Patti had to call out the behaviour again after she'd already drawn attention to the issue. But like I said, no matter which way you spin it, the audience member was the one in the wrong here.

    Even if actors aren't wearing masks on stage, I'm pretty sure that every dresser and stagehand backstage is masked up. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but when Rob McClure steps backstage unmasked wearing men’s clothing, the big team of dressers who get him into a woman’s outfit and an old lady wig and prosthetics to transform him into Mrs. Doubtfire in 30 seconds all have masks on. They take this seriously.

  • @pingidjit

    When you enter a place of business, you agree to abide by the rules of that business. After getting 2 warnings those people should have been told to leave and escorted out if need be. Patti Lupone shouldn't have HAD to shout at them about it. That is a failing on the theaters part.
    However, she is completely right. Keeping the staff and audience safe is vastly important to keep Broadway going. Its her livelyhood. She has every right to defend it from jerks who don't want to follow the rules and then have the audacity to shout rudely at one of the performers who simple wants them to follow the rules THEY AGREED TO.

    The way I see this situation is like this: Patti and all of the other actors on that stage are doing a job. Personally, I don't like Patti LuPone but she was absolutely right. She tried to politely address the issue and the person decided to be a jerk in response, so Patti escalated. I probably wouldn't have blown up quite as much as she did because I tend to just not do that but I understand why she did.
    There's somewhat of a valid argument in asking why she wasn't wearing a mask. sort of. And she responded to that properly as well. She said if you want me to put one on I'll put one on. But the difference between the performers and the audience is that they are COVID, tested every single day and follow very strict protocols if they do test positive. In New York. The quarantine rule is 5 days but the Broadway Union states 10 days So Broadway performers stay out for an additional 5 days to make sure they're keeping everyone else safe. Broadway audiences are not tested and they don't even have to be vaccinated anymore. So there is a much more significant risk from an audience member than there is from a performer.
    And the audience is distanced from the performers but not from each other.

    As someone who goes to Broadways shows currently, when you buy your ticket you agree to follow the theater's covid safety rules. they don't let you into the theater at some shows if you don't have your mask on and don't ask them for one. all the ushers walk around with a package of masks to give to any patrons that magically lose them during the show. you are only allowed to not have it on properly while eating/drinking. When you buy tickets online, you have to check that box agreeing to it in order to check out. That's how Broadway works today and has since it started re-opening last year.

    Where does Patti think the money comes from? The producer only makes money if the audience pays for entry. Otherwise, the show fails. As someone who’s worked retail I gotta say “Nobody is better than anyone else.” The customer doesn’t know everything, but courteousness to the customer goes a long way. I agree that the person should have put on a mask, but Patti’s response is really vacuous and it could potentially hurt the show if people think she’s an awful human. There had to be a better way to handle that.

    • @yayshowvids6427
      @yayshowvids6427 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Incorrect. The producer invests in the show and pays the salaries whether or not the show is successful. Most shows never recoup their initial investment. Patti said Chris Harper pays her because that’s right. Until Chris Harper recoups his investment, it’s him paying, not us.
