@@HiViNywschannel The US dime (about 2.0 g) was a quick fix to make sure that a small added weight would be enough to balance a rather light cartridge (the now-discontinued Goldring Elektra reviewed on this channel). Pro-Ject provided a small metal spacer for their tonearm which provided a bit more weight and a lot more security.
Can't tell you how much I love your videos. I'm only half way interested in buying a turntable, they're way down my list of priorities but watching your videos always makes me want to run out and buy one straight away. Hey Ian thanks for another wonderful review. You sure make buying all this audio equipment easier. I just got a new turntable in the mail, the Fluance RT85. I love it. It is so much better than my Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. It was out of stock for a long time but came back into stock on Fluance's website last week. The black one is in stock now.
Thank you for mentioning it, I was just about to tell Ian if he can to compare one the Fluance to the AT. I think an RT81 or RT82, as the RT85 (congrats BTW) is way over the price range. From all the reviews I've read and watched, I'll steer clear from Pro-Ject...

I got to talk with Mr. Peter Ledermann - The SoundSmith yesterday and am making arrangements to return the cartridge for replacement or rebuild. He will oversee it when he returns to town in early September. It was quite an honor to talk with him! In the meantime, I'm still staying up way too late at night enjoying the MP-150. With the old cartridge I was slowly increasing treble & decreasing bass...trying to make highs and lows sound better. All control are back to being flat once again with outstanding sound thanks to the MP-150. The less effective suspension on the Technics was picking up vibration from my sub-woofer. Never had that issue with the B&O. I just put a set of isolation pads under the sub and it improves things greatly. Not only did it cure the vibration issue at the turntable, it also made the sub less "boomy" and more detailed. I actually had to turn the sub volume up a little to hear detail better since the hardwood floor wasn't augmenting and distorting the sound anymore. Something I should have noticed before! I just assumed the factory isolation feet on the Definitive Technology Pro-Sub 1000 were adequate, but not on hardwood floors, evidently. Wifey and I send warm greetings! I do not actually work inside the hospitals like a doctor, an orderly or anything like that. But I do work with the hospitals from the outside/in. I take people 65 and over to their appointments to all of the major hospitals in Boston. They may be going for a certain medical issue, radiation, dialysis, etc... I work for the city that I live in and I pick them up at their homes or wherever they are living. A lot of them have no family left or relatives. So they depend on us to take them. It is a very rewarding job in many ways. I love to help people so that in itself gives me so much satisfaction. I also have a small landscaping business that I started a few years back. I only have eight houses but it keeps me busy. I don't have as much beach time as I did before. But I still get to swim and surf occasionally. I have not had much time to make videos this summer. But I will make up for the lack of videos come this fall. I hope that my subscribers remember who I am. {smile} OK Ian. Once again, I really appreciated sharing a little bit of my jobs with you. I truly appreciate you asking. Oh and thank you for offering to show me around Japan. Your dealer should be able to sort this out at no charge under the guarantee. It may be due to a small flaw on the drive hub. Part of the reason that the Rega TT's improve model by model is the selection and grading of the components. Many parts are common or with minor changes. The P1, therefore, might find itself with a component that is OK but not of high enough quality to meet the spec for a model further up the range. I like the AT turntable but the only drawback is slight hum in the right channel. The cart on the Pro-Essential 3 does have a bit of a scooped sound vs the AT. I wonder if you swap the carts on the turntables would it "follow" over to the other table or stay more or less the same?

Hi! I've enjoyed your videos and have learned plenty! Thank you! Have you been able to review or know of the Fluance Reference turntables? They are in the $300 - $500 price range and have had very good acceptance. It would be interesting to know how they compare to the Rega or Project Debut or even this Audio Technica turntable. Dear Buddy Ariel :-D yes! The Fluance will only be accessible and reasonable to residents in North America, and a defunct turntable in the rest of the world, else it would cost at least US$150 in shipping (for a heavy, big package) and taxes (a killer 20% in Europe), PLUS slapped on extra "handling fees" in the U.K. Likewise, the U-Turn Orbit :-D I will still aim to run the tests on a Fluance vs a U-Turn and vs the P1 and AT hopefully soon. One thing is for sure, the P1 is my go to super turntable, in the sub-$500 range, and the standard minimum i would recommend for any vinyl record user. My local top, most popular vinyl record shop uses a used old Rega RP1, and had attracted much sales....little wonder :-D !!!! Many record buyers, young or old, tend to get sucked into buying everytime they test-play their records there :-D!!!!! Agree with you Ian on the pains of getting Fluance products to our region. Shipping to MY plus tax is not cheap. The rt82's got a pretty nice feature set for the money though.

I bought the Audio Technica recently to replace a old Pioneer PL335 which was starting to show it's age... mainly to use to record to vinyl to digital on my comp using Audacity with the inbuilt pre amp in the turntable and its quiet as a mouse...so I'm happy

Dear Buddy, the AT530 is already very poor in performance. Even worse than its predecessor. The Goldring Elektra or a Nagaoka MP-100 is even better than the AT540ML. Having a micro line stylus does not make it a better cartridge. The base, the design, its whatever twin magnet, yolk structure, is all hype as these AT MM MM cartridges are poor for the money. The competitors at even lower prices can beat them to a pulp. Avoid the AT VM series 🤗🤗🤗 Stay safe and vigilant. May you and your family be well and happy too😄🏡💚🍀🍀🍀

Yes Brother! The jump in performance to the Mani is colossal. The Mani even rivals and beats the $1,100 Lehmann BlackCubeSE2 in MM performance. The Schiit Mani is a Giant.✌😄👍

Here goes: - i have finally bought the KCC Scientific 1930 60Hz clock!!! just a month ago... - ...so that, i can finally run the lovely blue-coloured U-Turn Orbit I bought TWO years ago at the right speed!!! I, in fact, bought the AudioTechnica AT-LP120, the Pro-Ject Primary, the TEAC TN-300 and the U-Turn Orbit with Black1, two years ago, together, at great cost, to run the turntable shoot-out, but, because the Orbit runs at 110V 60Hz, i had to leave it out. - ..and not just because of the specific voltage of 110V and frequency of 60Hz different from the rest of the world: Europe. Britain, Asia, Australia, etc, the U-Turn Orbit comes at a great cost to anybody outside of North America shipping it via own courier services...expensive shipping fees, handling fees and import taxes all rolled into one. That goes the same for Fluance turntables. - Thus U-Turn and Fluance turntables cannot be applied in the same sentence with us outside of North America, choosing between ubiquitously distributed makes i.e. Rega, Pro-Ject, AudioTechnica, TEAC, etc.... - So finally, the U-Turn will be ready to do battle here, as i have gotten hold of the KCC Scientific 1930 60Hz clock to run the U-Turn, versus.... the latest Fluance turntables...should be the RT83(2M Red) and RT84(2M Blue). Brother, thank you for coming by and chatting up🤗!!!... The LPW40WN is not worth your purchase. Not good for hifi, the ensuing sound quality does not portray the goodness of vinyl analogue. Not possible to upgrade this turntable too as the basic engineering of good bearings at the tonearm, tight tolerances in the spindle-hub bearing interface, motor inherent noise. The P1 is really the one to have, get in, stay in, and enjoy really great vinyl analogue music that gives the raison de etre why we want to get into vinyl, and provides a level of sound which gives us all the reasons why analogue sounds better than digital😄👍👍👍 Warmest Regards Buddy!!!!!! Brother, there isn't any stores in Singapore selling Nagaoka cartridges, and I heard from some audio stores who have approached head Nagaoka office in Japan, that Nagaoka will continue to only sell to Japanese resellers, and people from all over the world will continue to buy from them, e.g. and most, most often used avenue: from trusted highly-rated ebay sellers from Japan, or brick-and-mortar stores in Japan if you visit Japan. We are cool with that, coz inventory and restocking issues are kept to a minimum and probably they realized this is the best way to keep costs down, and keep availability high up, as people now are generally highly attuned to online purchasing. I do stand by the fact that their cartridges' performance are high up, beating many rivals, and their performance e.g. MP-110, MP-150 and MP-200 as i have tested, totally belie their asking price. Amazing. Brother :-D and as for the Technics SL1200, i will point you to the Japanese rakuten sellers, or best of all, www.hifido.co.jp people. Purchase one unit from them, and then equip yourself from a "ARIAKE" UT-030 step-down transformer to 100V to power these Japanese units up. I wish Ian would make a comeback - his comparison videos are still some of the best on TH-cam. On that note, Audio-Technica’s step-up turntable, the AT-LPW50PB Fully, has been favorably reviewed in comparison to both the Rega P1 and P2, and thought to be better than the former, and just as good as the latter. The LPW50 has a better feature set for sure, IMO. Cheers!

The Japanese have fallen way behind most other countries in many a thing. Being totally objective. Even my Japanese wife says that too. My U.K. friend with his Japanese wife opined the same too. Japanese-made doesn't equate to perfect/very good since about 10 years ago. Is there any chance you try Rega cartridges on a Rega turntable and compare them to the similarly priced Nagaokas and Goldrings? The Rega Exact is what I'm particularly interested in.

Great Review, thank you! In NA prices have changed a bit, probably due to Covid and other supply chain issues. Currently the street prices are as follows, which I think makes a better argument for the AT. Also, the Essential III seems to be no longer available. The closest alternative from Pro-Ject is the T1. AT-LPW40WN: $350 (with phono stage) Pro-Ject T1 (closest alternative to Essential III): $450 (with phono stage) Rega P1: $595 The T1 certainly looks interesting looking at the features, but only a review will tell. Still it's $100 more than the AT. The Rega is a ~$250 delta. I am sure it is worth it, but that certainly would be a big consideration for newbies, especially since you will need to add a phono pre-amp of a quality that makes sense for the P1, which would add ~$150. In addition, you would have to assume that folks have the downstream components to actually hear a difference, which is not necessarily the case with entry-level audiophiles. Anyways, enjoyed the review. I got the AT for my 13-year old son and am glad it got the thumbs up.

A nice review, as always and glad you realized the price difference of the P1 Vs the others in that review, but still put the P1 above everything, even today's winner, the AT table so good to know. :-) That all said, I, as I watched the review wondered if the Pro-ject was possibly handicapped by the OM cart it comes with? I have still, but not in use the Super OM-10 that once graced the Kenwood I still use all these years later and found the bass reasonably deep, but lacking mids but not so much the upper mids where it a definite bump there and thus came off strident/bright in my rig. Mind you, I was using at the time the Sherwood (mid 90's BPC era) receiver with its stock phono stage which didn't help matters any so I found myself at the time not playing vinyl much for a few years until I got the SHURE M97xE which evened out the sound from top to bottom despite being narrowish in the stereo separation and the quite rolled off top end and indistinct bass, even when I upgraded the phono stage before going with Grado for the cart. But the difference were very much obvious with this shootout that the Essential was middling, the AT much fatter and far more pleasing to listen to. Good job as always.

@@HiViNywschannel The US dime (about 2.0 g) was a quick fix to make sure that a small added weight would be enough to balance a rather light cartridge (the now-discontinued Goldring Elektra reviewed on this channel). Pro-Ject provided a small metal spacer for their tonearm which provided a bit more weight and a lot more security.

Hey Ian thanks for another wonderful review. You sure make buying all this audio equipment easier. I just got a new turntable in the mail, the Fluance RT85. I love it. It is so much better than my Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. It was out of stock for a long time but came back into stock on Fluance's website last week. The black one is in stock now.
Thank you for mentioning it, I was just about to tell Ian if he can to compare one the Fluance to the AT.
I think an RT81 or RT82, as the RT85 (congrats BTW) is way over the price range.
From all the reviews I've read and watched, I'll steer clear from Pro-Ject...

I got to talk with Mr. Peter Ledermann - The SoundSmith yesterday and am making arrangements to return the cartridge for replacement or rebuild. He will oversee it when he returns to town in early September. It was quite an honor to talk with him!
In the meantime, I'm still staying up way too late at night enjoying the MP-150. With the old cartridge I was slowly increasing treble & decreasing bass...trying to make highs and lows sound better. All control are back to being flat once again with outstanding sound thanks to the MP-150. The less effective suspension on the Technics was picking up vibration from my sub-woofer. Never had that issue with the B&O. I just put a set of isolation pads under the sub and it improves things greatly. Not only did it cure the vibration issue at the turntable, it also made the sub less "boomy" and more detailed. I actually had to turn the sub volume up a little to hear detail better since the hardwood floor wasn't augmenting and distorting the sound anymore. Something I should have noticed before! I just assumed the factory isolation feet on the Definitive Technology Pro-Sub 1000 were adequate, but not on hardwood floors, evidently.

I can clearly hear the better sound on the LPW40WN when you played the Art Blakey. But I really appreciated how you spoke about adding the extra $150 and step up to the Rega P1. I do not actually work inside the hospitals like a doctor, an orderly or anything like that. But I do work with the hospitals from the outside/in. I take people 65 and over to their appointments to all of the major hospitals in Boston. They may be going for a certain medical issue, radiation, dialysis, etc... I work for the city that I live in and I pick them up at their homes or wherever they are living. A lot of them have no family left or relatives. So they depend on us to take them. It is a very rewarding job in many ways. I love to help people so that in itself gives me so much satisfaction.
I also have a small landscaping business that I started a few years back. I only have eight houses but it keeps me busy. I don't have as much beach time as I did before. But I still get to swim and surf occasionally. I have not had much time to make videos this summer. But I will make up for the lack of videos come this fall. I hope that my subscribers remember who I am. {smile}
OK Ian. Once again, I really appreciated sharing a little bit of my jobs with you. I truly appreciate you asking. Oh and thank you for offering to show me around Japan. Your dealer should be able to sort this out at no charge under the guarantee. It may be due to a small flaw on the drive hub. Part of the reason that the Rega TT's improve model by model is the selection and grading of the components. Many parts are common or with minor changes. The P1, therefore, might find itself with a component that is OK but not of high enough quality to meet the spec for a model further up the range. The series of uploads on the Analog Planet site of a visit to the Rega factory shows their philosophy well and they are well worth watching.

The Fluance is OEM made probably by the same Hanpin company that makes the TEAC TN-300, Denon DP300F and Onkyo CP1050, etc :-D Nevertheless i will plan to have a Fluance up against a U-Turn asap. Yup, if it materalizes, both are of course purchased from my own pocket and never ever sponsored. I reject all sponsorships :-) so as to maintain 100% honesty to all of you my friends. You guys are the only people, the only reason i am making these projects and videos for. My only allegiance is to you friends and buddies.

I like the AT turntable but the only drawback is slight hum in the right channel. The cart on the Pro-Essential 3 does have a bit of a scooped sound vs the AT. I wonder if you swap the carts on the turntables would it "follow" over to the other table or stay more or less the same?

Have you been able to review or know of the Fluance Reference turntables? They are in the $300 - $500 price range and have had very good acceptance. It would be interesting to know how they compare to the Rega or Project Debut or even this Audio Technica turntable.

The Fluance will only be accessible and reasonable to residents in North America, and a defunct turntable in the rest of the world, else it would cost at least US$150 in shipping (for a heavy, big package) and taxes (a killer 20% in Europe), PLUS slapped on extra "handling fees" in the U.K.
Likewise, the U-Turn Orbit :-D
I will still aim to run the tests on a Fluance vs a U-Turn and vs the P1 and AT hopefully soon. One thing is for sure, the P1 is my go to super turntable, in the sub-$500 range, and the standard minimum i would recommend for any vinyl record user. My local top, most popular vinyl record shop uses a used old Rega RP1, and had attracted much sales....little wonder :-D !!!! Many record buyers, young or old, tend to get sucked into buying everytime they test-play their records there :-D!!!!!

Agree with you Ian on the pains of getting Fluance products to our region. Shipping to MY plus tax is not cheap. The rt82's got a pretty nice feature set for the money though.

You should review the AT LPW50PB using the Nagaoka MP110 Cartridge.
I bought the Audio Technica recently to replace a old Pioneer PL335 which was starting to show it's age... mainly to use to record to vinyl to digital on my comp using Audacity with the inbuilt pre amp in the turntable and its quiet as a mouse...so I'm happy

Dear Buddy, the AT530 is already very poor in performance. Even worse than its predecessor. The Goldring Elektra or a Nagaoka MP-100 is even better than the AT540ML.
Having a micro line stylus does not make it a better cartridge. The base, the design, its whatever twin magnet, yolk structure, is all hype as these AT MM MM cartridges are poor for the money. The competitors at even lower prices can beat them to a pulp. Avoid the AT VM series 🤗🤗🤗

- i have finally bought the KCC Scientific 1930 60Hz clock!!! just a month ago...
- ...so that, i can finally run the lovely blue-coloured U-Turn Orbit I bought TWO years ago at the right speed!!! I, in fact, bought the AudioTechnica AT-LP120, the Pro-Ject Primary, the TEAC TN-300 and the U-Turn Orbit with Black1, two years ago, together, at great cost, to run the turntable shoot-out, but, because the Orbit runs at 110V 60Hz, i had to leave it out.
- ..and not just because of the specific voltage of 110V and frequency of 60Hz different from the rest of the world: Europe. Britain, Asia, Australia, etc, the U-Turn Orbit comes at a great cost to anybody outside of North America shipping it via own courier services...expensive shipping fees, handling fees and import taxes all rolled into one. That goes the same for Fluance turntables.
- Thus U-Turn and Fluance turntables cannot be applied in the same sentence with us outside of North America, choosing between ubiquitously distributed makes i.e. Rega, Pro-Ject, AudioTechnica, TEAC, etc....
- So finally, the U-Turn will be ready to do battle here, as i have gotten hold of the KCC Scientific 1930 60Hz clock to run the U-Turn, versus.... the latest Fluance turntables...should be the RT83(2M Red) and RT84(2M Blue).

The LPW40WN is not worth your purchase.
Not good for hifi, the ensuing sound quality does not portray the goodness of vinyl analogue. Not possible to upgrade this turntable too as the basic engineering of good bearings at the tonearm, tight tolerances in the spindle-hub bearing interface, motor inherent noise.
The P1 is really the one to have, get in, stay in, and enjoy really great vinyl analogue music that gives the raison de etre why we want to get into vinyl, and provides a level of sound which gives us all the reasons why analogue sounds better than digital😄👍👍👍

Brother, there isn't any stores in Singapore selling Nagaoka cartridges, and I heard from some audio stores who have approached head Nagaoka office in Japan, that Nagaoka will continue to only sell to Japanese resellers, and people from all over the world will continue to buy from them, e.g. and most, most often used avenue: from trusted highly-rated ebay sellers from Japan, or brick-and-mortar stores in Japan if you visit Japan. We are cool with that, coz inventory and restocking issues are kept to a minimum and probably they realized this is the best way to keep costs down, and keep availability high up, as people now are generally highly attuned to online purchasing. I do stand by the fact that their cartridges' performance are high up, beating many rivals, and their performance e.g. MP-110, MP-150 and MP-200 as i have tested, totally belie their asking price. Amazing.
Brother :-D and as for the Technics SL1200, i will point you to the Japanese rakuten sellers, or best of all, www.hifido.co.jp people. Purchase one unit from them, and then equip yourself from a "ARIAKE" UT-030 step-down transformer to 100V to power these Japanese units up.
Many friends have done it and have been enjoying our pristine SL1200Mk3/3D/5 units from hifido :-D !!!

I wish Ian would make a comeback - his comparison videos are still some of the best on TH-cam. On that note, Audio-Technica’s step-up turntable, the AT-LPW50PB Fully, has been favorably reviewed in comparison to both the Rega P1 and P2, and thought to be better than the former, and just as good as the latter. The LPW50 has a better feature set for sure, IMO. Cheers!

The built and precision is incredible, and of course that sme arm. I would say, built-wise, much much better than the SL1200GAE/G. Definitely. The Japanese have fallen way behind most other countries in many a thing. Being totally objective. Even my Japanese wife says that too. My U.K. friend with his Japanese wife opined the same too. Japanese-made doesn't equate to perfect/very good since about 10 years ago. They have declined sadly, but inevitably with their mindset still trapped eons ago.
:-D but we look forward of course... there will be good things, always, more or less.

Great Review, thank you! In NA prices have changed a bit, probably due to Covid and other supply chain issues. Currently the street prices are as follows, which I think makes a better argument for the AT. Also, the Essential III seems to be no longer available. The closest alternative from Pro-Ject is the T1.
AT-LPW40WN: $350 (with phono stage)
Pro-Ject T1 (closest alternative to Essential III): $450 (with phono stage)
Rega P1: $595
The T1 certainly looks interesting looking at the features, but only a review will tell. Still it's $100 more than the AT. The Rega is a ~$250 delta. I am sure it is worth it, but that certainly would be a big consideration for newbies, especially since you will need to add a phono pre-amp of a quality that makes sense for the P1, which would add ~$150. In addition, you would have to assume that folks have the downstream components to actually hear a difference, which is not necessarily the case with entry-level audiophiles.
Anyways, enjoyed the review. I got the AT for my 13-year old son and am glad it got the thumbs up.

A nice review, as always and glad you realized the price difference of the P1 Vs the others in that review, but still put the P1 above everything, even today's winner, the AT table so good to know. :-)
That all said, I, as I watched the review wondered if the Pro-ject was possibly handicapped by the OM cart it comes with? I have still, but not in use the Super OM-10 that once graced the Kenwood I still use all these years later and found the bass reasonably deep, but lacking mids but not so much the upper mids where it a definite bump there and thus came off strident/bright in my rig. Mind you, I was using at the time the Sherwood (mid 90's BPC era) receiver with its stock phono stage which didn't help matters any so I found myself at the time not playing vinyl much for a few years until I got the SHURE M97xE which evened out the sound from top to bottom despite being narrowish in the stereo separation and the quite rolled off top end and indistinct bass, even when I upgraded the phono stage before going with Grado for the cart.
But the difference were very much obvious with this shootout that the Essential was middling, the AT much fatter and far more pleasing to listen to.

Would your friendly hifi guys not allow home audition of the three with the understanding that you bought one of them, the winner of the shootout. You could then offer the winner for sale thereby costing you nothing but still providing your indispensable service to the VC. Worth thinking about?

Brother! I don't own any record stores! What remains a hobby, remains a hobby, without any vested interest in earning money from it. I can do much better with my honest best when it remains a hobby, 100%, purely!!!✌😄👌
