    Drinking beers at 9 AM with a 78 year old farmer IS the reason guys! Understand you want to see more, but that old gentleman will stick with you for years if you take the time with him. As an old guy myself, the most valuable lesson is SLOW DOWN, listen to understand, not reply and respect his generosity.

    Your journey creates many memories, from the smallest moments to the big ones. Breaking down and making roadside repairs is what I sometimes remember from my small road trips with my girl. Mexico is welcoming you with its best beautiful places that most travelers will never get to see due to the fear they see in the media. But yet keeping those small towns as hidden gems with their true natives and people that welcome you and not making them so touristy. Keep on rocking it guys.

    Sorry to hear about your troubles good on you both for pushing through. ( I know this may seem counter intuitive but) it's really cool seeing you deal with these issues on the road, one of the biggest hiccups for alot of us is believing our rigs need to be perfect or expecting they are, and not going for the journey till its perfect when the reality is it never will be. You will have to work on your rig going for a journey this long, It is inevitable even if it's a brand new rig. This is why it is so important to bring tools, have the knowledge and most importantly build your rig in a repairable manner with parts your can find.

    I have really been enjoying your journey through Mexico. I am based in Ajijic, Jalisco and love overland travel, if you are ever in the area or need any advice from a local. Dont miss the sotano de las golondrinas or sotano de las guaguas at sun set or sun rise while you are in the huasteca region. Also Sierra Gorda in Queretaro is really worth visiting.

      Hello Edgar Gomez, based in Ajijic. We are in Ajijic too and are getting an overlander ready for travel through Mexico for the purpose of creating a TransMexico "Trail" that will be primarily dirt roads through Mexico from the US to Guatemala and back in a loop. Our FJ Cruiser will be the overlander vehicle providing support to our motorcycles. Do you overland here?

    I’ve fought this same issue. Efi really needs the in tank pump. I did use a marine pump with better results from Napa auto, worked for a wile. Pump just gets to hot running high pressures.
    Cheers!
    Love seeing you guys out there

  • @michaelharris1455
    @michaelharris1455 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, stopped the video while you were under the truck, so if you've already figured it out, forgive me.
    You cannot PULL fuel through hose, or it will collapse the hose, and starve the engine for fuel.
    This will show it's self most, while climbing hills, because the engine requires more fuel with the increased load. (It will act exactly like it's vapor locking)
    You are correct in that those pumps prefer to push, instead of pull, and you are adding to the problem using hose, instead of metal line.
    Move the pump as close to the tank as you can, and try to use some tubing between the pump and tank.
    You will inevitably need to use SOME hose there, for connections, but minimize as much as possible.
    Also, yes, put some distance between the fuel line, and the exhaust, or at least consider a heatshield of some sort.
    For what it's worth, I've been a mechanic for most of the last 40 years.
    Best of luck on your adventure, I look forward to following along.

    That pump should be lower than the tank. If fuel returns back to the tank and the pump has to draw an empty line every time vertically on start up then the pump life will definitely be shorten. If you pick up in the tank is already screened filter then I would have gotten rid of the pre filter and remounted that pump in place of the pre filter away from exhaust. You could also put some heat wrap around that exhaust pipe.

    • @jasonbrown-st6fn
      @jasonbrown-st6fn ปีที่แล้ว

      That style of pump Is only meant to push fuel and it needs to to inches away from the gas tank. All newer vehicles have the fuel pump in the tanks so the fuel keeps the pump cool. You will have problems with an external pump always. And if you opened the gas cap and the problem went away I would look to see if your vent for the tank is plugged. As you are burning fuel it needs to let in air because you are creating a vacuum in the tank

    • @dandorris8531
      @dandorris8531 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasonbrown-st6fn agreed on the vent, I drive an LS swapped 69 Chevy c10 for last 10 years built solely by me. I run an external in line Walbro 255 pump pushing 58 to 62 psi. Pump is below the tank. The inlet is vertical at the tanks because I’m using the stock tank behind the seat. It has no drain back into the tank as the lines is always full of fuel. So if properly done pushing fuel it doesn’t matter and keeping it away from heat. Still same pump and I also rip it at the raceway.

    I know it’s a older post , but I had the exact same issues with my inline fuel pump doing the same thing on my LS3 swapped BJ73 . It was being cooked by the exhaust where it bent just like yours . I went through 3 pumps thinking it was the filters , Vapor lock etc . I added header wrap after the last one went out . Once I did that zero issues for 10k miles .
    It was always a intermittent and slow process before they failed
    outright ..MOAB at 104f is when it all began for the 2nd to last pump and I was able to bypass the relay with a toggle and drive it home none stop to El Paso from Telluride Col .. then the 3rd one went after I was stuck out in the desert on incline where I thought it was going to roll down a slope .. so I left the engine running for 5 hours while we did a recovery until 4:30 am . Once I shut the rig off in the drive through it was dead for good . Lol

    If you can Install a fuel pump inches away from the fuel tank those pumps are meant to push not pull the heat's gonna kill it you'd be better off putting the pump inside the gas tank like all new vehicles. if you can re route the fuel line on the outside of the frame away from the exhaust. If the problem goes away when you open up your gas cap check your vent on your fuel tank it might be plugged. you're creating a vacuum when you are using fuel and when you release the gas cap that release the vacume pressure. I would buy extra fuel pumps while you are in Mexico. Best of luck

    maybe wrapping the exhaust and fuel pump with aluminum foil would prevent the radiant heat from boiling the gas?

    Too much rubber fuel line!!!! Rubber fuel line does not dissipate heat well at all.. Rule of thumb is to only use short pieces of rubber hose to make connections.. All the rest should be steel line.. also run opposite side of exhaust system..

    Some type of heat shield between exhaust and fuel pump around pump?

    Try a transmission cooler on the fuel line into the fuel pump . Add computer fans or mount where it will get some air flow .

    I ran into similar issues before. My pump was higher than the fuel level and would lose the syphon on the pickup tube. I would top the tank off with fuel and presto. It would run. Burn off 1/2 a tank and it would die constantly. I lowered the pump as far down as possible and never had the issue again. Maybe your issue too?
    Edit* Good call on the vapor lock. Hopefully it's fixed. At least I contributed a comment for the algorithm.

    This is my parents Home lands la Huasteca. I have some of the best memories visiting the many rivers/waterfalls with family. The water a welcoming refreshing time during the summer heat. The windy roads up the mountains full of vegetation. Looking fwd to going back soon. Oh, and def no signal! Its kind of refreshing to disconnect from the modern tech in our everyday lives.
