    Port is a fortified ("by the addition of a neutral grape spirit known as aguardente to stop the fermentation") wine "produced from grapes grown and processed in the demarcated Douro region" of Portugal. "It is typically a sweet red wine, often served with dessert, although it also comes in dry, semi-dry, and white varieties." White port is often served as an aperitif, whereas ruby or tawny port is more of an after-dinner drink. I like the fact that - when the EU decreed that only fortified wine from Portugal could be labelled "Port" - the Quady Winery in California changed the name of their similar product to "Starboard"...

    Kurt & Trenton, here's a blind tasting idea for next month: March 17 (Sunday) is St. Patrick's Day, so how about an All-Irish Whiskey blind on the Friday before. Some of the popular ones are Tullamore DEW, Redbreast, The Sexton (a recent favorite that's Spanish Sherry finished and around $35), Bushmills, Teeling, Jameson, West Cork, Kilbeggan, and Slane to name a few potential candidates.
    Thanks for all the great videos that guide us toward the good stuff!👍

    • @TylerSmith-sq9oz
      @TylerSmith-sq9oz 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I second this great idea! I’d personally love to see a blind of any of the following to be honest: Busker Single Pot Still, Teeling Small Batch, Bushmills Black Bush, Jameson Black Barrel, Slane, Sexton, or even Powers Three Swallow. Key word: affordable. I find myself falling back into Irish due to the high bourbon and scotch prices. Trenton, you can extend your experience beyond Redbreast into even more Irish whiskies!

    In 2013, a state law was enacted that requires Tennessee Whiskey to meet the following:
    - Manufactured in TN
    - Filtered through maple charcoal prior to aging (Lincoln County Process)
    - Distilled from at least 51% corn
    - Distilled to no more than 160 proof (80% ABV)
    - Aged in new charred oak barrels
    - Placed in barrel at no more than 125 proof (62.5% ABV)
    - Bottled at no less than 80 proof (40% ABV)

    • @mohawkgorilla6216
      @mohawkgorilla6216 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So this is not a federal law but a Tennessee law? So I can produce a whiskey in any other State and call it Tennessee whiskey and the State of Tennessee can’t enforce its laws in another state right?

    • @jacksmith2315
      @jacksmith2315 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mohawkgorilla6216no, you can not manufacture a whiskey outside of Tennessee and call it Tennessee whiskey. That is false advertisement. Consumers as well as im sure the state of Tennessee can sue you. Consumers definitely can because you are selling a labeled product that is not the actual product you are saying it is

    The Brits love port & import huge amounts from Portugal just like they do with sherry from Spain & also Madeira from the Portugese Island of Madeira out there in the Atlantic. I really enjoy all those fortified wines with port being my favourite & there are many styles such a ruby, tawny, vintage & white although I have only ever seen `white port` when I`ve been over there in your fair land. If a port ain`t red I ain`t buying!

    • @jacksmith2315
      @jacksmith2315 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ive seen a few whiskeys finished in tawny port, a couple in ruby port. I was never a wine fan so i stayed away from them. I have a few madeira finished whiskeys that are really good. My brother has the blackened wes henderson thats a white port finish thats really good. If i was to try them on their own, not in a finished product, id probably go for madeira, regular port or white port. Not that i know what to really excpect, but just based on what ive had as a finished cask. I know its not even close to the same, but i really like calvados cask finished whiskeys, so id probably try that as well.

    Ruby ports pass more sugar and fruit to a product. The white port passes fruit hints almost like stone fruit without adding sweetness. Port is fortified wine. It is wine which it's fermentation is ended by adding brandy or other grape spirits.

    The prideful goat is from the real bourbon talk. He made it with the intent to be a reasonably priced whiskey. Its supposed to be $65-75, but, in states that its not intended to be distributed to, but the distributor has access to it, they jack up the price. So the store isnt jacking up the price to make a killing off it, the distributor is. I seen it here in MA at total wine where it is not intended to be sold, and they sell it for $110. I actually had a brief convo with randy about this. I actually just seen it at another local store here in MA for $100, so obviously their distributor got access to it now too and also jacked the price. Mr brother got it when we first seen it at TW. Its good, but its not $100-110 good, but as stated, it wasnt meant to be sold at those prices.

    One note on that prideful goat 8yr price: the mgp rye barrels in that blend were aged 5 years in indiana and then an additional 3 years in texas. This explains to me why they marked it up 10 over what you expected since its proabably the case that those barrels had more evaporation than a normal mgp rye release.

    Got a decent discount on the Bib & Tucker 10-year, so I decided to give it a try--not nearly so much minerality on it like I do from Dickel products, I did find it very two-dimensional: oak & vanilla on the palette, practically no finish. For a $90 MSRP bottle, I was disappointed.
    I'm a fan of Chattanooga Whiskey, and wish it was distributed close to me--I hate buying online and dealing with shipping & delivery.

    Port wine is a wine made from Portugal. They'll take the grapes and make wine then distill it into a brandy and age it in barrels. Then they will let grapes over ripen on the vine so that they are sweet. They'll make a sweet wine with those grapes and add (fortify) the sweet wine with some brandy, which is known as Port.

    What are the requirements to be called a Tennessee whiskey?
    There are specific requirements a spirit must meet to be labeled as Tennessee whiskey. These are defined by both federal and state law, ensuring its distinct identity. Here's a breakdown:
    Federal Requirements:
    Bourbon Standards: Since 2004, Tennessee whiskey has legally been classified as a "straight Bourbon whiskey." This means it shares all the basic regulations for bourbon, including:
    Distilled from a grain mash with at least 51% corn.
    Aged in new, charred oak barrels.
    Bottled at no less than 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume).
    No added coloring or flavoring.
    State of Tennessee Requirements:
    Beyond the federal bourbon standards, Tennessee law imposes additional regulations that differentiate it:
    Lincoln County Process: This mandatory step involves filtering the new-make spirit through a layer of sugar maple charcoal before entering the aging barrels. This filtration is believed to contribute to the smoother taste associated with Tennessee whiskey.
    Made in Tennessee: As the name suggests, the spirit must be distilled and aged entirely within the state of Tennessee.
    Additional Specifications:
    Proof Limit: While the minimum bottling proof is 80, both distillation and barreling proof are also regulated. The spirit cannot be distilled above 160 proof (80% ABV) and must enter the barrel at no higher than 125 proof (62.5% ABV).
    Exception:
    One interesting exception exists: Prichard's Distillery, established before the Lincoln County Process became mandatory, is grandfathered in and allowed to produce Tennessee whiskey without charcoal filtration.
    So, to call itself "Tennessee whiskey," a spirit must fulfill all the federal bourbon standards, undergo the Lincoln County Process, and be produced entirely within the state of Tennessee. These strict regulations ensure the unique identity and quality associated with this type of whiskey.

    I really enjoyed the boondocks port finished. Just a really enjoyable port finished bourbon that didn’t break the bank.

    If you haven't had Left Hand Brewing Company's "White Russian" white stout, give it a try, the white port thing made me think of that.

    Maybe its good for another blind test on fresh crack vs open bottle. I'm well into the open the bottle early class vs fresh crack.

    Any chance for 13Th Century Rye Reserve gentlemen? I sent bottle back in December and quality will crush 95% + of rye whiskies you have tasted. We're bottling the 1st release of the bourbon reserve this week. Maybe dedicated episode to review both?

    I’m curious why you guys are hiding the glasses when before you would have them sitting right behind the bottles you’re drinking? We want to see the the glasses and that beautiful golden brown liquid. Also it’s confirmation for the viewer that you’re drinking the sample of corresponding bottle y’all are discussing at the time

    So you're definitely going with Buffalo Trace and Hard Truth 90, then you need a couple or three more? Russell's 10-Year is an obvious choice. I'd throw Redwood Empire Pipe Dream in there for sure (or Lost Monarch, if you're not opposed to throwing a boureye in there). Cheers!
