    4. No evasion moves before level 100*
    Rule details:

    -- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

    Amnesia early on, starting with Water Gun for an easy Brock, gen 1 Blizzard, and even fairly early EQ
    Erika might be a road block, but that's it. Blizzard, Surf, Earthquake and Amnesia sounds like an unstoppable moveset, even with Wooper's awful stats

    Always loved the Wooper line. Excellent, complementary typing. Makes a great partner for Cyndaquil/Chikorita. STAB Earthquake, learned naturally through level up at a reasonable level of 31 or 35 if evolved. Only shared by the Geodude line until you reach the Kanto region. I agree with the others that Surf is a very useful option that you could try learning over Ice Punch / Return. Would help speed up the Rocket section and can be forgotten by the Move Deleter before you face Clair's dragons.

    The interesting thing about the most recent generation, is that while the starter dynamic STARTS with them picking up your weakness, when they evolve their secondary typing is actually reversed. That way they teach you while you have an advantage, but by the end you have to work around a much more complex state. Dual status makes you both strong and weak against each other.
    For instance, if you pick up Sprigatito, a Grass type, your rival will pick up Quaxly, a Water type. You learn about types while you have the advantage. Later, when they evolve, the dynamic switches. You grass kitty evolves to Meowscarada, it picks up a Dark typing. When your rival's water duck evolves to Quaquaval, it picks up Fighting. All of a sudden your grass kitty is sweating, because that Fighting type really messes up Dark types.
    With Skeledirge being a Fire type that picks up a Ghost type, the reverse triangle is complete.
    Fire > Grass > Water
    Ghost < Dark < Fighting

      I love this interaction! Really cool starter typings!

    • @wesleyquere4979
      @wesleyquere4979 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except that the secondary typings are forming a line, and not a circle. Fire > grass > water > fire is much better than poor Skeledirge having to be scared of both starters because of the dark typing of Meowscarada and the water typing of Quaquaval.

    • @NaturesFlame
      @NaturesFlame ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wesleyquere4979 Just like the Meowscarada has to worry about the fire moves and the fighting moves. Skeledirge isn't special in this interaction. I'm confused as to what you're even trying to say. Are you trying to say that the Water Duck is the winner because he doesn't have to worry about a weakness, only an immunity for his strongest STAB?
      Like sure, I get the argument that the duck wins slightly in that type matchup, but I mean, Skeledirge gets Torch Song. Its the main starter pick for speedruns for a reason, its the strongest by far in a vacuum.

    • @wesleyquere4979
      @wesleyquere4979 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was just an example. My issue with the new system isnt that it's bad and blabla it sucks, it's clever and interesting, but for me the simplicity of knowing you can't really rely on your first pokémon to beat the rival, therefore searching for a type that would counter it, was really charming.
      There's also what i see as fixing what isn't broken, as you said yourself they're giving you an easy time early on and a hard time later ,but the only thing that does is help you learn types after quite a few hours of gameplay, when you either know them well or have a phone in your pocket.
      The old system made it feel like the game challenged you head-on, now it's putting duct tape where it's not needed. Skeledirge is by far the strongest, and a good part of that is Torch Song, sure, but without the move, it'd be average even for speedruns. Maybe a bit better since he has a good typing i guess?
      But in SP now, since starters here are all able to do SE damage on each others with strong moves, the fastest will most likely one shot the others, and suddenly the weed cat is broken since it can one shot the other two, and the duck can avoid the lizard's one-shot from it's STAB. Thank god online play is so much more complex!
      TL;DR cool idea, correct execution, don't understand why they did this now when most kids have played at least one game before and most of the playerbase is at the very least over 20.(Sorry for the textbook. :c)@@NaturesFlame

    • @NaturesFlame
      @NaturesFlame 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wesleyquere4979 Sorry for the late reply, youtube decided to just stop notifying me of replies, but I really wanted to touch on your last point.
      >most kids have played at least one game before
      This is NOT how they design the games, and they NEVER have. They treat every single game as if it is your first Pokemon. Because for a lot of people, it always is. They aren't appealing to 20 year olds that battle in VGC and on Smogon. We're gonna buy the game or not. Advertising or appealing to us is functionally and financially pointless. They are, every 3 years, targeting a NEW batch of kids. Thats how you become the biggest franchise in the world (yes, biggest. Even The Mouse can't touch Pokemon).
      The old system was made in the era of arcades, of "nintendo hard". Kids were expected to "tough it out" with a game a lot more than they are now. This makes sense, because instead of having a dozen games to choose from at my local blockbuster, I now have hundreds of thousands of games on my steam. Games become easier for kids because if they're hard they won't "try harder", they'll go play Fortnite or something.

    Great video as always! And since you asked, I feel the pokemon that would suffer the most against Bugsy's Metapod and Kakuna would be Wobbuffet, since it has to either counter their weak physical moves while possibly waiting through a bunch of harden and string shot, or use struggle which requires depleting a lot of PP first. Probably still not hard, but as annoying as it can get.

    • @ShadyScienceFeline
      @ShadyScienceFeline ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JRose11 has done that one. Because of their weak moves, he would always run out of PP on Counter, but Struggle would never take out the Scyther before Fury Cutter (super effective) would take out Wobbuffet. He had to use Counter for Metapod and Scyther, and then have all his other moves already out of PP so that once he ran out of Counter PP he could immediately use Struggle to take out Kakuna.

    (edit: Fixed a small thing) Morty sending out his last Haunter has nothing to do with you having Earthquake. He would do that even if your only move was Water Gun.
    Basically, the AI goes through its party members and checks:
    1. Do I have 0 HP? If so, discourage using me and go to the next party member.
    2. Do I have a supereffective move type? If so, heavily prioritize me.
    3. Am I weak to either of your primary or secondary types? If so, deprioritize me.
    One note: #2 also only considers move typing, not if it is a damaging move. So if he had a Pokémon with Leech Seed, he'd prioritize it.
    If none of his Pokémon are deprioritized, he'll send out the first one with the highest priority. However, if all of of his Pokémon are deprioritized, he will send out a random Pokémon. In this case, he has no "supereffective" moves and all of his Pokémon have the same weak typing, meaning all of them are negative in priority, so that was the decision he took.

    Wooper is such an adorable pokemon, especially with how it is presented in the thumbnail.😊
    Wooper has a great coverage and some great typing ,most of it's problems are the low spacial defense and special attack,and that awful speed stat.🫣 And the 4 times weakness to grass types ,makes it a nightmare for Wooper to deal with them. Luckily grass types has a lot of weakness to bug,ice ,flying and poison. One way to counter them is to use hp bug which can complement it's attack stat or using sludge bomb after beating team rocket at Mahogany . I'm not sure if you could access that part before beating the 6th gym , but if you could that could make sludge bomb a really good option . Because after all most of the mid to late game is filled with pokemon with low defenses and Wooper is more of a physical attacker then a special one . Ice punch is really good when it comes to freeze luck , which can save some extra grinding, so I see why you choose to stick with it throughout both runs. 🤔
    But at least I'm really glad that Wooper is not in the Bruno tier .
    And as for the Gengar playthrough,be careful of dark types and psychic types.😊

    Wooper's a Pokémon I've adored from first glance, but have only had the occasional experience with. My main Gen 2 playthroughs have both have Totodille as my starter (being my favourite starter pick) so I've usually had Water type covered. Still, love this merry fellow and hope he does well here.
    0:48 - Rather funny that the arm-less Pokémon was designed to be a physical attacker. I feel Wooper's greater typing and naturally learned stab Earthquake will give it an easier time for the most part... until you come across a grass trainer like Erika. The rival with a Bayleaf would be a huge obstacle.
    2:49 - I like how Wooper can learn Sludge Bomb; fits well with the marshy Pokémon. Odd that it doesn't learn Body Slam naturally, feels like it would be a perfect fit.
    5:28 - No PSNCureBerry before Bugsy's gym? Feels like just slapping that or an Oran berry at least would be the solution to the Kakuna Poison Sting situation.
    6:52 - I was just thinking that an Amnesia set-up might be just what you need against the Rival's Bayleef. You'd risk a Paralysis chance against the Ghastly but I think preparing as much as possible before a 4x Razor Leaf would be the better call.
    9:12 - It's rather funny that the rival's best set is in choosing Chikorita. He has a much better move-set going for the Pokémon than when he steals the other two starters.
    14:18 - Dig was how I easily countered Whitney in the past, an I guess I've been lucky, because I've never once struggled her. My brother on the other-hand had a tough time, mainly due to her fast flinching Stomps.
    16:09 - So just relying on a little bit of luck here. Do you reckon Muddy here has the quick claw attached to his tail or is equipped onto his magically generated ice fists?
    20:47 - To be fair, does anyone struggle against Pryce? Pretty sure he's the Lt Surge of Johto, so very specific conditions have to be met to have a hard time against him.
    23:31 - There are? Huh, never knew that. Always fascinating the new things I learn from your videos.
    26:32 - Ah, so this is why you decided to talk about Ariana. At least it's a technically significant trainer with a Grass type that is being brought up here; I was half expecting a bunch of random trainers who just so happen to have Grass types to get mentioned as obstacles for Wooper in this run.
    32:17 - Unfortunately, what I said about a random trainer with a bunch of Grass types taking Wooper down came to be. I also comment as I watch, many pauses along the way, so I didn't this was about to happen. Spinning trainer Megan (checked her Heart Gold/Soul Silver name) and her army of Saurs; that could be another fun trainer artwork.
    39:49 - Rather hilarious that your strategy is to try and wake up as quick as possible so you can go back to sleep.
    44:15 - This seemed the optimal play here. It's not like the Kanto Gym Leaders are wildly different in levels, so until it gets to the likes of Blue (and potentially Erika), levelling won't be as much of a priority. The other Kanto gym leaders are there as levelling for you.
    45:47 - Never mind, Erika's silly usage of Solar Beam makes what could have been an easy victory for her a loss instead. That's quite a surprise.
    52:42 - That second rival fight was your most major roadblock so hopefully a one loss victory over them will speed up the rest of the playthrough quite a bit. Still not going to be a great time, but the number of resets should be a lot lower.
    57:07 - A lot better than that first run though, which is always great to see.

      I tend to only use new Gen Pokémon, Black and White 2 being the exception, so outside of the remakes I don't tend to revisit the previously introduced Pokémon. Of course, if I didn't have a full team and stumbled on a shiny like that, I'd likely have it as a team member. Cool story!@@Kris2005isMine

    I love Wooper but I absolutely do not need you to do another video with it, you've done a great job with this one.
    Also, I know you said to not worry about your mental health, especially for the volume of work for December, but commenting helps with the algorithm, so.. Don't overexert yourself (or your editor and crew)!
    Also also, Quagsire and Magcargo might make for a decent pair for a future VS video? Considering the fact that they're both dual Types in some situations where it might arguably be better to be mono-typed and the comparisons drawn between their pre-evos in this video...

  • @SmashMath151
    @SmashMath151 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In the first playthrough, you used Return on both of Will's Xatu and leveled until it was a range, though Ice Punch almost certainly would've done more damage since the Xatu have almost equal Def and Sp Def. I was a little surprised you didn't talk about this in the 2nd playthrough since it might've been able to save a few levels of grinding and/or hold off on Rest. Either way, not as bad of a time as I was expecting with 15 base Speed and a 4x weakness!

    • @ScottsThoughtsPokemon
      @ScottsThoughtsPokemon  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct. Ran the damage ranges @lv65 with my exact Wooper from playthrough 1 (the route was recorded in real time with RBY XP Router).
      Ice Punch: 103.64 - 121.82%
      Return: 92.73 - 110.00%
      Ice Punch always OHKOs
      Return is a 64% chance to OHKO
      Good catch!

  • @tehy123
    @tehy123 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think a good way to think about comparing move damage is with rough percentage calculations. So for example, with Ice Punch vs Return against Golbat, a super effective Ice Punch is about 50% stronger, meaning that Wooper's special attack is basically inflated by ~50% for the purposes of this calculation. That brings it up from 64 to 96, which is greater than 88. So Ice Punch is better in that case. This also helps explain why Surf is way better than Headbutt, as it's almost twice as strong.

    People really overestimate the difference 20 or so atk can make. Being a pure physical attacker is important when EVs exist and can be optimized or you have an atk boosting move, but typically type match-ups are more important. I feel like Return > Ice Punch against a flying type only really applies to extreme cases like Hitmonlee, or when facing opponents with a massive defense difference like chansey or onix.
    P.S.: I know Scott knows better by now and this isn't a critcism anyway, just the fact he wanted to show the calc in the video tells me people had likely been suggesting similar things.

    Regarding which starter to replace in newer games: While in Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, Sword/Shield, and Scarlet/Violet, your rival picks the starter weak to yours, certain trainers will also have an advantageous type against yours (not always the third starter). Most notably, in all these games except Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, the person who gave you and your rival your starters has to be battled late in the game, and they will use the third starter, i.e. the one strong against yours.

    Rest-amnesia vs lance actually negates the need for ice punch for the Dragonites (still good vs Aerodactyl) since a return us likely a two shot and hyper beam is being used.
    You could also heal vs the second Dragonite and due to low PP on hyper beam and the recharge turn, you'd make it to the next Dragonite with much more HP.

    I'm finished with my gen 2 romhack! I buffed the difficulty of the Elite Four, but they ended up impossible with the amount of money they gave you, and I didn't want to make the trainer feel like they should sit there and farm them for money after they win, so I had a full heal between each one, and I thought that was fun.
    Then I buffed every gym leader after the Elite Four to be lv45 at least, and a diverse team of 6.
    Surge was still a joke, a clean sweep with my earth type. Sabrina was really hard too, but I think that's just because I gave her a Starmie, and every trainer I gave a Starmie was impossible.
    The biggest thing though was, a leader was hard if my counter to their type didn't hit their final evolution. And then was easy if I did.
    Having a properly evolved pokemon really makes a huge difference.
    I still think the game is most fun with a middle tier pokemon. Low tier is so weak that the game slows to a crawl, but high tier plows through enemies so quickly they don't have a chance to counter. Even bosses melt to them.
    ...say have you done any videos on Starmie? I'm terrified of how powerful they are. I wonder how cleanly they'll beat a game.

      I think that link should get you a rom that has everything cleaned up, but the final boss is overtuned.
      Thank you for your interest! It was a lot of hard work, though the general idea is having fun coming up with monster designs and bringing them to life while using my OC.
      Looking forward to you seeing you destroy everything with an insane move pool and optimized stats!
