19:20 "it cant span multiple levels" yes they can!!! to make a multi-level library (or other zone), you just need to make a second zone then link it to the first, then they will share pretty much everything and scholars will travel between them and store books in both zones. you can also do this with combinations of zones, such as linking a tavern to your library, then your scholars will be given drinks by the tavernkeeper.
@@harley8047 i've done it before, and though it does look really nice and it provides a lot of social space, it's also extreme overkill. i have built colonies with the intention of collecting as many books as possible, and they often get over 200 books, and even those only take up about a dozen bookshelves at most, so you end up with very sparse bookshelves and most of the library being empty.
I like building my vampires a room full of work places with holes i can drop them stuff from nothing quite like watching them slowly become legenary in all the crafting skills

This is a cool premise, I'd still like to a see a dwarven flood video. You are not allowed to send out any raiding parties, armies, or anything aggressive like that until say Year 15. At the start of year 15 you only have 1 year to conquer the entire world. I don't know much about Dwarf Fortress, so maybe you'd want to change those numbers around a little bit if that is impossible.
that is very impossible since traveling the world map takes in-game years in 15 years you wouldn't get enough migrants to fill enough armies to conquer every hold in that period the easiest way to conquer other forts is by sending a diplomat with high social skills as the leader of a army, and requesting surrender that also allows you to conquer neutral and allied towns without triggering a war thing is that many goblin civilizations are ruled by immortal demons, and the only way to kill them is to find the slab with their name in adventure mode and then slay them
Unfortunately, not very realistic. The build up would be pretty straight forward, with me amassing wealth and training for 60+ hours for a couple hours of sending troops out. It'd be largely like the original conquest video without too much changing. Plus, I don't know of any way to train tactics without raiding, and no amount of soldiers can clear places with bad tactics skills, so it wouldn't be that much crazier.
It can be really hard to tell where something is going wrong sometimes. I remember my first fortress. It was doing well until a sudden depression spike caused a doom spiral, someone killed someone then most everyone died. I couldn't keep up and the miasma actually cleared on its own before things started improving. Then a were-lemur bit a farmer who decided to attack it on her own and that caused an entirely different doom spiral.
protip for mass graves: you can channel out 2 tiles, clear the ramp on one to place a coffin, and flag the whole enclosed 2x1 space as a tomb without building doors. i like to regular mine out a 64x64 area, flag rows of two as channels, then erase parts of the columns in a pattern that makes for a grid of 2x1 channels. instead of manually making each 2x1 channel
nothing like a game like DF to help you cope with a phd thesis. it was the worst time of my life and I'm so glad it's finished. I hope you take a well deserved break! :D
This was amazing. The first video was great too, but being able to revert the downward spiral on this hopeless a situation is something we rarely get to see. Also, congratulations on the PhD brother
Im not sure if you need to look at your collection and hauling settings to stop dwarfs going into the cavern layers without having to manually forbid items.
Honestly congrates on becoming a Doctor not something one just does nore do many get the chance too and more even would if they had the chance. And low key using it to set up a joke to transition to TH-camr stuff I did laught at and did enjoy all of that bit's inclution glad that you added it.
@@JustDontDie No, unfortunately. I'm not very knowledgeable about that kind of thing. I just encountered the same problem and looked up what was causing it. Someone who knows more about the subject might be able to be more of a help though
love your content. you have a great knack and voice for narration. Also your stories and and execution of the ideas are great even if they do not come to completion and success. XD
ant people come in 4 different castes Drones, Workers, Soldiers and Queens. each of a different size. drones being the smallest but i think the only ones that can fly and warriors and queens being bigger than workers. i think the size difference is why some did not activate pressure plates
35:09 it could be caused by age, but I'm guessing it's from body appearance and/or caste variation. Height, Broadness, and Length all change a creature's body size by a percentage value and therefore their mass. On top of that, each of the different castes of Antmen have different body sizes. Drones and Workers are the lightest, Soldiers are heavier, and Queens can be the heaviest. A skinny and/or short antman drone or worker may be under your minimum weight threshold.
I'm not sure. I know they breed extremely quickly, but there were always more even when I did laps of the caverns, so I think that there's a near-infinite source of them somewhere off screen.

You are more than entitled to humble brag. Congratulations on your doctoral thesis!
@JustDontDie What is the field of your doctorate?
Going for a PHD puts the channel name 'Just Don't Die' into a whole new perspective.
'dr. just don't die' sound pretty badass

Oh man that's awesome. I knew you could do that with taverns but didn't know you could with Libraries! Thanks for posting this friend!
I hope he sees this.
I'd love for someone playing DF to build this grand, multilevel library.

What a fun story! A war-time fortress being reclaimed and turned into a bastion of culture is quite a tale, worthy of dwarven song!
4:00 They ARE actually still traveling, if you use DFHack and the command fix/return-units they will come back
They are just stuck somewhere
Welp. They're gone now...

I really enjoy your content, it’s very engaging and fun to listen to while I work :p
Congratulations on your phd! But it's kind of ironic that the literal doctor forgets dwarfs can go diagonaly :D
It just doesn't look like they should be able to... Haha, thanks!
You get my like and sub for the "Just what the doctor ordered" pun. Got a solid chuckle out of me. Thank you.
Damn, I forget about this channel for what feels like one week, next thing I know, this man becomes a doctor of not dying!
Good on ya!
Greatly enjoyed this! And congrats on the thesis!
Thank you for your Dwarf Fortress content, I really like it.
Amazing Video! I love seeing you revisiting your olds forts, I would love to see a continuation of others! Great Stuff!
Libraries can actually span multiple levels. One meeting zone per level, each one added to the same libraries.
love this sort of aftermath video, seeing the effects of the past
Congratulations, Dr Just Don't Die!
This was so good i wish could of seen a clearing of the caverns!
Daton way given that "this is the only way it could have ended" treatment

I was rewatching the wood/shell fortress video not too long ago, glad to see more content from you (also congrats on the phd)
Bro became a doctor for a meme. Congrats!
Congratulations doctor dont die

The video had a great intro and made the fort come alive
Holy crap! Good for you dude!
congrats man!
A very fun video! And massive congratulations on your PhD! 👍👍👍
Congratulations on your PHD and thank you for the great video!
This was amazing! Also gratz on hitting the doctor rank!
After watching it all, it is a shame the story has to end. But just maybe… the fun we had was in the journey we took to reach its end
This fort has has some solid HoddieHair vibes.
Man. Handsom, talented and you are well on your way to a PHD. What an incredible guy. Great video. Constantly my favourite DF content on youtube.
if your assigned noble isnt a resident of the fortress, it isnt possible to become a mountainhome
Ahh, yeah. I figured it was something like our duke being kept off screen. Is there any way to fix it you know of?

A pint a day keeps the dwarven doctor away. Congratulations!
Oh yeah, more Just Don't Die Dwarf Fortress! Today's a good day!
The title just made me go, WHAT does that mean? And so here I am lol [so glad I watched]
Dr. Just Don't Die
There’s a Warhammer Fantasy conversion on the Workshop. There’s guns, gromril, daemons, and Skaven. Don’t know if there’s a grudge system in place
This game is amazing lol
Super excited to watch this one, Kulalrimtar will endure(?)
heh, that doctor jokes a good one
YEAH!
The reason your dwarvers were vomiting was because of cave adaptation, not the literal piles of bodies. Great video, and good job Dr. J.D.D.!
GOOD VIDEO POOKIE
Good video
2 minutes in wondering what story this was continuing on until i heard "war effort".
Big congrats on the thesis defense! What was your doctorate in?
Immunology! It's kiiiiiiiinda the coolest science (no bias)
Cool video
Hear me out. Dwarf fortress…but humans…
What was doctoral thesis on?
I studied a particular type of immune cell in the context of tumors.
@ amazing, well done
Commenting for the algorithm
Do you use any mods and if so which mods?(also great vids)
Thanks! I use DF hack for some of the utilities (EG mass deleting the tombs instead of having to do it manually one by one) but no other mods.
@@JustDontDie Thank you❤

Its been a long time between videos, only for you to deliver such a low body count...
edit: congratulations on defending your thesis!
Out of curiosity, what is your thesis?
I studied a specific kind of immune cell in the context of tumor immunology.
@JustDontDie ohhh, that sounds pretty interesting, actually. Though I imagine it would also definitely fly over my head.
Never judge someone by their voice, I suppose. You sound young, I thought you are like undergrad college age at most.
dorfs
hell yeah
New df vid let's goooooo
i'm the 115th, nice
Erm, what the sigma?
if you want a challenge, try doing a game without any migrants
under 10 minutes with no bell
Why have you change the title? Not cool
Bro you have a doctoral thesus. Did you really need that sponsorship?
