- Mining is literally the first thing you do in most playthroughs. It's the basis for the most important economies and how you design almost all of your fort. Can you even survive without it? What about going out and winning wars while armed only in what you find without the most fundamental part of Dwarf-hood? Will they regain their honor by slaying two goblin empires or will they fall like the homeland wanted all along?

To be fair, their first response to being stolen from was "eat their children."
One trick for boosting rooms is to add an Armor stand and a Weapon rack to them. Dwarves somehow appreciate just having them. I guess it makes them feel like little nobles.
That is not unique to armor stands and weapon racks. Dwarfs will be happy with any furniture that is good quality in their room. The more expensive the better the thought they get from it. As long as it is in their room, they consider it theirs and will be proud of it. From what I've seen though they very rarely get positive thoughts from it. In fact, from what iv seen they will only get positive thoughts from seeing a new item in their room once and after that they will pretty much never get a positive thought from it again. Artifacts can give the mood buff more than once but that is not really connected to the owned items mood buff and is just the general mood buff anyone gets from seeing an artifact.
For karmic balance someone gonna make a settlement that never gets on the elves' bad side while becoming the capital city

@@JustDontDie I had my first Mountainhome be a fort built into the side of a cliff overlooking a waterfall ravine. The tavern was so majestic that I had more non-dwarf artists and musicians than I did dwarves total, and the local elf nations loved it at one point... until a single forgotten beast with stone skin and webs slaughtered 90 people and all but 2 of my soldiers...

Trade partners are trade partners, if they can bring me books and toys and useful animals I'm not going to snub that. It's only every so often that I accidentally offer something I forgot was made of animals but it doesn't seem to upset them so badly they don't come back next year. For a bunch of cannibals who see no issue with murdering outsiders or making a show out of torture they're very forgiving.
Thats my normal forts i try to keep the elves happy i like their animals for pets 😂. That and i love pumping magma up from below ive gotten pretty good at it usually get my magma forges setup about year 3 or 4 these days
I've taken this challenge and ended up making a 40k-type hive-city where my dwarves went from "oh we can't dig under a mountain? Then we'll make a new mountain to live under."
It was a pyramid at first, which turned into a 360º maginot-like inneficient and cramped but extremely defensible fortress, as clumped and tight as possible, all above the starting plains z level.
Granted at the end all corners of the map are strip mined and entrenched to hell with traps, such that i've been sitting for a while, idle, waiting to see if the "bulge of hell" would eventually collapse but it's population rose to its stability cap and stayed there for 200 years over a couple of real time nights.
Without my supervision, evil was thwarted at every turn and some were catastrophic on other playtroughs. Virtually every issue has self resolved so...
Maybe all they need trully is some lack of oversight or digging too soon too deep is a meta doomed to fail?
I'll try this again and this time ill collect more data.
Damnnn. The one thing I dislike about doing YT vids is that I can't do crazy long projects like that. Recording all that footage would take forever, and the 20-30 hours of 1400p footage for editing would kill my SSD and make my editing program hate me haha.

@@joaquinfernandez3977 I use a lot of zoom ins for my editing, and at the default 1920x1080p, a lot of things like the text and models look bad. By doing 1440p, I can zoom in while losing much less resolution.
The Dwarves decided to stick it to the elves by beating them at living in trees
I like to think that prehaps these dwarves had a bit of morrowind armor aesthetic going on
I thoroughly enjoyed this! I'd actually love to see a sequel to it, where you try to bring the city back from the impending tantrum death spiral!
I genuinely don't know if that's possible, but it might be an interesting one off/stream idea!

During unload once, my dwarves dropped and broke my only anvil. The way to work metal without an anvil is, you don't. The way to get an anvil without an anvil is, you don't. Some trader COULD bring an anvil to sell you, but, they don't.
Was this back before you could raid for it? And damn, every trader nowadays brings anvils, probably to stop exactly this from happening.
Loved this so much, but I feel like you really should have appended the mining rule to "No mining actions, unless it's to remove things you've constructed" XD

For your dwarves drinking pondwater, I think you could have probably set up wells over your running water for the mist generator, and marked that as the only clean water gathering area. if not that, then you could have built a hollow tower and let the water fill that on its way out, and used that as a cistern for the well.

Lastly, if their home empire broke their promise of ending their exile, then I think that the dwarves of Ciloblensham are no longer beholden to that same promise either. Let the strike the earth, and rebuild themselves into a new empire to rival the old... or re-arm to return home by force if necessary...
I know it's a small thing, but I'm marvelling at how you did the writing on the Master Plan screen. It took me a minute or so of pausing and analysing to see how you did that. I still don't really understand, but I think you have the font, cover it with something, and then erase the above layer as if you were writing it? Extremely neat
Pretty much! The text is a png. The nonmoving text is its own layer. The text that appears is its own layer covered up with a transparency mask that's erased via a hand-drawn path that 'proceeds' through the scene. You'll notice it isn't perfect, and there's bits of the next letter that appear a little early because it's close to the stroke on the preceding letter, but it's pretty good!
A top-grade video, movie-length, well-edited, good gameplay, fun challenge, DF itself is amazing... just great all the way down. Congratulations on taking on the world with shells and wood!

I feel the exact same way! Normaly playthroughs aer good the first few times, but once you get it, constraints create opportunities.

gotta love taking the concept of goblinium to its absolute maximum like this.
I'm not 100% sure of this but after some initial testing it seems like what causes sites to become unraidable are soldiers who are counted as part of their population but are currently engaged in a siege or marching somewhere else by the event system.

I use to give all my civilians shell armor. You can pick armor by color instead of by metal, so white for bone and grey for mussels (said also for iron)
Where do you choose armor by color?

Also as someone who tried and failed to conquer a goblin empire because of its demonic leader, seeing the message about the jade brute being beheaded gave me a great big smile.

Hey Just Don't Die, I have an idea I've been trying to do but succeeded because of fun
Make a Tower fort. You could have the story be the dwarves were inspired to build to the heavens. Bonus points if you dig down and make the tower go from the depths of the earth to the heights of heaven. Bridges could be built to connect to other areas from the tower across the map you are using creating a great visual tower.
Bonus points if you use the magma sea as a moat.

I haven't played Dwarf Fortress and this is the only channel where I've watched it. Because of that the only thing I know about mist generators is that they're so hard to build properly that you've failed initially every time.

Reason for making metal blocks instead of bars: If you use bars, they still show in your stocks menu as bars even when constructed, making it difficult to determine how many you have freely available at a glance.

This was fun, but I have to say, I'm kinda sad it didn't end with killing the Jade Beast in combat. I was expecting you to bring silver hammers or something to try and crack him... Surrendering was a wild decision for a demon
This is such a fun challenge!! I wish we could play the game as the different races in 'fortress' mode so we could expand what kind of game play styles there were (Elves eating sentient beings' hearts for fun?!) but melding different challenges to strive towards is also very cool.
Any chance of an upcoming challenge that limits your fort to only 10 dwarves?
Probably not. Low population = little to do and very few hands to work, which means doing anything cool would itself take way longer.

historically speaking, polearms, whether that be pikes, spears, etc, have always been the weapon of choice for warfare. therefore, you should create a fortress with an above ground medieval castle, and staff it with squads of pikedwarves

you can somewhat use color grey to filter for shell, there is a fort where i made a shell military too. also wasnt ash fire safe ? : D (might be a bit too easy)

In older versions the workaround to force equipping bone or shell gear was to require the colour to be white if I'm remembering correctly. Looks green in this version though, so try experimenting with both!
I didn't see a way to specify armor color? Am I being blind?

Dwarfs forced to stay outside tend to get grumpy like fisher dworfs, if i build walls and "roof" outside station garison inside building do they still get grumpy? Do i just keep everyone underground or is it fine?
I didn't notice unhappy thoughts about being inside, and given how the game treats beds, I'd imagine that anything over their head is enough to stop those.
The exiles return to the empire, and move to form a new hold in the area, a true fort this time, and become Mountainhome, to lure in the king's court, who will die for their acts when their throne room fills with lava.
