  • Nominated this year for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, the film "Ford v Ferrari" tells the story of the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world's most prestigious endurance race. While the movie covers the race's underlying rivalry between auto giants Ford Motor Company and Ferrari, its true focus is on the two men, played by Matt Damon and Christian Bale, who helped develop Ford's racing program and establish the American automaker as a force to be reckoned with on the track. We highlight the real story of Ford v. Ferrari with some of the details that didn’t make it to the big screen.

Hawaiian Punch "We all knew who won Le Mans that year"
Yes, Dan Gurney. He was easily leading the race when he retired with technical issues on his Ford GT40 with only 6 hours to go. It was also Dan Gurney (not Ken Miles) who did the fastest lap in the race, and also in qualifying for that matter. In 1967 Gurney came back to LeMans and won it in great style and managed a (then) record 388 laps compared to the 360 laps of the winners in 1966. Miles inherited the lead when Gurney's radiator started leaking. The movie completely omits this part.
And yes Dan Gurney won races in Formula 1, Indycars, Nascar, Can-Am, Trans-Am, LeMans and Daytona.

    • @zabaleta66

@@McLarenMercedes Gurney was the fastest but you have to finish the race. McLaren/Amon were worthy winners, after all they were also well ahead when the team orders to finish together were given, which they complied with. Miles ignored the orders and only buttoned off at the end. The race also had finished earlier on the last lap at 4pm....the photo finish being purely a publicity stunt.

No one mentioned the British engineer John Wyer who basically perfected the GT40 and getting rid of the bad handling and engineered the car to win Le Mans.
He also helped Porsche in building the iconic 917 Porsche car that won their first Le Mans in 1970 and 1971, this victory literally made the company the most successful car manufacturer in Le Mans after being an underdog for 20 years.

    • @Loulovesspeed

He disagreed with Roy Lunn, Ford's Chief Design Engineer for the GT40 in some critical issues including which power plant to be used. Important correction: Ferrari entered only 2 factory cars in '66 Le Mans not because confident to win, only because that's what Ferrari had at the time to race at Le Mans. That's the reason Enzo wanted to sell production area to Ford, racing both in F1 and prototypes was beyond Ferrari budget, that's why they had a very limited production of the P-serie models, recycling when possible chassis and body parts. This movie is about an underdog trying to beat a giant, but the underdog wasn't Ford.

If you are truly proud to be an American, then you should try reading the truth as to what transpired in that famous finish line fiasco. It was the governing body, The A.C.O. that screwed Miles - not Ford. While you can take issue with Ford's idea for the 3 car finish, they were smart enough to get approval from the ACO before proceeding with it. The ACO initially said "no problem". Unfortunately, they changed their mind at the end of the race, and that is what screwed Miles out of his deserved win. Put the blame where it belongs!

Loulovesspeed The MkII and MkIIII did have a NASCAR type of motor that was detuned. It was an Aluminum block and heads. The NASCAR motor was iron. Phil Remington was in the wind tunnel 3 months before the 67 LeMans race making changes to the MkIIII body and developed the brake change system of replacing the disk and calipers in a minute and a half. Yes Miles did most of the testing and recognized what needed to be changed but it was Rems fabrication skills and talents that made the GT40 program successful. Ford vs Ferrari is a good movie. It just is not about racing as much as the Ford Machine and how Miles was robbed of the triple crown of endurance racing.
All Shelby engines were basic American hot rod motors. This is what makes this story so interesting. A bunch of hot Rod mechanics took a car that was basically hacked by the British, given to Shelby and his hot rod crew, completely rebuilt it and won the 24 hour of LeMans 66 and 67.

This LM '66 'win' was the best thing to happen to McLaren that year at his 6th Le Mans attempt (3rd attempt with Ford). He was quoted as having no regrets about this win that cost Ken Miles the unprecedented triple crown, a driver he knew well and shared drives with at LM '65 and others. McLaren was more complicit in Fords PR and political scheming at LM '66 than I first realised, his sucking up to Ford also helped keep his McLaren F1 team business alive.

I certainly wasn't there, and I don't want to be one of the "I had a buddy who..." guys, but my dad raced with a lot of Holman Moody parts in the 60s/70s and constantly heard the stories about how Ford treated its racing partners. Hollywood is Hollywood and it creates drama. But from what I remember dad telling me all those years, and after watching the movie, I came away thinking Shelby and Miles were pretty spot on, Iacocca was probably more overt than portrayed, and Beebe was every bit the snake he looked to be. Miles was screwed, but by Ford and not the FIA. They spent $9M for that photo of the three Mk2s crossing the line together. And by the way, according to Evans Frankenheimer, Lorenzo Bandini was a very delightful and funny guy to be around, unlike his character in the movie.

I will remember the "Ken Miles" and respect it as the one who lost because of shity rules but DOMINATED the race track like a TRUE KING would at le mans race at that time :)

I think that ken slowed down because he knew that the ford team didn’t like him that much already and that him not slowing down would result in him losing his job so I think that he realized that putting food on the table for his family was more important than a la ma win but it would have been even more amazing if he did win la ma as well

I would argue that surviving the great depression was Ford's greatest challenge as it was for most companies in that era. It is blatantly obvious that this was Miles and Shelby's achievement and they could have pulled it off a year sooner had big business not tried to micro manage the effort.
