@esweber0, Well, probably at close range, as I was doing, just to make sure you are shooting your best. Keep in mind it will open up dramatically long range. Those first high shot I took on the paper after raising the rear sight would have shot over the 80-yard gong, even holding on the bottom of it. You want to be able to see exactly what you're doing.

We were taught to use the FORS method to adjusting sights in the Army Infantry. Here's how it works:
F---front
O---opposite
R---rear
S---same
If you're going to adjust your sights, start at the rear since it's less confusing. You adjust the REAR sight the SAME way you want to bring the rounds to match your point of aim (POA). So if your point of impact (POI) is high, bring your rear sight DOWN, and see if your new POA matches your new POI. It's simple...if you're adjusting only your rear sight. Sight down to impact down. Clear as mud? Hahaha. It's actually quite easy once you start throwing lead downrange...

Can you please explain how it's the opposite for the front sight? Lets say I line my sights up and I shoot and hit left, now, doing the opposite with the front which would be right, I would then have to aim the gun further left to line the sights up again, would this not worsen them problem?
I love all your videos!! I know this is an older video but I always just keep a simple sight rule in my head that makes it simple.
Just move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go!! If point of impact is low and you want to shoot higher move the rear sight up,if POI is high and you want to hit lower just bring the rear sight down same with windage. If you want poi to go further right mover rear sight right, Same for going left. Just move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go. I am a long time Olympic Style pistol shooter and I have shot around one million .22 caliber rounds in my life. Simply put, I have been adjusting sights on my target pistols for years and years... I don't think I could have explained how to adjust gun sights much better than you did in this video; without getting so far into the technical world, that your average layperson wouldn't get lost. Good Job and another great video.

As someone who wasn't raised around guns and having never needed them in my life, I have begun to be interested. As a curious person I want to learn.
This man doesn't just show you a gun, send a few rounds and bullshit for 5 minutes for likes. He is knowledgeable and can break information down to in a way that makes firearms seem less intimidating for a new person.
@PappaKnowsBest, That is easier, except people will then question themselves when they've not done it for a long time. They'll say, "Let's see, you move the sight in the direction you want the point of impact to move, or is the opposite of that, or is that just for the front sight if it's adjustable?" That's why I don't even think about all that; if I know the result must be that I have to get the sights aligned with the hits, I'm good. :-)

That is definitely a help. My problem is the trigger issue. I need to learn how to get that nice clean trigger break and then hopefully start to group my shots well enough to trust a sight adjustment! Thanks for the great lessons!!!
Practice dry firing with snap caps, find the spot where the trigger breaks you’ll be able to feel a small click there, then see if you can balance a penny on your front sight while you pull the trigger. It’s just about learning how long or short your trigger pull is and understanding the weight of it.
Because that's exactly what everybody forgets; it's the whole reason for the explanation. Duh.

Simple but effective. Pretty much what I thought but wanted to verify there wasnt anything I could do wrong, or, an even easier way existed so I found it re-assuring. Thanks for taking the time Hickok!
Shooting High: Adjust rear sight DOWN.
Shooting Low: Adjust rear sight UP.
Shooting Left: Adjust rear sight to the RIGHT.
Shooting Right: Adjust rear sight to the LEFT.
The basic understanding is the 3 parts of the sight picture which are:
1. Rear sight.
2. Front sight.
3. Target.
Presuming the front sight is installed correctly (properly centered), then the adjustments are always made at the rear sight while keeping the sight picture inline with #'s 1, 2 & 3 above so the gun can be accurately adjusted to hit where the point of aim is on the target.
I was taught the same thing with a saying that’s easy to remember (IMHO). Move the rear sight where you want the bullets to go.
Shooting high: adjust rear sight down to move bullets down
Shooting left: adjust rear sight right to move bullets right
This information is just what I needed

i notice almost all beginners think they are moving the actual barrel when they adjust the front sights. so they wind up doing the opposite of what they should do when they adjust there sights. for some reason its so hard for them to understand all they have to do is just adjust the sights to where the bullets are hitting. instead they adjust the sights to where they want the bullet to hit. i hope that made sense.

@@erikboink4280 No it wouldn't. Sorry. Hold your fingertips or hands up one in front of the other, about a foot apart, in front of you as though simulating sight picture. Now, lift your rear (closest to you) fingertip or hand up an inch. Now, move your hand farthest from you up a bit to re-create your sight picture. That is the front of your weapon moving up to re-align sight picture, thus moving your POI UP.

easy rule of thumb: rear site moves in the direction you want your rounds to go. front site moves opposite of where you want your rounds to go. Meaning: your rounds are hitting to the left? move your rear site to the right or move your front site to the left. same applies for up and down.
Yep, that's pretty simple, except that when it comes time to adjust sights, so many people start asking themselves, "Let's see, I think you move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go, or is the front sight, or do you move the rear sight in the opposite direction?" :-)
Hit the nail on the head... sometimes we overthink. don't know how many times I was asked the same question. Its fine if you have a fixed front sight, when you have front and rear sights that move, well that's when the overthinking starts.

Great description. It's a simple concept, but, unless you do this often, it can easily be complicated. it get more complex with adjustable front,. and rear sights. Anyone who wants to know this stuff, just needs to practice with their weapon, and become familiar with it. Thanks for another objective, and clear video, Mr. Hickok
I've always remembered it by saying move the sight in the direction the hits need to move. If you're hitting left, the hits need to move right, so move the rear sight right.
Thanks for all your great videos... when I'm bored at work or can't go shooting for whatever reason, I just watch some Hickok videos. It's the next best thing to being at the range myself.

when you raise the sights you naturally raise the front post to match your back sights which is why your shot rises if that's helps any further

With iron sights, it's always easier for me to use the opposite language that you use: If the gun is shooting low I want the barrel to be pointing HIGHER, so if I raise the rear sight I'll have to lift up the front of the barrel to align the sights, and so, with the same (correct) sight picture, the barrel will be pointing higher.
For some reason, when I'm thinking about scopes, the language you use is best, IMO: move the sight to where the bullet hit. If you have a gun vise you can use that technique directly to sight in a scope with one shot: aim at bullseye; note where shot actually hit; put gun in vise and adjust to aim at bullseye; then adjust crosshairs to aim where bullet ACTUALLY hit. One shot, and you're right on (at least at that distance -- IF your gun vise really holds the gun steady).
GetMeThere1 I understand completely having be shooting and adjusting similarly. That said I’m not sure a total novice could understand your explanation. Perhaps a drawing illustrating the visual line of sight and one of the bullet trajectory would be easier to understand. ---mikey

first time in my life i shot a real gun today after watching your videos with a lee enfield Mk3 i guess. I scored 8 out of 10 shorts at 200 meters and i only missed my first and 3rd shot. my score shows how much your videos helped me :) guys at the range will not believe that i shot a rife for the first time :P honestly the only shooting i did before was in video games and with BB guns. thanks Hickok45 thanks a lot :)
My personal favourite is the Lee Enfield Mk 1 No. 4, and I'm Canadian, so its a bit expected.

+Ryk E Lee That's the problem; new shooters, or even senile old shooters, forget which way to move the sight or which sight to move in the direction you want the impact to move. Let's see, was it the FRONT sight you move in the direction you want the impact to move or was it the REAR sight? For experienced shooters, it seems pretty basic, but it's a little like how some people get confused about the time change. That's the reason I tried to get the concept across, even if I belabored it a bit too much, that however you move the sights and whatever sort of sights you have, and whatever line you are trying to remember, like the good one you mention, basically, you just need to do whatever it takes to get your sights pointed at where the bullet is hitting. On lots of old military rifles, for example, you have to move the front sight if you want to adjust windage; cannot even move the rear sight.
+hickok45 First off, I'm a fan, secondondly, I'm impressed you'd respond to my post, thirdly, you're doing a great job at sharing info with the neophytes. Advising the folk to learn to keep a consistent sight picture is as important as knowing which way to crank the sights to find the zero. Stay strong, stay healthy and keep on keeping on.
You are correct, but with the front sight it's the opposite.If you want your groupe more to the left, you'll have to move the front sight more to the right.
David Maximus, watch his video again. You are backward. Go try your method, you'll quickly learn.
FYI, I just picked up a M&P Shield 2.0. It's hitting slightly right at 7 yards, was a few inches more right at 15 yards. It is off enough that I'd be missing in a bowling pin match. Thier owners manual says to NOT MOVE THE REAR SIGHT. So, I ordered a sight adjustment tool, rather inexpensive at $39. I'm trying to move my front sight to the right so my bullets will come left. The sight is very tight, hasn't moved yet, and I feel like I'm cranking pretty hard on the wrench. So now I'm soaking the sight in oil, as per the tool instructions. We'll see if I can get it to move in a few hours... wish me luck! (Sorry for my ramble...)

I have a Taurus 709 slim. good little gun 400+ rounds no malfunctions. I shoot low left. so I would adjust right and up??????
Christopher brunson When I first started shooting I always shot low left. It is most likely two things: anticipating the shot and milking the grip. Look up how to correct anticipating the shot and shots going left. When you practice focus on one correction at a time.

A quick comment about terminology as I watch this video. I grew up with the terms "how to aim" (your sight picture) and "where to aim" (where to hold the sight picture). Mentioning this synonymous terminology might help disambiguate your "where to hold" comments for viewers that might be confused (as you mention in this video). FWIW

I always think in this way. Always move your rear sight the way you want your bullet to travel. The front sight is the opposite.

Thank you so much for making this video on setting sights; when I was young I would use my cousin's air rifle which had misaligned sights ( milk cartons filled with water were the preferred targets ) I learned to make the correction myself by aiming manually. What's funny is, at that time I had no idea sights could be adjusted at all LOL - I figured everyone with misaligned sights was doing manual corrections like I did.

I am in Arizona. We don't do daylight saving time, and we don't need a permit to carry concealed, and we can sell guns to other Arizonans without involving an FFL (up to a certain number per year). We still sight our guns the same way, though.

nope, don't need any sort of permit for anything here thank God. Its still a good idea to get a ccw though, really speeds up the purchase process of a new weapon and police do appreciate it I think when you are able to provide that to them on a traffic stop when carrying.

Super clear. Really appreciate your explanations. I’ve been having trouble with my PPQ 22LR rear sight loosening. My range smith tightened it down but the elevation needs a touch of adjustment. Now I feel comfortable tweaking it. Thx.

That made perfect sense, I just picked up a Springfield XDM compact. I’ve never really shot pistols before, the way you explained it, is exactly how I sight in my bow though. I move my sight wherever my bullets are hitting, as long as my front sight is level with my back sight! Please correct me if I am wrong!

Love your videos. They are, by far, the best on the subject of firearms on TH-cam. On this video, however, I think you made the subject overly complicated and may have confused some viewers on the subject.
I think there are three takeaways on this subject.
1- Don't change your point of aim unnecessarily to compensate for misaligned sights.
2- When "testing" the alignment of your sights, hold on the same point of aim or target.
3- Make sight alignment changes by moving the rear sight in the direction you want the bullets to go. For example, if your bullets are hitting below the target, move the rear sights higher since you want your bullets to hit higher.

Sight alignment is the front sight post centered in the rear aperture and flushed with the top of the rear sight aperture. Sight picture is that "alignment" on, over or under what you're gonna kill spending on the wind values or target movement left to right, and up or down "hold" for the round drop depending on the distance and caliber...Parris Island circa 1981...;) ooohfknrah...
