About mods for games giving you grief on Linux (given we're probably talking about wine/proton), one of the big offenders is case-sensitivity of path/filename. Windows ignores case, Linux and whatever filesystem you're on interprets Uppercase.file and lowercase.file as two different files. Next time you create an ext4 partition remember to turn on selective casefolding, which enables you to mark directories as case-insensitive. Been doing this since the feature was introduced and it completely circumvents the problem. Writing up a howto is a bit much for a youtube comment, the terms to search for are "linux ext4 casefolding".
One of the most difficult things about switching to linux.. also, using alt + backspace instead of ctrl + backspace to go back one word is sooooo annoying lol.
@@quintit Do you mean going back as in to delete the last word left of the pointer? If so give ctrl + w a try, I find that a lot more ergonomic than reaching for backspace. Moving the pointer one word back would be alt + b though. (I'm just guessing that whatever you're using is based on GNU readline, otherwise those shortcuts might do nothing or something different)
I've tried and failed at setting up voicemeter, so a video on how you use that with EarTrumpet would be nice, also OpenShell and Handbrake would be of interest to me
Sound Lock by 3 Appes is a gem when using headphone. Especially when theres a mic drop or a Weddle laugh that breaks the sound barrier. Saved my ears many a time.
The recommendation from the last software sharing video, of the "EVERYTHING" file-search application, has been *ultra* invaluable! Still looking for alternative modifications to replace stock Windows Explorer.
freecommander by Marek Jasinski is a good win-expl replacement. 32bit is free, 64 requires a donation. Lots of settings to make it how you want, (bit daunting), then save/export the settings for future installs.
The software I use every single day is, in no particular order (some are the same as yours): Firefox, Thunderbird, Playnite, Discord, MusicBee, Affinity Photo 2, LibreOffice, MPC-HC, DaVinci Resolve, KeePass 2, Audacity, various components of PowerToys, FreeFileSync and Serviio! Edit: I totally agree with you on Discord, it's... well, yeah.
Your thoughts on Malwarebytes would be interesting, especially if you find good, cheaper alternatives. I don't know of anything better atm, but the level you have to go to in MB to tell it that things like PIA are ok / legit isn't the most convenient.
Voice Meeeter, always. Multiple stereo receivers with their own EQs, one is just for extra bass. Also easy to bump up mic volume. I know you already know of that software.
Oh, one more trick if you use Open-shell start menu, If you can see through the taskbar (like moving a window under taskbar threshold line and that windows on a percentage is visible under the line (see through)), than if using Winamp with Milkdrop plugin and use it desktop mode, before you start the plugin, hide the taskbar, run the plugin inside winamp, unhide taskbar, and voila, you have a taskbar visualisation, so you can maximize your windows, you will still be in the disco. ;) Rock on! Greetings from Hungary.
I like Windows Commander. Any old version is fine. I've been using it since back in the day, when it was Total Commander. For video media, VLC player. For music, good old WinAmp v2.95. Though more often I stream my local preferred classic rock station. And Greenshot. It's simple and effective. I used to use it a lot when I had to make workflow instructions for work, making screenshots of our ERP-system and adding in bullet points and such.
I always love seeing a list like this, and seeing mostly the stuff I use. Nice to know I'm still using the right stuff. Haha. Though, cherrytree is my favorite list, but it is not on mobile. It's hierarchal note taking, so you can have subnotes, collapse them if there's too much on the screen. It's not checklist focused or anything, so it feels more like a place for my ideas, rather than a list that wants to pester me to complete things.
The hierarchical note taking would be so useful.... but I seem to write most of my ideas using the android app... since I am usually just walking around then I get an idea.
Thank you for acknowledging the upsides and downsides of certain software (mainly Discord and Windows.) Yes in a perfect world we would all be on Linux, but it unfortunately is not ideal for every use case. That doesn't mean we give up either, however. We try it everywhere, and use it where it fits. I will indeed mention to everyone I know that I would like to use Signal for direct messaging and small group chats, but until they give in, it is Discord for now. Unrelated note, please show me more Foobar, I have a completely stock install and I am always clearing and reloading songs onto a playlist, and I know that isn't the correct use but I know no other way!
I use a large TV as an additional moniter. I'm always changing up what I want coming through the TV and what I want coming through my system speakers. I also use a USB switch to move my DAC from Home PC to Work PC. So my audio outputs that are available at any momment are constantly changing. Digging through windows setting to change stuff like that quickly is a pain. Ear Trumpet looks great for this.
Everything app is very useful for finding files. Especially, if you have multiple hard drives because it can scan the files and folders in multiple drives to find what you are looking for. It's much better than window's built-in search tool.
Foobar has gotten so much love but I have all ways been a winamp guy would appreciate a vid on it, how does it compare to winamp, how well does it handle playlists and shuffle. Also how do you set it up with your nas like can you stream your music to your phone or out of the house like plex.
Talking about music: MP3tag, maybe you want to rearrange track number by date when you discover new music and wanna listen it in the order you discover it (like in soundcloud) but they come with the tracknumber already embedded, well you can change that in just simple steps. You can even rename, maybe you have tons of tracks and wanna rename them using the metadata like first the year, or first the artist, or first album or first artist; I really love it, make playlisting easy and simple.
Other stuff that probably lots of people already know / use. JPEGview Sharex Audacity (I use it for making music "louder") Sumatra PDF (use it to read some weird "PDF" formats *.epub) Mousotron (Im an obsesive person when it comes down to have records of everything, pictures, music, mouse clicks) Flawless widescreed (For people with ultrawide screens, and game) Smartcontrol (is a philips utility that allows to control most of the settings of the monitor even if is not philips brand, I'm using it with an LG ultrawide monitor, so instead of using the joystick button just use smartcontrol)

how does PIA compare to TorGuard, if you happen to know, for VPN? PIA looks a lot more budget-friendly for sure! And I didn't even know you could do something like that split-tunneling! Thanks for the info!! loving the pixel art/game idea - can't wait to see that for sure
I'd like a full video on your experiences with linux all the way from your first distro and reasons why you prefer windows, and maybe add in some features or services linux could add that would make you switch.
It's really simple... FL Studio doesn't really work... and my premium virtual instruments just don't work at all. So, making music is far better on Windows. Otherwise, modding Morrowind and Skyrim... that was a complete failure for me, so I gave up. I also found that I spent about 90% more time fussing with the interface, customizing, and fixing little OS things... which is amazing, but also takes up so much of my time. I'm too pragmatic and just want to work on my music and play my games. I do that more than I look at the OS.
i think linux def has time sinks when it comes to fixing or fiddling with things 😆 the music thing, i had the same issue with lmms plugins, music sounds are very important to get right coding however on linux is alot easier imo 🤔 and automating workflow with bash and things
terminal, kate, krita, libresprite, blender, lmms, godot, git, bash :p matrix instead of discord, element or nheko :) pixel art videos or video production or just more gaming content is cool :P arm linux is cool too i got a pinephone and rock 5, they are fun 😁 ive used those music plugins yeah its hard, maybe a virtual machine would be cool, mods... havnt delved into it much haha
I have actually been using Vivaldi for years now because of your original video way back. It's pretty great in terms of customisation and features. Only complaint is that it still launches a little slowly
I never got into foobar myself. I just found that vlc works really good for both my laptop and my phone, so I never really looked for an alternative. When it comes to powertools I find that sometimes to much choice can be bad. I had this dillema back in the day when I switched completly from Windows do Linux. After 2 yearts of running mint I still didn't have it like I wanted to and its not because I didnt know how to do things, its because there were so many option that I simply couldnt decide. After your video I'm gonna give firefox another try or maybe something else.
I'd like to see a video on how you set up foobar. Not sure if you rip music CD's with Foobar, but you can adjust the offset of your CD drive with it (every CD drive has a different offset, you have to find your hardware and enter the offset values manually)
I just can't live without Obsidian Markdown these days, and throw Syncthing into that box too because I don't have a NAS but still needed cloud-like sync!
Do you not monitor your hardware? I feel blind without knowing cpu usage/temp and more importantly network in and out usage. I love knowing that if some program starts sending data to the internet i see it right away.
I Think that the newer beta version of open shell is windows 11 compatible. One software i use alot is Everything, it indexes all the files on your pc and makes finding stuff so much easier. Windows search allways gives me issues and is so buggy
There's really not much reason to hate on Microsoft these days. Windows is pretty good, Azure is awesome and their developer experience has always been good. Out of the big tech companies I feel they are the "least evil" right now.
I use ear trumpet also, but never have used a music service, I like owning the songs and mixing my own playlists, but then again most of the music I listen to is instrumental.
10:13 It's just what any business is going to prioritise under Capitalism tbh. The point of production isn't to meet needs, it's to build profit. Revolt is a neat open source alternative to Discord that's been gaining traction recently. Other than that, there's always decentralised chatting methods like the Matrix protocol that can be used to find places.
Actually, what cutting software do you use for the videos? Wanted to make a huge video from all my vacation shoots but can't decide which one is the easiest for my application :D
Web browsers have been garbage since Opera retired Presto engine back in 2013. I wonder if you ever used Opera then? I then switched to Firefox but when Firefox switched to Proton I went to Waterfox Classic and have not looked backed.
I get any game I can on Gog over steam for the drm-free reason... and I keep an exe of the files on my nas if it's something I really care about. Steam is a better experience, but it's whatever. I don't play the platform for hours, I play the game.
Cool video, I installed a few things you mentionned to test it. I think Power Toys would be worth doing a video about it, looks complex. One utility software I find cool: spacesniffer (for manually cleaning your hard drive and finding potential bloat/heavy files, really neat). I switched from Linux to windows for the same reason, can’t use ableton and vsts. You got super good daws on Linux though, like renoise, bigwig and reaper.
Me myself and I are close to moving fully to Linux. Just waiting for a few little features and fixes such as better Multi monitor support, better VRR, and HDR support. The first 2 are already being fleshed out under Wayland and HDR will be coming soon, maybe in Plasma6. Not happy about being forced to use Windows+apps atm, but got no choice if I want smooth experience with features I want.
I actually use StartIsBack daily, as well as Wallpaper Engine. Might try firefox, I was using Vivaldi a while, then went to Chrome.. Fubar video requested,
Same. I’ve been using it for 3 years and haven’t looked back. However I still use Edge for PDFs. It has this feature where it will basically turn any pdf into an audiobook.
I never got into customizing my desktop much because I'm rarely on my desktop... and I don't usually care to monitor things since I am not into heavy overclocking... so I just customize my start menu and add a wallpaper... and that's all I need. Is there a big feature you like with rainmeter?
Hi Tek, new subscriber here, you hinted at this in the past but could you make a tutorial on how to manage game folders, launchers and all of that stuff? I'd like to understand how to properly manage my folders both on my SSD and Hard drive.
Well, a lot of this depends on what launcher you are using... Steam, GoG, etc. My only real rule is to not install them into the program files directory... otherwise modding can be very annoying. I usually just have a "games" folder somewhere and install everything there.
If the installer gives you the option, dont install it into program files, like teksyndicate already said. Create a programs folder somewhere. or just opt for the portable version of appliations whenever possible.
MusicBee is the best audio player out there, bar none. It's the only Windows software I use on Linux, because nothing else compares. As a matter of fact, nothing else compares on any OS. I used to use foobar2000 a decade or so ago. It's a great music player, but I needed a lot of plugins just to get to how I like it. MusicBee does everything out of the box, with no plugins required, and it's not bloated.
how dare you call me out like that! lol been using spotify and youtube music for a couple years at this point i have whole genres of music i listen too but i dont know any of the artists. prime example being the one you gave witch house
Winamp wtf. Still using it today. I have a big library from my younger days. Also add offline music that I like even today. Don't use streaming. Winamp will run on linux, but i use aimp on linux it runs better.
Linux is easy... you just have to be prepared to tinker with your OS for 90% of the time... and then work or game for 10%. But seriously, it all depends on what you're doing. If you are using stuff that also works well on Linux, you are probably good to go. Linux mint is a good starter OS before you get into the other distros.
basically ya its a clone from the code before it was made close source might even be missing features, no point other then its free of direct price might help some smart broke kid / teen out there or cheap bro like me that grew up a bit rough it also stops a bad habit of piracy {personally I feel comfort knowing open software like it will live like a zombie} and might have a chance of teaching someone reading the code @@teksyndicate
Wait... you said the snipping feature saves the whole screen? Tell me more about it. When I share a screenshot using that, can anyone really somehow get the rest of the image? How is that possible? please elaborate.
It seems they may have fixed this a month later, if I read that correctly... but here is what it was doing: www.theverge.com/2023/3/21/23650657/windows-snipping-tool-crop-screenshots-vulnerability
Void Tools Everything.....( Windows only sadly ) : total game changer for file indexing and searching ( Firefox / Thunderbird / Sublime Text / Putty / Rufus / Sysinternals )
I like to use ShareX for my screenshots. Print Screen captures whole screen, Alt+Print Screen captures active window and ctrl + Print Screen captures desired area.

Fast stone image viewer +1

I miss the ability to change the taskbar color. That was such a cool feature back in win10.
One of the givens, VLC :)
Same on the Windows v Linux. Windows on my home computer, Linux for work.

I'm curious what your fancy zones look like. I try to keep windows with common aspect ratios at different sizes.
Winrar 4 life ❤
Great list! And thank you for talking a bit about Linux.
I use Axialis IconWorkshop and Photoshop (sometimes Adobe Express) to create my own icons for my Windows 7/10 system.
Could you do a video on the end of support for Windows 10?! And I miss your old hairstyle... LOL
I would be very interested in your pihole setup and how you block things - which lists you use
I still use good old sound forge and have Linux mint on one of my computers. I would like to see more about the power toys and how you use it.
Davinci Resolve is amazing it is free
I really, really, really wish I had learned Davinci Resolve first... I'm using Premiere and it has been so hard to switch.
Would love to have a video going into more detail with Ear Trumpet.
Linux Mint, terminal, nemo, text, Firefox, lutris, asusctl, jellyfin, davinci resolve, makemkv, handbrake, obs, transmission, gimp and rawtherapee.
Web browsers have been garbage since Opera retired Presto engine back in 2013. I wonder if you ever used Opera then?
I then switched to Firefox but when Firefox switched to Proton I went to Waterfox Classic and have not looked backed.
I want to know how we can all go back to Windows 7, or even Windows XP. Best times were had back then.
your thoughts on GOG vs Steam? what games to you get on GOG vs Steam? I know the big thing with GOG is it's drm-free
I get any game I can on Gog over steam for the drm-free reason... and I keep an exe of the files on my nas if it's something I really care about. Steam is a better experience, but it's whatever. I don't play the platform for hours, I play the game.
I vote for Fancy Zones powertoy for a dedicated video. I didn't know about that one. Maybe I'm the only one. It's not as sexy as the others.
Could you do a video on how to set up foobar for your mobile phone?
Indeed. I have it set up now to stream to my android phone.. foobar is ugly on Mobile, but it's for listening, so I give it a pass
2 years left before they drop win 10 support, I've been dual booting linux for a while now and it's getting better lol.
I actually use StartIsBack daily, as well as Wallpaper Engine. Might try firefox, I was using Vivaldi a while, then went to Chrome.. Fubar video requested,
Been loving Brave
Same. I’ve been using it for 3 years and haven’t looked back.
However I still use Edge for PDFs. It has this feature where it will basically turn any pdf into an audiobook.
@@michiganjack1337 used to use Google and Firefox but Brave been very good
Same.. just wish they would use the FF engine. ATM uses Chromium like he mentioned in the vid.
@@michiganjack1337hi, where do I find that feature? Turning the PDF into an audiobook?
I can't live without Lightshot to take screenshots.
P.S. cover PIA , or vpns in general.
Great video
Would like to see what you software you use on your mobile
Awesome video!! We would love a foobar setup tutorial!!
He actually has some from a longgg time ago. They still apply tho
A video on your foobar setup would be great
This TH-cam algorithm just buries my videos lol

I'm surprised you don't use Rainmeter. It's great!
I never got into customizing my desktop much because I'm rarely on my desktop... and I don't usually care to monitor things since I am not into heavy overclocking... so I just customize my start menu and add a wallpaper... and that's all I need. Is there a big feature you like with rainmeter?
@@teksyndicate generally just the look of it. I don't do anything too crazy with it. Weather, quick notes and rss feeds are enough for me.
You can get it to work with foobar to display album art, play/pause and skip track. Looks really nice.
emacs, firefox, gog galaxy.
As an alternative to discord, some people say element. But I rarely use it
and Windows does let you select specific audio devices per app now.
is that in windows 11? It doesn't seem to be doing anything for me on 10... maybe I need to look in a different place.
10 "app volume and device pereferences". Settings > system > sound > scroll all the way down.
You have to to it through the "setitngs" app, there is no way through the normal control-panel-style menus.@@teksyndicate
@@quintit Thanks, I appreciate the help.
MusicBee does everything out of the box, with no plugins required, and it's not bloated.
how dare you call me out like that! lol
been using spotify and youtube music for a couple years at this point
i have whole genres of music i listen too but i dont know any of the artists. prime example being the one you gave witch house
How do you make your foobar look insanely cool like that? It almost looks like musicbee which is what I would like to get.
th-cam.com/video/2wQhWJujoBA/w-d-xo.html
for the record, I still prefer the regular theme... but this is much prettier.
Winamp wtf. Still using it today.
I have a big library from my younger days. Also add offline music that I like even today. Don't use streaming.
Winamp will run on linux, but i use aimp on linux it runs better.
For Foobar2k, what skin is that you show in video?
teach me how to use linux, i want to get away from windows or Mac os
Linux is easy... you just have to be prepared to tinker with your OS for 90% of the time... and then work or game for 10%.
But seriously, it all depends on what you're doing. If you are using stuff that also works well on Linux, you are probably good to go. Linux mint is a good starter OS before you get into the other distros.
Would love to see a voicemeeter video. I use it and would love some guidance
godot, krita, libresprite, pixelorama, tic-80, blender, ardour daw, helm vst,
is there any reason to use libresprite over aseprite other than the licensing?
basically ya its a clone from the code before it was made close source might even be missing features, no point other then its free of direct price might help some smart broke kid / teen out there or cheap bro like me that grew up a bit rough it also stops a bad habit of piracy {personally I feel comfort knowing open software like it will live like a zombie} and might have a chance of teaching someone reading the code @@teksyndicate
will also add few more daw's lmms is amazing, reaper has no trial end after 30 days,
My computer does things.
Wait... you said the snipping feature saves the whole screen? Tell me more about it.
When I share a screenshot using that, can anyone really somehow get the rest of the image? How is that possible? please elaborate.
It seems they may have fixed this a month later, if I read that correctly... but here is what it was doing:
