    Example of Reaper insanity:
    I had a melody in my head but didn't know the notes. So i pulled up Reatune and send the midi out to Synthmaster and played a vst synyh with my voice in real-time with a stock plugin.

      And what's also great, the Reaper RPP files are only text files. Super easily editable. If you use a plugin and that plugin crashes your work on load, you can very easily remove that plugin in notepad.

    I love watching "Why Reaper is the best DAW" videos again and again, always learning new stuff. This piece of software is simply amazing. I still see people working with cracked Cubase 5.1, this is the most idiotic thing you can do in this solar system.

    For 15+ years I used Samplitude, with Samplitude Pro X 3, as the latest iteration I used. I was always suspicious about Reaper, because I paid a ton of money for Sam, and always thought: never is a 60 bucks software gonna outrun a renown company's flagship. Boy, I was sooo wrong! I went to Reaper about two years ago, when I wanted surround audio, something Pro X is restricted to 5.1. After a good three weeks of sinking my teeth into Reaper, I regret every cent I spent on Samplitude for years and years of upgrades - this is the one DAW, the one to rule them all. Never been looking back. I went to Reaper literally overnight, and I ain't got enough thumps to give an appropriate amount of thumps ups it deserves.

    That's right! But, it's worth adding - a very simple and logical interface, a large selection of themes, automatic assignment of color and icons to a track by its name, customization of menus, buttons, context menus, hot keys for yourself, automatic control of any parameter of any plugin from changes in the original parameter of the plugin or envelope. And many, many more things...

    Yeah, I was like woah, this is hard wrap your head around at first and took me a good couple of months really get anywhere but bit by bit I've really got to grips with it now (1yr in) and what a powerful daw. Just about a dozen features I'd like for me but once you get that right theme, I've settled on FL Studio (Beta 4) and HeDa's Track Templates are brilliant and once you get things like those in place, customise it to how you like it, it's as fluent as anything. Once the dozen features I'm looking for have arrived (which I'm confident will in the next 6 months at the rate they release versions) it'll be THE best daw I reckon.

      @alexmcginness Are you going to whine on every single comment about how YOU couldn't get reaper set up. We get it you weren't smart enough to set it up in 8 hours blah blah. If you couldnt set it up then you have no useful input on how it is to work with reaper. I have literally seen complete noobies that wouldnt know a DAW from their own ass setup and be recording in under an hour with multiple input interfaces. So either watch some tutorials on how to get it done or please for the love of God quit whining.

    • @ceeph36
      @ceeph36 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ive used many different DAWs at one time or another from cubase to sonar to protools and I could figure out how to make all of them work. "JUST POINTING OUT" AS YOU ARE SO FOND OF SAYING, its a poor workman that blames the tool for his own lack of knowledge and skill.

    • @ceeph36
      @ceeph36 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @alexmcginness I am not attacking you. I really dont care if you use, like or even acknowledge Reaper exists. I just think it is funny you have to dog a program on multiple comments that you could never get to run. How do you know what it can do? you never got it running. I have used lots of DAWs not going to list them all and Reaper is the most customizable powerful non limiting one I have used. Usually if I can think it there is a way to do it in Reaper. Yes it definitely has a big learning curve when you get into scripts macros and custom actions and I wouldn't say it has the prettiest GUI. But the time you put in learning definitely pays off in the long run.

    • @ceeph36
      @ceeph36 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @alexmcginness Really? try putting audio midi and multiple takes in the same track in Cubase. Can"t? HHMM there is one of hundreds of things Reaper can do Cubase or any other daw I have used cant

    Reaper is ranked 1st while Logic Pro X is ranked 5th
    reaper has ONLY two cons, not samples, and not instruments, there are a lot of good free vstis in internet and free samples, no problem.
    reaper dont have 9 powerful features, it has 900 or more, there is no thing that reaper can't do, maybe live clip launching like ableton, but reaper has two plugins to do that,
    reaper is so powerful that needs a lot of studio, but there are hundreds of tutorials.
    reaper is one of the best piece of software out there

    Thank you so much for this video, although it could have easily been called 90 Most Powerful Features of the REAPER DAW and still not covered every advantage it has over other DAWs. I'm really confident that it will be the industry standard within the next 3 to 5 years. Producers and engineers stuck using other DAWs simply won't be able to keep up with those using REAPER. It cuts production time in half at least. There is just no comparison. And what's really amazing is that they add features regularly, but the last installer was actually a smaller download! Cockos knows how to write code. They should school every other software company on the planet. These other DAWs that I used to think were so amazing are just monstrously bloated and inefficient pieces of junk. They all have one or two cool things that are a little interesting. I think the drummers in Logic are a pretty revolutionary thing. Makes the horrific drum machine sound that is in 90% of the crap that passes for music these days sound almost like a real drummer played the song. But that's not really what a DAW is for IMO. That's what musicians are for. I'm just not impressed by people who rely on software to replace talent. That's not real music. REAPER is just unsurpassed as a DAW. I guess it will be the mechanism of natural selection in the industry. Those not flexible enough to adapt to the DAW that adapts itself to your needs, whatever they may be, are going to be left in the evolutionary dustbin of audio production. I love that I can turn it into a streamlined voice over machine in a few minutes, then switch back to the most wildly functional, rapid, and fully featured recording tool with a couple of mouse clicks. Then it can become perfectly laid out for mixing, and change to the optimal mastering layout just as fast. I watch people struggle with doing things like notation in one app, then fight to get it work in something lame like Audition to edit and mix. The time they waste to end up with an inferior project just because they don't want to take an hour to get up and running with REAPER is frustrating to watch. I guess they deserve the hell they are creating for themselves. Anyone who can't get REAPER working better than their previous DAW must have been dropped on their head too many times. It doesn't get much simpler to get started. And, yes, it's got a LOT to learn. It can do so much that you could spend a lifetime learning new ways to do things with it, but if you can't get the basics going pretty quick, you should just hang up your hat and become a drywall installer or a grave digger.

    Last tip is just insane, absolute deal breaker haha Thank you for this video. When I "sub" the tracks it creates another subsesh file in my folder. Any tips on how to organize those automatically? Also, is it possible to 'sub" selection of clips instead of tracks?

    • @protoolstoreaper8259
      @protoolstoreaper8259  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think of using subprojects as organized within a "main session." This main session works like sound forge would work in my workflow, so it normalizes, makes things mono, puts fades, renames, etc. But, you can rename your subprojects and the item will be renamed, so there are various ways to organize, i just don't in that way. It is possible to put clips into a subsession, but it is still based on tracks, so if clips are spread on multiple tracks, you'll have multiple subprojects. The best way is to just think of it as moving tracks into a subsession and not think of clips in that way. But yes, it's an amazing feature, I use it everyday and love it!!!

    • @rafthe2128
      @rafthe2128 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding your macro at 2:30 for splitting at cursor- Unless I'm missing something I think there is already a direct action for that without making a macro - called 'Item: Split item under mouse cursor'.

    • @JerContact
      @JerContact 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're totally right! That particular macro is useless, but just an example of what a macro could be. I actually have this as a script now, it splits just one item when ungrouped and splits multiple if grouped. But you are totally right, the crazy thing about reaper is you keep learning along the way, thanks for the catch!

  • @jacoboakvideos

    Can you have multiple timelines as well? This would be helpful for film scoring where sometimes tracks at two different tempos come up right against each other. Not sure if sub sessions can help with that.

    • @protoolstoreaper8259
      @protoolstoreaper8259  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A tip with regards to true collaboration with Reaper:
    MusiCollaboration - www.mucol.ch
    A couple of scripts allow from a "main-project" to generate instrument specific subprojects which can be shared over any of the available cloud-services (such as google-drive, OneDrive, iCloud or Dropbox). The subprojects can be used for recording or practicing independantly from all other project participants. The recordings made in all subprojects and the main-project can be synchronized using plugin-independant backtracks so that everyone involved has the latest work results available to them.

    What about Studio One 4

    • @Microtonal_Cats
      @Microtonal_Cats 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Studio One is OK, it's my second-favorite DAW after Reaper.
      But only the pro version of Studio One can use VSTs, and the pro version is much more expensive than Reaper.
      Anything that can't use VSTs is skipping a huge amount of (often free) functionality, fx, and instruments.
      Reaper 64-bit can even run 32-bit VSTs. That GREATLY expands your capacity, since there are so many (vintage) free VSTs synths that are 32-bit.

    I have a track where the intro starts at a different tempo to the main tune, in Sonar I had to create a different project and import it as a wave file, it was cumbersome. Is there a way to mix tempos in Reaper, that would be amazing but I don't think there is. Perhaps sub projects might work for that as long as my sub project can have a different tempo.

    • @software70DKR
      @software70DKR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes if you hover the mouse over insert you'll see an option for a tempo change! It's seriously as simple as that! Make sure to use the split tool on every track right at the point of tempo change so wavs don't get stretched wrong.

    Is there such thing as a Studio One 4 Professional user that switched over to Reaper with no regrets?

    • @MarsViolet
      @MarsViolet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Me. And I think Studio One is great. I actually started with Reaper, and then switched to Studio One for about a year, but went back to Reaper after Studio One 4 came out because it got a lot more CPU-hungry with v4. Reaper is about 4x more CPU-efficient than Studio One. If you only use native plug-ins or have lots of cores, it probably doesn't matter, but I use across all my tracks third-party plugins which model hardware, and they pretty much bring Studio One to its knees running at 48 kHz. In Reaper, they're no problem at all, even at 96 kHz. Reaper's main weakness is that it doesn't come with any instruments or audio sample libraries, so you need to bring your own, but I've found over time that I generally don't like the instruments and sample libraries which are bundled with DAWs anyway. They're impeccable-sounding, but also very vanilla and lacking in character. So I use third party stuff, and just buy the things I need as they come up. However, occasionally I'll hop back into Studio One to use one of its instruments, export it as a wav, and bring that back into Reaper. In that sense, Studio One has become, for me, just a big virtual instrument for Reaper. (On my Hackintosh volume, I also have Logic, so it too can, in a pinch, be employed as a virtual instrument for Reaper, but mostly it has the same problems as Studio One. It's nowhere near as CPU-efficient, and its bundled instruments and audio samples are uninspiring.)
      I did try out the most recent Studio One update because it has some CPU improvements for virtual instruments, but it has no improvements over v4 for general processing. Reaper still cleans the floor with it.

    If you want to get paid real money...you need Pro Tools though. Studios use PT. Almost everyone mainstream uses PT. Reaper is great but for Post Production, PT is far more powerful. Far more. Still, good video. I agree with you. I support Reaper fans. I just know that I need PT for the above reasons.

      If someone is that in demand, they can probably show up to work with Reaper on a thumb drive and the boss wouldn't say squat.
      Anyone that badass and in demand can probably work out of their home using any DAW you want.
      Also, the kind of studios that "only use ProTools" are well n the way out, partially because of Reaper.
      I'd argue that Pro Tools is less powerful, since it doesn't run VSTs. The best way to run VSTs in Pro Tools is by rewiring in with Reaper as your VST host for Pro Tools. lol.

    Hey there Pro Tools to Reaper.. Please when you're making instructional videos you have to say the things we can't see.. you keep showing me all these great things but not saying how you are doing them.. reverse is just one click.. fantastic.. but which one.. add effect to individual samples.. amazing.. but how.. you keep clicking things on your keyboard but we don't know what.. alls you have to do is type in the effect you want.. NO ... first you have to know how to open the window to type it in... Argh... !!! i'm so excited by all this stuff but now i have to go and look up something else to find out how to do it.. thanks.. i think.. ???

    and all this for 229 Euros for the commercial License with free updates forever. A good tool should be something you don't thank about as you use it; you are focused on what the tool is doing not how it is doing it. You are looking beyond the tool, as it were. Any software or hardware that does not conform to this prnciple is rubbish.

    Not impressed. Compared to Pro Tools, maybe, but compared to Logic - I can accomplish everything in Logic just as quickly. Nothing shown here is revolutionary.

      A big difference is that audio editing in Logic has a lasting affect on the audio files. Reaper audio editing is non-descructable. People need to understand how sophisticated a software needs to be in order to do that so seamlessly

    So you download reaper & spend hours recording with it, but wait! You've not paid for it yet, so no exporting out of the program for you, something I can do in Studio One's free editing suit! Tight bastards.

      They’re asking $60 for the full version. Arguably the best DAW on the market. I don’t think Reaper is the one being unreasonable here
