    There is a free vst called snapshot where you can take a picture of your hardware settings and import it to the vst so you have a reference right there on your track

    Five recommendations:
    1) Have you tried other Reaper themes? My favorite one is Default Commala 5 2016.
    2) When you render set the Resample Mode to Extreme. It consumes more CPU and it lasts longer but the resampling results in a more clean and "untouched" audio.
    3) What about setting a buss for everything but the vocals? Like "Instruments".
    4) Set all the plugins you use all the time on every track and bypass them, from the Reaper bypass button. If they're "deactivated" (how I like to call them from the Reaper bypass) they don't consume any CPU at all.
    5) Try Airwindows Ditherbox with the NJAD on 24 bits when mixing and 16 bits when mastering (unless the client asks for a 24 bits master) at the end of the mixbus chain and on the group buses (deactivated on the later ones unless you're gonna render them separately). Off course, this means that when rendering don't forget to deactivate Reaper's dither and noise shaping.
    Not so much of a workflow recommendation but this dither is just awesome.
    Btw, don't you have tracks prepared for importing references? Or is it that you don't use references?

    1. You can control send volume / pan ! But only with midi cc ("adjust track send...")
    2. You dont have to close the region render matrix and go to File:Render.... Click "Render..." on the upper right from your region render matrix and you are just right there ;)
    3. Did you try to build window screensets for your second screen? You can, for example, arrange all tools / windows that have something to do with rendering on the second screen and save them as screensets. Or a second screenset for analysis tools (For example I have all important analyzers in monitoring fx). Or a mixer in fullscreen. each with a keystroke available, so you can switch with keyboard shortcut or midi....
    4. Toolbars: For recurring tasks, a custom toolbar makes sense! Toolbars are so powerful! For my part I have a toolbar for editing tasks, mastering tasks, etc etc ... after the fun part of mastering I highlight all trackitems and just press 4 buttons (Set marker, convert to region, set region as master, render) in order, write the track names in the region manager, choose "$region" as filename and I'm done. 30 sec - 1 min maximum.

    Hey! I see you're getting your way around pretty fine! Some things you may or may not know: You can disable parent/master send by alt clicking (suppose it's option click on Mac) on the routing square before opening the routing menu so that you don't have to reach the button every time. There is also a sws action you can map that to and make a custom action (a.k.a. macro). Other than that you can drag the routing square to any track to make a send if you have zoomed out to see the tracks that you want. Another way would be to use the routing matrix. If you want something specific I may be able to help you out. Greetings from Halfweg!

    Great video. You can create a custom bar with shortcut icons to your most used features at the top. I have 'render' and 'open render queue' as shortcuts, as well as an option to bypass Monitoring FX. The Monitoring FX output is really useful for metering and if you are using an effect on your headphones (I use Waves NX). I really like you tip of using a separate channel as the master channel, so you can do quick A/B reference comparisons!

    You can make action buttons for adding fx or vsti in one click. You need SWS for this.
    Open Cycle Action Editor.
    Add Cycle Action
    Cycle Action Name - Custom: Add ReaEQ
    command CONSOLE x reaeq.
    Apply.
    Then Customise Toolbar, add new Button "Custom Add ReaEQ".

    Very helpful vid. Please do more vids on reaper as it is always nice to see what others are doing. One small correction at 1:53 your mixer window is actually set to Track Layout> Mixer Panel> ea - Strip.... What you were changing was the edit window; track panel to bd ---Small Full Meter, which is off screen. This could be confusing to new users like myself. Anyway, thanks for your efforts and wealth of info. Cheers.

    okay, regarding the routing window: If I got you right, you want a way to route a track by using short cuts? Instead of opening a window and set it there? If so, then all hints about the routing matrix are obsolete, as it is just another window (although a very handy one, indeed)...Hmm let me think about that.

    I like your template, and am starting to work on jobs more like your workflow. Any chance of you posting your template and customized arching actions files for your Patrons? Luckily, I use UAD instead of a console (I dare you to tell the the difference-video idea), so I can recall session settings easily, but I do find myself hitting DSP limits, it would be nice to have those archiving actions. I'm working on some of my own to share with the REAPER/White Sea Studio community, but they require a PDF guide to set up some nudge slots, and I'm waiting until my 501c3 charity paperwork goes through before I unleash them so I can put a "donate" link in them.

    Thanks for the contribution, tremendous, a question, you will understand that reaper has an audio engine more transparent than samplitude x4, I really have samplitude daw long ago and I thought that nothing equals samplitude but I acquired reaper recently and this surprised with the crarity of things, a simple static mix, It really sounds clearer and I know that reaper is 64 bits float and samplitude only 32 bits and even if you configure reaper as samplitude and reaper sampling itself it is perceived as clearer and I have no bad hearing, I would like to know what you think, if so, and I have been looking to know what kind of audio engine it has, because I think it is not normal if it is equated to magix. I would like to know your opinion if it is not annoying or takes time away from your work.

    Great video! But frankly, I wouldn't render out both sample rates from reaper for two reasons: rendering at 44.1kHz switches the whole rendering path to 44.1kHz. So all plugins will work at a lower sample rate, thereby risking more aliasing artefacts. Also: slow.
    I'd just use something like r8brain and batch process the folder with the exported files. Yes, it's an extra step outside of reaper, but on my machine (i7-2600k with 8GB RAM) a 4 minute song is converted in almost an instant, so no need to get a second coffee. It'll presumably sound better, too.
    Otherwise some great stuff in there!

    • @xaosnox
      @xaosnox 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great info. Thanks the tip. I've got an i5 with 8GB RAM, and rendering out an audiobook that needed massive repair work with iZotope and FF plugins in multiple layers all over the thing took over a day. That's not common, but it's good to know if I've got another massive repair project. Much appreciated.

    • @xaosnox
      @xaosnox 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, you didn't mention r8brain is only for Windoze. I think I know of maybe 2 professionals that use Windoze. Seems like it might run in Wine on the Mac, though. I'll give it a try. We like to complain about how bad Apple has become since Steve Jobs died and especially since they fired Scott Forstall, but a quick trip into doing audio or video in Windoze makes you grateful really fast. I'm glad REAPER is developing for Linux now. I hope they either create a plugin wrapper for the third party plugins or companies like iZotope and Fab Filter start developing for Linux. Pretty soon the Mac is going to be as bad as Windoze for professionals, and Linux will be the only viable option for a professional workflow. Sad.

    • @xaosnox
      @xaosnox 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @lordgeyik
      @lordgeyik 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is partially incorrect; you can set Reaper to handle the render process in project sample rate (ie. 192khz) and then convert 44.1 in render options. So no need to downgrade the whole render signal flow.

    I looks like a very configurable DAW, but the UX isn't great. I like the basic look of the channel swim lanes, but the menu-ing and dialog layouts have all the elegance of a 747 cockpit...way too distracting. To me it looks like they hired a designer just to work on the sound clip presentation and then let a developer have free-reign on the rest of the UI. Since I create music, I think this workflow would get in my way.

      Which ones exactly they all have a different sound. This analogue in digital love affair is driving me nuts. Just give us multiple of plugins that answer a single problem and make it easy to listen through the previews. That would be 100% better then trying to mix to album, tape and CD when we know that digital music sounded horrible for the first 20 years of CD, because it took a long time to figure out the mastering.

    • @TonyPelosi-music
      @TonyPelosi-music 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used Harrison's Mixbus for years along with Reaper.A lot of people is still doing that. I can say that no matter what you put in, the final mix sounds more glued and good sounding (to my taste). They're a serious company and the tech support is awesome. But recently , I gave up using it because its workflow is a hassle, and I gave up to spend lots of times&procedures in order to learn their way of managing things. There's a video White Sea ( I don't know his name) says he thinks of PTools as an ex-girlfriend that when you met occasionally, you still have ''feelings'' - I feel the same with MBus, but now I'm in Reaper for sure... and happier

The instrument projects can be used for recording or practicing independently from all other participants. The recordings made in all instrument projects and also the main-project can be synchronized using plugin-independent backtracks so that everyone involved has the latest work results available to them.

    You do understand the native sample rate clocking on any smart phone is 48Khz right? Don't believe me? Record a video and look at the audio info. Why anyone does 44.1khz anymore is beyond me. No one listens to CD's anymore (16 Bit audio file).

    I want to love Reaper so much, but I hate the looks of it. I'm just that shallow 😞. Does it matter you say? Well.. I spend more time looking at my DAW than my girlfriend.

    I want to love Reaper. Have installed it a dozen times. But i'm too shallow. I can't get over its horrible gui and it feels like there's settings/options everywhere. Looks like it was made using Java Swing.

    You should make screenshots as well instead of taking pictures with your mobile. Way more practical.

    I can't stand Reaper. Everything is hidden in a setting. It's ridiculous. More time searching menus than working.
