Genuinely heart breaking to think that Marc, in that moment, switched to the brave Steven, who knows no fear because danger is near. And the danger being his own mother. I don't think Steven dealt with the abuse as his "whole point" was to have the normal life. It makes more sense for Jake or marc to have lived it because adult Steven didn't remember that and wanted to stay and see what she did

@@RandomBlair I think Marc became Stephen before and after horrible events with his family, so that he’s not scared before and so he can not remember it after
Because Steven has memories of events he was in and no memory of ones he wasn’t in (like being beaten or being a soldier), so when he’s Stephen he’s pretending/thinking that everything’s going to be fine and that nothing horrible just happened
Then I assume Marc created Jake when he was a soldier to deal with doing horrible things to people to keep Marc from knowing

@@snrz150 I'd say Steven was created to be blissfully ignorant, and therefore he can be "brave". So when he is afraid while his Mom is pounding on the door, he transitions into Steven, so he doesn't feel that fear, then once his Mom breaks in Jake comes out, to take the hurt and shield Steven's innocence. Once the beating is over, Steven probably comes back again, so rather than Marc having to lay there in pain thinking about how his Mother just beat him, he can just be Steven and nothing actually happened.
Steven is a way for him to escape either the fear of, or the traumatic after effects of, the beatings by his Mom, by become someone who it just doesn't happen to, Steven, who has a mother that loves and cherishes him, and would never do that.

My theory is that when Marc got abused by his mother, he created both Steven and Jake. Steven is Marc's Alter that loving his mom, Jake is Marc's Alter that wanting to rebel, to fight back or even to kill the mother. However, Marc actually loved his mother and felt guilty to her more than hating her, showing in 12:00, when his mother died, Marc "physically" created Steven and Jake was "Lockley" :))) Jake is real but just not a complete alter like Steven.

I was a bit worried they would take some dumbed down, kid friendlier and “MCU” route like “Steven blipped into the wrong body” or “alternate universe versions of him combined after the events in Loki” or something like that. The song that comes out at the end when Steven dies is a Christian song in Spanish called "Más allá del Sol" It alludes to the Christian belief in an eternal life of peace after death, something that fits perfectly with this series knowing that the Egyptians believed in a life after death even long before the Christians. It shows how well they studied the Egyptian culture and religion to make this series. I can bet that it was Oscar Isaac himself who recomended the song knowing that he comes from a Christian family.

Probably worth pointing out that when Steven falls overboard and starts to turn into stone, he’s in the same position as Crawley, the performer he keeps talking to in the first episode, whose “job” is also to stay as still as possible. What I find equally interesting is that he turns to stone just before he's "denied" entrance to the Field of Reeds, echoing the words of the little girl from episode 1 when she says "Did it suck when you got rejected from the Field of Reeds?" It's like everything came back full circle in this episode.

Absolutely loved Marvel delving into DID, and this show hit so hard on it. This is exactly what happens; integration and healing and finally becoming one, but Jake seems to be the hidden alter in the system that both don't know about, hence why the scales balanced even tho there is another. We are just supposed to see glimpses of Jake (aka bloodied up nose one) to know he is in there somewhere. People with DID have been known to have hidden subsystems within their system with even more alters inside. I knew Steven was the coping alter, there were too many gaps in his memories and you can clearly hear it when he speaks to the golden guy about blackouts and why he directly never spoke to his mom, I had a feeling she was gonna be a big factor in it, it seemed irrelevant but when Layla said you speaking to her again, I knew something was off.

I think this episode was the best and the most emotional I’ve gotten. The way you understood Steve and Marc was at a level of how we think internally. All of us go through a place in ourselves to find that numbing pain. When we’re alone, all we can do is make a friend out of ourselves. And once you saw yourself letting go of a part of you. When Steve turned into stone… it was basically Marc watching himself perish. It’s very ironic how Steve got thrown in the sand instead of Marc. You would expect the narrator to place Steve at that place where the tall grass were and where the sun was setting. But Marc got to feel at peace. It’s like they switched places for a brief second. Sometimes you gotta let that part of you that’s hurting also be at peace.

Just when I thought I couldn’t come to love and care for a character as much as I did for Wanda in Wandavision, now I love Marc Spector AND Steven Grant just as much. I did not expect Moon Knight to make me cry as hard as episode 8 of Wandavision, but here I am, with a eyes red and raw from wiping tears away.
It’s easy to dismiss Steven as just a “stress ball” but no, he is as much of a person now as Marc. And I hope somehow he comes back.
Also Oscar Issac had better be nominated for best actor at the Emmy’s!!

WandaVision hit me hard when I watched it partially because of dealing with grief in my own life at the time. It was a great show regardless, but my personal experiences might have made it resonate more with me. IDK. I don’t have experiences similar to Marc and Steven, but this episode was so well done I still found myself getting very emotional. Moon Knight is on track to become my favorite Marvel show.

If you've watched his movies like Clash (which is my favourite) and Amira, you know he won't shy away from subject matters that is not easy to watch or deemed controversial by mainstream.

The way this series has handled mental illness and disassociative disorders and coping mechanisms is absolutely phenomenal. I have schizoaffective disorder, and it's easy to show those types of coping mechanisms in the wrong way. This episode was beautiful and tragic from start to finish.
I didn't notice the only Marc in the mirrors when I watched this - I was too busy absolutely admiring how amazingly good the visuals and reflection of Taweret in the mirror looked to pay attention lol. There are varying forms of DID. I experienced trauma close to like what was displayed in this episode but it was mainly for punishments and by my Dad. I have a lower tier of DID where I dissociate when I feel like I am in a situation I can’t handle. For me it’s not like a separate personality as much as it a cloak of armor that will protect me in my most vulnerable moments. I cant explain it but look into DID cause not all cases are as severe as the one shown in Moon Knight. Just saying

This was an amazing episode and such a dark yet important subject matter to tackle in more of a mainstream way. One of the first things that you learn studying psychology is how often pathologies are rooted in the family and this hits that nail on the head perfectly. It felt thematically very similar to the video game, "Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice", which if you're not familiar - is about someone with severe mental illness that slowly reveals a backstory of horrific child abuse. Both Ethan Hawke and especially Oscar Isaac were simply phenomenal in this, it is not easy to portray this sort of subject matter so authentically.

Man, I think the episode's moment of self-actualization that it wasn't his fault should've been longer, it didn't give Marc's realization any space to sink in, only to be acknowledged until they had to switch of the next scene. I felt that moment and I just got snapped back to the plot suddenly and I didn't even have time to really process it or to say better, see Marc process that and having it sink in. I'm not saying it doesn't hit, but I'd want to see marc swallow that pill, THEN go to the plot. Idk if I'm the only one that feels like that tho

I feel like it's Marvels way of connecting the shows with each other, without actually connecting the plots or the characters. While watching moonknight, you get so invested in this particular part of the world, it's so easy to forget you're still in the mcu.
