Emmy level performance from Oscar Isaac. The transition between identities, and the depiction of how DID comes about is phenomenal. As well as working across from ‘himself’ is nearly flawless in execution.
Really hope he’s not overlooked for awards, because I feel Wandavision was only considered because the topic of TV history was evaluated, which lead to the academies taking it seriously.

Apparently, his brother played the "body extra" in scenes when they were both on screen. I wonder how many takes they took when the heavy trauma came in. Talking about his "little brother" dying. 😢

No, I don't think WandaVision was just nominated for Emmys just because its sitcom related but it is because of Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany's character. They showcase their range on how phenomenal actors they are.
Just like Oscar Isaac, he portrayed a character with a DID and Elizabeth Olsen portrayed a character who's mentally-ill and suffers with her grief. I just think this two has character parallels which makes WandaVision and Moon Knight the best shows on Disney+ (not including the Marvel Netflix shows).

      @@selle7031 What is this response?
I know their great performances, my point is that the academy only acknowledged it because it made the old white men remember their childhood of watching TV due to the premise. They would have overlooked the great work done by all the performers because “well it’s Marvel”, if not for it leaning into their hubris.
Which is why I’m worried for Moonknight, as it hasn’t got anything for the ‘traditional’ voting member.

    • @selle7031
      @selle7031 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@J_Tevo I do think Moon Knight will have several nominations not just because of "old white men being reminiscent of their favourite sitcoms/TV shows" but because of representing a psychological disorder that the hollywood doesn't seem to often showcase through their movies and shows.

I think he created steven to cope with his trauma and he created Jake to cope with is anger and guilt towards his mother. Marc is the medium between the ultra-passive Steven and ultra-aggressive Jake. With Steven in the Duat, and Marc in the field of reeds I think Jake will be the one who goes through the gates of Osiris. IDK where this will end or how/if it'll fit into the greater MCU but I here for the full ride

I feel like if we don't get the third personality then it will be alright. The show has been doing great without needing to see the third personality. We at least KNOW he exists (unlike MEPHISTO) and plus they literally show him in this episode anyway he was the first one we saw with Dr. Harrow with the bloody nose. This was the best episode and best performance from Oscar hands down which makes me wonder what's going to happen in the final episode. I think the final alter is going to explain how Marc killed his mother out of self defence, and I think the fact that he picked up that weapon was a dead giveaway. I'd be able to identify that instinct anywhere. This is something that a child or person develops when they wake up every day to physical attacks, whether by a parent or some other force. In this case, we can be certain it's his mother. There's even further evidence for this in the scene where she starts beating him with a belt but Marc takes Steven out of the room before he can see anything, and he hears it. They did not 'make' a character. This is based off the comics. Sure, Steven Grant is different, but the way they're approaching it is pretty well informed by the comics nonetheless.
The trauma, the guilt, the hints at religious angst, the DID disorientation, the struggles with being manipulated, all these concepts were introduced to the character by comics in some manner creators and they should be given credit for it too

@@rickrivers2021 I've read a little bit of the comic books. It's to the life and depth of the character is that I'm refering, not so much the newness of an entity. OI et al have bought a fullness of being that is remarkable, breathing life into the otherwise (to me) clay figurine that is the comic book presentation. I mean no offense to the writers or illustrators of the comic books, recognizing, in fact, there is no Moon Knight without them. But I never was so emotionally or psychologically invested into the various alters of Marc Spectre without the honor of witnessing the MCU's interpretation and presentation of him.

    • @rickrivers2021
      @rickrivers2021 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@u64770 Yeah, comic books build, and the writers introduce and add depth to past ones. So on the one hand, a single creative team may do less then in the movie (though not necessarily). But on the other hand, the character almost always ends up being more deep and nuanced overall, because of all the time, story, and creative minds contributing. Moon Knight is a very nuanced and complex character in the comics, unusually so. But if you've only read a little bit, this can be hard to see.

    • @u64770

@@rickrivers2021 Robert Kirkman, you probably well know, made the Walking Dead. I read the first comic after watching the show, and realized that without the actors and writers and directors of it I would have disregarded the amazing world and storylines he created. The comics didn't do much for me, but that could just be me not adequately appreciating the medium or me not looking past whatever it was that turned me off. Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yeun, Danai Guerera and all the other cast; Greg Nicotero, Angela Kang, and all the other producers and directors; all the crew members, etc. made a world on tv that made me highly respect Kirkman's work. I feel like this with Moon Knight. Before, the tv show, Robert Kirkman would have just been some guy with a cool job to me. Now I want to be among the many to show him my means of surviving a zombie apocalypse.
So I know we've talked back and forth and apologize if I still am too obtuse to get the point you are highlighting. The comic book writers and artists deserve high praise for creating the worlds and storylines I best connect to when others use the primary material and convert it to a audiovisual medium that I can more easily digest.

Just when I thought I couldn’t come to love and care for a character as much as I did for Wanda in Wandavision! I did not expect Moon Knight to make me cry as hard as episode 8 of Wandavision, but here I am, with a eyes red and raw from wiping tears away. It’s easy to dismiss Steven as just a “stress ball” but no, he is as much of a person now as Marc.
Also if Oscar Issac had better be nominated for best actor at the Emmy’s. This is honestly the best performance of his life.

Marc and Steven reconciled their pain. But Marc & Jake haven't reconciled their rage/anger. So, there's room to introduce Jake in a way that will make sense to the story. I just don't know how they can with one episode left.
I haven't read the comics but I've heard that the alters come back.

It’s so interesting that early on we perceive Marc as the stronger of the two because he can physically protect both of them and summon the powers of Moon Knight. Peeling back more of Marc’s mind we realize Steven actually protects Marc even more so ( and is possibly even the strongest of the two) with traumas and life hurdles he can’t deal with. Their reliance on each other is nicely written.

This episode was just gold, even narratively speaking - it allowed us to understand Marc's character better and it filled a lot of gaps in Steven's life. It's like Steven is a part of his psyche that Marc has been trying to protect since childhood. It's also worth noting how Marc always gets burdened with guilt - over his brother and Layla's father.

Nah cuz this episode (and especially Oscar's acting) had me in SHAMBLES. I was crying so much... He better get an Emmy for this!
But besides, I really enjoy how this episode was structured. As a fan of Egyptian mythology I wasn't confused about anything on that part which honestly really helped out. I'm honestly so happy we're getting this in a marvel show!
I also loved the deep dive into Mark's DID. It's quite different for everyone and Steven has been revealed to be the spiritual protector, he fronts when Mark is in extreme emotional stress. No wonder he doesn't remember any trauma at all. In this show they take the route of Mark being rather united with his alters. They ARE separate people but don't have a full life (like Steven only living a lie). When he lost Steven his scales balanced because he finally truly accepted him and the trauma he suppressed.

The "uncovering memories through the door" trope was done by both WandaVision and Moon Knight. The difference being Wanda's memories were pretty straightforward and hence had fairly straight path to the day the bomb dropped, while Marc's memories are just borderline insanity and basically a labyrinth of different traumatic experiences.
Same technique but adapted to different characters masterfully.

Best way to see this is that, Marc used Steven as his shield. One will "remember" his mom's beatings, the other will make him "forget". It's how the id of the mind works when forced to play its hand in response to such an extreme moment.
Basically, Steven is the id, marc would be either the ego or superego, if we go by Sgmund Freud's theories about how the mind works. :D

Steven created his own hero, likely named Jake. Jake is the one who saved Steven in the Alps and Cairo. Jake is the one who set up Steven's date and replaced Gus. Steven was created to protect Marc, to keep a safe place for him. Steven had to be protected at all costs, as we saw Marc try in this episode. When Marc isn't there to protect Steven, Steven conjured up his own persona, and I think we saw him on the boat protecting Marc.
Next week is going to be wild. Can't wait!
This is the MCU's best TV series, right here! Emmys for everyone!
    Edit:
22:43 Khonshu is a jerk, no doubt. But he's not a cold blooded killer. I think the bones we saw in a flashback were there just to foreshadow. Khonshu wanted an avatar and used Marc's final moments to his advantage, that's what I got out of that scene. Khonshu got tired of sitting in his temple doing nothing. With Arthur gone and him banished, he was itching to get back into the game, and he was going to do whatever it took to do that. Khonshu's a chief manipulator, sure, but he did what he did to stop Ammit, and he sees humans as servants, at least up until Marc/Steven. Khonshu's final moments make me think he realized that he misjudged humans and hoped that Marc would give him another chance, which is why I think he asked Steven to tell Marc to find his tomb.

Regarding Steven's actual fate, I want to point out of the entertaining and fascinating allegorical phantasmagoric principles established in this episode, that the Anubis scales BALANCED after overboard Steven began to silicify THOUGH his heart remained on the scale Marc's. Possibly signifying that disparate removed Steven fulfilled his original purpose for Marc incepting him and still exists but advanced to his new role of being the accepted and welcome part of Marc of his "inner brother."

I do not believe that actually Arthur Harrow as the Psychiatrist. I believe that’s Marc trying to cope with him being forced to relive his traumas and so created an inner world. “Inner worlds” is an aspect of DID where individuals will create worlds in their mind that has many features that mirror real life memories. Dr Harrow bringing up the concept of inner worlds also makes me feel like this is the case.

Of course I need to point out where I don’t agree… The part of Marc breaking down at his mums funeral and in then suddenly switching was brilliant - because that was the whole point of his DID. Steven were created as a coping mechanism in exactly those kind of situations, so it really pointedly showed how it worked. And that switch was what broke me - the blame, the shouting, the agony of Marc shown was heart breaking, but the switch just showed HOW terrible it was and how much Marc couldn’t deal with it.

23:40 - Random side story but about "young versions casting". The CW show Supergirl cast teenage versions of Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh.
When I saw them for the first time, I was utterly floored. Very similar faces and pinpoint accurate mannerism.
At first, I almost wondered for a (long) moment if the young Kara Danvers was actually Melissa with make-up and specific CGI.
