    Hello Mark, always great to see a video of yours pop up. I’m pleased there’s no major issues. I try not to panic and i just enjoy the car. Most importantly you can still drive it and enjoy it on a daily basis. 🙂

    Another very interesting Video, Mark. I have to say your videos have very much swayed me from potentially purchasing an Audi RS3, to one of these! The Focus RS just looks like a whole load of fun to drive, and as long as the Engine has been either recalled or is the newer engine, all should be fine. Cheers and keep up the good work!

    I understand how you feel, especialy given the history. I get paranoid with every rattle or squeak i hear. It might be good however not to make everybody else freak out as well and just keep some info to yourself untill you figure out if its only in your head or not.

    I feel your pain about paranoia with this car. My car had a rough idle post head gasket recall. I brought it to two dealers and they both wouldn’t even run test because they said it was “normal” well I finally brought it to a third dealer who actually ran tests. They discovered my head was warped and was leaking oil into the cylinders causing warping and scoring. How did this happen? I don’t know. I’m hoping for one of three options: 1. The head was warped before the recall and just wasn’t seen or tested. 2. The recall wasn’t done properly or 3. The dealer I brought the car from (I bought it used with 175 miles on it) knew it was damage and yet wanted to just make a quick sale so they just replaced the gasket. Either way I’m just hoping this isn’t a sign of what the future holds. I am currently getting a whole new unmolested engine that I hope I will not have problems with.

    Good News. I was feeling paranoid too. After watching your last vlog, I took my beer out to the garage and looked at my own head gasket! All was fine. But I did look at my coolant header tank and think 'Is that a little lower than when I last looked?' 😂 You're right about the paranoia. All worth it though.

    Really happy for you mate.Owning an RS ford is something iv,e wanted from the age 15, I am now 47 and still havnt been able to own one.One day I will own one and can t wait for the paranoid feelings your getting. To me it's just part of the excitement a pure bred rally machine with oodles of history behind the name brings to the owner.I mean I'd be paranoid of spinning the fxxker off the road getting a scratch on the paint getting it robbed the engine blowing up I could go on and on but you get my meaning.with so much love for something we automatically become a nervous wreck about it's wellbeing. Keep up the good vids mate I'm living my dream through people like you at the moment.

    Hi Mark, glad there is nothing serious wrong with your car, I have mine booked in for next week I have an intermittent idle issue, I had a similar issue with my MK7 ST, mechanic think it is a simple fix. Like someone else said can't see Ford going out of their way to recall all of the RS models and all of that expense for the fix not doing the job, as for everyone praising Germanic makes I have seen loads of videos with problems with the DSG gearboxes I know someone at work who had less than 10,000 miles on his Golf and the gearbox went also have engines that drink oil I could go on. If was going for another make it would either be a KIA or a Toyota/ Honda.

    This is the problem with dyno'ing frequently....it can find something which maybe nothing. Maybe it was the fuel, maybe it was the weather, maybe the dyno had a bad day, or maybe something is wrong......a lot of maybe's! - enjoy the car, only worry when you actually feel something is wrong with how it drives :)

    My focus RS Mk3 is also experiencing problems with about 3k miles after head gasket replacement. I'm noticing a lack of power/boost since getting it back from its 2nd xmission replacement. Now when I switch from normal mode to sport, I don't feel that power surge difference. There doesn't seem to be much diff in engine performance between normal and sport mode. Ford dealership has had my car for two weeks now with no updates.

  • @moonunitdaily1445
    @moonunitdaily1445 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Man I was hoping you had news on the power loss. It's not a dyno error or weather. Mine also feels fine but there is a loss in power above 5000 rpm. Something is wrong. I hope you have another dyno run when the temps are about the same as your 347 run.

  • @aor3200

    In my opinion it would be good idea to ask from ford what is reference boost pressure when you floor it (maximum boost psi). Then you can look livedata from obd and see what is reading from there. Do they match.
    40 hp down from power, it is quite lot.

    I can see the cause for some alarm when anything goes wrong with this car but I really think it’s more so because you were one of the unlucky ones who actually blew their motors. I drive an 18 plate LE and it’s been perfect 👌 I would continue to enjoy the car as you have been and deal with issues if they arise. Also I’m not sure how long you plan on keeping the car but you can consider buying an extended warranty before your factory warranty expires.

  • @Boradumir
    @Boradumir 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    One point I saw in the first video, the ventilation on the dyno isn't very good. It's a huge prop but the biggest part of the air will be blown over the hood and not downwards to the engine and intercooler.
    So on a warm day the electronic could cut the power off to save the engine.
    Do you have old acceleration times? maybe it could be a good thing to compare that.

  • @moc1man
    @moc1man 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really think the second Dyno run was impacted by factors that weren't present during the first time. You mentioned the weather was different. That will affect how much heat is soaked in from your drive there while the car is waiting it's turn. Also, what drive modes was the car in on the dunno?

    Having watched your vids and felt for your woes, I have to say I’m 100% sure you don’t have a new engine. New head gasket definitely but you wouldn’t have the same original engine number with a replacement engine, guaranteed. The number can’t be stamped into a blank unnumbered block at the dealership, it’s done by a dedicated machine at the factory. I think you might have been lied to by the Ford dealership here. Duplicate engine blocks with the same number very dodgy business for a multinational company.
    Quote from RAC website: Having a separate engine number means that if the engine blows up and needs to be replaced, it can be done so without the car needing to be scrapped. The car will simply be assigned a new engine number, alongside the existing chassis number.

  • @rogerbarrett9920
    @rogerbarrett9920 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mark- Apart from the headgasket/coolant loss problems that these latest RS engines suffer from, I think the "open deck" design of the cylinder block, where the top of the cylinder liners are not supported is always going to be a problem with these engines, especially if modding the motor starts to up the BHP. The original design of this engine is I believe shared with Mazda, who used it on their 3 MPS3 (Speed3 in the States)- But the engine block on that is of a closed deck design, which is much more robust and less prone to failures of this sort. Ford must be aware of this. I reckon in the end they will have to re-design that part of the motor to restore reliability.

    @tonygarces1862 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mark, have your car datalogged. Unfortunately, the dealerships don't do this effort and your car will show up with no faults. I had a scenario with a leaking diverter valve causing me to loose a bit of boost hence power. I also had an issue with water that got into my map sensor plug at one stage corroding the pins and causing a power loss. Datalogging can be done at most tuners that have software to do so. On my Golf, they would use VCDS. I have bought a cable and software to use with my car which I can datalog myself for instances like this. I am not sure what software and cable one can use with Ford though. But what's great is you can log on a 4th gear pull from 2000 rpm till redline under WOT and see if the cylinders are retarding timing, how much boost is being requested and how much it is making to redline, how much fuel is being requested and how much fuel is being pushed. This info will really help you troubleshoot issues on your car that most dealerships just don't do.

  • @DunkyThicc
    @DunkyThicc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could have had a bit of bad gas as well. The Stock intercooler Piping is really trash on the car. Lots of bits that expand under boost and cause boost surges. Not going to knock it though for the amount of power it has.
    Update on the vibration I was getting after head gasket replacement.
    They did an alignment and reset the engine mounts, also swapped two bolts near the sub-frame that they said got swapped during the recall. They put them in the wrong spots. One was just a bit longer than the other that made contact with the frame and caused vibration. Easy error as they look identical. Vibration is gone, runs like a beast.

  • @chesterm1306

    sounds like you got a really tiny leak in one of the hoses, diagnostic scanners arent enough to find a leak the size of a pinhole. you need to pressurize the intake system / hook it up to a smoke machine and find out that way. You can also try spraying some soapy water on the vacc lines and intercooler piping and check for bubbles when the car is idling - cheap and easy way to find leaks, but not guaranteed.

    You said you lost power at 5.000 RPM on your last video🤔 That dyno also recorded 309bhp! That’s a fact not paranoia mate.

    • @Bobbrians
      @Bobbrians 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The dyno read 309 wheel horsepower, the measured power at the wheels will always be less than the factory rating because the factory measures power at the crankshaft. A 350hp factory rating and 309hp dyno rating are perfectly normal, the transmission and differentials of the vehicle will lose some power to friction and radiate as heat.
      The power drop off after 5000rpm is perfectly normal for a stock tuned 2.3 ecoboost, the timing retards and the fuel mixture goes extremely rich in order to keep the catalytic converter protected from heat damage, this also extends the lifespan of the spark plugs, it's all part of an engine tuning strategy designed to make the engine components last the course of the warranty period, an aggressively tuned car will burn up its catalytic converter much faster and need new spark plugs much more often.

    • @blackflagpirate3444
      @blackflagpirate3444 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @royalstevep68
      @royalstevep68 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      309 at wheels sounds about right with 350 at the flywheel as you lose up 20% in the transmission etc. Having said that most rs3 8v cars are registering over 400 at the wheels!

    • @Bobbrians
      @Bobbrians 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The real question is where did it come from? I think the dyno calibration was off that day because the car should not be making that much power on the stock tune.

    There are environmental factors that will impact boost such as temperature and atmospheric pressure, the former of which im sure would be different across all of your dyno runs. There is also the possibility of a boost leak - and I've actually seen a friends RS actually suffer this due to loose intake and intercooler piping out of the Ford factory.
    Regardless, a dyno is simply a tuning tool and CAN NOT be used for accurate comparisons across multiple dyno results.
    As a side note - I feel like the British practice of compensating dyno results back to "bhp" rather than leaving numbers at "wheel horsepower" makes differences across dyno results even more noticeable.
    Calm down, have a cup of tea. Your car isn't about to blow another engine :-)

    Serious question: Is it worth owning a car you constantly have worry about? This paranoia would kill me.
    There is a 1.5 Ecoboost in the family (glad I don't have to drive that shit). So far it had problems with:
    1. Inconsistent throttle. Sometimes you just look at it and the revs go above 2000 making it damn near impossible to get the thing moving without jerking, other times you floor it and NOTHING happens. Made a few graphs using OBD live data, time matched to a video of my foot on the accelerator. I press x amount of throttle and keep it there and the live data shows 20-40-80-15-20% or something along those lines. And I'm wondering why I can't drive the damn thing.
    2. Idle. Sometimes you push the clutch in and it goes way down, picks back up again and it's usually fine after that. Except when it's uneven and it's shaking the entire car by something I believe to be a misfire. No codes though.
    3. Stutters. Definitely not a misfire, it's like a bad throttle position sensor (again?). You are creeping along in traffic, apply 5% throttle and it doesn't accelerate normally. This happens at anywhere from idle to 1500 RPM.
    4. The damn thing just isn't built properly. The throttle body squeaks when I apply throttle. The rear left door isn't set up properly and it destroyed the rubber seal by squeezing it and pulling on it every time I close the door. You have to slam the boot with 2 hands because it doesn't close. There is a piece of dirt or something under the paint. Gonna start rusting soon and that's gonna be a whole new headache for Ford to fix. The whole damn interior rattles, squeaks, the rear door panels have half an inch of movement like they aren't even held on by anything. And the rear right seatbelt tensioner... It makes clicking noises. Above 50 mph it's constantly clicking regardless of how smooth or terrible the road surface is.
    They had to replace the cabin air filter a month after the first oil change. It wasn't even dirty, it just didn't allow any air through. No heating, no AC. WTF? Oh and no warranty coverage on that.
    And the steering wheel isn't straight. From 0 miles it's been off. Suspension is adjusted properly, it tracks straight, just the steering wheel is off.
    And this is on a car that is 2 years old and has done 30k miles. I wish this was in the US, because this is why the lemon law exists.
    Total warranty work in 2 years comes to around 1500 pounds. Gonna sell it a year before the warranty expires and hope some idiot will buy it.

      Are there any "interesting" cars that don't instil paranoia? From what I can see on forums like Pistonheads, whether it is a Lotus, Aston Martin, Mercedes / AMG, Porsche, Audi RS, Lamborghini or (especially) a Ferrari, it is just part of ownership that you are wondering how big the next bill will be. In this instance, the paranoia was induced not by the car, but by the dynamometer (my suspicion is an interaction between the dyno, damp rollers and the 4WD system moving power around - hence the wavy torque line). Had Mark not done a dyno run, there wouldn't have been any problem. On the other hand, the Ecoboost in your family sounds like it should have been flat out rejected not fit for purpose (yes, we have consumer law here too, but only if people actually use it) why on earth did they accept it?

      @ast5515 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Zadster It didn't have these problems when it was new. It only had the dirt under the paint but it's a small and hidden area that wasn't noticed.
      Everything else came later. The throttle issues at around 5k miles, the weird behavior when creeping a bit later. The rattles started a lot faster but they only became annoying around 15k. The low idle issue cannot be reproduced sadly and they say the uneven idle is fine. I believe it's a faulty injector but whatever.

    Just curious but: If buying a used Focus RS, does every single 2016-2017 Focus RS eventually need to have the head gasket's replaced? I ask because when I pull the CARFAX reports on used Focus RS for sale, very few of them, if any, actually say that the head gaskets have been replaced. So would I be spending 35k for a car that will eventually blow a head gasket?

    You’re basing your thoughts now without any appropriate testing..... apart from the fact that you’ve said your boost readings are lower than they were before.
    IMO you need to log boost properly and compare that to what it should be.
    A ford dealer will struggle to do appropriate diagnostics, as they will only do what their service system tells them to. OBD diagnostics will only go so far, especially when being undertaken by an individual who isn’t really a specialist.
    Take it to a specialist with a dyno and get it fully checked out.
    I hope you get it all sorted.

    If Ford don't find a Boost leak, I would consider taking it to your local "Turbo engine specialist" as they are always the best for finding boost leaks... they know the tricks of the trade... even if it is for your own sanity only. The Ford guys as good as they may be, would likely just tighten clamps where possible and could miss tiny little cracks and damage.
    POWER: The "Dyno" that is firmly planted in the buttocks of all us "car guys (and girls)"... sometimes tells us that our cars have lost power, and a mere suggestion it has, magnifies that feeling. Humidity (relative) absolutely 100% have a big effect on the cars power number, so will the state of the fuel in your tank and a few other lesser things, that difference was rather high but it simply could have been that the original was way over what your car actually produces and last time was way under. Somewhere in the middle could be the number.
    To a certain extent Dyno's (... and please try to stop calling it a "rolling road"... LoL...)... should be used to improve the performance during a single session... not comparing peak numbers between sessions. For mine, if the power loss was that high, you surely would have noticed it earlier...?
    By the way... had any of the mysterious VEER STEERING yet...LoL...

    I’m glad it’s Ok on the HG front, but What about the back-to-back video comparisons that you did?! Clearly the car isn’t ‘boosting’ as it was before! You said yourself that the car isn’t as it was over 5k 🙄. And people aren’t pouring scorn out of jealousy (etc) - I currently have a 2017 Audi RS3 hatch, as well as various bikes and a rattly old Series One RS turbo - we’re just amused that you lot have bought Ford’s BS about what is obviously a very flawed engine design. Look what’s happening elsewhere in the ecoboost (or ecoboom) engine range right now....
