When I record the record still uses the internal storage , if anybody knows why could you please let me know .

This helped a lot along with another video. If anyone else can’t find Developer Options there is a way to get those back. Under Device, and selecting Your TV seven times in a row. If someone already shared that, sorry! Took me ages to find a fix.

This video helped me a lot thank you so much! I will say when I first went to my fire tv in settings developer wasn’t an option. I then learned if you click about and then click the name of your device 7x that option will appear. I cannot believe Amazon makes it this difficult. Also I don’t understand why they won’t allow us to remove their apps but this video is absolutely amazing and I’m just thrilled it worked!!

Just a couple things to keep in mind here:
1. Any app updates for apps you're not supposed to put on a USB drive will fail with "not enough space." You need to move it back to internal storage, update, then go through all this again to put it back, then set the app up all over again.
2. Apps running from the USB drive are much slower and prone to crashing (this is true even for apps that officially support being moved to USB).
But thank you for this very useful tip, my 4gb Fire TV filled up pretty much immediately, even with everything moved to USB that I could I still only have not even 2gb free

@Adan M I read somewhere that Amazon has in the past recommended a USB 3.0 drive with 128gb or less of storage, which coincidentally is exactly what I bought to use with my Fire TV

@@JeffPaine4890 yes and it works great with 👍 the new Firestick 4K max which is faster, better and easier than the regular firesticks! Definitely worth the investment to upgrade to the 4K max. I did and haven't regretted it to this day. I bought the 128gb USB too but decided on a smaller USB of 64 gb which is more than enough for the live TV apps I like including two Kodi's one the regular Kodi build along with another Kodi fork build which Troy point offers for an efficient system, if you like trying that along with other apps including some Amazon apps that can be moved to USB.
Would it be possible to move the app back to the FS, use it and return it to the usb? Xplorer would help with this.

I was actually referred to your video from an Amazon customer representative because i was having trouble moving my apps to USB lol So apparently they use your video also!!! lol Idk if this is just a problem over here in United States? But my tv didnt have "developer options" as an available option in my settings initially, so there was no way for me to bypass the security need to use x-plore like you were showing! After little research i found that Amazon removed developer options on the latest software update, at least for me here in the States. But they did not delete it from the operating software it is just hidden so i had to unlock it. The settings for me are little different they vary from region to region. So i dont have "My Fire Tv" tab, for me it was "Device & Software", then click on the tab "About", and then i had to click "Your Tv" tab like 6-7 times until it says "no need, your are already a developer". and then you just hit back button to return to the "device & Software" page and "Developer options" is back as a tab option. it doesn't use "install unknown apps" and then lists individual apps here, instead it has "apps from unknown sources" tab and you just need to turn that on and you can install apps from any source. once i did that the security restriction was lifted and x-plore worked perfectly like you showed!! Just wanted to mention this incase anybody else from different region ran into the same problem i did. Thanks again for posting....cheers!

This had been so helpful. It beat having to go to a command line and putting in all sorts of stringed commands....I was able to even beat what Chris Waite put....When in the file manager I was able to simply move all the files I wanted by selecting the move option. This was far vfaster and easier than copying to the clipboard. This option even took care of uninstalling the app. Another tedious step avoided!

This was great, exactly what I was looking for, thanks! The only thing missing was how to have "Developer Options" appear on the Firestick menu, as it doesn't appear by default. A quick Google search helped me find that though.

We Called The Company and They Were Not Even Close To Fixing The Issue Of Saving Space or Helping at All. This Was Just Incredible and Again It WORKED! Which apps could you move?
Good to know it's more than one way to move apps to external storage. I do it a little differently. On the left side, I highlight Internal storage, app manager then install. On right side highlight internal storage and to downloader. On left side highlight the app you want to move. holed it down then hit move, it will take you the steps to uninstall it, and it will appear on right side under downloader. click on it, and it will install, and you are done, go back home to application and you will see usb icon.

Thank you so much for this. My memory on my fire TV is full. I have a USB drive and new apps wouldn't install as it would say memory full, and wouldn't give the option to use USB drive. Since doing this, it now installs on the USB!

I have a toshiba fire tv. Have tried both usb 2.0 and 3.0 128gb fat32 format.
Keeps saving back to tv.

I moved apps from the TV to the flash drive using the method shown in this vid. Since doing this sometimes new apps automatically saves to flash drive, sometimes not. If not, I just make sure the TV has the enough memory, and then move to the flash drive using the method here

I lost 2 all’s with data and I followed your directions. Now I have reinstall and put data back in😂

Works well but when the app tries to update the FS can’t find it on the usb. You have to move it back to internal and update the do it all again. Somewhere I saw an app that works around this issue. Will have to look for it…

Thanks for this. Was annoying me that some apps were able to be moved and some didn't give the option. The fire TV doesn't come with much space and with each update seems like they add more and more apps that u can't delete

Video was great! Clear and precise! Everything worked great! But now my problem is that I can't launch the apps that I moved to usb???? Do you know why that is? Internal storage apps open fine . I would try a different external device.
@Chris Waite thank you. I just ordered a different usb drive an MD different otg cables. I realized after I checked Amazon that the usb drive that I bought was more for laptops and phones. And it wasn't fat23 formatted either.

Why X-Plorer don't show Extarnal Memory but only internal memory ? (not appear the external memory icon me too)
I did all this and it installed right back on internal storage.
Some apps will do this if they are not designed to be allowed to be installed on external storage.

Hi Chris, to skip a few steps, in right hand pane of xplore, highlight download folder then in left hand pane application manager - installed apps. Instead of copy to clipboard, just select move option & the new apk will be moved to download folder & option to uninstall the app will be automatically displayed.

Yes. The apps that you move will be updated to external storage.
Also, any future sideloaded apps will go straight to external storage.

Well done video, however every time I reinstall the app it installs on the internal storage and not the USB formated by the TV with 15gb available?
Unfortunately some apps are designed to be installed on the internal storage, the app developer has probably specified this in their code for the app. You could try moving it to usb.
I'm about to install a few apps to see if any of them allow the installs to be stored in external storage.
These features appear very well hidden from the user.
I believe one can move appropriate apps but it only moves the app itself and not the working files ? If one is attempting to gain storage, it seems a fire TV cube with twice the 16G space might be the easiest. Plus it has other features that may or may not be super cool.
Yes the cube is the simplest and easiest way to get more space, I got one a few months ago and I have never looked back!
Legend, they really need to make it easier to do this. Why give external usb option if their system doesnt let you move it over

Moving apps worked fine. But now the apps I moved will not update. I get a message of insufficient storage for update. If I move them back they they update. Seems that apps that you move using this method can not be updated on external memory. Is there a work-around?
Unfortunately some apps are simply not setup to be moved off the internal memory and therefore do not auto update, so far I have not found a workaround, I'm afriad!

Thanks for the vid - I came close to giving up because my cursor would not move after copying to clipboard, no amount of toggling helped - I had to press up really quickly after doing that for it to work 🤷♂️ then hallelujah! Does anyone have a list of apps that can be moved to USB? I assume most sideloaded apps can be, what about apps that can be loaded straight on like VLC player? Is there a list of these anywhere?
I am glad you got it working unfortunately I don’t know of a list of apps that can be moved to external storage, any apps could be blocked the developer of the app can chose weather on not to allow the app to be moved to external storage.

Every time an update is needed is better than running out of space. If anyone has any tips for fire tv and why it never gives the option to move the apps, I would be greatful.
I think you would be better off waiting till the Cube is on a special offer and get that instead at least you will have double the storage.

Hi I moved the apps over but when I tried to open them I got errors. Ended up moving them back to internal and they worked fine. Do you know why this happened?
It may be that some apps are designed to go on the internal memory and don't function properly on external or your usb device or lead may have had an issue.

Chris I don't have app management just internal shared storage, USB, and root under root it says your device seems to be not rooted what does that mean? How then can I try to move files from internal to the USB drive?
As you are running Fire OS 6 you need to follow this guide!
Great video but does this only work with usb sticks? What about normal external hdd's with multiple partitions where i set 1 with 128GB in FAT32 to be used as internal and the other partitions as external storage?
This will work on a hard drive too with 1 partition set to FAT32 for extra storage but unfortunately on Sticks running FireOS 7 I cannot seem to get it to format for internal and external storage.

I am afraid I don’t have a print out but you can use the pause and rewind buttons on TH-cam to help you follow the video.
After I select copy to clip board the x player freezes and I can't move up or down. I can only back out. I'm using a firestick 4k max. Any thoughts?
Perhaps try restarting your fire stick by holding down the middle button on the remote, whilst also holding down the play/pause button until it says on the screen, your device is restarting, let the device restart, and then try again.

hello i just bought a new fire stick tv 4k max and i think it s no more possible to had a externe device. i had try few usbkey in fat 32 and it can t reconize those keys.
it can t reconize a simple mouse too.

Try changing your otg cable it could be incompatible or faulty.

I tried attempting to move apps to USB thumb drive, and it doesn’t work on my Fire TV Stick 2nd generation, because it has 5GB of internal storage space. The 3rd generation has a USB external storage feature where you can move apps to USB thumb drive for external storage.
Not all apps can be moved to the USB.
Wher do you highlight the usb storage, I’ve followed your instructions and it just reinstalls in the internal memory, help I must be missing something?
Not all apps are designed to go to USB Storage, quite a few are hard programmed to go to the Internal storage I am afraid.
Do you know if it’s possible to connect a USB drive and use a wire internet connection on firestick max?
Yes there is a Ethernet and USB otg cable that should work or you could try daisy chaining an Ethernet and otg cable together.

I am afraid not unfortunately I don’t have any apps that would record directly to any storage.
Do you format the USB for external storage?
It must be formatted to fat32
It is formatted for FAT 33.
I used x-plore file manager on my fire stick 4k max to transfer 4 different apps with success to my 30gb usb memory stick. The next day I tried again to transfer another app. After selecting the installed app on the downloader and and copy to clip board. Selected Internal shared storage to paste into download, however there is no download folder there only downloader appears. Something has gone wrong as I am sure it was there when I did the first 4 apps. At a loss can you help please. Very frustrated. Regards. Randall.
Not working for me. The Only thing I did different, We should not matter, I installed an NVME SSD, formated it to fat32 and used firestick to format it to external storage so it can be seen in x-plore but when i copy it like you did and reinstall it, it installs right back on the firestick. My SSD shows up in x-plore just fine and it also shows up as usb storage under My Firestick. ??? What do you think?

@@cwtek1 I changed the process to use both sides of xplore & began moving apps rather than copying to the clipboard, pasting & deleting after installation. It's much cleaner and faster!!!! No muss, no fuss....work smarter, not harder folks!!!!! Js -Mark

If your TV has a USB A socket and you have FireOS 7 then yes you can plug the hard drive in. It should be 2TB or Less to work with the FireTV!

Cant get this to work with Retroarch apk, always installs to firestick internal memory. Other apks install to usb fine.
I can only assume the app developer has programmed the app to only be installed on internal memory.

When I move apps through Xplorer, the original size shrinks and not all app size can be moved to usb!
For example, when the original size of the app is 40 Mb on internal storage before moving, and when I have moved to external storage (usb), the size becomes 21 Mb on usb storage.

I have an old Gen 2 FireStick. In XPlore I dont have Shared Internal Folder, just Internal. I put the apk in there, uninstall the app then go in Xplore download folder, install the apk. Then check in settings, but it has been installed in the last place, back and there is no USB symbol. Tried a few times, no Joy. Help for me?
Some apps are hard coded to be installed on the internal memory and cannot be installed on the external memory.
"Developer options" is not under my fire tv on my stick. So what else can i do to allow unkown apps to be stored to my flash drive?
Goto settings then my fire tv then about then highlight the name of your fire tv device and press the middle button 7 times then press the back button and Developer Options should be there.

Unfortunately not they run two different systems and are incompatible, you need to search the Roku TV store to check if they have a Roku version of the app you are looking for.

Some apps are designed only to be run from the internal memory.

Also, does anyone know if I need to apply the FAT32 onto a brand new ScanDisk USB 3.0 or 3.1 Flash Drive 64GB, or 3.0, 256GB before I began moving, copying, etc. onto the USB Drives?
This was carried out on the 4k max, the stick will format to a specific format needed for the firestick when you set it up for internal memory storage

If I move Kodi to the external hard drive, will it work? I know the memory will be erased, but I can always reinstall the build for kodi, but my question is, will Kodi run the same after being moved?
If kodi will let you move it then yes it should work although it might run slightly slower.
i moved kodi to external storage but i find it still uses firestick memory . as my video library increases , my firestick storage space decreases significantly.

Not all apps will move, it really depends on if the programmer has allowed it in his or her programming.

If you cannot move it by following the instructions in this video then it’s not possible.

Chris do you know how to update the apps that have been transferred to the USB stick, I get an error message saying not enough space on the stick to update, although I have one a gig on the main stick and over 100 gigs on the USB drive.
You have to move them back to internal storage, then update them, then move them back to the USB drive.
Sounds good, except I never get the paste option

Some apps have the option some don't!

It worked but it won't let me open the app. It shows the logo of the app then it does nothing. I followed steps exactly as shown but the app wont open.
Unfortunately not all apps will allow you to move them to external storage.
For some reason when I follow the instructions and install the app it does not install on my USB drive (USB 3.0 drive). It re-installs the app on my fire stick. I tried this with the Tiktok app.
Some apps are designed to be installed on the internal memory only, there is not anything you can do about this.
