    I spent about an additional $1000 restoring it. Couldn't be happier for a measly $1300 boat! Me and the kid love our weekend camping trips in it.

    Love the series of videos. One thing you forgot to mention is if you trailer the boat you have to demast it after every outing, and restep the mast every time you go out. For that reason alone many keep the trailerables wet.
    I also think that when buying a small boat in the water many will not have them gone over by a professional so you need to have someone show you how to look for blisters or soft spots.
    I never trust that sails are new, I always assume all sails and running rigging needs to be replaced.
    And as you have said alot, small boats are not fast but sailing is the ultimate way to boat. It does not get any better than a fast broad reach in good winds.
    Great channel, keep up the posts

    Great overview, many of those items can be reduced in cost with the right shopping around, I work in industrial equipment sales and have access to discount on stainless hardware companies that sell specific marine fittings, cleats, pulleys etc.. and you would be amazed at the crazy margins these companies charge for basic stuff, pays to shop around and ask for discount.

    Bought a Precision 18 for $350 - it was advertised for $2500. A foot of water inside, tons of mold, trailer needed lights and tires. I was going to walk away until the owner asked what I would realistically pay and I told her I would think twice about talking it if she gave it to me. (True!) The upsides: it came with two sets of sails and cushions that were stored inside, a 2011 Yamaha four stroke motor, many extra's. Took me two days to get the trailer back to road worthiness for a 2 hour drive back home. Spent over $2200 and untold hours getting her to perfect condition (two years later, teak extra's and buffing she's purdy slick sight)

Now I would like my own boat for my family. Something small and trailerable, but big enough for sleeping and cooking for overnight trips. The C22 seems to fit the bill. Not sure where I would keep it, or if I could even get the boat backed up our steepish driveway. Toying around with the idea at any rate. I like your videos.

    In Dec.2023 I bought a 30` Hunter from a sailor in New Port Richey Fl. for 2k with 3 good sails, rigging and solar power with a running 2QM20 yanmar that needed a raw water pump rebuilt . He needed the boat out of the slip for a new boat so bargaining was easy. Me my Brother and sister in-law motored and sailed the boat from NPR to Port Saint Lucie Fl. across the Okeechobee Waterway 6 days with no issues. Couldn`t be happier.

    I got my C-22 about a month ago for $2,800 on ebay. I keep mine in the Great Salt Lake, and my slip fees are significantly less than yours, mine are $126 per month in the summer which includes water. Fortunately mine is in really good shape, only things I have added are wax about $25, registration $380, and a solar power controller for $17. But... I think new sheets and halyards may be in the future...

    Had a 1990 Catalina Capri 26, which was a solid, dependable, manageable boat, that was in great shape at 15 years old. Over the course of 8 years, we upgraded electronics and electrical, rigging & lines, and sails. When we had to sell her, we did well -- getting back 70% of what we paid for her originally, not counting the upgrades. When we looked at what we shelled out for those 8 great seasons on the water, it wasn't bad at all. When we were looking for a boat, there was a lot of push from brokers to get something bigger "so we wouldn't grow out of it quickly," but we knew what we wanted as a couple. Finding an solid older Catalina, especially the 22, 25 or 27 should be doable for most prospective sailors if they take their time and learn what needs elbow grease vs. what needs $$.

    Hello AIP - I bought my 1970 C-22 (hull #284) for $356.00 on E-bay through a charity auction - a real risk for sure. However, it turned out to be an awesome deal. Keel is in really good shape, rudder is good shape, keel winch and cable are in usable shape (new cable and new winch provided in sale), Rigging is in excellent shape (I bent one turnbuckle end learning how to raise the mast but there were two extra TB in the box of stuff), Sails are in OK shape (main needs replaced), hull is solid below the split line (no leaks or soft spots), leaked through the deck in spots (all fixed now). There are other problems above the split line but nothing that won't allow me to sail this year and fix her in the winter. Two areas of wood in the deck that are going bad need to be cut out and replaced. Bought a new mast step/Bolt $30, Fiberglass epoxy/cloth $20, Outboard 15hp Johnson $400, Polyurethane $16, Topping lift $20, Trailer winch and Strap $70, CG safety flares $30, new trailer tires $320, screws/nuts/bolts/hasp - $100. So I guess I have about $1400 in it right now. Deck repairs will be about another $100 in epoxy, glass, wood, sand paper and then paint... No electronics yet??

    • @AdventuresInParadise

    I bought my C22 for $500, but it was in way worse condition. I'm one of those idiots that likes a challenge. It's easier to list what is original on the boat since that since that is a much shorter list, everything else is new. Add to that a blister repair job, full restoration of the keel, painting the entire boat, etc. New sails, new outboard, new rigging, new hardware, etc... I spent about $7K on parts and supplies, that doesn't include my labor.

    • @tahoetimm9662

      Hey Luke. Did you do any deck work? I have a soft spot on my 1974 C22 and wondering if I should tackle from the top or under and thru the liner. I'm leaning towards top. Thx

    • @SteelDoesMyWill
      @SteelDoesMyWill 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tahoetimm9662 I only had one rotten spot around the electrical thru deck fitting for the mast wiring, it was about 4 x 4 inches. Repairing deck rot is always easier from the top on a Catalina (any model). The catch 22 is that you're going to tear up the non-skid pattern on the gelcoat which really can't be duplicated in a repair. If you fix extensive deck rot just plan on re-doing all the nonskid with Kiwi Grip, you only need one gallon to do the entire boat and its a really great deck surface. It also has the added bonus of hiding imperfection if your new fiberglass top surface isn't automotive grade bodywork level.

    I owned 9757 and brought her back. It was in much better starting condition that yours was, and admittedly I also went through Catalina direct for a lot of my repairs. Looking back I realize that I paid CD a hefty commission for what they supply you with. Gerhauer is the cheapest option for replacement running rigging but is quality. For the same price you can find higher quality brands like lewmar and harken. Better halyards can be bought for much less. For me it was a joy to refit my boat and that’s how it should be looked at, like you said a hobby.

    We bought our 1974 C22 at my daughters school fundraiser (it was donated) for $450. Not only was she complete, but had 3 sets of sails. A lot of elbow grease to get her pretty and a few simple repairs, mostly tightening things and some rewiring, all done by us. I always thought I would want a big boat, but 22 is a good size for single hand sailing and for trailering. Thans for the great videos!

    I just got my 1982 Catalina 22, sail number 11353, about 3 weeks ago... I actually traded a $800 guitar and a $200 amplifier for it that I was no longer using ( I have many many more) . Complete with 2 older main sails in fair condition, one rather nice jib, and no motor. I'm sure it will need all new running rigging, and possibly new standing rigging also. I will make brand new seat cushions with new foam with my industrial sewing machines. I don't have to do everything at once, one step at a time while enjoying sailing ... I will certainly do the most important items first, keel cable and pin, etc. including some trailer work too. I do expect to have at least $4,500 all in all. 😎⛵

We kept the boat 1/2 year on a mooring, which was about $1500 plus a state-required inspection and lease of about $500/year. The other 1/2 year in a slip, for about what you paid. Keep in mind that on a larger, heavier boat it's not bad going to the mast to raise the main... on the 22 it was too little space to walk and rocked too badly but it's pretty nice on the larger boat. Your new boat will likely already have the jib on a furler

    We’re about the same my Catalina 22 cost me $5500 but has 4 sets of sails, three of which are good, the one that isn’t will be a backyard sun shade. Outside of the purchase price I probably have a $1,000 into it. You are right the bigger the boat the more the costs add up. I’m lucky to be in Texas where slip fees are affordable. Not focusing on the cost, I will say that I love the way the Catalina sails. When the wind is right it always puts a smile on my face. It is comfortable enough without the big headaches of a larger boat. I prefer it to sailing a sunfish, which is fun to sail but really beats up your body. If I were to do it again I would have bought the 17’ trailerable $1,200 wooden snipe I passed on, restored it sailed it on my local lake and probably be out $3,000 total. So far this has been a great learning boat but I have had my troubles with it as well. The magic of a small boat is to not have to deal with systems, that is where the costs and the headaches start. My goal for this Catalina is to learn to sail it well, then find the kitchen slide out and use it as a dedicated camper.

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have the same goal except I wonder if the kitchen slide out is not needed. A gas stove is fine and then you save the much needed space inside. Plus, with small gas burner, you can cook in the cockpit too, or on a little island you're parked next to.

    • @gigioecu
      @gigioecu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adventures In Paradise I saw a slideout at my club, it needs restoration, but it has the drawers and water tank that make it a good option. But you are right a small gas stove is fine, I use it to sail on a local lake and don’t trailer it.

    • @MrBobVick
      @MrBobVick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Had the "official " slide out gally. Did not like the sink drain discharge location that would gain water when heeled - never did leak. But took that out and added a catch tank for the grey water. Used it one time to make the kids hot chocolate. Best thing about is it did help with the resale price of 5k. (New sails, outboard, copper bottom job, new keel pin/bearings & the list goes on.)

    In my country(NZ) the cost of parts and equipment would be 50% more. What you end up with is a yacht like yours, having spend $4250 is now Worth ? $3000-$4000

      Hey Brandon. Are you trailering and stepping the mast?

  • @stephanguitar9778
    @stephanguitar9778 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sounds about right. Ive got and had a few trailer sailers and if looking at a boat now I divide the price between sails and rigging, hull and interior, engine, and Trailer. Any one of these could be a complete deal breaker if the cost of replacement repair is nearly as much as the boat is worth. I have had more trouble with trailers than the rest combined, but that's because I don't have a workshop and serious tools for fixing these things.

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. On our four year old power boat, the trailer had issues from the sale water... it doesn't matter than I rinse it with salt away when we're done boating, it sits there in the parking lot all day after being submerged ... I just spent like $800 fixing it up with a new axle, brakes, all new nuts and bolts/rims...all this boating stuff can get expensive. It's annually that I have to replace the jack/wheel and the winch strap.
