  • In this video, I will go over some techniques and tools that can be used to build a flexible leg rig. I wanted to cover some initial concepts with this simplified 3D model before showing how to rig a flat style character's leg.
I'll cover the basics of creating joints, IK Handles, Pole vector constraints. And, show how we can create additional controls to reshape the leg, how to use Set Driven keys to automate controls, and how to create additional attributes for scaling the legs.
    0:30 Joint chains
    1:21 IK Handle
    3:29 Animation Controls
    5:41 Bind Skin
    6:23 Set Driven Key
    7:18 Pole Vector Constraint
    8:10 Adding Attributes
    9:15 Connection Editor
In the next video, I’ll use some of these methods to rig a flat style character's leg rig
Animation is life, I live for animation. #Animation

wow this is possibly the best rigging video i've ever scene, very methodical with lots of controls. it's really helpful as a student, but I wish you did a video for a whole 3d body.

This makes leg rigging so much easier! Thanks a million for this.

Can you post a full view of the 3D character model? Thanks

I only modeled the 3D legs for this character so I could go over these rigging concepts.
I'll be rigging the flat 2D version of this character in future videos, but maybe I can go further with the 3D version as well. :)

Is this style industry standard ? doesn't look like it to me

The rigging concepts I demonstrate are based on core principles such as hierarchies, simple constraints, driven keys, and connections. These concepts can be adapted to other methods in Maya or even different software. There are many ways to rig characters and props, and each studio or production will have preferred methods that suit their pipeline. The final goal is the animated performance, so I rig like an Animator.
Whatever works best for you, cheers!
