Amazing job, thanks a lot James! I m considering to develop some kind of 2.5d character, like an inbetween peanuts movie and 2d animations and all ur tutorials gonna be a life saver!
Hi james. Can you recommend a book that explains 2d animation in maya and not 3d. Everywhere I look I only find 3d tutorials. Also are you planning to do more tutorials? Love your content
I don't think you'll find anything published on 2D techniques in Maya. Since it's 3D software, most demos and books out there are on 3D methods of rigging and animation. You can find videos and books on flat puppets in other software like After Effects, and ToonBoom. But we can always use techniques from other software as inspiration, and figure out how to do something similar in Maya. I will certainly do more videos on 2D techniques in Maya, they just take a while to put together because I try to make them as clear and concise as possible. Thanks for your feedback.
@@jcrossley17 Thanks for your reply James. From what research I did, if you can model 3d animation in blender; there is an addon that converts your animation to a 2d line style. So I'm trying that atm as there's more documentation on blender rather than maya. I am not referring to grease pencil of course. So just letting you know if you're curious. Also keep up the great work my dude!
You can use BlendShapes as long as the topology (number of faces) of the geometry is the same for each mouth shape. The mouth shapes I used in this video were built with different geometry, so BlendShapes wouldn't work between them.
Can you apply the 2D planes and make them wrap around a 3D object? Example being a 3D model with a 2D face that isn't driven by textures, but rather meshes and controls
Yes, you can use deformers for this. Wrap deformers are brilliant, but you may be able to use Lattice or even Blendshape deformers. It depends on the design and the control you are looking for.
@@jcrossley17 I did this with the Wrap deformer and it looks great but a major problem is that the joints get left behind and the manipulators stay with them so I can't control the rig.
This video series is amazing! The quality of info, delivery and editing is top notch. Thank-you so much! Please keep it up :)
So cool! Love learning new and interesting way to rig and animate in Maya! Thanks a million for these! Keep them up!!!
Love this!
Learning so much from this series. Thank you

Use blendshapes instead of swapping
