In this video I'm taking a quick look at the Miyoo Mini + handheld retro emulation console that I picked up last week, and why it's worth considering upgrading the stock OS to the OnionOS custom firmware.
There's lots of other Miyoo Mini + videos out there already but I wasn't able to make a full video this week otherwise, so I hope it fills in nicely!
I'll post a link to a website and videos below that I've found very helpful in setting up my own console, if my video piques your interest this will let you know more!

Just got one myself recently and I love it, absoloute godsend for slow days at work
I've had other handheld emulators in the past but this one has really nailed the formula I think. First time i've actually completed a retro game in forever

Thank you very much for showing off the shmups/shooter mode of mame. Big fan of these games and nobody else was showing them off in their reviews of the miyoo
I was really surprised too. I'd spotted it in the other reviews but everyone was glossing over it so I figured it wasn't anything much. But it's awesome!
I ordered one and it'll be here this Friday, pretty excited to see it for myself and frig around with it

I’m really excited for mine to show up. I bought the atomic purple version. It’s finally made it’s way through customs in the US so I’m hoping it will get here soon.

I love mine. Got it off Amazon for $90, came with a case and pre-loaded with Onion and tons of games. I also have an Anbernic RG350M. The metal case makes it feel like a legit piece of gear. All it needs is a camera and a phone built in, and it'd be all I need.

Thanks for showcasing the "shoot" emulator that is included on the stock firmware. Not only am I a SHMUP enthusiast, I purchased a Miyoo Mini+ on the cheap and it did not include any ROMs and therefore, did not include the "shoot" category. Well, I was able to locate the stock firmware, was able to add it to my Onion OS build and it functions as you describe. It is far from perfect, but it is a nice feature that I would have otherwise never known existed for this handheld beauty.
Yeah it's definitely flawed but it's a fun way to indulge in shmups with the screen in a vertical orientation!
How did you moved the “shoot” emulator from the original card to the onion is? Sorry I’m new to miyoo.
Please do share how to get this "shoot" platform added. Would really appreciate it.

I just got mine a few days ago and I love it! Besides my switch oled the miyoo mini plus is the other best gaming purchase that I have ever bought! ( the third best will be the switch 2 whenever it comes out lol.)

Great video. Shoot mode is really cool! I'll check out this device. I currently have a GameForce Chi which is 640x480 with twin analog sticks, WiFi and proper pico8.
My Anbernic is fine for the analog sticks but this is so good for all the games up to PS I don't even mind
Gameforce Chi is great. Still worth it purely for how unique it is.
@@adinwalls the only thing that makes me want to switch is this Onion/Garlic OS! But I'd miss the Chi if I swapped hardware.

@@tomaswolsink7620 how do you mean? It should be displayed on the whole screen unless it adjusts to the correct aspect ratio, which is always better than stretching

Just got mine! Absolutely love it, but having a bit of a nightmare installing the latest OS & getting roms to work. Not sure what I’m doing wrong!

great review! i copied the shoot folder from the original SD card to the new one with onions os but i can't see it... which emulator do i have to enable from the package app?
There's another shoot folder inside the emu folder, you need to copy that one across too. I hope that works for you.

Is that “shoot” thing something that OnionOs does? Or Retroarch?
Must be a retroarch thing. Seems like a mame folder with specific settings set up to run games in that orientation. It was part of the standard setup on the stock firmware with my unit but I copied it across to my new SD card after setting up onion and it worked fine, just didn't integrate particularly well with the game swap feature

Please how do you get the thumbnails working.. i have my mini plus just like yours all set up but i dont have thumbnails for any games i tried putting them in all these different locations in diff Img folders etc.. where??
You need an img folder inside the ROM folder for each console. If the image files have the same name as the ROM it should show up
@@JoeBleeps i tried that aswell as a bunch of different variations.. idk what im doing wrong.. ever since i switched over to onion i havent gotten them to show
@@priscillaquinn9505 that is very strange. Is the folder labelled as IMG and is it placed inside the roms folder? Are the files in PNG format?

Any chance you can post instructions for how to copy the 'shoot' app over, and even better if you could post a zip. I no longer have the original miyoo files.
I'll have to look into how to post a zip and I'll check all the files but there was a folder marked "SHOOT" in the roms folder and I think the emu folder too?

Does anyone know if you can plug a power bank to this while playing so you can continue using it past 6-7 hours? I may actually come upon a scenario like that when I go camping later this year.
I've plugged mine in while playing and it seems fine but does get a bit hot. If you try to turn it on while charging it won't work but if you plug it in while playing it will power it

Hi again. I have the "Shoot" folder from the original card but when I place it inside the ROMS folder it doesn't show up in ONION OS. What do you thing I do wrong?
There is also another "Shoot" folder that you need to put in the "emu" folder

I have one and love it. It has one major drawback. If you like Pokemon gen 2 or 3, it doesn't properly support RTC so for that I use my RG35xx

@@sandomen123 Pokemon works but time won't be accurate so time based events and other things will be hit or miss.

@@dr_ubo the stock console comes with shoot preinstalled!
@@dr_ubo I highly recommend you back up the original SD card it comes with before you do anything. Otherwise you'll lose factory settings and potentially delete things like I did and you can't get them back easily.

so do i just drag and drop the shoot folder to Roms/ARCADE?
No just copy it to roms, but also make sure you do the same thing with the shoot folder in the emu folder too

For me with organizing I delete roms I do not need at all
And on the main menu…press the refresh roms button and it will get rid of all the junk like Barbie or Jack Nicolas Golf…you know? 😂
And there is room to add newer games…just make sure to hit refresh and newer games will be added
But? Yeah I have the older Miyoo Mini and this Miyoo plus really nails everything
Well? There are times where I revisit the older Miyoo mini 😂….it’s just older and I like older firmware stuff for some reason
I missed out on the original Mini but the plus is so small, the Mini must be tiny!

Actually they do sell custom grips for them and it attaches to the handheld…it’s molded like a controller, but super comfortable if you have larger hands

Wait how do I get Shoot on OnionOS???
If you still have the card that came with your console, or if you backed it up, you need to transfer over the "shoot" folder from both the "roms" and "emu" folders into the same folders on your SD card with Onion installed on it. Should work fine!
