    It's refreshing to see a fellow old person sharing their experience. My DOS games were Prince of Persia, Extreme Pinball, Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, Lemmings, and a whole bunch of other games I forgot about. Can't wait to play them again thanks to you!

    Hey Dude! Here is a "dad from germany". I really apreciate this video.
    I 100% agree to what you've said: that this stuff blows the mind. Same goes for me. I'm playing currently on my Odin Pro. I LOVE to play these old DOS games, which made my childhood back then (I'm 43 now), as well. If anyone would have told my younger me, that I'm going to play all these fine games on a mobile device, I wouldnt believe him. Thats absolutely amazing - as you said. I'm grateful for all these fine tech today which makes it possible.
    I finished a complete playtrough of Dune 2 (Westwood) and Monkey Island 2 (LucasArts) a few weeks ago. I'm currently playing Heroes of Might and Magic 1 on the Odin and getting desperate on the final level of the first campaign. These are fine days we live in!

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh man Dune 2 was such a good game! I should have shown that one in this vid.
      And I'm so with ya. It's a fantastic time we're living in. In many ways It's even better than the future I could have imagined. Yeah, we don't have flying cars or anything, but every old PC game I could ever want in my pocket!? That's even better than flying cars!

    I love old PC games. I grew up with a Commodore 64, then got an Amiga 500 many years later. Eventually I got a PC, and we didn't have internet. We had what they called BBS. I would get on there and ask if anyone wanted to play multiplayer Doom, Quake, or Duke Nukem 3D. I'd call them or they'd call me, and I'd be up to like 4 or 5 in the morning battling it out with others. So much fun, especially with mods for those games. I'll never forget the experience I had when I played Descent for the first time too. It felt like I was on a rollercoaster the way you had the freedom to twist and turn and go wherever you wanted.
    I guess my top 10 PC games would be: Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Rise of the Triad, Command and Conquer: Red Alert, Wolfenstein 3D, Descent, Diablo, and Half-Life. What would yours be?

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was subscribed to a BBS too! It was a Toronto based BBS called Magic BBS. I mainly used it to look at pictures of The Simpsons to print at my buddy's place because he had a laser printer. I just needed lots of printouts of Simpsons characters for some reason?
      I like your list. Very many overlaps with mine ;)

    I'm so happy at least one retro handheld TH-camr is excited about Dos emulation on portable! I think best dos games to play on these machines are old Apogee platformers, or other action games like Abuse or Crusader. Nothing beats a PC running DOS when playing strategy or RPG games.

    Brilliant video!! And very detailed!!
    I used to play sometimes on my parents Windows 95 computer. I vaguely remember DOS. I do remember I was banned from the machine that ran DOS as I once typed random keys and caused havoc. I wish my parents had more patience and taught me stuff. Ironically, knowing about DOS can help you get to navigate a non GUI interface. Linux Terminal would have been an easy transition coming from DOS.

    I love going back and looking at some of your previous content, because it just brings back such good memories. One thing for sure that I believe is the case for many of us gaming geeks and dweebs is that we spent A LOT of cash on those retro games. I remember playing Terminal Velocity and deciding that playing it with a mouse just wasn't enough. I ended up buying one of those Microsoft 360 flight controllers that made games like Terminal Velocity and Descent so much fun, well worth it. My friends who weren't into tech or gaming thought I was nuts, but I didn't care, I was having a great time.
    Another game that I loved playing that was a DOS game was called Crusader No Remorse. It had a very interesting point of view, and was really fun to play. I am going to have to see if I can still locate it to play again.

    This video made me want to experiment with my favorite DOS strategy/RPG games from the 90s. I don't think I can play the action games or timing sensitive games (RTS games) but turn-based games or wargames or RPGs are perfect possibilities. Here are some games I wonder if I could get running:
    *Castles 2 Siege and Conquest
    *Heroes of Might and Magic 1 and 2 (I see this works in the video)
    *Jagged Alliance
    *Master of Magic
    *Master of Orion 1+2
    *Civilization
    *Colonization
    *Panzer General 1
    *Scorched Earth (fun multiplayer hot seat gaming)
    *Fantasy General
    *Worms
    *Centurion Defender of Rome
    *X-COM
    *L'Empereur, Liberty or Death, Romance of the 3 Kingdoms, etc (KOEI made some complicated strategy games I never understood as a kid but liked to experiment with them)
    *Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space
    *Fallout 1
    Would the Miyoo Mini be powerful enough? The screen seems to have good enough resolution but small text may be an issue I guess.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HOMM, no problem
      Turn based strategy games, no problem.
      Anything with very fine mouse controls or fast paced accurate clicking will probably give you problems.
      I'm not familiar with all the games on your list (although many are near and dear to my heart), but the Mini is powerful enough to play a lot. And the screen is VERY crisp. If your eyesight is good enough, you'll be fine. I was playing HOMM and could read all the small stuff no prob.

    I probably played a ton of dos games, most of which came from a demo disc with my PC. But the first dos game I purchased was dark forces for my win95 pc. I saw star wars and was sold. Not neccesarily an unknown game but still cool. Duke, and eapecially quake became staples. Quake in partitcular because of Mplayer. I found Mplayer to be better than just using the QW server browser because it had more social features.
    My expectations with the miyoo was to enjoy my snes collection, its tiny and comfortable for my hands. I do wish it had saturn emulation, I'd love to play sakura wars on it, but I cant complain, I knew what I was getting and glad I did. 😊

    I remember when my mom worked two jobs and still couldn't afford a computer to play these, so we'd go head to the Virgin Mega Store in San Francisco and I'd play on the demo computers there, or secretly install them at our local library. For these reasons, I'm amazed and excited to as fuck to play all these! I'm currently downloading some roms for Sega CD, but I'm working my way through each system. My favorite thing so far was playing Nemo: Adventures In Slumberland and Dreammaster, which I haven't played since 1990. Now all of this stuff fits in my pocket along with this crazy smart phone. If you want isometric shooter with killer ol' pumping techno track and guys walking in flames screaming and glass shattering it's for you. Oh and of course the good old cheesy fmv's 🙂

    Hey TD! Just curious if you still keep any old hardware for DOS/Windows games? I don't go crazy myself, just a socket 7, slot 1, and socket 478 system that I pull out from time to time.
    And thanks for the how to on the Mini!

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. I don't have any of my old PC stuff. Which really bums me out, I wish I kept everything. I definitely want to get my hands on an old machine to tinker with.

    Im really new to the whole retro scene, ive had my eye on the Miyoo Mini Plus a while and eventually pulled the plug the other day. Im assuming that considering this and the Mini are essentially one of the same, would all this still apply? Would love to play Quake and (I believe this was a DOS game) Outlaw, which was like the first western/cowboy game i ever played, man the nostalgia would hit so hard if i could. Im already excited to play Alex Kidd and Action Fighter on the Mastersystem. Great video TechDweeb!

    @TechDweeb which homm2, diablo and warcraft installs did you use? I have tried both gog and abandonware downloads but they do not seem to work on my rg280v (which kinda uses the same RetroArch and DosBox). Or am I mistaken and there are some pitfalls for that device? Did you manage to get them running there just like on your miyoo mini? Maybe another video with a more detailed guide for dos+rg280v? Thanks in advance.
    P.S. This guide is awesome.

    Now this looks awesome! Do you know if this will work on the Anberic RG35XX? I know Garlic OS is based on Onion OS. I don't have my unit in yet to try.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  ปีที่แล้ว

      To some extent. I haven't had the same luck with DOS on GarlicOS, I had a few issues, but I haven't tried it since the latest updates so they might be fixed. In theory it should work basically the same though.

    Another interesting video would be what pc ports hold up best for mobile gaming (or games from any platform for that matter). As much as I love quake and decent, they're not not really suited to the controller and form factor. Where as something like HOMAM is perfect for quick pick up and play sessions on the go.

    People, please help me.
    When I'm in this Dosbox pure start menu at 10:13, my cursor always moves by 2 files at a time, not one by one. So, in some cases I just manually can't select desired .exe file.
    What should I do?

    I have this game, it's called ''Bug!'' Was released on Sega Saturn, but I played it on my Windows 95 computer. I want to install the PC rom from this game on my Miyoo Mini Plus, so far no success. Some tips? I don't really know if I am doing it right. I installed Keen 4 the other day, put it in the DOS folder.
    PS Love the content Dweeb :)
